Don't look at me
I received this in my email today:
Urgent Notice: DDoS AttackThis event prompted an amount of speculation that the DDoS attack might possibly be related to certain differences of opinion between the current and future presidents of the SFWA. As it happens, I had nothing whatsoever to do with it, (I was not even aware of it until after it had already been resolved), and neither did the Dread Ilk. The reason, of course, is that it is the easiest thing in the world to determine if the Dread Ilk were involved in something within 24 hours of an event taking place.
Dear Members,
SFWA.org has been experiencing a DDoS attack since approximately 10am EST this morning. Our webstaff has been working to restore the site. Please be patient while they continue their efforts. Members may have difficulty accessing the main sfwa.org site and the content within. The forums at sfwa.org/forum are also experiencing intermittent outages as well.
- Were firearms involved?
- Was the caliber larger than 9mm?
- Is the body count in excess of 20?
- Are the fires still burning?

Divine justice?
2. Was the caliber larger than 9mm?
Normally true, but .22 long rifle is all you need for rabbits.
FOR TRAYVON!!!
Distributed Denial. Sounds like rabbits, not Dread Ilk.
Noting the title, they won't look at you, at least not in the eye.
More than likely, it was a rabbit stampede. The carnage appears to be limited to mild confusion.
Ah, okay. Maybe I AM at the right place. I might not be active currently. But it's in there.
As for a site attack? Yeah, well, maybe a worthy target. But SFWA.org doesn't... really... qualify. As I've told women who asked me if I thought I was special or something... [woman...] you truly flatter... yourself.
Proof of Providence.
5 potential thread winners right off the bat.
I love this place.
Out of curiosity, how many simultaneous visits to the site does it take for a DDoS at SFWA? Four?
"Ahh! We're under attack! It must be that lamp we're selling on Craigslist!"
So this couldn't possibly be due to hoppy-boy calling in news media around the world making people want to go see what it was all about?
undoubtly a self inflicted, false flag attack. hop hop hop
And I was just getting ready to post a provocative "Moar Rabbit" on the previous conversation thread.
Sincerely
cheddarman
possibly be related to certain differences of opinion between the current and future presidents of the SFWA.
I admire your confidence, but don't think you'll win.
A DDoS attack on... SFWA.org?
Why would anyone want to do that?
Why would they even bother?
The only explanation I can think of is that the Lagomorphs, being too frightened to enter the Lion's Den, have convinced themselves that this will somehow get back at you, Vox.
Well, it's not as self-defeating as Gamma Bunny, I guess.
I admire your confidence, but don't think you'll win.
You aren't thinking this through, Giraffe. It is a numbers game. There are 2000 members of the SFWA. Scalzi won last time with 200 votes or something. That means that voter turnout (for the winner, at least) at a member organization is 10%.
That means one thing: total apathy and a miniscule "in-crowd" looting the cupboards. Vox simply has to appeal to 200 disaffected members who haven't had the motivation to let a once-proud organization go.
200. Also, I know Vox threw his hat in the ring to play around, but have you noticed something? When Vox plays a game, he likes to win.
I'm going to guess it is a hell of a lot more uncertain than it would first appear.
On another topic (still related to OP) C-4 is not a firearm.
I don't really think it was an attack.
I got called the first day of CES because xi3.com was being attacked. Turns out that Valve made an announcement the day before and we were getting 300 hits per second from people trying to see what it was about. Took three days for the ISP to get in and increase our bandwidth so it would work again.
I think hoppy-boy generated enough traffic to lock people out. He should have to pay for it.
It was probably folks going to the wrong site to pre-order their Gamma Rabbit t-shirts.
Giraffe: "I admire your confidence, but don't think you'll win."
Come on... folks said the same thing about Ron Paul.
Out of curiosity, how many simultaneous visits to the site does it take for a DDoS at SFWA? Four?
Exactly! Just simple server overload due to McRapey's public Leporidae Liberalis antics.
