VPFL 2012 Week Two

84 Bailout Banksters   (1-1)
47 Luna City Gamma Rays   (1-1)

83 Greenfield Grizzlies  (1-1)
77 Moundsview Meerkats   (1-1)

76 '63Mercury Marauders (2-0)
36 D.C. Hangmen (0-2)

74 Fromundah Cheezheads (2-0)
43 RR Redbeards (0-2)

60 Bane Sidhe (2-0)
58 Suburban Churchians (0-2)

The Piranha of the Serengeti got off to a good start last week, but the injury to Aaron Hernandez and a disappointing underperformance by Aaron Rodgers sunk them.  I'm benching Rodgers this week, as I have less confidence in him against a pretty solid Seahawks defense than in Alex Smith against yet another sketchy Vikings secondary.

This is your weekly NFL thread.  As far as the NFL goes, it is increasingly apparent that the CJ vs AD question has been settled in favor of the latter.  It's not the Seahawks, but the Cardinals who have proved to be surprisingly good, and it will be interesting to determine which NFC Central team is worse, the Bears or the Vikings.  As for the Vikings, all we've learned is that Frazier is as overly conservative as Childress ever was.  Running the Woody Hayes offense for the first 50 minutes, then taking the training wheels off Christian Ponder for the last ten minutes is not the path to the playoffs.

That may have worked well if AD was 100 percent and running behind the offensive line of four years ago.  But he's not and he isn't.

CP7's biggest issue is definitely that O-line.
then taking the training wheels off Christian Ponder for the last ten minutes is not the path to the playoffs.
Nor is it the path to success for CP7.

CJ has totally fallen apart. I saw an all-22 film of the first 2 titans games... and look... the holes are there. For some reason... the dude is ignoring them... or just not seeing them.

There is no explaining it.

Blogger Nate September 23, 2012 12:10 PM

plus... I benched CJ and Welker today... so that pretty much assures that both will totally go off today.

Blogger Nate September 23, 2012 1:11 PM

this talk of cj has me thinking about things that were once awesome... so I have to ask...

Pandas?

really?

Anonymous Jabari September 23, 2012 1:25 PM

The Cardinals aren't "surprisingly good" - the D is good for sure, but the O is atrocious and they've gotten some breaks in the first couple weeks.

And yes, Pandas. *sigh* I'm not sure if I'm more afraid of that or everyone yelling "Gotta catch 'em all!"

Hopefully the raids are better than DS is...

Blogger Nate September 23, 2012 1:41 PM

holy shit!!!

The Titans just ran Homerun Throwback and scored.

Anonymous O.C. September 23, 2012 2:45 PM

My God in Heaven, who dresses Daryl Johnston? Plaid jacket, striped shirt, and a -- what the Hell is that pattern on his tie, anyway?

Whatever it is, whenever they cut away to the commentators, I get eyestrain. And when they cut away to Tony Siragusa on the sidelines... Well, let's just say that shooting him through a fisheye lens really delivers that "Jabba the Hutt in a Plaid Shirt" look.

How bout dem Vikins'?

Romo just took ditect blow to the head no call. Romo isnt allthere. Dumba... Refs

I'm completely heartsick that the Vikings have apparently been suspended for at least one game. Glad to see Fran Tarkenton was available to serve in replacement. With 3 minutes to go, they are going to have to get extremely creative in order to give this one away...

That was a surprise. What wasn't Tebow's fail at WR.

Anonymous WaterBoy September 23, 2012 4:02 PM

Lions defense doing as poorly as ever. Titans up by 7 at the 2-minute warning? Who'da thunk?

Anonymous WaterBoy September 23, 2012 4:05 PM

What the hell?!? Hold onto the ball!

Anonymous WaterBoy September 23, 2012 4:21 PM

YES! Hill engineers the comeback to force O/T!

Anonymous VD September 23, 2012 4:23 PM

Worst referees ever. They gave SF 5 timeouts! And nce you use your last timeout, YOU CANNOT CHALLENGE! And once the whistle is blown, THE BALL COMING OUT IS NOT A FUMBLE.

