Absolving Obama

Maureen Dowd is far from the only one to somehow attempt to blame both Bush and Romney for the recent unrest in the Arab world, while refraining from placing any blame on the current occupant of the Oval Office:
You can draw a direct line from the hyperpower manifesto of the Project for the New American Century, which the neocons, abetted by Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, used to prod an insecure and uninformed president into invading Iraq — a wildly misguided attempt to intimidate Arabs through the shock of overwhelming force. How’s that going for us?

After 9/11, the neocons captured one Republican president who was naïve about the world. Now, amid contagious Arab rage sparked on the 11th anniversary of 9/11, they have captured another would-be Republican president and vice president, both jejeune about the world.
The neocons aren't slithering back. Obama has been going along with their strategic insanity to nearly the same extent as Bush. But that's not enough for them - one wonders what would be enough - and ominously, Mitt Romney is showing every sign that he will make Bush's foreign policy look like the humble one it was once promised to be by comparison.

But the media must be truly fearful about the electoral backlash facing Obama as a result of the recent incidents in Libya and elsewhere across the Arab world, considering their desperate attempts to change the subject to Bush, or Romney, or anything but the man who is nominally in responsible for addressing them. And they must be terrified about what he's going to say next after producing that "I don't think that we would consider them an ally" gem about Egypt.

"Now, amid contagious Arab rage sparked on the 11th anniversary of 9/11"

I'm not sure I understand what the Arabs have to be so enraged about. By any rational metric, they're winning, big time. Sure, Iraq got a bit 'sploded, and the West Bank is a trifle dreary, but look what they're getting in exchange: all of Europe, and an ever-widening chunk of America. Seems like pretty good bazaar haggling to me. And a colonialist's (which is all they've ever been) wet dream.

"...the neocons, abetted by Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld..."

Ah, how coy. I love how she's willing to name Cheney and Rumsfeld, but "the neocons" have no names -- they're just a faceless, nameless (and no doubt noseless) gaggle of anonymous "neocons". Why, to mention their names aloud might establish a pattern or an agenda or something. Can't have that, can we.

I am looking forward to your evaluation of the latest QE. We can rest easy since it seems #3 is the last one. Open ended is it not?
It seems Weimar is knocking at our door.
I read a column yesterday by someone or other that described the horrors the Germans went through with hyper inflation. This is not going to be fun regardless of how much popcorn and libations you have available.

"the hyperpower manifesto of the Project for the New American Century"

Just on points, you really sort of have to hand it to them; mis-labelling it the new "American" century was a stroke of genius.

"How’s that going for us?"

Depends what you think the goal was, I suppose. While I think the hyperaggressive posture/invade Iraq thing was and remains a massive mistake, one does have to admit the roundabout success of a certain obvious tack that, mysteriously, goes un-analyzed in the MSM (at least in sources I can still stand to read): bin-Laden and al-Qaeda were in essence attempting with 9/11 to institute a new type of open-source warfare against the United States; not simply asymmetrical, but open-source. Had this strategy been permitted to be seen as bearing useful fruit, numerous American and indeed global systems could have been forced to grind to a halt, causing all sorts of chaos. The fact that these things didn't come to pass (at least not yet anyway) has to be considered in any long-view evaluation of what the f%ck is going on. Which is a long way of saying, in reply to Dowd's snarky and childish question "How's that going for us?", "Well, better than what _you_ could do, anyway."

"the media must be truly fearful about the electoral backlash facing Obama as a result of the recent incidents in Libya"

Maybe they are, I haven't seen any hard data (it may not even exist); and while it's always amusing to watch their nostrils flare in that sort of feral unthinking brain-stem reaction that we've come to love them for (and for nothing else), I wonder.

After all, the Master Meme, which has been highly successfully injected into the American mind, is that White People Are Always Bad and Evil and Wrong. Given that the embassy attackers-slash-murderers are Noble Brown Non-Christian Types, it's entirely likely that over the next few weeks the whole thing will be successfully dissipated under the rubric of Arabs And Other Swarthy Types Are Always Right To Be Angry (We Don't Know Why, They Just Are), and back to business as usual.

Obama's fall campaign slogan should be: "America! It's already half-destroyed! Help us finish what we started!"

Anonymous Roundtine September 16, 2012 8:34 AM

The riots have been a non-stop gift to Romney. I'm surprised Obama didn't jump all over the Al-Qaeda angle, which is pretty clearly organizing the embassy attacks. His press secretary and his own Egypt comments compounded the errors.

On the bright side, Bernanke set off the fire with QE2. Now he'll burn it out by pouring gasoline on it with QE3. Egypt runs out of foreign reserves in a month, at which point they need food aid.

I've already seen this at terminal 5 at Heathrow. Several, what looked like Pakis, manning the metal detector and belt. A group of ME-looking young guys walked through the detector, one set it off. They just kept on walking, and the guys manning the detector did nothing.