Since we are discussing rabbit hunting.
If you want to save the meat, a .22 LR is the way to go. Head shots don't spoil any meat and often result in some entertaining acrobatics due to an interrupted nervous system.
If you are out for destruction, I recommend .22-250. These fast movers will leave a baseball sized hole and instant kills.
If you are looking for the red mist with critters this big, go with something like a .243, .25-06, or so. This is a whole 'nother level of destruction. With my 7mm and 110 grain hollow points you get pretty good hang time and guts high in the shrubbery.
Giraffe-I admire your confidence, but don't think you'll win.
Daniel-Also, I know Vox threw his hat in the ring to play around, but have you noticed something? When Vox plays a game, he likes to win.
I'm going to guess it is a hell of a lot more uncertain than it would first appear.
My strategy is to wait for Vox to make a prediction, then bet on the other guy.
I'm sure it was a veritable flood of those wanting to pledge money to anti-racisssexisshomophobedipshit causes that crashed the site. The total has got to be pushing what, three, four hundred trillion dollars by now? They sure did show you Vox.
DDoS likely due to Thumper hitting the "Enter" key.
Normally true, but .22 long rifle is all you need for rabbits.
Early win.
Does a Glock 32 in .357 SIG still count as a 9mm?
@AlteredFate and @daddynichol and Et Ilk,
It's not dollars but stuffing the voting box ... just a little mis-direction being employed.
Its thumping something because I think the creature/caricature is properly called a Rappit.
Correct me if you must, but I don't think it should be confused with a furry gentle & innocent animal that inhabits many parts of our planet.
I suspect that it is more akin to a shiny enticement or brightly colored candy shown through the open door of an invitation into the dark interior of a van or car.
Consequently, I think it is called a Rappit and it is neither gentle or innocent.
And whatever it thumps with isn't likely to be a foot.
Why on Earth would any of us want to shut down SFWA.org?
And end all the fun we're having? Never!
OMG!!!
SCARY GUN TALK!!!!
Ha! The next time somebody asks if I did something naughty I will remember this. "Are the fires still burning? No? Wasn't me, then."
I could not figure out how to make myself un-anonymous on the heading, sorry, but Tom Cruise is the Last Samurai and I am the Next to Last Samurai.
"Does a Glock 32 in .357 SIG still count as a 9mm?"
No.
.357 sig... .357 mag... all of these are appropriate man killers.
I favor 10mm myself.
Next to Last Samurai,
Under the comment block there is a little box that says "Select profile". Click on this, then select the "Name/URL" option. You can then enter your name and leave the "URL" box blank.
Google Trends for SFWA. It is so simple, it is science.
Google Trends for Vox Day and John Scalzi. A big win all around, if "any press is good press."
This is the same thing that happened when SCO made the mistake of suing IBM and saying Linux was unconstitutional. Millions of people worldwide hit SCO's website to see what all the fuss was about. SCO claimed they were being hit with a DDOS attack, which they blamed on the nebulous "Linux community". Naturally, most of the media uncritically regurgigatated these claims despite not a single shred of proof being offered in their support.
Anyone here shot the Mossberg 464 tactical? Saw it in the store the other day and it looked like something out of a steam punk comic, but the idea of a lightweight .308 lever action for some reason appeals to me.
It's a decent price, but the owner said he hasnt had much luck moving them, which gave me pause.
Thoughts?
@Huckleberry
Looks pretty interesting. 30-30 though not .308. Don't know how hard that caliber is to come across these days. They should have done a true quad-rail on the thing and free-floated the barrel and tube. Would be better cut down and sold as a pistol.
VD: Was the caliber larger than 9mm?
Please change to >= 9mm. While smugly suffering the giggles of the more opinionated, plenty of the ilk are satisfied with the 9mm and consider larger calibers merely showing off when it comes to sound, and an admission of a lack of restraint when it comes to anything else.