This is really getting ridiculous. Good win for the Vikes anyhow, though.

Anonymous outlaw x September 23, 2012 4:30 PM

What happended to the Titans Nate

Anonymous Daniel September 23, 2012 4:34 PM

Even NFL.com couldn't process more than 3 timeouts for 49ers. They declared the two extra SF timeouts as TV Timeouts! The online stat tracker doesn't have an incompetent ref subroutine.

Anonymous outlaw x September 23, 2012 4:35 PM

Congrats Vikings you beat a damnn good team.

Anonymous outlaw x September 23, 2012 4:38 PM

Tians just got screwed on a completion. The refs are sucking everywhere.

Anonymous Huckleberry - est. 1977 September 23, 2012 4:45 PM

You know the replacement refs are bad when Vegas has to shift lines by up to 7 points away from what they would ordinarily just to cover their asses. In other news, with the Saints playing the way they are, it really does feel like fall 1979 right now.
Not awful, but the very dictionary definition of mediocre.
As for the Titans, they are who we thought they were...

Blogger JDC September 23, 2012 4:53 PM

The ref's are announcing a review as the teams leave the field. Nice.

Anonymous WaterBoy September 23, 2012 4:58 PM

Steve Young had it right, re: the replacement refs. The NFL brass doesn't care, as long as the fans keep watching.

Consumer boycott!

Anonymous WaterBoy September 23, 2012 4:59 PM

Bah! Should have kicked the FG.

Blogger JDC September 23, 2012 5:02 PM

I liked that they went for it. You should be able to get 12 inches. Either way, great game to watch. Not often you get to see an onside kick recovery and a hail Mary. I'm just glad the niners lost. It makes a Lions loss almost bearable, but sheds some light on how the rest of their season will go.

Anonymous Go Titans September 23, 2012 5:04 PM

Can't believe I left the game with a minute to go! Crazy game!

Anonymous outlaw x September 23, 2012 5:08 PM

Watch out for the Cardinals this year.

Blogger Nate September 23, 2012 5:13 PM

I am still trying to recover from that game. Apparently the Titans are now the only team in NFL history to score 5 TDs on plays of 60 yards or more.

5.

5 plays of 60 yards or more.

And then almost lost.

I need bourbon.

I'm enjoying a couple fingers of Glenlivet (12 yr). Oh Lions...I now believe that Psalm 13 was written specifically for Lions fans

1 How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? 3 Look on me and answer, O LORD my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death; 4 my enemy will say, "I have overcome him," and my foes will rejoice when I fall. 5 But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. 6 I will sing to the LORD, for he has been good to me.

Anonymous WaterBoy September 23, 2012 5:31 PM

I was sitting there, chanting over and over like a mantra, kick the field goal...kick the field goal...kick the field goal...

Their quota of luck had already been used up in the previous quarter. And any team can make a goal line stand for one play.

Blogger Nate September 23, 2012 5:47 PM

The field goal was absolutely the right choice. But I can tell you... as a titans fan... I was terrified they were going to go for it.. and I still can't believe the titans stopped it.

Blogger Nate September 23, 2012 6:08 PM

swartz just said they didn't intend to snap the ball... they were gonna try to draw the titans offsides and then call timeout and kick it. Ball got snapped. epic fail.

Anonymous WaterBoy September 23, 2012 6:11 PM

Postgame interview, Schwartz says it was supposed to draw Titans offside, not actually be snapped. Still a bad decision, IMO.

Anonymous WaterBoy September 23, 2012 6:11 PM

You saw the same interview, I guess....

Blogger Nate September 23, 2012 6:14 PM

I hope its the truth. Swartz was always a standup guy in TN... I would hate to see him cop out like that and lie about it

Blogger Nate September 23, 2012 6:16 PM

and after seeing the titans deal with the detroit passrush all day.. I am about to conclude that the Titans have the best pass blocking o-line in the league... and the worst run blocking o-line in the league.

