Girls are crazy, patriarchy blamed

This series of "school poisonings" would appear to be a cogent and ironic argument in favor of the Taliban's position:
The World Health Organisation (WHO) working with the Afghan government has investigated attacks for more than three years but found "no conclusive evidence of deliberate poisoning".

Thousands of girls have been taken ill at schools in that time, in incidents of mass fainting and vomiting. Pressure has mounted on Hamid Karzai's government to stop the apparent attacks as their frequency has increased in recent months. Pictures of girls being carried to ambulances, or hooked up to drips in provincial hospitals, have become an increasingly common sight. The symptoms are always short-lived.

The incidents have been widely interpreted as a campaign by the Taliban or other insurgent hardliners to crackdown on girls' education.
In other words, the Taliban had nothing to do with what is simply an example of mass female hysteria. I'm sure this incident has gone a long way towards hardening the position of the hardliners. They're already highly skeptical of democracy and female education, can you imagine what this does to their opinion of female suffrage?

"Let's see, they're blaming us for stuff we said we didn't do even though we quite happily take credit for beheading people and blowing them up, and these girls are all quite literally crazy, so yeah, let's definitely give them a voice in government!"

The amazing thing about feminism is that it regularly makes 7th century cretins look sane by comparison.

Prolly just some bad dog.

If they only had access to easy birth control, this never would have happened! Rubbing leaves of the native Afghan plants on their veiled hoo-hoos is simply not good enough!

Mass hysteria in the Middle East causing an unwarranted belief? Nah, that can't happen.

Anonymous Gladys P July 07, 2012 7:48 AM

Being able to direct and control that hysteria and mass belief to reproductive ends is on of the master strokes of certain religions. The Amish, Islam, Orthodox Judaism have women living in special clothing and squirting out babies like punkin seeds. The Orthodox Jews are maybe the best at it, routinely having 8 kids or so, having their women work to support the family, and the guys getting to spent their daytime "studying" in kollels, which function like daytime boys clubs for married guys. And yet the Jewish girls love it.

Brainwashing, I tell ya, but it works!

Anonymous cherub's revenge July 07, 2012 8:51 AM

routinely having 8 kids or so

You wanna keep 'em, keep 'em pregnant.

My observations on other couples is if you have one kid and she says she's not sure if she wants to have any more, you might as well start hiding assets and hunting for a good lawyer. Because she's as good as gone.

Two kids and she's done, you're on thin ice.

More than three and you can start shopping for side by side funeral plots.

It should also be pointed out that if anyone is actually poisoning the girls... its far more likely to be some liberal feminist organization looking to prove how evil the taliban are than it is to be the taliban itself.

Anonymous Stephen J. July 07, 2012 9:30 AM

Hmm. On the one hand, I can easily see Afghani schools where they're being forced to teach girls as such horrible places the girls would do anything to get out of them.

On the other hand, that means taking the competence of the WHO and the honesty of the Taliban as read, which I am reluctant to do for some reason.

Anonymous Chris July 07, 2012 9:56 AM

This reminds me of all those stories about how some Middle Eastern girl wants to prove she's can drive a car, and does so by driving it into a tree or a crowded marketplace, invariably killing herself and others in the process.

Blogger Vox July 07, 2012 10:14 AM

You're ignoring the central point, which is: if the Taliban are quite willing to admit they have done far worse things than not kill a few thousand girls, why would they deny this? Remember, when they actually kill women, they occasionally video it and then release the video around the world.

Anonymous Feh July 07, 2012 10:51 AM

Now, now, when the Taliban fire their guns in the air and scream "Allah Akbar!", and when they behead their prisoners for an internet video, that is also attention-seeking behavior just like the girls pretending to be poisoned.

Anonymous Grinder July 07, 2012 10:57 AM

The Taliban have greater credibility than the US govt or the Karzai regime.

Kinda like the date rape drug.

"campaign by the Taliban or other insurgent hardliners to crackdown on girls' education."

Their problem was co-education, and that most of the teachers were women, it's not like boys had near 100% literacy either.

"If they only had access to easy birth control, this never would have happened!"

Free vibrators you mean? Or was that a euphemism?

Girl's education?... oh, they really mean girl's indoctrination.

Yes, girls everywhere must learn the "liberation" of the cubicle. They must learn to be good hard working little corporate serfs... oh,and not to have horrid little babies. We wouldn't want to overcrowd the playground of the rich and famous.

