Come see the violence inherent in the system

Help, help, I'm being threatened!  And by the SFWA South-Central Regional Director, no less.  At 3:30 AM, I was returning from a late night out with Silvio and the boys when I noticed literally hundreds of entries coming from a site belonging to leading science fiction author and international cross-dressing star Jim Hines.  Naturally, being the secure and self-confident image of modern masculinity, I immediately hastened to scour his site for every reference to me.

Imagine the horror and fear that struck me when I read the following:

Ah, yes. Mr. Beale. When I decided to run for re-election as SFWA South-Central Regional Director, someone asked me what I would do if Mr. Beale won the Presidential election. I replied, "Ask my friends to start a bail fund."
Naturally, I was panic-stricken by the violent implications of the Regional Director's threat.  After I got off the phone with the local police, Homeland Security, the FBI, and Interpol, and managed to compose myself following an intense round of aromatherapy, some yoga exercises, and about a gallon of green tea, I posted the following in the Questions for Candidates section of the SFWA Forum:

Two questions for Lee Martindale: It was brought to my attention that yesterday, you wrote the following on SFWA member Jim Hines's web site: "When I decided to run for re-election as SFWA South-Central Regional Director, someone asked me what I would do if Mr. Beale won the Presidential election. I replied, "Ask my friends to start a bail fund.""

1. What did you mean by indicating that you would need a bail fund in the event of my election as SFWA President?(1)
2. Do you believe that threatening criminal activity and violence is appropriate for an officer of the SFWA Board?

I note that this is the second implication of violence an SFWA member has directed towards me since I declared my candidacy. Two open questions for everyone else:

1. Are these implied threats of criminality and/or violence acceptable behavior on the part of SFWA members, and in the case of Ms Martindale, current Board members?
2. Should Ms Martindale resign her position and terminate her candidacy due to her implied threats of criminal activity?

I find it hard to see how I, or any other elected SFWA official, could be expected to work in a productive manner with Ms Martindale in the knowledge that she may resort to criminal activity and physical violence over a mere difference of opinion.

(1) Ms Martindale explained that she was, in fact, implying violence, although she claimed that she only meant violence of the self-defensive variety.

Let's guess at her politics: Who thinks she purports to believe in coming together and talking things out, and also has a knee-jerk reaction to guns of wanting the government to disarm all the law-abiding people of America?

Vox,

In case you’ve missed the point of this group, they’re a bunch of science fiction writers. Everything they write is fantasy. No one takes anything they write seriously. I’ve never understood what you find appealing being part of a group of pimply faced geeks sitting around in a life-long circle jerk. Frankly you could do more for the world of fiction if you’d set down and finish writing the sequels to Rebel Moon, than anything you could accomplish as king of the Socially F**Ked Writers Association (SFWA).*

Unless of course the goal of this exercise to make John Scalzi both wet his pants and cry at the same time.

Blogger Shimshon February 02, 2013 12:44 PM

I don't really care about the SFWA at all, but I gotta say, this campaign of yours if great comedy.

Anonymous Gx1080 February 02, 2013 12:44 PM

"Which does tend to reinforce my gut feeling that he’s running for president for the laughs. "

You would think that proffesional authors would be a little faster on the uptake.

On the climate, water is wet.

No doubt Ms. Martindale wets her pants too. Naked aggression of the sort that Vox displays turns women on.

You might as reasonably ask what I find appealing about belonging to Mensa. Actually, the appeal is the same. The mere fact of my membership infuriates all the right people. It destroys their illusion of superiority.

i used to publish fiction in the eighties, fairly successfully, but dumped the whole gig as i saw that writing, publishing, editing, and lit/english departments in academica had become irrepararably, and happily, politicized . . . and most especially, feminized

aside from ellison and a couple others, everyone was genuflecting to the womens' superiority/p.c. diktat, which all seemed rather the opposite of what i was attempting to do (write fiction with subtexts of truth)

i never looked back at the "writers industry" in amerika, and never regretted leaving the Group for more masculine pastures . . . seeing how the field was already packed with moocows, and still is

in hindsight, i realize all those solipsistic and "superintelligent" people had nothing to do with me, still dont, and never will

Anonymous Stickwick February 02, 2013 1:11 PM

This Martindale woman sounds eerily similar to the one at Scalzi's site, who had homicidal cannibal fantasies about alpha men. What is it with these women and threats of violence?