Anonymous Go Titans September 23, 2012 6:17 PM

He also said something about crowd noise. The place was practically empty at that time wasn't it?

Anonymous WaterBoy September 23, 2012 6:20 PM

Yeah, I don't know if I buy it. If it was not supposed to go, there was a total miscommunication to Hill. You can see his ankle rock, and he was leaning in from the get-go -- he had every intention of going.

So, wrong call or miscommunication -- either way, that was all on the coaching staff.

Blogger Nate September 23, 2012 6:26 PM

well... the game was to amazing to get to hung up on it.. fact is... if they kick the field goal.. what are the odds they stop the titans and keep them out of field goal range?

I mean they didn't stop the titans all day.

Blogger JDC September 23, 2012 6:29 PM

The Titans would have probably run the kickoff back to within field goal range.

Anonymous Outlaw X September 23, 2012 6:32 PM

"well... the game was to amazing to get to hung up on it.. fact is... if they kick the field goal.. what are the odds they stop the titans and keep them out of field goal range?

That was an incredible game I saw the ending. I also recorded the Vikings game, I may go back and count the time outs.

Since the replacement refs I record the cowboys every week even though I am watching them.

Anonymous Outlaw X September 23, 2012 6:39 PM

right now I am flipping back and forth between the eagle and Broncos game, I want both of them to lose. The Eagles are in our division and the broncos let Tebow go for pretty boy. The Jets won I noticed on a coach trying to Ice a 24 yrd field goal which was blocked and he nailed the second one and I laughed my butt off. No Idea who was quarter backing today for the Jets though.

Blogger Nate September 23, 2012 6:55 PM

the whole... icing the kicker at the last second thing is just epic stupid. I love.... LOVE seeing it backfire like that.

Anonymous Outlaw X September 23, 2012 7:09 PM

"the whole... icing the kicker at the last second thing is just epic stupid. I love.... LOVE seeing it backfire like that."

Who started that anyway? wasn't it the old Steelers coach can't think of his name right now but I always hated him and called him sour puss for so long I forget his name. Wait Cower or something like that.

Anonymous zen0 September 23, 2012 8:07 PM

Apparently, according to one announcer, icing the kicker results in a 3% better success rate for the kicking team. It gives them more time to get set.

AND

I found that I enjoy seeing Pittsburgh lose.

Anonymous No_Limit_Bubba™ September 23, 2012 10:04 PM

Vikings winning...

Raiders beating Steelers...

Starting to get a 1976 vibe.

Regarding Johnson, it's called "I got paid"

Ponder has #1 completion percentage in League. No TO's.
Nice.

Blogger Peter Garstig September 24, 2012 2:48 AM

Ponder is already there where Alex Smith is now...and it took Smith 6-7 years. Very solid performance.

Have to give credit to the Vikings O-Line. They faced probably the best front 7 in the league and didn't give up one sack, stuck to the run even though they couldn't break a big one. This win goes to the O-Line.

And finally, the Coaches show some guts and it pays off. You have to show guts on offense with people like Peterson and Harvin. The first TD pass of Ponder was just a beauty. He makes some strange decisions sometimes, but he looks good under pressur most of the time. Not to forget: he should have had a pick-6 for the second week in a row.

Second TD catch was incredible by Rudolph, but Ponder could have thrown to a wide open Peterson. Everybody saw that except Ponder.

That's a team that will play up or down to the opponents all year, which makes for very interesting games.

And who's at the bottom of the NFC north? The Lions, who else.

Anonymous WaterBoy September 24, 2012 12:03 PM

Vox: "which NFC Central team"

Wait...what? Somebody's stuck in the past....

Peter Garstig: "And who's at the bottom of the NFC north? The Lions, who else."

Give it time. Next weekend will be telling.

Blogger Jamie-R September 25, 2012 12:21 AM

How about these refs!

Is the NFL just stupid greedy, is this commissioner a tard? You have enough issues with pro refs in pro sports, it's just beyond stupidity to employ anyone else because of money disputes.
