Mailvox: the charity war

Phoenician presents a fascinatingly ironic defense of McRapey:
Your attempt to smear him is a joke, and you're a joke, you twerp - and what you don't get is now you're an even bigger joke known to many, many people who had no clue you existed.  Scalzi has pwned you. You might as well drop your pants, paint your ass red, and bend over.
So he can do what, gently massage my gluteal muscles?  Surely Phoenician doesn't mean to suggest McRapey would, you know, sexually assault someone!  It appears that Mr. Scalzi's fans share his public fascination with "cranial-rectal insertions", "assbags", and rape.  Now, perhaps I am a joke, an even bigger joke than before, and yet I can't help but notice that the Dread Ilk appear to be the only ones laughing.  Phoenician, for one, appears to be a good deal more angry than amused.

Here is the question:  If l'affaire McRapey is going so fabulously well for the Gamma Rabbit, why is it only his fans who are urging me to stop?  My readers don't appear to mind a daily update on the latest gamma antics and one would certainly hate to see the poor little gay black children shortchanged.  Does Phoenician simply hate little gay black girls?  I am absolutely committed to ensuring that they get every last penny of the $50,000$60,000 now pledged to them; I do wish there was an official counter or something to which I could link just to keep track.  In additional to the charitable imperative, I note that not only has Mr. Scalzi never once asked me to stop referring to him as McRapey, but has repeatedly professed his delight at all the attention he is receiving.

I, for one, would be devastated to see the anticipated recipients of such charitable largesse deprived of 95% of what they are expecting.  I expect that even if Mr. Scalzi no longer enjoys the attention, he would be loathe to make any request that would cause them to lose out on $57,000 in donations.  If he genuinely wished me to stop, then surely it would behoove him to simply ask me to do so rather than engage in all of these theatrics.

But what if Phoenician is correct and it is the Gamma Rabbit's approach that is proving to be the more effective?  In that case, then logic clearly dictates we must follow the man's charitable example.  Here’s what I’m going to do: From now until the end of 2013 (and backdating to January 1st), each time John "I am a rapist" Scalzi forces himself on a woman "without their consent or desire and then batter(s) them sexually", I’m going to put $5 into a pot. At the end of the year, I’m going to tally it up.  All the money, up to $1,000, will be donated to Victoria's Secret, a stripper named Sunshine, a restaurant called The Black Cat, and the Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio.

Nothing is going to stop Gamma Rabbit from doing what rabbits do.  But at least the thought of all that money going to causes the Chief Rabbit of the Whatever warren hates will enrage him to much the same extent that the idea of FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS pledged to Emily, rain, Rainbow Pride, and the Colored People infuriates me.

Jim C. Hines review of Touched by an Alien is hilarious.

Quote from book:
He grabbed my upper arms. “Prove it.”
“Prove what? Jeff, I–”
“Prove who you belong to.” His eyes flashed as he pulled me to him and kissed me.

Jim C. Hines response:
"I know that for some people, having a hot, sexy man (or woman) aggressively pursuing and dominating you can be a very attractive fantasy. But Jeff kept setting off my domestic violence warning bells."

McRapey has to harness the powers of his blog followers, major media friends, and he has to have a video made...all to counter your one simple blog. You hardly go to the effort he has gone through. Yet, he is fixated on Vox and this blog. It is a pathetic spectacle.

This demonstrates, once again, that fools cannot rest until the thoughtful people are either silenced or destroyed. Beware, Vox. This idiot could do reckless harm just to feel that he has somehow claimed supremacy.

Not to go off topic, since gamma rabbits are amazingly interesting, but here's some follow-up on the cop-killer ex-cop story.

Two little old Asian women driving a pickup and delivering papers in a residential neighbourhood were sighted, and immediately shot at, by the LAPD because the cops thought their truck looked similar to their fugitive's.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/tessastuart/two-mistakenly-shot-during-frantic-lapd-during-manhunt

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2013/02/ex-cop-manhunt-newspaper-delivery-women-shot.html

Thankfully, neither was killed but both were hospitalised. Their truck had over 40 bullet holes in it, which is an unintended testimony to the absolutely terrible shooting ability of the police officers. Good thing for the two ladies, too.

Scaldlipzi writes about being a rapist. Claims its satire.

He obviously doesn't recognize satire and instead claims otherwise when it is applied.