Irony Alert: According to this, Martindale is "Mediation Specialist of the Grievance Committee" and SFWA Ombudsman.

Further, on her website, Martindale describes herself as a "warrior," who "takes pleasure" in firearms and blades and implies she's skilled with them. Vox, consider screen-cap'ing that website and using it to show that her threat is credible.

Blogger Res Ipsa February 02, 2013 1:15 PM

“You might as reasonably ask what I find appealing about belonging to Mensa.”

Membership in MENSA says “I’m smarter than you”. Membership in SWFA says “I have a small penis and no chance of using it with a real girl”. I admit the hand wringing and angst you’ve managed to inflict on the perpetually self-absorbed is amusing. If you win, be sure to get a picture of you slapping McRapey on the ass when he hands you the crown.

That's bull. Nobody worries about a bail fund if they're considering righteous and lawful self-defense. The police don't arrest people -- especially women -- in obvious and credible cases of self-defense.

Anonymous Stickwick February 02, 2013 1:27 PM

Nah, I don't buy it. I think she's full of something, not sure what.

You don't know that for sure. Now, while you're probably right -- the threat just seems like macho-bluster, especially as she values the warrior label -- the point of all this is to call these people out for using the same tactics they rail against. It's especially unseemly for the Ombudsman to be making threats, in jest or not, against a member of her organization.

Some might think this off topic, but then some might think that the differences between the colonists and the Crown in the 1700s was also a mere difference of opinion.

In The True History of the American Revolution by Fisher we find:

England might have refrained still longer from forcing an outbreak, if that great corporation, The East India Company, had not brought a pressure on the government which could not be resisted. The company was at that time in a bad condition, and was generally supposed to be bankrupt. Its stock was rapidly depreciating, and the fall of such a vast concern would precipitate a financial panic.

Does that not remind us of anything?

The East India Company and the government were closely allied. ... was really a branch of the government for the control of India; and it afterwards became merged in a department of the government

Where is our Samuel Adams?

From The True History of the American Revolution by Fisher.

Samuel Adams and the radicals had strong grounds for believing that the course of years would not necessarily bring independence without a war. ... that the mass of people, no matter how numerous they became, would forget the past and be content to live along under an easy yoke or with a sort of semi-independence.

The issues are still the same.

Also, we can see why the federal government wants people to remember some sort of mythical revolution where the British were always and only evil in their actions. We can also see why the FedGov wants to control the propaganda fed to our young.

Anonymous Mr Green Man February 02, 2013 2:17 PM

Maybe you have the wrong opinion, but nobody here has any issue with the government, except perhaps some minor policy issues that can be fixed with some tweaks here and there through the legislative process.

I've found this whole thing to be greatly amusing and instructive. I hope Vox rides this sucker till it collapses in an exhausted heap. It rather reminds me of a game a friend of mine used to drag me into playing. While it was a strategy game I found rather boring and tedious. I did find great amusement in screwing with my friend and tormenting him. He would always plan things moves ahead and out of nowhere I would make some random move that made no sense. He'd go nuts. Just like the rabbit people he couldn't conceive that I wasn't playing the game with him. The game was him and I found it tremendously satisfying pulling his strings. There were interesting lessons learned in playing that game.

Come now! Try harder! This is very disappointing. Having made the effort to come all the way over here, I was at least expecting one of you gallant lads to threaten me with weasel packs or a homemade nuke or something.

All right, then. Lizzy, did your husband know about your partner?

