John Scalzi squicked me out too

Sometimes, the world is a vastly amusing place.  It's at times like these that I think perhaps Dr. Pangloss was right and this is the best of all possible worlds.  John appears to be having some belated regrets about google-bombing himself, but you know, that's the risk you take when you write "satire".  If our revered SFWA President doesn't like to see "John Scalzi is a rapist" floating around the Internet, then perhaps Mr. Scalzi should refrain from writing articles on the Internet in which he rhapsodizes about the pleasure he takes in raping women.  It's a difficult concept, I know, but I'm confident that our fearless leader will one day figure it out.

I find it particularly funny that he claims I'm flailing about and providing unintentional comedy gold:
Blogger Joé McKen catches one of my regular detractors making a spectacularly dumb move, and then watches him flail about, trying to rationalize his unintentional comedy gold. No, I’m not going to link to the detractor’s site directly, because among other things the site is full of racism, sexism and general ick; McKen’s got the links if you want them, and all the relevant details if you don’t.

Over on McKen’s site, one of the commenters there, who is also a frequent commenter here, wonders about whether my detractor could be on the hook for libel. Certainly the detractor’s headline for the particular blog entry in question (“John Scalzi is a rapist”) is factually inaccurate; the detractor is (now, at least) aware it’s so; presuming McKen’s account of event is accurate, which I have no reason to doubt, it wasn’t published with the intent to be satire or hyperbole nor has much chance of being considered so now; and obviously, being branded a rapist, and having it believed, would be detrimental to my public and private life. So if I had a mind to sue my detractor for libel, he might have to hope I am enough of a public figure that it would obviate all those other factors and he wouldn’t be squashed like a bug.

But why sue? I’m happy to have him leave it up as a testament to his both his credulity while he thought it was true, and his mendacity now that he knows that it’s not. It’s a cogent reminder of what both his opinion and credibility is worth.
Credulous, mendacious, and libelous.  There's a combination one doesn't often see.  I'm pleased to know that he's happy I'm leaving it up, though, because the thought of taking it down had never even occurred to me.  The fact of the matter is that John Scalzi announced to the world that he is a rapist.  He is on record at his site declaring as much.  He can claim that his admission is "satire" until he turns blue if he likes, but the fact of the matter is that you cannot come out and say the sorts of things that he does and subsequently complain that your statements have been quoted at length and taken at face value.  It would certainly be interesting to see him attempt to see me "squashed like a bug":

"He libeled me, your honor!"

"How so?"

"Well, um, he kind of quoted me...."

"He QUOTED you?"

"Yeah, but he KNEW what I was saying wasn't true!"

"And how do you know he knew that?"

I most certainly do not know that John Scalzi is not a rapist.  I didn't know it then and I don't know it now.  He said he is, now he says his previous statement was factually inaccurate... for all I know, John spends his evenings raping his cats in between making calls on behalf of the Obama campaign in Ohio.

His argument becomes even more confusing since he's also claiming a) I didn't understand his satire, and, b) there is no reason to doubt my own post was not published with the intent to be satire or hyperbole.  So, apparently we're to believe that I knowingly libeled him by quoting him about something I believed to be true.  At this point, I'm left to conclude that John's best defense against having it generally believed that he is a rapist is that anyone reading his increasingly convoluted thoughts on the matter will assume he is a teenage girl.

Now here is the punchline.  John is amazed how deeply he got into the head of a rapist in writing the piece:

"I wrote it from the point of view of a rapist, I think obviously in retrospect, because it would have a stronger impact if I did. A couple of people have asked me (not entirely unwarily) how I could get into the head of someone like that. The short answer is, folks, fiction is what I do. I try to put myself in the heads of a lot of different people. I will note that in this case, I was very happy to get out of that particular head as quickly as possible. I don’t often squick myself out writing a piece, but this is one time I definitely did."

