A Hultgreen-Curie near miss
Frankly, I'm surprised the woman didn't somehow manage to trip, fall, break her neck, and expire on the field during the tryout:
It was always a long shot that Lauren Silberman would wind up impressing an NFL team so much during a regional combine that they wound up signing her for a chance to compete to become their kicker this summer. It’s a much longer shot after her day at the New York/New Jersey Regional Scouting Combine, held at Jets headquarters in New Jersey, ended early because of an injury. Mike Garafolo of USA Today reports that Silberman landed awkwardly after her first kickoff, which traveled just 16 yards, and then asked to see a trainer after a 14-yard kick on her second try.To put those distances into perspective, Ender was kicking 20-yard field goals when he was eight years old. Video of this epic and historic kick, which marks a major step forward in the long march towards Fempire, is below.

Don't rule out life-threatening complications from the strained quad just yet.
The video is amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zj7I0r7YVEE

She is a pioneer!
Another article had several other anons state that she'd asked them for pointers on how to kick the ball correctly.
To put those distances into perspective, Ender was kicking 20-yard field goals when he was eight years old.
For further perspective, she wasn't even attempting field goals, just kickoffs, which are much easier.
Somehow she's a victim of that dastardly patriarchy.
...Other anons = men trying out for the same spot, in earnest.
Wasn't said whether or not they actually told her anything other than "With your foot".
Yeah, but Ender has the unfair advantage of societal pressures on everyone's expectations of his superior abilities due to de-facto white male privilege. Even the ball conforms to the shape of his foot better simply because it believes in the inherent superiority of having male sex organs. If everyone didn't teach their kids (and their footballs) from cradle to grave that men were better at sports, then women would probably be way better. It's just not a fair comparison!
She'd have a much better shot at an award if she actually made the NFL. She'd be dead, quit, or have a career ending injury before the end of the preseason. Assuming she made it through training camp.

I guess if a team needs an onside kick specialist ( or a sandwich) they know who to call.
That's funny!
Lauren Silberman just doesn't have the ring that Danica Patrick has. Nor was Lauren on the poll either :)
This almost unreal. Soccer players (even girls) can kick a soccer ball at least 50 yeards. She literally has never even seen a football before. How the hell did she even get a tryout?
Hey, you try kicking a ball while wearing an IUD.
Hey, it's hard to fault someone for trying.
How the hell did she even get a tryout?
Anyone can tryout if they pay the fee.
I remember many decades ago some player arranged for his wife to kick an extra point in some semi-pro league and the offensive line, being offended by this outrage, let the defense rush unabated, and they turned her into a skid mark.
Hey, it's hard to fault someone for trying.
She wasn't trying. I know a 14-15 yo girls who can kick better than that. She was making a point of some kind. Hopefully she was trying to demonstrate that women shouldn't be in the NFL even as kickers. I wouldn't fault her for that, because she succeeded admirably.