What about a 40 caliber handgun?
I have a 40 cal Beretta 96. I don't like the polymer frame guns, they are too light IMO. As i chemist (of sorts), i doubt they will have the potential heirloom quality of a metal framed gun
What say the dread ilk? (I will hang my head in shame if Nate says it is a girl caliber)
罗臻: A big win all around, if "any press is good press."
It's a pro wrestling thing. Who wins or loses the match is not as important as who sells the most T-shirts while it's going on.
Things have been heating up with Scalzi and commentators over at Whatever.
Pattern-based predictions? That'll never work. You should use polling data.
@kh123
It appears we underestimated the speed with which the hutch dwellers could organize. They've already produced a TV show? We're screwed.
I like the 9mm. In +P it hits about as hard as a .38 Special, but my Glock 19 carries three times the rounds of my J-Frame Smith in a similar size and weight. The Smith is classier though, and will probably be an heirloom.
Great list though - awesome post.
@Chedderman, I like .40, just got another one. I believe Vox prefers .40 also.
9mm is OK with hollowpoints. .22LR is not to be despised, either.
Besides, I'm sure some of the Ilk would prefer to use edged weapons. Clean the rabbit for the pot.
.40 is a bona fide man killer. This is not in question.
As for El Borak's nonsense... he's humiliating himself.
Thank you, Krul!
My caliber goes up to 11.
"'9mm is OK with hollowpoints. "
No. It isn't.
There is a reason the US army went to the .45acp.
The rabbits have hired script kiddies, its a false flag!
i got another CZ this past weekend, a CZ P-06. Sexy thing it is.
Nate:As for El Borak's nonsense... he's humiliating himself.
QED. There are those who can kill with a fountain pen or a set of tweezers, for whom self-defense is a matter of art as much as force. Then there are those who need arsenic, C4, or nukes to get the same simple job done. Humiliation is in the mind of the survivor, I suppose. Which is why it neither concerns nor affects me in the least. But I am honored that Nate mentioned me by name. Check off a bucket list item that seemed impossible not so long ago.
My wife just turned 72(don't tell anybody) and her grip is definately not what it used to be. She won't touch my .357, has trouble now with the small grip on her snub-nosed .38, and can no longer rack the 9mm.
So, I got her a little Walthers P22, 10 round clip. It's easy for her to rack, has a safety(which she really likes.)This has become her favorite CC gun, small, light, easy for her to shoot. Bonus is we already have thousands of .22LR around the place for her to plink with, and the ammo is dirt cheap.
Not much of a weapon to stop somebody hopped up on something, but just pulling out a weapon changes the dymanics of almost any situation.
Loaded up with .22 hollow points will let it do some notable damage.
Google Trends for SFWA. It is so simple, it is science.
So what made 2004 such a special year for the SFWA?
A DDoS attack means some service was denied....not sure what kind of service the SFWA site provides..but it must be uber-important...better alert Salon and The Guardian.
A DDoS attack means some service was denied....not sure what kind of service the SFWA site provides
Virginity.
"i got another CZ this past weekend, a CZ P-06. Sexy thing it is."
mad thumbs up. CZ is one of the most under appreciated companies there is.... at least in America.
The standing order for the Dread Ilk is, "Keep shooting until the target changes shape or catches fire."
Both Vox and Scalzi are getting all the benefits of a publicity stunt for free.
I don't see this ending anytime soon.
Also, Google trends says that the city that most reads this blog is Atlanta. Weird.
I don't know wtf it is with you guys and 9mm, but it reads like a circle-jerk. Caliber arguments are for pussies.
I LOL'd. As for the larger than 9mm comment- I see what Vox did there.
Also, Google trends says that the city that most reads this blog is Atlanta. Weird.
That's not weird at all. Anyone who has been to Atlanta, even just passing through the airport, is yearning for access to guns and real talk on race.
@Giraffe -
Normally true, but .22 long rifle is all you need for rabbits.
