A timely resignation

Interesting timing for this resignation, considering that CIA Director David Petraeus was scheduled to testify about Bengazi next week before Congress:
Central Intelligence Agency Director David Petraeus has resigned, citing "extremely poor judgment" for having an extramarital affair.

Petraeus, 60, told President Barack Obama of the affair on Thursday and offered to resign, a senior official told NBC News. Obama accepted his resignation in a phone call Friday afternoon.

"Yesterday afternoon, I went to the White House and asked the President to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position," Petraeus said in a letter to CIA colleagues. "After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours."

"This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation," Petraeus said in the letter.
This is why it's always helpful to have a few skeletons in your closet if you want to move up the ladder.  The powers that be don't like high-ranking individuals who don't come with an easy self-destruct button.  The question is why someone felt the need to press it for Petraeus now.

While I think we already know why that button was pressed, it certainly is interesting.

Considering the whoppers they've pulled on Americans in the last 4 years, I'm pretty sure Benghazi will be quickly swept under the rug.

Birth certificate? Incredibly obvious forgery.
Obamacare? "We have to pass it to know what's in it"

I keep somehow overestimating the American intelligence and ability to put together 2 and 2.

There's GOT to be an ethical way to make money off this somehow....

I suspect the affair is a cover story for some other reason.

The CIA was arming Libyan rebels out of the consulate in Benghazi. The consulate came under attack and the President let them die by refusing aid. The CIA retaliated by releasing e-mails and other documents detrimental to Obama's assertion it was all due to a movie. The CIA has effectively turned on Obama. They are at war with each other. Obama is purging his enemies. He must if his Presidency is going to survive. He has made enemies of some very serious individuals. This will not end well!

There are a lot of Mormons in the FBI and CIA as their missionary trips have them learn foreign languages and so they are recruited.

The question is why someone felt the need to press it for Petraeus now.

The timing strongly suggests revenge on the part of the CIA. Petraeus was going to support his man Obama in the hearings on Benghazi. With Petraeus gone, Obama is going to be flapping in the wind. The CIA ousted Petraeus to stick it to Obama for letting two of their men die. Looks like they are now at war with Obama. This should be most interesting.

I am still not understanding why resigning would protect him from testifying. Resigning doesn't make the knowledge/evidence go away. They could just supoena him couldn't they? I guess that would take one of the lawyer ilk to answer.

Above poster was correct. Obama won't get away with pissing off the CIA. The country maybe, but not the spooks.

Nixon became a lame dick president (is this not how you say in your countries?) immediately due to watergate. He was a Republican, so Woodward and Bernstein were willing to follow the rabbit hole with the map they were given.

With this one, I would be surprised if anyone in the MSM would bother, for obvious reasons.

Either Obama wanted him out or the CIA wanted him out. If Petraeus is the kind of guy who would tell the truth, then it's Obama who wants him out. If Obama thought he could count on Petraeus to cover things up, then it's the CIA that wants him out.

The word now is that he is not going to be testifying. Congress could still ask him, but for now he's no longer the spokesman for the CIA and somebody else from the CIA will be testifying about Benghazi instead of him. Meanwhile, as someone has already pointed out, if he committed some kind of serious breach by screwing around with his biographer while in Afghanistan, then he could be facing a court martial. If so, he's really out. Either way, this whole thing looks like an effort to keep him from testifying. My money is on the CIA revenge scenario.

Blogger IM2L844 November 09, 2012 10:21 PM

Since Obama is such a Clinton fanboi, maybe he'll follow Bill's example and ask Ken Starr look into this...you know, just to clear his name and all.

> If Obama thought he could count on Petraeus to cover things up, then it's the CIA that wants him

Obama sat on the news for at least a whole day, probably trying to come up with to promote him or keep him. I would wager this one is on the CIA. The general has a long history - his nickname has been been David "Betray-Us" for a few decades apparently.

CIA is a long running, deep bureaucracy with a lot of institutional memory. The CIA safe house that was near the consulate in Bengahzi just happened to have a full load of CIA ex-military operators on hand.

There is obviously more to the story.