It was an opportunity for Britain’s brightest minds to do battle through sharpened wit and force of argument.
But Cambridge University students have mounted a boycott of a prestigious debating competition after two speakers, including one of their members who ranks amongst the best in the world, were left on brink of tears after being subjected to rhetoric of a cruder variety.
Students from Glasgow are alleged to have called out “Shame woman” and made derogatory comments about the physique and appearance of debaters Marlena Valles and Rebecca Meredith.
Miss Valles has been named the best speaker in Scotland at this year’s Scottish National debating championships, while Miss Meredith has been ranked amongst the top twenty speakers in the world.
Top twenty, and can't field an insult any more than Lauren can a goal.
Listening to a couple of local (Detroit area) sports guys discuss this. What amused me was that one of the commentators stated that a woman should never kick, because often kickers (especially on kick-offs) are asked to perhaps block or even tackle - and that would put her in a dangerous situation.
His co-host in his best rabbit fashion, shared that that was an unfair assessment, that she had the RIGHT to be out there as any male kicker. Ahhh....the sweet argument of fairness.
She got a tryout because she can, when not injured, actually kick the ball.
As for her playing on an NFL team ... stupid.
The whole thing looks like a stunt.
That jersey made her look fat anyway.
How many times was she able to bench 225?
She'd be dead, quit, or have a career ending injury before the end of the preseason.
Even kickers participate in tackling drills AFAIK. I'm guessing the first time a 210 lbs. tight end blocked a female kicker in practice she'd have have second thoughts about playing.
She'd be perfect for Manti Teo. He's into fakes.
No Jart, after the first time, she would have no thoughts.
She got a tryout because she can, when not injured, actually kick the ball.
Umm, did you watch that video? I've seen college mascots with better technique.
Publicity stunt.
Ender was kicking 20-yard field goals when he was eight years old.
Was that before he left for Lusitania?
She kicks like a girl.
Someone had to say it.
And Salt, it's "pole", not "poll". Not only correct.....but waaaaaay better for use in (written) double entendres.
I swear if men invented a high profile sport consisting of kicked each other in the testicles, some woman would insist on being able to play.
The NFL is run by racist and women-hating old white men so it's not hard to figure out that this incredible athlete probably had a narcotic dart shot into her leg by some kind of miniature blowgun.
Or perhaps a tiny crossbow. They're real bastards at the NFL. I once got lost looking for the bathroom at a game and they made me eat a live giant bird spider on camera. Or maybe that was Danielle Paralytic.
My mind was never the same after that incident so reality is pretty much subjective.
Those aren't stripper poles lady. So get out of here.
Rex Ryan just wanted to get a look at her feet.
LOL. That video! Five stars for comedic performance. Good job, Lauren.
20 yards is impressive for an eight-year old.
@ drose
Obviously, you've never heard of the Rochambeau
She wasn't trying. I know a 14-15 yo girls who can kick better than that. She was making a point of some kind.
Speculation is publicity stunt for some speaking/life coach venture of hers.
It's an aspect of modern grrrl power that beclowning yourself doesn't count as a failed publicity stunt.
JartStar---
210 lbs. tight end??? lol
Maybe in smaller high schools.
The average NFL tight end is near 260-265 at this point. Put that level of muscle weight with momentum near a 125 lbs woman and death may occur.
The Jets have reached out to her agent to ask about a contract for this year.
There are girls that can kick pretty well, some playing in HS and even college. For a girl to have the leg strength to be able to kickoff though, she would need to be able to carry it 65 yds (plus say and extra 5-10 yards to prevent a run back), so that would be a real rarity (hell, a lot of male kickers in the nfl struggle to kick it that far). But there are girls out there that can kick 40-45 yd field goals pretty well, but this girl isn't one of them, and just embarrassed herself and probably made it more difficult for a female kicker with real ability to get a tryout in the future.
Obviously this would have turned out better for team XX if sister Lucy had been allowed to act as place setter for the try out......
Even Vinatieri misses an 80 yarder now and then.
Given those distances I'm guessing we are seeing early effects of the injury. Or she chocked. I know fairly non athletic women that kick much farther than that.

I had the (mis)fortune of being a restaurant once when the 2010 Miami Dolphins were enjoying a meal at Brazilian steak house.
It is a little shocking to see so many very large men together. And I am fairly certain the dolphins are not especially large for the league.
With that title, i thought for sure Vox was going to comment on Danica Patrick's crash at the race in Phoenix, Arizona last weekend...I even smiled and thought Hultgreen-Currie when i heard it on the news.

How I loathe this post-WW2 social engineering, of everything from the office and public schools to the World of Sports. I know we wanted to use the baby boom and postwar prosperity to right wrongs, but COME ON. It has been done. It is 2013 now. We have the internet. And robots. And cell phones. And robots using cell phones broadcast on the internet.
I hate dealing with these incompetents, either out in play or in at work. They at least had an excuse back in the 60s and 70s since it was still new. Whether it's feminism of men and women, to multiculturalism of every race, it is counterproductive.
Social engineering does not work (well, 80% of it).
Genetic engineering tits or GTFO.
Not all female kickers are like that! No, really, there are precious snowflakes that can kick like any stupid boy out there. Better, in fact.
I'll bet you dollars to donuts this woman was the victim of attempted or completed rape not too long ago. She really just needs to get a fcuk-buddy.
/D. Paradis
Also, have you ever seen a 180 lb kicker make a routine tackle? Their teammates wind up picking them up in a stupor. What do you think would happen to a 50 lb lighter female? Ridiculous
The 49'ers should be seriously looking at this prospect.