Blogger Res Ipsa February 02, 2013 4:04 PM

@ bob k. mando,

I love sci-fi and fantasy fiction. I just don’t see a professional “group” being a great source of entertaining books. Especially since this “group” acts more like a bunch of navel gazing twits at 12 step meeting than a cohort stimulating ideas and improving an industry. I could be wrong, after all I’m not a writer or a member of the club, but what I’ve seen from these threads, I’d never hang around with these clowns if I was.

Thank you - seriously. I think this is offered in a generous spirit and shall take it accordingly. I'm pretty much welded to the path that I'm on, but I do know a lot of Christians (if you check out my Facebook, they include the local vicar) and they are good people.

I just asked my partner (male). He asks for clarification: do you mean himself (my current partner, of 9 years)? I was with my late partner (also male) for 15 years, and yes, just to spell this out, T is obviously aware that I was a widow. T asks what he is supposed to know or not know? Would appreciate greater clarity.

Anonymous Kickass February 02, 2013 4:12 PM

Hey Witch, the path you are on leads straight to hell and the Christians who have been sent your way with the Truth are going to be a testimony against you on judgement day. Repent and call on Jesus the Christ to save your soul with the blood atonement He has already paid against the enslavement you think there is no way out of. There is no way out by your own hand, only through the way made by the Creator God. Call on His name. It will save you.

Relax, Lizzy. This is a journey. You have to have learn to have faith. To trust. So, what I hear you saying is that your being widowed was not a recent event. Is that correct? And were you a witch at the time, or did you turn to the dark side after his death?

2002. And always been one. I do have faith - just in other gods. I'm not up for conversion. However, I would note that this has been a refreshing discussion: most of the flak I usually get is from militant atheists, who I really do find tedious. I can respect people of faith, and moderate atheism.

Meanwhile, it is half nine here, and I have a few things to do, so I wish you all well, and may check in tomorrow. Good night.

@mevennen

You are more likely a mentally unstable 40 something who is on some sort of anti-depressants, has a couple of cats, and enjoys frolicking in the woods semi-clothed at night because daddy didn't love you enough, or loved you too much. You are probably over educated, and consumed by debt (or were for a long time).

I am willing to bet you debt was so much that you couldn't afford children with your first partner, or that you got wrapped up into feminism in college and decided children were for losers. Your life is without purpose, and you probably have attempted, or have put serious thought into suicide.

If you haven't been pedaling your dark arts to children, I recommend you embrace one of the local Christian churches that hasn't proclaimed you to be a heretic; if you have been been, do everyone a favor and find yourself a millstone.

Completely and totally OT,

Have you seen the photo at Drudge, with Obummer supposedly shooting skeet?

The picture looks really weird to me.

One of you Ilk with some skillz should try drawing a line down the top of the barrel of the gun and see where it lines up on Obummer. Looks to my eye as if it would line up with the middle of his forehead.

In other words, I think the picture is a really bad fake.

Look how high the gun butt is setting in relationship to his shoulder. It just looks fake to me.

You don't even know what you came here for and what it is you want out of the angry insults and faux-challenges. Not sure what your self image is, but you come off as extremely emotional and nearly incoherent.

As I said, Vox isn't the cartoon you believe him to be. Remember which author showed up out of nowhere on another author's blog throwing insults? You wouldn't know this or believe me, but you are proving VD correct on many things. Look-- I gave you some friendly advice. Take it.

Just curious how many of the Christians in this place are reformed pagans besides myself? I took a route similar to Vox. Raised Christian, backslid like hell, and in that it was the evil I experienced and saw in myself that convinced me that God was real in spite of all the shallow, stupid Christians I knew.

I am hardly surprised she chose to make fun of an excerpt from the Eternal Warriors books, however there are parts of those that may have convinced her that Vox has been a little closer to her neck of the woods than she might think.

Noticed that. Looks like a stage gun my father used to have. Looked like a 38, but the barrel was blocked and had a port on the top to vent the gas from the blanks.

It was pretty funny when dear old dad handed it to somebody with tear-gas caps in it.

Or when he left it in the glove compartment when I borrowed the car and it fell out right in front of a cop.