If Scaldlipzi doesn't recognize satire then his public claim isn't satire ... he is what he declared about himself from the start.

You know, I have only followed this very lightly, and still am not entirely clear on who Scalzi is, his relationship to Vox, and how this beef originated.

But it says a ton about how weak Scalzi's hand must be when he's marshaling so many left-wing shaming forces together to combat Vox's blog posts. It's like when two school kids dislike one another, and the response of one (Vox) is to merely make fun of the other when he (Scalzi) speaks, but the other (Scalzi) is so traumatized that he (Scalzi)he tries to get all his friends, his parents, the school counselor, and people outside of school to make fun of Vox for him, and, at the same time, stating that each and every time Scalzi gets insulted he's going to adopt a puppy in protest to show how "evil" Vox is---all whilst screaming like a girl each and every time Vox throws up another snide remark about Scalzi.

It's quite an overreaction that displays just how weak Scalzi really is.

p.s. it's the equivalent of when Keith Olbermann used to flip the fuck out anytime anyone would criticize him or point out he got a factoid wrong. He would name critics the "worst person in the world" that night if he couldn't rile up the Bush hate, and get guests to comment on how "stupid" or "evil" the criticizer was. Any personal criticism of Olbermann made you Hitler and was worthy of a five-minute harangue.

Heck, I'll bet he's scouring the internet now, desperately trying to find something to impugn my credibility with, all because I'm bringing this up.

At first, the left loved it, seeing him as a "fighter" unwilling to get "run over" by the "fascists." Pretty soon, however, even leftists and MSNBC producers tired of such weak-sauce paranoia.

Anonymous Jeigh Di February 08, 2013 9:14 AM

My only question is, does Scalzi actually intend to fork out the money? Although liberals are more than generous with others', they tend to be less enthusiastic about giving away their own. Though I can not prove it, I have no doubt that the majority of those giving to his list of non-profits will not be giving to those they would usually support.
In the meantime, the BSA Executive Board still hasn't come down off of the fence. If they decide to change their policy, it will be interesting to see how many of the churches supporting the Boy Scouts decide that pleasing men is more important than pleasing God.

p.p.s. Phoenician's reaction also reminds me of a school yard child's wild overreaction. Sometimes, they'll be two kids who dislike each other, and, finally, they'll get into a physical confrontation.

Usually, one of them (Scalzi), despite all his braggadocio, really is terrified of fighting, and doesn't have that much confidence in his ability to attack or to defend himself. This is the kid (Scalzi) who tries to get as many people as possible to attack the other kid (Vox)verbally and shut him down from speaking through shaming.

However, when confronting each other in a physical fight, a Scalzi can't hide behind shaming or bragging. So, in an end-around, he'll try to land one lucky smack that does little damage, dance away, and yell loudly that he (Scalzi) "won" the fight, and get one of his friends (Phoenician) to announce it loudly too, trying to bend reality through propaganda.

This is usually a few seconds before the other kid (Vox) starts to really beat the high holy hell out of the little twerp (Scalzi) whilst he starts crying. By then, the only voice pushing for Scalzi as a "winner are his little hangers on (Phoenician).

Anonymous Kyle In Japan February 08, 2013 9:42 AM

You can count me among the many (well, all) of the Ilk who don't "hate" Scalzi but just find his gooberness to be hilariously entertaining. If Scalzi really wants me to hate him, he has to at least strange some puppies or something.

What I find most interesting; This doesn't even work on Bujold's cover. I mean, when you reverse the sexes of the art, it just makes the men look like homosexuals, which in turn makes it nasty because it's a sexually deviant behavior. While, when a man is left there surrounded by women, you just think it's normal. I hadn't really ever pondered why one just looks wrong. It certainly encourages me not to want to read any of the author's posing books and think maybe I should pick up a Bujold or Anderson book.

The question is, was that their intent? Obviously, I am new and might have missed the posts on this issue.

@test123 - no, as soon as one rabbit is in the process of being eaten, the others either scatter or freeze up completely. Those who consider such whiny weakness a virtue will not have anyone to defend them if they end up outside the warren. The very thing they consider a virtue is what prevents or destroys even attempts at solidarity. Even friendship requires courage and bravery.

Phoenician is bragging from the deepest, darkest part of the warren complimenting Scalzi for poking a nose up and sniffing within a few feet of the entrance.