A short commentary on MRA leaders
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ElZzB4P2D4
The so called "Leaders" of the MRA area are lying to you all. They are telling you that governments make legislation that you HAVE to obey and that they can FORCE you to obey using the police FORCE. This is a lie. They know it is a lie. And they are telling you lies that they know are lies.
The TRUTH is that legislation is NOT LAW and you do not have to obey ANY legislation. Here are links to videos that go into this in detail. This is not a new idea. Many people KNOW that legislation is not law and have been telling you so for a long time.
The excuse offered is usually "well the guvment can hurt you if you do not obey" is just that. An excuse. The only reason that guvments do hurt men who do not obey is because men have TOLERATED these crimes and not formed new courts to put criminals in guvment on trial. Men only have themselves to blame.
Guys and their obsession with length...geesh.
She was thrown off by the guy holding the ball, who kept whispering "I can smell your c*nt" when she came running up.
It would have flown much, much further but it hit the glass ceiling.
Now can someone please replace all Scott Norwood footage with this reverse Lucy winging it off the tee, set to the tune of "Stuck in A Moment You Can't Get Out Of?"
All this video is missing is Charlie Brown's AUUUUUUGGH!
Good grief.
Do we get to see her boobs ?
Almost a Danica in the making.
Besides, I'm sure I could give it the editing it deserves if I had the software. Slow motion, extreme closeup of the ball, and El Condor Pasa playing in the background.
The current view angle is so oppressive.
Good effort!
I just read where the Lingerie Football League said that Silberman wasn't good enough to play in their league.
(Not pretty enough, either).
George Plimpton already made money off this. Even if she gets the requisite book deal and Oprah tour, she's still doing nothing more than duplicating that which has already been done 45 years ago.
I don't think Curie should be in the name. That is not a good example as Curie did fantastic work in chemisty, physics, and mathematics on her own. They even named a radioactive unit after her (1 Ci = 3.7 x 10^10 decays per second => 1 Becquerel = 1 Bq = 1 decay / second) Unless of course the point was to popularize the syndrome and piss off diversicrats at the same time, of which I approve.
She was first-rate like Emmy Noether in mathematics or Ada Lovelace. It is rare for a woman to legitimately match the achievement of a man in those fields, but they happen. They are just less statistically common.

Dude, nobody cares about Paul Elam.
She can't kick a ball 20 yards, but I see no reason that she couldn't fight another man to the death on a battlefield.
I just love this choice morsel of propaganda the Jezz-bots plopped onto the net today:
"While some outlets are taking a positive spin on the athlete's tryout, others are calling her attempt "embarrassing," "botched" and ego-bruising."
The honesty! It burns! Trigger Warrnnningggg!!!!
@Dr. Idle Spectator:
"Curie" is in the name because she died from radiation exposure. A reference to Hultgreen-Curie Syndrome passes no judgment on the worthiness of the achievements of female pioneers--it's simply an observation of their tendency to bump themselves off in the course of making said achievements.
Idle - that doesn't change the fact she died in the course of being a female pioneer.