He definitely squicked me out too!  I mean, John is such a good and talented writer that I truly believed he was an actual rapist when I read his piece.  It was a shockingly powerful piece.  It was one of the most hauntingly powerful pieces of writing on the subject I have ever seen.  It touched me in places I have never been touched before, without my consent.  He raped us all with his words and I feel hurt, violated, and confused.  I am still convinced that John Scalzi is a rapist, despite his unconvincing ex post facto denials, because obviously no fiction writer, even a best-selling, talented writer like John, could possibly have made up anything THAT convincing.

Well, the confessusation has not made too far yet, for when you type "John Scalzi is" into Google, the only autosuggestion it provides is "John Scalzi is an idiot."

Maybe he should sue Google as well. Or is the truth still a defense against libel?

Blogger V October 28, 2012 3:55 PM

I was writing the same level of sophisticated "satire" in high school. Later, I learned that being a shocking prick and satire are not actually one in the same. Scalzi has yet to learn this lesson. Weird.

No, I don't go to SFWA functions, never have. That's a pretty fair description; I used to read his blog regularly a few years ago. He's basically a bitchy little gamma with a modicum of writing talent and some good instincts for self-promotion. He's not actually stupid nor is he a bad writer, his problem is that he has no original ideas and he's limited by his left-liberal ideology, so he has to resort to gimmicks and parodies. Which can work. Redshirts is actually an amusing idea, even if it wasn't executed very well.

Larry Niven once accused me and a date at a Con of looking too clean-cut to be into SF. The bias must abound.

At a book signing with 10 or 12 authors, I was once told I couldn't possibly be an SF/F author because of my appearance. Looking around, it was readily apparent that I was the only one who had seen the inside of a gym within the last decade. I think there are some fantasy authors who keep themselves in shape these days, but they're still in the minority.

Lawsuit? Bring it on baby! Maybe he can tag team with Michael Mann the infamous raper of weather studies.

All that remains is for Scalzi to throw himself in front of a train like the teen who allowed herself to be videoed being gang banged by the football squad.

I'm not a cat lover, apparently Scalzi is, and somebody needs to turn him in to the SFPCA and get those cats rescued.

Anonymous Orville October 28, 2012 5:25 PM

Anonymous David of One October 28, 2012 5:28 PM

Explorations into the perverse eh? Thinks himself kinda, sorta, maybe like a Heinlein (Time Enough For Love). And there are dozens, likely hundreds of other writers whose perversion is put on display as art.

Or maybe more like a Polanski? An artist whom induldges his art in what he lives? Maybe.

Taking a path taken by too many in real life made fantasy ... or is it?

It was rumored and written about 30 years ago or so how Heinlein and the little clique he ran with at least once a year or so induldged in more than fantasy to promote his art.

It isn't art to directly perverse oneself ... it calls into question if his real life, what the world is allowed to see in the light, is the only satire being proffered.

Anonymous David of One October 28, 2012 5:41 PM

We should be mindful that peversity of this kind is not limited to "art" but also to "science", "law", "justice", "religion" ... the difference, I would assert, is that in secular societies all of these are held to be more "sacred" than one's belief in God and Jesus Christ.

No no, work and reeducation camps. Promote the progressive ideals and have them contribute some useful labor to the State (12 ft deep canal works and the like) before the bucket is literally kicked.

As I've heard it put, revolutionaries like these tend to regard themselves so much the majority that they'll usually call themselves legion without realizing the full extent of that reference.

Johnny is no less perverse as anyone that uses the extreme case example so as to justify any and all murder of the unborn.

Worse yet Johnny wishes to score political points regarding the choice of an American President.

Fascinating.

For the logic is not just tortured but the motive is as perverse and evil as the act itself. The wholesale slaughter of babies in the womb or at the time of birth for votes and the willingness to forsake all other considerations of a political candidate so long as the slaughter is permitted for one of the worst of crimes committed to a woman or for no reason whatsoever.

It matters not that one candidate endorses the wholesale butchering of unborn children (for votes) and the other candidate argues for the life of the unborn (regardless of votes), and (implicitly) for more personal responsibility and individual integrity by all women and men.

The perversity is that one candidate, for example, can be a known butcher and thief of human life & minds for the sole purpose of power & control ... and too many women will give their vote as a whore gives their body with no consideration that the one butcher intends to take the life of the other.