Family baaaaaad... government authority gooooood.

Anonymous scoobius dubious July 07, 2012 11:48 AM

Anything that teaches Muslim women to not have children can only be a good thing.

Think of it, though. Afghan girls' schools... teaching them WHAT, exactly?

Nobody in Afghanistan learns or knows a damn thing. If they did, it wouldn't be Afghanistan, now would it.

Anonymous yukonyon July 07, 2012 11:50 AM

I'm sorry to disagree with you, but its always the man's fault a woman files for divorce. You see, men have these secret little universal remotes which fast forward their lives, and the more they use them, the more their wives and families feel emotionally cut off from them. Which explains men's addiction to remote controls, you see.

Blogger ray July 07, 2012 12:17 PM

v probably correct that this was hysteria, but also a collective technique (whether conscious or unconscious) to "draw attention to female vulnerability" which is the exact technique women in the west used to conquer "our" nations

"woman in distress" is the international code and signal for "everybody better come fix this" (i.e., crush the Evil Males and empower the Pore Oppressed Females)

we've seen the result of the triumph of feminism in amerika and the west -- a disaster that cannot be sustained much longer, w/o even more police-state measures

the "taliban" arent stupid . . . you haveta be realistic and practical to survive culturally and personally in desert environs, and they know the Matriarchal West is going to shove feminism down the rest of the planet's throat, one way or another

Anonymous Stephen J. July 07, 2012 2:46 PM

"You're ignoring the central point, which is: if the Taliban are quite willing to admit they have done far worse things than not kill a few thousand girls, why would they deny this?"

What makes "worse" can vary by context. Perhaps there's some nicety of honour involved where using force openly is permissible, but using poison covertly is not. Perhaps some of the incidents were real and others were hysterical copycat reactions. It's also worth noting that "no conclusive evidence" does not equal "no evidence whatsoever", and "few teachers taken ill" does not equal "no teachers taken ill".

That said, a closer rereading of the original article makes me more suspicious of the Karzai government. Barring some convoluted financial support contingent on not getting caught at this, the Taliban would have little motive to settle for non-lethal poisonings, as you say. Afghan security forces, on the other hand, by setting hysteria in motion with a few carefully timed real incidents, achieve a three-fer: 1) they get girls out of school without looking like they're doing it; 2) they weaken public support for their competitors; and 3) they have an excuse to grab known Taliban members and beat information out of them.

Mass hysteria is not uncommon in high-stress violent zones. But even mass hysteria usually has to be touched off by something. After all, it's not paranoia if they really are out to get you.

Exactly right! We burn them, bury them alive, throw acid in their faces, gang rape them, and stone them to death, but poisoning them is totally impermissible! We are not barbarians, after all.

"the "taliban" arent stupid"

Of course they're stupid. If they weren't stupid, they wouldn't still be in the Taliban.

FFS, if they weren't stupid, they wouldn't still be living in godforsaken Afghanistan, much less fighting over it.

Anonymous scoobius dubious July 07, 2012 3:17 PM

Afghanistan is a worthless piece of godforsaken ridiculous mountainous desert horseshit. The Afghans have been living there forever, and they have had literally all of Afghan history to try and turn it into someplace worth living in, or at least worth stopping long enough in to take a shit and wipe your ass. They haven't even managed that.

Now think of Utah: also a worthless piece of godforsaken ridiculous mountainous desert, comparable in every landlocked way to the desert uselessness of Afghanistan. But white folks got to work on it, and in the space of about a hundred-fifty years it's now got prosperous modern major cities and cool film festivals and lots of skiing, and so now even worthless diabetic mestizos want to move there and spread their greasiness and filth.

Compare and contrast.

(Two caveats: 1 -- yeah yeah I know, a bunch of the Afghan tribes are caucasians, but that's not the same thing as being "white folks". Arabs are caucasoids too, but they definitely aren't white folks. 2 -- Again, yeah yeah I know, once upon a time, Afghanistan was indeed a prosperous kingdom-- first a pagan one, invaded by Alexander the Great himself, and later a very cool Buddhist one, wiped out of course by the evil Muslims, with the predictable Muslim results we have seen ever since. But still: that was many centuries ago, and still, after all that time, they got nothing. White folks built Utah into a hot spot in no time at all, relatively speaking. Rinse and repeat. It's why I have no sympathy for these Starbucks-style "Donate money for clean water for Africa!" routines: Africans have been living in Africa for all of African history, they've literally had all the time in the world to make clean water a priority and learn how to do it. You mean to tell me they DIDN'T?!? If they never cared before, then why the f#ck should I care now?)