They did, however, frisk the entire extended slavic family that was next in line. Then the same to my wife and me, two old white people. Practically missed my connection to Oslo because of those blithering idiots.

I think that Obama's bowing was for domestic political consumption, and was entirely disingenuous. None of those he bowed to have 7 or 8 (or is it 9) active carrier fleets at their command. However, it served to inflame the losers in the last election and thus, hopefully, keep his grand coalition together.

Also, it seems possible that Obama's keeping those foreign adventures (called wars) going served multiple purposes. Of course it rewarded certain domestic supporters but also serves to warn foreign supporters that they could be next.

This was all planned out long ago.

GENERAL WESLEY CLARK SPEAKING 2007 ON IRAN LIBYA SYRIA IRAQ AFRICA AND 911

One can only blame Obama in that he is just following the same foreign policy as his predecessors... created for them by think tanks like Project for a New American Century.

There’s been a massive influx of weapons in the area. A massive cache of weapons from Libya were completely looted, and we don’t know where these arms are. … We’re talking surface-to-air missiles.

Because no one could have thunk it even remotely possible. Or… just as planned.

No, no, no III. See, this only happened because those within our government are nincompoops and stupid. They didn’t really mean for this to happen. It was just the consequences of… of…

The only real objective to all of this is to destabilize the ME and N. Africa as a pretense to another catalyst. The non integrating gap must be brought into the core (The Pentagons New Map).

NOW, all "editorials" must be evaluated by the M or F, as well as the R or D, follopwing the byline.

Oh wait....the NYT isn't a particularly fair "paper of record" in THAT bit of "false" balance journalizationism.(yes, I simply made up that word, as well as it's meandering definition, as the "style" suits)

Expand on the first catalyst while pretending to be the good guys while creating a pretext for the next catalyst! You don’t follow do you?

"Is he a shrewd calculator or is he a mental case?"

"He's very good at misdirection."

I'm beginning to think that aside from a couple of his pet projects (like the crazypants Holder DOJ, and the project to turn whites into permanently bankrupted tax-slaves) Obama just doesn't have a very good grasp of what's going on. [Unlike Bush, who was just so stone-cold stupid that it didn't really matter what lines you told him to say, Obama I think is a combination of a guy who a) just doesn't care all that much and b) being an AA suit, he wouldn't really grasp it even if you did explain to him what's happening. Although I'm sure he's not a literally "stupid" man a la GWB, he quite clearly isn't as bright as he's been told all his life he is. There are tells.]

There's so many secret circuses and counter-circuses playing in DC that it's quite possible that all the different mutually contradictory scenarios are simultaneously operational, with nobody reporting directly to anybody else. A little like that great scene in Apocalypse Now...

CAPT. WILLARD: Who's the commanding officer here?
STONED SOLDIER: Man, I thought it was _you_.

On a side note, I love how the Dowd column above just sort of slyly shrugs and tacitly admits who was really behind the Iraq war. Remember back in 2004 or so, when it was the height of evil unspeakable antisemitism to suggest that the faceless "neocons" had engineered the whole thing, which couldn't possibly be true because How Dare You, and besides obviously Bush and Cheney were diabolical political masterminds at the controls 24/7 and how dare you mention that the neocons have a sort of thing about Israel? What are you, a nazi? Bush Is A Cowboy From Texas Who Wants To Steal All Teh OIL!!!11!!1 That's the explanation! It's those crazy Evangelical Christian Zionists who are to blame, making all teh trouble in teh Middle East!

And now here we are a few years later, and Dowd can quite comfortably kick back and say in passing, in the pages of the house organ, Oh yeah, of course, I mean everybody knows who pulled this caper, Cheney and Rumsfeld simply "abetted" it.

There must be some sort of in-house statute of limitations that's expired or something. Either that or they know they're holding so many poker chips that they just don't care who knows it any more.

Freedom, democracy --- things that simply will not work in the middle east --- they are a 500-1000 years away from being able able to govern themselves in a peaceful and civilized manner and until then we should not be supporting the removal of any of these so called "dictators" --- Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Libya .. etc and now Syria -- an ever growing list of examples of countries worse off ... Not knowing too much about every country in the ME.. it would seem that other than Israel is there any truly democratic and peaceful countries in the ME ?

Its been discussed here before how the really successful democracies tend to be those that are based on judeo-christian values... It might be informative to make a list and compare religion vs country vs indicators of peace/prosperity/human rights etc...

No, they weren't this desperate before. Idle Spectator is right that their industry is dying and that's pushing them towards insanity. But it's also more than that. The revolving door between the MSM and the Democrat Party (and it's afiiliated money laundering operations) has never spun faster or more lucratively. But that is on the verge of crashing down - the Democratic Party can't dole out the payola to loyal party hacks if it isn't in power, and the MSM shills are afraid they'll lose out on the gravy train. That's why even a "moderate" GOP candidate is such an unacceptable threat to them - it's breaking their rice bowl regardless of whether there's a significant policy difference or not.