I thought the point was due to gross incompetence, not just pioneering something. It's not like Marie Curie was some Generalette Radioactive Custer flying into death. She died at a normal life expectancy at 66, Hultgreen was 29.
But didn't she have to do it singlehandedly, to leave the other had free to sockpuppet Pierre?
No. She won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911 on her own. Plus he daugther Irene also won later on. Not to mention most prizes are shared, as Pierre Curie worked equally with Henri Becquerel.
RINO, you just couldn't resist the cheap shot against the Jets. Rex has got everything under control. Relax.
Come on now dread ilk, don't be so hard.
Imagine judging VD by one of the innumerate times he got his rear handed to him by bigger, faster, smarter, and better trained opponents in his dojo. Day after day after day after day after day he was beaten, again and again and again. Mercilessly he was pounded into the metaphorical dirt, losing face a seemingly endless amount of times. He was abused and suffered time and again.
On the merits of any one of those countless failures, you could have said similar things about his performance.
For all we know this is the ladies first day on the way to earning respect of future teammates.
"Umm, did you watch that video? I've seen college mascots with better technique."
Agreed. However, another article about her stated: "Silberman aggravated a right quadriceps injury".
Last soccer season I dealt with a torn quad. My tear was not particularly severe and was healed in about 6 weeks - but kicking the ball with more than about 40% power felt like someone was stabbing me in the quad with a knife. Sprinting was quite painful as well. I'm quite sure that my form did not look particularly good, either due to the anticipation of pain.
She had/has no chance of making an NFL roster (and neither would I at 5'4", 145) but I have no doubt she can kick better than that when not injured. Heck my 9 year old daughter can kick like that. One of the girls in our league is good for at least 45 yards.
She needs to find a decent adult soccer league and play - and drop the ridiculous hope of making the NFL.
For all we know this is the ladies first day on the way to earning respect of future teammates.
Very true. I am rooting for her. I very much want to see her take a full speed hit. Or deliver a one.
"She can't kick a ball 20 yards, but I see no reason that she couldn't fight another man to the death on a battlefield."
Goodell seems to agree.
"The NFL's commissioner, Roger Goodell, said at the time: "Times are changing. The military is about to allow women into combat. If women are going to be fighting on the battlefield, how can we stop them from participating in football? It's not fair."

If Vox went into the dojo with a giant of man with the same or better speed, did it knowingly, and got smeared, it too would be hilarious.

Thank God I am not President of Harvard. I also heard that he was a total dick that everyone hated, and they might have used that incident as an excuse to get rid of him. I despise academia, it is as bitchy as a sorority slumber party sometimes.
The Summers-Facebook-Winklevoss incident in his office made me laugh though. One Jew sides with another Jew against two WASPs? Color me unidled.
Now, I'm not saying Zuckerberg stole Facebook, but I find Larry Summer's reaction VERY interesting from a sociological point of view.
Looks like Barack Obama trying to kick a pumpkin at a gay halloween festival...
Saw this the other day:
"it is alarmingly easy to use phrases like "fight like a man" "throw like a girl" etc. without considering what they mean and reinforce"
I sometimes have to question your aprevistan view of God's indifference, Vox. I mean, there's this miniscule Twitter quote, one of millions of ramblings from the seventh hell of SWPL Cubical Land... And then all of a sudden, no more than a day later this video pops up, like the phoenix of Kreutzer rising from the ashes of a society that once understood its gender differences, blazing across the sky (youtube) as if to answer this one insignificant line with a Monty Python moment.
Granted, the ball's being kicked rather than thrown.
And there still needs to be a televised case of a woman trying to fight a man. And losing horribly.
Two points back to aprevistanism. For the moment.
She's not even a FG kicker, she's a soccer player. It was a stunt, or she's utterly ignorant. As for Goodell, he's an idiot. A very well paid one who's already thinking ahead when liberals start asking him why he's making 29 kazillion dollars. Solution: 10 politically correct Our Father's and perhaps a future promise to be inclusive, diverse, and happy, and invite the cast of Glee to do one series of downs in a pre-season game wearing boas and highheels.
If only there was a rule to stop men kicking the ball more than 15 yards, then women would be able to show their superiority!
She needs to find a decent adult soccer league and play - and drop the ridiculous hope of making the NFL.
Decent soccer league...not a chance. Look at the link Tank posted, from before she was injured. Her kicking technique is poor and she simply can't run, she sways like a ship on high seas. All in all she would make a perfect centre half bench in any team
I don't see what the freakin' problem is. It's obvious they just need to make footballs fields shorter! Sexists!
Agreed. However, another article about her stated: "Silberman aggravated a right quadriceps injury".