Anonymous dh November 09, 2012 10:26 PM

> There have been rumblings about "watergating" Obama. This resignation is the opening scene?

It is much more likely that Obama tosses Holder, and installs someone who starts investigating GOP-led corruption in the House, as a cudgel to beat Boehner into submission. The majority will be small enough that if the White House can indict, or force to resign, a small handful of GOP lawmakers - for say financial impropriety or ethics violations, then the House could tip with a defection or two to the Democrats. This is always a danger when control is thin.

This could be it, but it's more likely that the CIA was illegally running weapons and/or other things (could be drugs again). The State Dept. was involved, which put the consulate under protection of CIA and DSS. The Administration came up with the cover story to buy time for the CIA to unwind it's illegal operations at the nearby safe house. The FBI and other investigators were kept away from Libya as it was "too hot", and of course the military can't go there because that's an invasion and a military operation which was not approved under the War Powers Act (which was already stretched the point where the House GOP nearly blocked funding to all middle-east operations during what was supposed to be a show only vote). The FBI and others were only let in once the relevant contacts and evidence had been cleaned by the CIA.

The timeline that was released was not favorable to the CIA, it was in fact damaging enough that Petraus was going to have to defend it in hearing. This is a good smoke screen, give them some blood but not enough to kill the patient. The general was a good solider that could be relied on to say the party line, like in his Iraq hearings when he refused to admit that the existing clear-and-hold strategy was short a few brigades of manpower. I suspect the reason that he is not testifying is that certain members of the GOP were briefed into the weapons program, and as such, Congress and the WH did not trust him to take a hit to reputation when he had covered himself by briefing in the GOP. (Remember, a good chunk of the GOP wants to arm the Libyan rebels. It could be that the Administration cut a deal with the House to not press War Powers issues in return for the CIA running operations in Libya and/or Syria).

As far as enemies goes, there is no one left in DC that is as powerful as Pres. Obama. Not in the Pentagon, not in the CIA, and not anywhere else. Between now and his 2nd inauguration, he has complete power to shuffle his whole administration, including replacing people flat out, and not suffer any political repercussions at all. The incoming Senate will be much more deferential to his picks anyways. So it doesn't really make sense that Obama would take him out now (at a cost) instead of simply waiting it out - unless he really shouldn't' testify.

Anonymous Cinco November 09, 2012 11:29 PM

There is another less likely scenario that may play out. The General still testifies and absolutely throws the administration under the bus. By putting his skeleton out front, he simply reduces the administration's ability to discredit him.

This scenario is unlikely; if he had really wanted to hurt Obama he would have done so before the vote. His wife may want out too, and they may have just agreed to wait until after the election. Time will tell.

Anonymous Anonymous November 09, 2012 11:37 PM

Scandals always come down on presidents in their second term. Nixon with Watergate, Reagan and Iran-Contra, Clinton with his blow jobs. It makes me wonder why Obama even ran for a second term. I always figured there was way too much heat on the guy that was more or less installed as a farce to tear down as much as possible as quickly as possible, but in a second term there is much more of a chance that his meddling will catch up to him. I can't imagine he doesn't feel exposed. Either his arrogance has convinced him he can navigate the minefield cleanly or his handlers forced him back in.

As a one term guy he was set, now he is opened up to every last criminal act he's committed all over again. Very risky move I would say for such a political type. Too many loose ends on the first go around.

It's possible the media can cover him again but he has picked a fight with a lot of inside people and not even Stephanopoulos can protect him from them.

Vince Foster was just a man who liked interior decorating. He could be such a bitch sometimes when it came to selecting fabrics. That's why he was depressed and inconsolable; he could not decide between the paisley and the plaid.

Clay....not a CZ connoisseur, but I have fired my bud's CZ P01 on several occasions, and it shoots straighter than my IWI Baby Eagle or Berretta PX4. I don't like the ergonomics as much, but the accuracy is impressive. As for 9mm vs .45, it's all a matter of preference. Personally, I don't want to be shot by a 9mm any more than a .45. It's also worth noting that the caliber of choice for professional close-quarter wet-work 'operatives' is none other than the itty-bitty .22 LR.
