End of the LAPD manhunt

It looks as if Dorner has been located:
Dorner was engaged in a shootout with federal authorities in the Big Bear area Tuesday, a law enforcement source told The Times. The shooting occurred after Dorner burglarized a home, tied up a couple and stole their car, the source said.
Unless, of course, it is merely an Asian woman who was delivering a newspaper....  Apparently all that police training didn't do him much good.

He's not dead? I thought they would have obliterated him for all the trouble he put them through.

Anonymous Lulabelle February 12, 2013 4:51 PM

I expect he'll run across a rifle while in custody and ......ugh....commit suicide. Yeah, that's it.

Lots of stuff still up in the air, there's been an element of weirdness about this business from the get-go. We'll see if these reports are true.

He'll kill himself if the cops don't do it. I'd rather they capture him alive, then hang him by the neck until dead.

CNN: "Two sheriff's deputies have been wounded in a shootout with a suspect believed to be renegade ex-Los Angeles police officer Christopher Jordan Dorner, a high ranking law official with knowledge of the investigation said Tuesday."

Uh, oh...now he's a renegade. Hope he found time to make out a will while he was composing his "Manifesto".

@ TZ, Feds were involved because he exhaled and that breath contained his DNA and that DNA crossed a state line at some point.

Anonymous snowdog February 12, 2013 5:21 PM

His big mistake was getting fired BEFORE he went on the rampage. Otherwise he'd be on "paid administrative leave" while the police "conduct an investigation" until the news networks get bored and drop it. Silly renegade.

Anonymous Leatherwing February 12, 2013 5:24 PM

Pretty sure the Federal Authorities involved are National Park Service. Radio reporter said the police fired at his vehicle, so at least they're consistent in that regard.

No, we'll see which parts are certainly false by contradiction, but we'll never know which parts are true.

I heard it was California Fish and Game, not the Park Service.

Anonymous Brian February 12, 2013 5:32 PM

Since the cops apparently don't have to justify any of their actions to the public, couldn't they start shooting people at random claiming it's "Dorner", and just offer a half-hearted "oops!" if it turns out it's not him? Not that the LAPD has anything to lose, the people already know they're incompetent. Seems like a good opportunity to get rid of other enemies of the state if you ask me, let's see if they use it or waste it.

Anonymous Salt February 12, 2013 5:37 PM

Pretty lame all around.

Why burn your truck and attract police attention if you are just going to hole up in the area then get tear gassed and swarmed by 100 cops.

If he got out of the area and hid somewhere for a month he could have cost the department a lot of money.

Anonymous Daniel February 12, 2013 6:21 PM

Well, Dorner was right. 100 cops on 1 guy: that's definitely asymmetrical.

Anonymous cheddarman February 12, 2013 6:22 PM

According to Fox, the FBI restricted the Airspace above the cabin which means there are no non-law enforcement eyes on the target. They will never allow him to be captured. They have to execute him as a message to other miscreants that may try to copycat his approach. Goodbye Mr Dorner. I recommend a conversation with The Lord Jesus Christ before you are ushered into Eternity.

Nope. Not if he was a paratrooper or something. If he was just winging it, yeah, he probably died. But if I recall, his jump height was nothing spectacular. He knew how to put the parachute on, and had picked a military one that probably afforded him higher survivability, though less steering.

And yeah, a boy scout or something found 6 grand of the money in the dirt many years later.

I watched the SLA burn. Reporters on the scene all said that it was well known that CS canisters start fires.

When Philadelphia burned out MOVE the people who made that decision said they were shocked that CS bombs would start fires and kill everyone.

BATF said that it was not their tear gas canisters that burned out the Waco Davidians but that the Davidians started the fires themselves.

Will there be a stand-off? I've got EP's old notes:

""How to do a proper standoff"

Rules
1) Don't shoot yourself, shoot them
2) Tell them if they bring you a pack smokes you'll come out.
3) When they bring the smokes shoot them
4) wound a few, when they ask for a cease fire to gather wounded, agree.
5) shoot them as they gather wounded.
6) Wait and see if they will fall for it again.
7) tell them you got a bomb after you spot the sniper and if it blows they are all dead.
when they back away far enough, shoot the sniper (oh the Irony)
9) Tell them you don't want to hurt anyone else, you are sick of the killing
10) wait to see if they fall for it.