Pedantry is only acceptable when it's clever or funny. Affecting not to know something that's common knowledge just makes you look like a putz.
And what's Marie Curie to you, anyway, that you'd waste a perfectly nice afternoon defending a woman who's seventy years past caring? What are you, a polonium salesman?
Well, if she had a hot bod and a cute face she could have tried out for the cheerleading squad...and saved face.

Not my point at all, Spectator, but *Vox's* point, which you seemed to misunderstand (it's clear now you were deliberately misunderstanding it, in hopes of picking a fight). I assumed you were a newcomer, as I rarely pay attention to names, and hoped to clarify Vox's coinage of "Hultgreen-Curie" for you. A simple favor (as I saw it) has bought me nothing but bile; I'm not sure why. I suspect it's a vicious circle; the people you know in real life have long since stopped pretending cordiality, which makes you lash out in suspicion at anyone who *does* engage with you. My advice? Start cutting the pills in half, step outside your Unabomber-style shack for a breath of fresh air once in a while, and try interacting normally with people (i.e. supress the urge to begin every conversation by arguing with or correcting the other fellow). I think you'd like it out here in society; we're pretty nice when you get to know us.

I knew a guy who kicked in High School and, at 25, decided to do one of these tryouts (it was for the San Diego Chargers). Unlike Little Miss Thunderfoot here, he actually completed the entire tryout. Went home with two broken fingers and sprained ankle. Said he did great, was nailing 50 yard FGs, right up until they turned on the sound system. Huge concert-style stacks blaring crowd noise. Totally psyched him (and all the other amateurs) out. The guys with pro experience kept doing fine, but all the rest started shanking and squibbing their kicks when the noise started up.
He was about 180-190 lbs, in really good shape. Broke his fingers making a tackle, sprained his ankle punting.
I bet she throws like 'a' scalzi...

She got a tryout because she can, when not injured, actually kick the ball.
Ahh, your link. Gregg Rosenthal of the NFL's official site writing about Lauren Silberman of New Yahk Citay. Like I said in another post about America 2013.
That's why she was in the tryout and that's why the media pushed it. Plain old looking out for, and holding the door for their cousins as usual.
Sort of related question regarding the upcoming World Cup
They are putting in special seating for obese people? Really? Never heard of such a thing in a sports arena.
That was a pathetic display on the part of the woman trying out for the NFL. Some places just need to be declared off limits to women.

Yes, and I am demonstrating why I think Vox is incorrect in his naming of the latter-portion of the syndrome. The only deliberation is in me being right.

Because you are autistic? And my words are sparkley bile, like gleaming rays from a dawning new-day sun. Get it right.
[___B_L_U_E___]>
A) Marie Curie does not demonstrate the Hultgreen-Curie Syndrome, since she died long after her achievements were made, not during the course of it.
B) She continued with her own achievements long after her husband's death.
C) Her death was not a result of incompetence as in the case of Hultgreen.
D) She's not an affirmative action candidate.
E) Perhaps the term Hultgreen-Earhart would be a more appropriate name.

Do you even know what a circle is? For one thing, the ending point has to go back to the starting point, even rhetorically. That sounds more like a straight line (or list...) of events. Bigger fail than Madonna after 40.

Mmmm....donuts.
Youtube Catherine Destivelle. The direct opposite of Hultgreen-Curie as you say.
"Miss Valles has been named the best speaker in Scotland at this year’s Scottish National debating championships, while Miss Meredith has been ranked amongst the top twenty speakers in the world."
Top 20 in the Anglophone world, surely.