How does the warren show their attempt at bravery? By giving money to those who would kill defenseless babies in their mother's wombs. They won't even volunteer at an abortion clinic and help shred the babies themselves. Or even personally volunteer to escort women in dangerous places (that would be both sexist and require actual bravery). Nor even something simply useful like serving at a homeless shelter. The gestures are not entirely meaningless, they do work to amplify the very visible cowardice.

This may be our cruelty artist's magnum opus.

As I watch this play out I have some pity for Scalzi, but only in the way I would pity any other addict with an ultimately suicidal habit since God does not wish the death of any sinner. Yet it is a freely chosen death - or the hundred deaths of the coward.

I suspect when this is over, Phoenician will send a similarly worded letter of contempt to Scalzi about whatever ends up being the climax of this battle.

There is no dishonor in losing when fighting fairly and bravely, or even when wisely stating one is clearly outmatched and suing for peace.

But there is equally no honor nor virtue in the whiny, cowardly, passive-aggression. I can't think of the proper word for it but all ages treated such with contempt, even when done by a woman. It is bad enough to suffer from the vice - but hypocrisy is the compliment vice pays to virtue. When they aren't even hypocrites and treat their own contemptible actions as virtues it is a special evil. That deserves no pity. It deserves to be exposed for the evil that it is in all its horror.

I can only hope and pray that his fellow rabbits will be shocked enough to at least consider repenting and becoming even small men instead of bigger rabbits.

This isn't quite true. The various coverage I've seen of this vital kerfuffle has shown others to be laughing, and not at Mr. Scalzi. And most coverage has painted Mr. Scalzi's actions as a pretty good idea and a good way of dealing with stalkers.

Granted, this is about as minor an affair as there can be. However, I'm pretty sure you've not gained more positive attention, if any outside this blog, as a result. And I'm positive that Mr. Scalzi has gained a good deal more positive attention than he previously possessed.

Scalzi is basically going to the media and saying, "Help, there's a guy on the internet who disagrees with me, and nothing happens when I call him names." Name calling is such a vital tool in the collectivist bag of tricks that they are stunned and dispirited when it fails to silence their opposition.

There's hardly anything Scalzi could do to more effectively expose his own ineffectualness. That said, I certainly don't hate the man either. Rapers gonna rape.

@Tad

No, it hinges on the assumption by Mr. Scalzi that the charities that he has identified help people that Vox Day has derided, would deride or that he believes are unworthy of support.

I think you're not understanding the big picture, so I'm going to try to break it down simply. Vox doesn't care about Scalzi's assumptions about what will hurt him. Vox doesn't care about Scalzi's attempts to "hurt" him. Vox doesn't care about Scalzi other than to be amused by Scalzi's increasingly escalating attempts to "hurt" him. You can't hurt somebody who doesn't care what you think of him or her. This is the exact difference between Scalzi and Vox. Scalzi is reveling in all his loving support of his fellow Gammas because that's what they need. Look over his ground rules for all those donations. Instead of holding all those people to their "pledges," instead of forcing them to put up or shut up, and even better, he CROWS about all the support he is getting and that big fat sum of money, in his ground rules for the donations, he gives everyone so much wiggle room to back out of their donations that I doubt he will end up with more than $5K total by the end of the year. And they will all congratulate themselves and each other for sticking it to Vox, even though he. does. not. care. I suspect that all of this blogging of the "battle" from Vox's side is more for comedy value than anything else. I may be wrong though. He's smart. He may have an illustrative endgame on gamma behavior being set up here.

Anonymous rho February 08, 2013 12:19 PM

It's interesting to me that Scalzi doesn't really go into the "McRapey" part. He simply leaves it at "name-calling," but doesn't go into specifics.

I suspect it's because he knows that talking about how he wrote a satirical piece as a rapist, and then having to admit that he himself "got into the mind of a rapist" will come off as turbocreepy.

I haven't read any of Scalzi's books, but during this trainwreck I've read a fair few of his posts. I know they're just throwaway posts/comments, and he's not carefully polishing each one to a shine, but even accounting for that they're not very clever. Though he obviously thinks each one is super clever. He sprinkles little bon mots around, but overall they kind of plod along.