You are truly asleep at the helm, Ilk. Why, there once was a time when I could step out for but a moment and find that, in my absence, some hapless heathen had shown up at your drawbridge demanding that you produce your damsels and most of your wealth and been summarily entombed in molten lead for his troubles.

Today, however, I spend most of my day acquiring something in gold, tasteful yet suitable for a world-conquering overlord, and return to find that you have had as much effect on an aging harridan as if you had lashed her with feather-dusters.

Must I do everything?

Anonymous Jack Amok February 02, 2013 4:59 PM

VP has become quite the scum magnet.

Sure, Vox is running for office. That makes him a politician (of sorts), and scum cannot stay away from politicians (even thoroughly unconventional ones).

It does make me wonder about the membership of the SFWA though. Ms Martindale's website is basically indistinquishable from a website someone would create as a parody of a female fantasy writer's website. Poet, songsmith, teller of tales? Warrior? And a page dedicated to her cat?

Honestly, I am trying very hard to be less cynical in my life, but this is so stereotypical, it's hard not to just shake my head and sigh. And then there's Scalzi and Hines crossdressing to make fun of something they don't even understand. And not even doing a particularly good job of it (I mean, if you're going to take a picture of yourself holding a cyborg's head, at least do a paper mache version, don't hold up a perfectly recognizable piece of electronics).

They all strike me as terribly unaware people. How did anyone think they would make for a good leadership?

Hanging out here is getting even more amusing...

I used to know Lee, her husband, and her ex-husband. Twenty year ago or so she was really active in the fat acceptance movement and ran regular events at the local Mensa group.

I read the first anthology she edited and had a story in "Such a Beautiful Face". It wasn't very good and her story was, frankly, not really well enough written to have been published. It's unfortunate that that's what qualified her to join SFWA.

Since then she has become an over entitled, obnoxious person to deal with and only seems to be happy lording over others. She really likes playing the elitist.

Last time I saw her, she had been using a power chair for years (and that was a long time ago). She talks big about the "warrior" thing, but it's all talk.

As far as threats, as we say here in Texas "All hat, no cattle". She's just being a drama queen. Again.

I also just saw the latest post from the current SFWA president on his blog offering to donate to charity every time his name is mentioned in these circles, so I shall refer to him only by his position (snicker, snicker, assume the position...)

I'm glad I started following this blog.

Anonymous Stilicho February 02, 2013 5:18 PM

Quite amusing. I don't think that even the resident agents have ever trolled so hard for a threat. And the vague threats via anecdotes of what happened to the last person to displease her walrusness were quite endearing. Although I must note that the last time a larded troll came here threatening psychic vengeance, there was a lightening strike near the Ilk she threatened.

The funny part is the fact that the gun control nuts actually think that this photo will give them an effective weapon in their power grab. Not only will no actual supporter of the 2nd Amendment be swayed by such a clumsy, inept piece of propaganda, but neither will it give the gun control weirdos what they hope will be a way of taking away the arguments of the normal Americans who oppose them (e.g. Obama once fired a shotgun, how can you claim he is against guns/hunting/responsibility/2nd Amend. etc.?).

It is encouraging to see such stupidity on display from the enemies of liberty.

I have yet to attempt anything with Zimbabwe, foolish mortal. Not only is it not significant, it is also toward the bottom of the alphabetised list Signe was so kind as to provide.

And why, you ask? Well, can I be worse than what you pay to endure now?

Oh snap.

And that's despite humanists promising that as soon as they pushed those pesky Christians out of academia, they'd usher in a new era of science-based reason. If there wasn't so much at stake, this near-perfect record of humanists getting precisely the opposite of what they intended would be hilarious. It still is, kinda.

Now all we have to do is get Whoopie Goldberg, Joy Behar, Anderson Cooper and Ellen DeGeneres pissed off about the whole thing and this may go down as one of the greatest marketing strategies ever devised.

Anonymous Vidad February 02, 2013 9:28 PM

One thing that's hilarious: they're all falling over each other trying to figure out the new rules King Rabbit is devising for his fundraiser.