1.) Ever dropped a jar of salsa? Same thing.
2.) Ever seen a little kid run face first into the leg of an adult? Same thing.
One would imagine that a female aspiring to play football would be built like a brick shithouse.
This is the best post on this topic I have ever read. I am really very impressed with it. Keep blogging!
This says everything I ever needed to know about feminism.
Surely, there comes a moment, when history is not but a progression, but a reality of things as they have always been.
And yes, put that to blacks not having one prosperous nation of their own worth a damn, Arabs being crazy fucks, Chinese being an insulated society, Koreans being passive aggressive, Russians consumed by their own corruption. Just run it down the line! History! Over here! White man talking stuff shut 'im down!
Too dangerous. Women do not belong in actual sports.
And yes, put that to blacks not having one prosperous nation of their own worth a damn
This from someone whom Huggums once called a whigger...
People change.
I'm still a wigger Markku. Always and forever. I just recognise real, and don't let emotional appeals, from anyone, change the fact that, America's glaring problems are not white.
(and neither would I at 5'4", 145)
She's short, fat and slow. She could have all the technique in the world and she'd still have a shallow kick that a D-line could knock down just by standing up and waving their arms. Physics > feminism.
The Army... people are in an uproar about the women in the infantry thing, nobody has any faith that the brass won't lower the standards or cheat the gals through infantry basic. A couple girls almost made it a week in Marine infantry basic. What kills me about the whole thing is that it's just some feminists that want power and prestige - not to do the job, or accomplish the mission. Military peeps despise that personality type.

Can't help but marvel at the stubborn devotion to such a demonstrably - and recently - failed idea. The level of denial involved is mind-boggling.
"That is not a good example as Curie did fantastic work in chemisty, physics, and mathematics on her own. They even named a radioactive unit after her"
No she didn't. Emmy Noether is ok, Ada Lovelace is not, it's an insulting for them to be mentioned together. Curie's second nobel wasn't shared because her husband had died earlier, and her first prize was the result of her husband's request to share it with her.
"It is rare for a woman to legitimately match the achievement of a man in those fields, but they happen. "
Rutherford did much better(Charles Murray) than her or her husband, but you don't hear his name nor did he get a second noble. Look up George Greene sometime, if you know who Maxwell was.
"Not to mention most prizes are shared, as Pierre Curie worked equally with Henri Becquerel."
Pierre was a physicist of some reputation. His invention related to piezo-electricity was the one used by his wife. The unit Curie is named after both of them, well, it was his surname.
A woman was attacked and fatally injured by a lion after getting into a cage with the animal at Cat Haven sanctuary in Dunlap, Calif.
DUNLAP, Calif. — A female intern-volunteer was killed Wednesday by a lion at a private wild animal park in Central California, and state and local authorities were trying to determine what might have caused the fatal attack.
No she didn't
Yes, she did.
and her first prize was the result of her husband's request to share it with her.
In same way they would not even let Noether study mathematics properly at the university and she had to be recommended by the male faculty. Do try to keep up.
Emmy Noether is ok, Ada Lovelace is not, it's an insulting for them to be mentioned together
"Ok"? She single handledly advanced abstract algebra. Not to mention Noetherian Rings. The only other adjective like that off-hand I can think of is Abelian.
And of course it is insulting, Noether was in math and Lovelace was in Computer Science.
Oh Idle you big kidder, you!
Pierre was a physicist of some reputation
I would certainly hope so, winning a Nobel Prize and working with Henri Becquerel (again, more obviousness).
Rutherford did much better(Charles Murray) than her or her husband, but you don't hear his name nor did he get a second noble. Look up George Greene sometime
Yes, many who deserved "noble" prizes did not recieve them (again, obviousness).
if you know who Maxwell was.
Maxwell's Equations from Electricity and Magnetism? Naw, never heard of him. Unless you meant Maxwell Coffee. Hyuk, hyuk.
His invention related to piezo-electricity was the one used by his wife. The unit Curie is named after both of them, well, it was his surname.
Correct. For the laymen reading, that's basically electricity generated by pressure. And there shouldn't be a hyphen after piezo.
Let me help you out with this: {a, b}
a - Pierre
b - Marie
Now, if it is named after both a and b, is it not also named after b? (again, more obviousness)
Especially since women generally take the husband's surname after marriage. Glad I could clear this up for you (again, obvious).
I think 80% of your post was stating the freaking obvious. But I responded anyway since you flattered to spectate me idyllically.