In this case once the vote is given for the communist, socialist, marxist ... history demonstrates that eventually life and liberty is worth less than the vote and the life is forfeit.

In the end no one else is to have a say even though everyone is required to pay. No discussion. No logic. No responsibility ... just "I want to do what I want to do and someone ... everyone will be required to pay".

Why? Because too many women are children ... lying, conniving and immature ... whom are all too willing to hand over their vote, like their bodies, so as to get what they've been told they want and in doing so are absolved of any responsibility as willing victims.

And perverse little Johnny?

Let us make his little "satire" be about women murdering their unborn children instead of men raping women and the real victims be that of the murdered child for which the woman ("mother") enjoys greater power and control of the innocent ... even more than the rapist .. all of this to garner the vote for a liar and thief.

Perverse little Johnny is a whoring, pimping rapist for votes on top of the dead little bodies of babies taken by their mothers so they feel like they have power and control over their lives.

For their votes, too many women don’t know (or care) they’ve willingly given themselves over to be raped on top of the lives of their babies.

I don’t think it’s possible for a person to do what you do (write and work in technology) and read his piece as anything but satire. Because to do so would make you incredibly insipid. And I don’t believe that you are.

No, I fear you are mistaken. I am reliably informed by Messrs. McKen and Scalzi that I did nothing of the sort.

You certainly aren’t obligated to like Mr. Scalzi (and clearly you don’t), but until you address his piece in a more honest fashion, your responses to him will read less like a critic with salient points to make and more like a jealous and lesser-known author with an axe to grind.

So, I am somehow obligated to address what you're telling me is satire in a more honest fashion or I am jealous that I'm not the president of the SFWA and the author of a book called "Fuzzy Nation"? That is a FASCINATING argument, madam.

Anonymous Daniel October 29, 2012 3:53 AM

Scalzi congratulates himself way too much for his rape-faking skills. No self-respecting rapist in his right mind would ever fantasize about getting the victim pregnant.

The child support cost risk alone would be a major deterrent. A real rapist would be thanking Mr. Fantasy Conservative Politician for all the wonderful conservative work he has done in maintaining legal abortion since 1973, so that it can help destroy any DNA-carrier evidence linking him back to the crime.

So, not only does Scalzi not know what satire is, he doesn't know what rape is.

Then you and JS would have to duke it out in the letters to the editor pages of the NYRB or something. There'd be an editor involved, who would prevent the scuffle from going over the cliff or straying into the squick. There probably wouldn't be too many of these weird new internet words and tropes like squick or tl/dr etc and the bizarre cutesy language we've come to adopt. And we'd all have to wait a week at a time to see the next installment of the feud.

There was something to be said for the pre-internet way of doing things. If we had to go back to it though, the difference between now and 1991 is now we'd know what we'd given up. It's funny to have lived on both sides of the divide. Even people who are now in their twenties don't really have any effective experience of what life was like before all this computer stuff.

Huh.

Q: What does it sound like when Vox and the Ilk take turns verbally raping John and the Fluffer Brigade?

A: Squik. Squick. Squick. Squick...SQUEE!!!! *sigh*

Anonymous JohnR October 29, 2012 8:15 AM

Vox: Why do you bother with this guy?

If you had never mentioned him, I never would have heard of him.

Anonymous VD October 29, 2012 8:32 AM

Why do you bother with this guy?

How can you read this post and not know the answer to that question? Because it amuses me. I am an AWCA, after all. Inspiring John into a furious self-administered public beating has amused me since I first encountered him and he cited a female professor teaching lesbianism in Hindu film as proof that women were not only capable of, but interested in, hard science.

A normal person would just laugh and ruefully admit that maybe he shouldn't have handed out such a big stick to anyone who felt like hitting him with it. But then, a normal person wouldn't have written such a retarded post in the first place. John is unusually sensitive and his ego won't permit him to admit when he's in over his head, so the combination makes him good for hours of entertainment.

It's a fairly typical problem for the complacent left-liberal. Because they religiously insulate themselves from criticism and seek to surround themselves with like-minded individuals, they have no idea how to effectively anticipate or respond to it.