RABBIT #1: Does it count if one of his icky friends mentions you?
RABBIT #2: Do we count his other blog, too?
RABBIT #3: If it's more than once a day is that a double donation?
RABBIT #4: We don't have to read that place do we? I need a shower! Here's $100!

Can you imagine if Vox proposed something like this? The responses would be more like:

NATE: /facepalm
CLAY: I already donated to a pair of Ukrainian blondes. Twice.
JOSH: Vox has accidentally poured last night's cocktail into his cornflakes.
LOKI OF ASGARD: I will graciously allow you to donate to my pile of grinning skulls as soon as your head is free.
GIRAFFE: Hey... check it out. I already got banned on the Make a Wish Foundation Blog: [link]

I've noted before that Greenland froze over when we started to burn witches.

If you want to SWAT at the gnatstys, you could use skype from a cafe and call into the police phone number local to the threat, impersonating the threat and saying something like you've just killed your family, are going to blow up a school, etc. and watch the militarized blue-coats go after them.

The frightening thing is the presence of armed rabbits who won't learn.

The skeet shooting pic looks fake to me too. His body's outline is sharply defined, but the shotgun looks slightly blurry. It's as if at the moment the pic was taken the shotgun was moving and his body was perfectly still.

But hey I don't know anything about photography. I just find it hilarious! The gov not only makes the huge blunder of releasing a photo of the pro-gun control President with a shotgun now, but adds inept photo manipulation on top of that? AND THEN to cover it up releases a statement asking everyone nicely not to mess with the photo?

Are these guys now working for the Republican party or what?

OpenID mevennen February 03, 2013 5:31 AM

It seems a little unsporting to post a lot when you're all asleep, so I'll confine my comments to the most professional of the posts.

(Just for the record, I'm not psychic. I have all the psychic ability of a house brick. Witchcraft sometimes involves people claiming psychic powers and I am usually somewhat suspicious of people who claim this, in fact).

So:

>You are more likely a mentally unstable 40 something who is on some sort of anti-depressants, has a couple of cats, and enjoys frolicking in the woods semi-clothed at night because daddy didn't love you enough, or loved you too much. You are probably >over educated, and consumed by debt (or were for a long time).

Are you psychic? (I'm kidding). You can find my age from Google: after 15+ novels in the US and UK, I'm reasonably well known as a SF writer. We have 2 cats and 2 Rottweilers. As for semi-clothed, you have got to be kidding. This is Britain. De rigeur attire for witches is a Barbour jacket, wellington boots and a thermal vest, plus the usual complement of sweaters, jeans, etc.

I have a doctorate from Cambridge in the philosophy of science so am almost certainly over-educated. Uppity women, you see. You can't keep them out of anywhere these days. I'm no more debt riddled by anyone else in this country. My dad is now 90, thankfully still with us, and an excellent man who fought for his country in the Mediterranean theatre and Monte Cassino. I'm on good terms with my family, who are a great bunch of people. I am monogamous, and happily with my second partner after being widowed: I have been very lucky in relationships. I don't have kids: never wanted them and never regretted it, either. Currently living in a large house in a very lovely part of the countryside, working out where to go next with the writing, teaching at the local adult ed college and running a business.

The suicide comment is hilarious, as is the 'without purpose' remark. No, never considered it. Sorry.

But thank you for taking so much trouble over your analysis of my personality!

>If you haven't been pedaling your dark arts to children, I recommend you embrace one of the local Christian churches that hasn't proclaimed you to be a heretic; if you have been been, >do everyone a favor and find yourself a millstone.

Ooh, flash of petulance there! You seem quite sour. I'd suggest a nice walk in the sunshine today, and some fresh air. You'll feel much better.

However, with regard to myself (the comments about Lee, who is not here to defend herself, are another matter), you've all been relatively lovely by the admittedly low standards of the internet and I congratulate Mr Day on maintaining a reasonable level of discourse. No death threats that I've noticed, no rape threats towards me - I'm impressed. It's been much nicer than the comments thread on the Guardian and since I came over here with the express intention of making a nuisance of myself, I think you've been quite restrained.