Exactly what I was thinkin.
I am the Next to Last Samurai.
stated more properly, you are the Penultimate Samurai.

or until it changes shape AND catches fire.

who needs 9 mill when you've got a Dillon?
"Failure bad, gun GOOD!"
(Oops, reply fail earlier in the thread. I was trying to quote Krul. See kids, this is what it looks like if you try to be a smartass when you aren't very smart.)
So murdering non-combatants with missiles fired from drones is OK, but waterboarding is a terrible, barbarous act. Anyone else starting to find all this a bit confusing?
So murdering non-combatants with missiles fired from drones is OK, but waterboarding is a terrible, barbarous act. Anyone else starting to find all this a bit confusing?
They are not non-combatants, they are suspected terrorists.
And it is not waterboarding, it is upright swimming.
The 179 + children US drones have killed were going to live a horrible life anyways, Uncle Sam just gave them post natal abortions, he is so very fond if those.
Wow. Never saw such a pathetic bunch.
Wow. Never saw such a pathetic bunch.
...Of bananas? Riemannian manifolds?
Anonymous, is that you again?
You really, really, need to get out more. And not just to the comic book store.
You were probably adopted then Anon.
DDos attack? Never been to the site, and wouldn't know how to do something I don't even understand how it works. But I'll take credit if you want me to, unless it is illegal.
DDoS would be the equivalent of an umbrella drink, attack-wise. It can be done, but you must be unflinchingly alpha to be able to get away with it.
Bob, my wife is 37 and she wants a Walther P22 also. I wouldn't mind having one myself. It's a good pistol.
Then again, you got to pick a real target.
Back to this episode. Next, Scalzi will be sending out fundraising emails with alarmist warnings of an incursion of right-wing nutjob terrorists, and only their $1, $2, $10, $25, $100, name your amount donation can make a difference.
Every anonymous drive-by from Scalzi's place leads with the same shaming language. Projection, I know, but where's the creativity? Where's the sense of good-natured fun? Or bad-natured fun, even?
Where did all the good trolls go? Where's Tad declaring that VD must really have launched the DoS and that this backtracking is humiliating? Where's King A spending weaving 20,000-word tales of his legendary credentials?
Suspicious
Suspicious
Yeah A site that many of have never even visited and a DDos attack what ever that is is suspicious. But Sandy Hook with no security video and the batman shooting and 9/11 was not suspicious. You are a complete fucking idiot. Let me tell you how stupid you are, you are blinded by your politics and your agenda. Both which are hate of life. You are for Abortion and China's one child policy. and love running over 3 month olds for Chinese not paying their fine. Probably drink pepsi too.
Vox was right, you dumb asses over stepped your bounds. You ain't getting the guns and if you try even to get behind those who want to kill us and blame us falsely about this kind of bullshit, know that is all you have, we will not go gently into that goodnight and your lies will sink you not us. You picked the wrong damn side. No one here gives enough a damn to do a an attack on on the SWFA or SFWA or ASSWIPE site. We just don't give a damn.
"In contemporary urban guerrilla warfare, at least in Western Europe, killing civvies is counterproductive. What you want to do, what the IRA had mastered by the 1990s, was messing with the incredibly fragile and expensive networks that keep a huge city going. Interrupt them and you cost the enemy billions of dollars, and they don’t even have any gory corpses to shake in your faces."
Nerf wins—low-casualty, high-cost performance-art style guerrilla bombings. Dissent is a homemade thermite molotov with sparkler fuse.
I work for a software development company that offers web-hosting packages to sweeten the deal + pay for odds and ends. I can tell you from experience that this could possibly also be due to a bean-counter deciding that the cheapest hosting package is the best one.
Also, common sense dictates that when you are mentioned in a couple of well-known online news portals, you may expect a spike in traffic.
Probably drink pepsi too.
And pig out on donuts.
What about a 40 caliber handgun?