I don't think he's a bad writer, but I suspect he's merely above average. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but one should comport oneself properly. I get the feeling he holds himself in higher regard than he should, but that's just my impression. Choosing to remain in the electronic hugbox probably isn't helping him as a writer.

Perhaps you've all already addressed this...but if giving $50k to his select basket of charities is good...would he consider extending the offer to others? I barely even know who this Scalzi fellow is, but his reaction to this whole affair is just...repellant. I'd be happy to further insult him and he can pitch in yet another $5 to further his goals.

Just think of the total pile of win-win! If he donates $50k of his money just for your insults (pithy as they are), he could easily donate hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars if he were to extend the offer to the wider public. Everyone wins! ...why hasn't he already suggested this?

Ought I respect the views of blind men evaluating silent movies? Or those deaf from birth comparing Bach, Beethoven, Haydn, and Mozart?

To consider Scalzi's response as creative is to utterly miss the point - as much as the response misses the target. It ends up being very high art if you consider finger painting art. It is merely a fine whine. Aggression which is so passive as to be irrelevant - not even annoying (or worse, comic, as gammy bunny). Finding a way to run away faster, to evade the battle better...

I can only think of Monty Python & the Holy Grail with the "Bravely Ran Away" chorus courtesy of Sir Robin's Minstrels (which has been featured at this blog before, I think in response to PZ's refusal).

I'm not sure if it was really Sun Tsu, but "Do not interrupt your enemy when he is engaged in self-destruction". Especially when it is entertaining.

There is a similar problem with the local Catholic celebrities. They have no idea why the could not convince their friends, family, and neighbors not to vote for Obama. And just had a conference which was a big waste - they should have just met, formed a circle, turned right or left, and patted themselves on the back, and returned home. Forgot nothing, learned nothing.

No matter how many sycophants applaud you, or even idiots who applaud at anything, it means nothing. If you are failing or losing, you have to ask the right questions, and it is not how can I annoy those winning.

Vox if you've seen the Space Marine trademark dispute (of which Scalzi has commented on), what do you think of it and the use of legal threats in general to destroy or limit creative expression?

To an extent. But you can't really blame the media when one Tor author is currying favor with a more established Tor author and the Tor editors intentionally gets the ball rolling by engaging in ludicrous journalistic malpractice.

This is where my limits of understanding start to appear.

I was pretty confident that VD would revisit the satirical rapist bit. The second level appears when you start counting coup on Scalzi's revisionist interpretation of a news story; viz. how he chose to frame his satirical rebuttal inside of rape, rather than from a pro-life point-of-view.

That is, he chose to frame his argument within the boundaries of rape. Scalzi has determined that, to the best of his ability to reason, that the primary issue to be regarded is rape. Therefore, to the best of his ability to fathom, is whether rape is good or bad. He has decided that, contrary to popular belief, that rape is bad; therefore he comes out bravely against rape, in opposition to the RSHD in the form of VD.

Let's all ponder the inability of a nominally well-known fiction author who is incapable of standing outside himself. Let's ponder his ability to develop any character which is not a submarine Mary Sue. I think it's clear he would be incapable of producing anything more than marketable fiction, in the mold of adolescent wizards or sparkly vampires.

At any point does one fail to determine that Scalzi is writing marketable fictions based on a pre-determined framework? How is it anything less than propaganda, even if you agree with it?

I assumed that this was where this was going. But VD implies there is more going on, if I read that correctly.

"Best ROI ever. Keep..."

Another variation of the Castro St Weathervane. Was pointing east, now pointing west; just give it time to figure out which way the wind is blowing so as to look like it's playing with itself correctly.

And I'm positive that Mr. Scalzi has gained a good deal more positive attention than he previously possessed.

Tad is still making the mistake of thinking this is a popularity contest. When you begin to understand why Scalzi looks foolish you will be ready, padawan.

Why are you so obsessed with it then?

It's amusing.

No, you're lying, Tad. You aren't amused, you're angry. Just admit it and perhaps you'll get a little respect. That false-frame nonsense will get you none.

Best ROI ever. Keep dancing, fools.

How come the rabbits always encourage us to keep talking when what they really want to say is, "shut up and stop shining the light of truth on my false view of reality!"

It's not a very honest form of communication.

Blimey. The vitriol. I came over here to take a look after reading Scalzi's post. I don't think I'll be back .......