OK the rest is proprietary, you'll have to pay like everybody else.

Anonymous Huckleberry - est. 1977 February 12, 2013 9:55 PM

Had Dorner resisted the adolescent urge to be seen and heard with his drama queen manifesto, the LAPD would have no idea who to misidentify in their blind, panicked shootings. He actually could have carried out most/all of his intent.
But again, reality proves that 99.999 percent of police work is waiting for a phone call to tell you where to go. The other .0009 percent is, apparently, skipping out on range time.
Couldn't hit the side of a barn, the lot of them.
Also, one nagging thing. I haven't delved too much into Dorner's story, but I keep hearing he was Navy/Navy reservist - presumably not SEAL - and yet the couple of military photos I've seen look like he's wearing Army BDUs/Desert fatigues.
Are there other infantry/combat units in the Navy other than SEALS that don't call themselves "Marines"?

Yes, FMF (Fleet Marine Force) corpsmen. The Seabees, or CB's (Construction Battalion) are like Army Corps of Engineers.

I just looked up some more pictures of him. He got a certificate for completing anti-terrorism training from a Navy command. Hard to tell, but Seabees have to have some security while working, maybe he was a commander of a security forces detachment. His uniform has lieutenant bars on both collars; that means he was originally Surface Warfare. They don't have any specialized insignia, they are line officers. Medical officers (what Dorner would have to be if he was Medical Corps) have an insignia on one collar that is not a rank insignia.

Yes Greencarman, the brave men, women, and trans of the multiple California law enforcement agencies involved in this incomprehensibly difficult operation prevailed against superior manpower, training, and firepower. But with the help of their faith in the almighty State, they were able to emerge triumphant. No words of mine could ever adequately express my true gratitude toward these truly dedicated professionals.

OK, there we go, for some reason my username in blogspot was 'Unknown' go figure.

If he'd been caught alive we'd know for sure as soon as he got locked up.

So have they got him or not?

Doom:"I do hope this is a learning moment for gun-grabbers. That was one guy, think about 10,000 in a city that size, or more? I doubt it, they don't seem all that bright."

As dumb as they are, I think they understand the damage one or two determined individuals with guns can do. That's why they prefer to continue piling law upon law on gun ownership,.. buying up ammo in order to jack up the prices and traumatizing shool kids for shaping fingers into guns.
They're content with sticking to the formula that brought them success on so many other leftist issues. Pick any one and you'll see how they use law, economics and the brainwashing of malleable young minds to further that particular cause.

The new Waco. Now now in black.

And further, Dorner told the police who he was and what he intended. He was aiming to kill certain people so the police had a clue as to where he might turn up. WTF would gun grabbers/cops/FBI do if some unknown person started taking out random cops/city officials? How long before panic sets in?

Blogger LP 999/Eliza February 13, 2013 7:08 AM

Nah, he escaped to Mexico or something or is well and alive and waiting to take out more people. These easy outcomes might not be true.

"The new Waco. Now now in black."

If I remember correctly, quite a few members of Koresh's group were black, including some of the children. The media played this down, though, focusing instead on the creepy-looking leader and portraying him as a Manson/Jim Jones type.

That is very disturbing that they burned the cabin deliberately. Drudge had some stuff from the police scanner. The cops were very happy to burn that cabin down.

All the updates I have seen says they found a body but cannot ID at this time. What are the odds that he managed to escape and the body they may have found is of a hostage who happened to be in the cabin? As sad as that is, I am kinda hoping its true.

My dad and I were talking about it this morning, and one of the things Dorner purchased before his spree was a set of scuba gear, although he is not SCUBA certified. His and my best guess was that the fire was planned or accounted for by him and he is making use of the scuba gear or had planned on making use of the gear. It will remain to be seen if the body is his or one of those he has kidnapped.

If law enforcement ceased how long before panic would set in?

The rabbits are just minutes away from panic at any point in time. I'll be just fine.