Now. As you'll have noticed, it's the Superbowl tonight. I have no interest in football, but my partner is a long term fan despite being a Brit, and because he is working today, I have promised to do the cooking and I also have to make some marmalade, which is a lengthy process. So, on with it! I shall pop in and out over the next few days - it's a busy week, villains to hex, crops to blight - but you can always email me if you have anything offensive that you think of later. This has been highly entertaining. Thank you all.

Man, other people have said it, but it bears repeating: that squirm of saying "tell my friends to start a bail fund" really meant that she'd have to shoot someone in self defense was completely transparent bull, and the fact that someone could think that counts as an acceptable lie says something about their intelligence, writing skill or both.

If the shoe were on the other foot, people would be screaming bloody murder over this. Hypocrites.

Anonymous Signe February 03, 2013 1:54 PM

Mevennen, there is a truth of life you have failed to learn: No matter what your credentials, your successes, or your minor virtues, you are still wrong when you are wrong.

Furthermore, your friends are wrong when they are wrong, regardless of how much you like them or dislike their victims. Ms. Martindale is wrong.

This is why nobody takes pagans seriously, Mevennen: because you talk a big game about "an it harm none", but as soon as you get upset with someone for any reason or no reason, you go in swinging and don't care who you hit with your flailing arms. I've dealt with your type before, and I have never once seen any of them react differently from what you're doing now: butting into someone else's dispute and acting like a crazy person.

Well, that and because neopagan guys tend to be gammas, but mostly because of the wide streak of crazy you're showing us right now.

Oh, and I think you'd be surprised how many people here have doctorates. It does not impress. Just FYI.

Anonymous LL February 03, 2013 4:58 PM

@Mike LaRoche

This Mev woman seems to be of the same character as Morgan of the Lake. "I shall trot out my indifference to all these brazen doubters of my inner wiccan earth goddess by replying to a bunch of strangers online about my status, education, coterie of pets and partners as if they care!! So take that, you fools!"

Ummmm, don't care? Anyone else amused by the fact that her doctorate is not in science but in the philosophy of science? So she probably really understands Vox's arguments about how science and theory are as unreliable and fleeting as the next study published. It's always great to invest years of time, energy, and money studying the history and philosophy of something that crumbles with the eureka moments of the next group of scientists.

Anonymous Stickwick February 03, 2013 5:03 PM

Ummmm, don't care? Anyone else amused by the fact that her doctorate is not in science but in the philosophy of science?

A PhD in science is literally a Doctor of Philosophy in science. Presumably that's what she meant. Unless in England philosophy of science is an altogether different subject.

Stickwick, apparently, from what I can glean, there is a doctorate in philosophy of science at a few universities. Here in the US, it's to set you up to teach. Which is hilarious in its own right. A lot of history of science studies. I wonder if they focus on the errors as Vox does, or blithely go about pushing how perfect and unassailable science can be.

Anonymous Stickwick February 03, 2013 5:50 PM

A lot of history of science studies. I wonder if they focus on the errors as Vox does, or blithely go about pushing how perfect and unassailable science can be.

A person who studies the history of science cannot possibly be blind to its imperfection, unless it is willfully so. As a person with a PhD in actual science (not history or philosophy of), I was never drilled in the perfection, and unassailable nature, of science. If our previous study taught us nothing in this regard, we learned just how imperfect it is the moment we started doing our own research. My opinion is that people who tend to worship science either don't have much experience with it or, if they do, they deliberately misrepresent it to the public.

Anonymous LL February 03, 2013 6:08 PM

Stickwick, do you not see the irony of her both touting her PhD in philosophy of science and the fact that she's a wiccan?

And yes, those who worship science as some sort of infallible truth choose to ignore reality.

Anonymous Stickwick February 03, 2013 6:39 PM

@ LL: Inasmuch as Wiccans believe they can manipulate the physical world through magic? Yeah, the irony factor is quite high.

Anonymous LL February 03, 2013 8:51 PM