Most hilarious? The feminists hate him for lying about being a rapist.

No one pisses off a feminist like a woman-worshiping gamma.

The comedy writes itself, many layers deep...

Now I still love all the women, even the feminists.

I can just see him chasing down the feminists, with tears in his eyes, begging them to accept and love him because he and he alone truly understands and cares for them. (My guess is that the chase wouldn't last long, I'd reckon he'd make it about 5o yds before lactic acid and labored breathing take over).

John enjoys lecturing his readers including this post:

http://whatever.scalzi.com/2012/08/10/a-tangential-personal-note-on-creepers-and-me/

..but he also made an incredible admission in that post, he once stalked a woman at a convention. He calls it creeping (don't they all have a code word for it), but it was stalking nonetheless. Not only does he creep/stalk this poor woman but he also shows how good he is at it with this statement:
"When some time after that she was with a group of people I did know and enjoyed talking to, I joined that group, made sure I didn’t focus all my attention on her and got to know her a little better by listening to her talk to others in the group and to the group in general, and talked to her like I talked to everyone else in the group."
Meanwhile his peepers were probably bulged so he could get some serious leer time in.

He claims this site is "full of racism, sexism and general ick". I think he's proven which site has more "ick" in it.

Yours is a very creative and entertaining way to respond to such idiocy. My typical response is just to get mad at people for being such twisted up morons, but laughing at their expense is probably far more effective and a much better way to retain one's sanity.

You're my most favoritest Troll, Vox. I'm squeeing all over my keyboard and it's covered with my ick. thats disgusting

Holy cow, Annie. That link is clueless super creep comedy gold!

He ran away because he was attracted to a woman and realized she would find him repulsive?

That is the most gamma hypersensitive cluelessness I've ever heard. Now he's found himself in her friend ("one of my best friends" according to him) orbit and his wife thinks it is pathetically cute.

Harsh.

I enjoy Scalzi's smug and cheeky cluelessness. If he wasn't so removed from reality, he'd most certainly be drowning in a puddle of tears.

And you know how salt irritates his delicate skin.

Why does Scalzi cry after sex?

I'm still having a hard time with some of the comments from his readers:

"Like you, I support broad abortion rights, believing a woman should be able to choose an abortion right up to the time of birth (and possibly beyond—see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Singer)."

He didn't even distance himself from this comment, in fact he responded to the commenter without mentioning it, now I have to believe that Scalzi supports infanticide, real sick stuff man.

Yeah -- these people are totally unhinged. Most of these same folks who have no problem with infanticide are outraged when someone kills an animal. Their belief system is a suicidal one.

Maybe he could resign like this person

I thought this para was interesting:

I’m tired of watching my students produce amazing things, which show their true understanding of 21st century skills, only to see their looks of disappointment when they don’t meet the arbitrary expectations of low-level state and district tests that do not assess their skills.

Just what the hell are 21st century skills?

Blogger Markku October 30, 2012 12:26 PM

Maybe he could resign like this person

"UCPS was the place to be progressive" ... "my higher-level and deep thinking lessons"

Yeah, I can picture it...

VD: "So, I am somehow obligated to address what you're telling me is satire in a more honest fashion or I am jealous that I'm not the president of the SFWA and the author of a book called "Fuzzy Nation"? That is a FASCINATING argument, madam."

Actually, no it's not, because it's not an argument. It's an opinion derived from observation. And you're not obligated to do anything.
I did have a chance to read up a bit on Mr. Scalzi. So: The SFWA presidency, the Hugo nominations, the ascendancy to the the New York Times best seller list, the 50,000 visitors-a-day blog and a novel being adapted to film with Wolfgang Petersen attached to direct? Goodness. Talk about an Alpha who can seriously put the bread on the table.

Somehow I'm not convinced that Stephen King is Satan (The Stand), an abused adolescent pyrokinetic girl (Carrie), and a rabid dog (Cujo).

If I see an issue in a second-hand store, I'll pick up a book by the author of this blog and find out what he is. Because if there would be anyone who could not separate a fiction writer from fiction, it would be someone who lacks the capacity to separate himself from the characters he himself writes.