.40 isn't bad. If you aren't happy with the Beretta, get a Browning Hi-power .40 cal. Every man should own at least one weapon designed by John Moses Browning.
Next, Scalzi will be sending out fundraising emails with alarmist warnings of an incursion of right-wing nutjob terrorists, and only their $1, $2, $10, $25, $100, name your amount donation can make a difference.
I don't think he's allowed to do that. Obama, Pelosi, et al. have copyrighted that fundraising approach.
"No one here gives enough a damn to do a an attack on on the SWFA..." -Outlaw X
Science Writers Fiction Association...lol. I believe that is the group who writes and peer reviews the studies on global warming and the safety of children's immunizations.
Most web servers have more than one website hosted on them. Assuming it's a genuine DDOS attack it might not even be directed at the SFWA site.
Krul
Problem is that Vox is saying he won't win.
Caliber wars again.
The bigger, more powerful round doesn't do much good if it doesn't hit anything. For all the talk you hear of shooting one inch groups and such, my own experience at the range is that most people there are lucky just to hit anything. I generally shoot a bull barrel Ruger MkIII 22/45 offhand at 25 yards. I'm no great marksman, and my eyes aren't what they used to be, but I can usually get about nine of the ten rounds in a eight inch circle.
While my son is shooting, sometimes I will walk behind the other booths to see how they're doing, and it is appalling At seven yards, most of these folks seem to have trouble just hitting the target at all, and the bigger the round, seemingly the worse the results. These aren't old ladies, or accountants with their first firearm, but by and large, pickup truck good old boys.
For all the talk of "stopping power", I doubt if anyone here would be willing to catch ten rapid fired rounds of .22LR.
> Caliber wars again.
Yeah. I disagree with Nate on this. If someone can't handle a larger gun and wants a .22, well that's better than no gun.
Obviously, bigger is better, but in some cases that's not an option.
@Outlaw
you are blinded by your politics and your agenda. Both which are hate of life. You are for Abortion and China's one child policy. and love running over 3 month olds for Chinese not paying their fine. Probably drink pepsi too.
Hate of life? Agenda? Let me be clear here, Outlaw. My agenda and life converge in very specific ways: Improve my handicap, see as much as possible of the world, support my family, find a new housekeeper, bring joy to my family, friends and partner, and continue to re-adjust my portfolio.
Pepsi: Too Sweet.
Tab? Or perhaps Fresca?
Tad, what is your opinion on 9mm vs 45?
Perhaps the culprit has made a public "satirical" statement...
"Hi! I’m a DDoS attacker. I’m one of those men who likes to force myself on SFWA without their consent or desire and then batter them with denial of service. The details of how I do this are not particularly important at the moment..."
And pig out on donuts.
Wish I could, but being a diabetic prohibits this behavior and your shtick is old any how.
Hate of life? Agenda? Let me be clear here, Outlaw. My agenda and life converge in very specific ways: Improve my handicap,
Didn't know you were a golfer.
Caddy shack and all thee Tad.
Tad,
Why'd you have to pop up right on cue and say exactly what I'd said you'd say? You're making me look bad in front of all the rabbits who are reading the unreadable RSHD.
At least you seem to be having fun, so you're better off here rather than Scalzi's place. And for the record, I know you're a sockpuppet for somebody. Your style is too cartoonish for a real person.
Wow, all this just for Vox? This is great! What ever shall the rabbits say now, o?
Best comments ever...
"And for the record, I know you're a sockpuppet for somebody. Your style is too cartoonish for a real person."
[chuckle] You may be right. But if so, think about what he's doing to his own mind. Those who go undercover sometimes end up as one of the types they emulate. He'll start accidentally slipping PC language into discussions with his coworkers. He'll not be able to resist kneejerk antagonistic arguments with his buddies on things he used to agree with. He could get so into character that he never comes out.
The mind has it's own slippery slope. Pray that he makes it back safely.