Anonymous Corollary to Scoobius July 07, 2012 3:40 PM

Afghans are the reason Afghanistan sucks.

Africans are the reason Africa sucks.

check the ages of the females in those reels -- adolescent girls and early teens led the mass (and profitable!) psychosexual hysterics (and always have, try a little d.h. lawrence or the salem bitch trials genesis)

. . . doesnt do much for modern matriarchal dogma about what naive pristine snoflakes they are

handing females the reins of the planet will prove a painful cowardice for amerika and her enablers -- many are still sheltered from the effects by wealth, etc, but that will change

You notice they never lose it like that for an engineer, businessman, or actual productive male who upholds modern civilization. It's that cooter-vision again. This is why you do not put them in charge.

Quiet, you! Mormon pioneers of largely English and Scandinavian descent that escaped from Nauvoo, Illnois in mass exodus in 1846* are just as productive as Amerindians from Mexico that used to flay people alive! You're blowing the multicultural cover. We're all exactly the same. Men and women are exactly the same too. Shhhhhhhhh.

* About 95% of them left for the Salt Lake Basin shortly after Joseph Smith was assassinated at the Carthage Jail. About 5% stayed behind and founded the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, also called the Community of Christ now, which also does not feature human sacrifice.

You been to an immigration law office lately? Lines around the block of white people, dreaming of a new life and endless chain-migration to glorious Pakistan.

Then I woke up and looked out my window, and a bunch of Pakistanis were raping children again.

"Call me when the Mormons build something as amazing as Samarkand."

Well they already did, and in a vastly shorter time, but you better believe I'm not gonna call you for any reason.

I looked up Samarkand in Google Images. It appears there's a dozen or so quite beautiful ancient buildings and complexes and tombs and such in the city center, done in a melange of Islamic-Indian-Persian-Central Asian styles. But that was about it. From what I could gather (and it was hard, because they really wanna emphasize those dozen buildings, like it's all they got) the rest of it looked like your typical dusty fly-specked Third World sprawl.

The "amazing" parts of Samarkand all appear to have been built hundreds of years ago, or maybe millenia ago; I couldn't detect any recent effort that made a notable impression. In contrast, the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City, and the major public buildings of SLC, are every bit as impressive as Samarkand's greatest hits, allowing for differences in architectural style and taste. And they all got built, historically speaking, the equivalent of last week.

"Herat is a much nicer-looking city than Salt Lake City or Provo."

Herat (on Google Images) impressed me more than Samarkand, although the latter's greatest hits seem more daunting. But Herat has both beautiful old-style buildings, and some very nice recent-slash-modern stuff. It looked like a better-functioning city in an all-around sense, too, with nice CBD public spaces and fountains and navigable streets and such.

So I got an idea: how about the South Asians all stay home and enjoy the amazing beauty of local Samarkand and Herat, and Stop Fucking Coming Here.

"its far more likely to be some liberal feminist organization looking to prove how evil the taliban are than it is to be the taliban itself."

Now THAT is pure crap. Feminists go to extremes not to offend male 'Talibans'. Liberals, ditto. Any and every organization allowed there, ditto.

Also, one should remember that the Talibans are incompetent lovers of donkies: messing up a perfectly straightforward poisoning would be par for the course. Acid, they can do: 1) get stuff from father-who-is-also-brother-and-also-uncle; 2) walk around looking for female (without dropping stuff); 3) chuck stuff into face of female...
Adding in more steps, especially complicated ones like secrecy, buttons (torch), mixing-ratios... that sort of thing burns out their little minds.

While I also hold that (baring the inevitable exceptions that prove the rule) women tend strongly to be less rational than men, the issue HERE is whether a literate (get it?) Taliban will be more or less mindless than an illiterate woman.

Your fear of women, particularly women in groups, is frankly hilarious. I'm sure your nightmares are full of vagina dentata. Unfortunately for you, there are compassionate people in the world who look at a group of poisoned young women and try to get to the bottom of what's poisoning them. And those people are shaping the world we live in, while you blog and publish your ebooks and enjoy a circle-jerk with your bros. Thanks for keeping it real, and have fun when ED kicks in.
