Defined by one's enemies

I could not be more pleased to know that I am not on the side of chinless men without chests - and I use the term "men" in a very loose sense - such as John Scalzi and Wil Wheaton.
Fuck the NRA.

Wil Wheaton (@wilw) April 17, 2013
Savor the sweetness of their tears.  Savor their angry bitterness about your ability to defend yourself against their proxies with lethal force. And remember that because they will never stop being afraid, the rabbits will never stop trying to defang the wolves.

Anonymous Daniel April 18, 2013 1:04 PM

Wheaton later tweeted, while playing Savage Worlds: "We just killed the guys we were trying to interrogate. Oops."

I'm sure playing a torturing armed authority figure as a fantasy would have no impact on a chestless man's stance on the right for only the state to possess guns.

Anonymous The Gray Man April 18, 2013 1:07 PM

That is awesome Astro! Yeah, Will Wheaton will always be a geeky little gamma rabbit. Of all the Star Trek franchise characters, his was the least enjoyable. He just did not seem real or relatable as a character.

Is there anything lower on the scale, or is rabbit the lowest one can go?

It is bad enough when someone who is famous and can have status doesn't become alpha, but somehow far worse when they gamma-down.

I'm not sure whether this is tragedy or horror, but it might not matter.

His character was a momma's boy, so it was probably easy, but you would think he would eventually show evidence of growing up. How many years?

(I wonder if someone would make a Gamma Rabbit costume he could wear to his next (pun intended) con).

One thing I notice about Wheaton and Scalzi: Through their words and mannerisms, both constantly attempt to pass themselves off as edgy 15-year-olds; and they're both in their 40s. Scalzi in particular has no adult presence, let alone a masculine presence.

The obsession with being a 40-something juvenile seems to dovetail perfectly with the marked effeminacy of both these characters.

Anonymous Stilicho April 18, 2013 2:00 PM

Quite. It's as if puberty did not fully take with those types and they are stuck in the middle, trying to figure it all out and appear cool at the same time.

Or they could be Bronies.

Anonymous Jeigh Di April 18, 2013 2:01 PM

If that's true, just how in the hell did the South lose?

Generals like Grant were willing to simply keep sending soldiers into battle regardless of casualities until the Southerners were simply overwhelmed by numbers.

But tz, you may be right. Had Lee ordered his men to continue to fight as guerillas instead of surrendering, the outcome might have been very different. Later he said that had he known what was going to happen he would have died with his men in the field rather than surrender.

You are correct on this. Sisko was certainly Star Trek PC for the most part, but had several admirable qualities including: good leadership, was good father, put up with little B.S., very much had the respect of his crew, and was willing to throw a punch when needed.

DS9 was the best of the series as it took Trek to darker territories to openly questioned Star Trek's founding ideals, principals, and at times found them a wanting and naive. The episode where Sisko committed murder and forgery in order to save the Federation from the Dominion was one of the great moments of Trek.

Some Dude...."I thought the south lost because a) they didnt press their advantage when they had it early on, and b) sherman simply burned their economy to the ground"

a) It was never the goal or purpose of the South to defeat the Union nor did they ever feel they had any advantage to exploit. Their purpose was to defend their country. The few times that Lee was allowed to raid outside the South was always to take the pressure off of Richmond. (Lee's wartime papers are very clear on this point.) No one in the Confederate military or government ever thought they would conquer the North nor was it ever a war aim.

b) Sherman burned a path from Chattanooga to Atlanta and then burned his "march to the sea" to Savannah. That path was seldom more than 100 miles wide, hardly enough to cripple an agrarian economy. The story was much the same in Tennessee, taking Memphis from the Mississippi River and cutting a path from Nashville to Chattanooga. Much of the remainder of the state was not invaded. One of the last big battles of the Civil War was at Macedonia, Tennessee.....near Nashville. It was only AFTER the Civil War was over that most counties were occupied by Federal troops at all.

The public isn't behind gun control. The short lived TV series Jericho made the point that the sinister new government of The Allied States of America did away with the 2nd Amendment in a couple of hours during the constitutional convention. The response was long the lines of, "It's easy to keep a populace in line once you've disarmed them".

The fact that a line like this even comes out of a Hollywood show tells you that there are a lot of people for gun rights everywhere and they understand what's a stake.

I might include Truman, since he was from Missouri and I would like to include Nixon because he graduated from Duke University Law School. But no matter who is included or excluded, Presidents from the South tend to be more of the progressive/liberal variety.

One thing is sure. In time the incorrect reading of the second amendment in "Heller" will be overturned. Somehow, someway, the overwhelming majority of all of the Obamba supporters just knew that the Democrat Senate will pass the bill. Another thing that is for sure is that this administration has managed to take the "rule of law" in this country and make it OPTIONAL. Yeah, we only enforce the laws that the President approves of and not the ones he disagrees with. (The law in this country has become little more than a strongly worded suggestion.)So it really does not matter what the rules and laws might say in the future. Nothing will be enforced anyway (depending on who is President?). Not by this administration and probably not by any future administration either. Without the rule of law, only tyranny remains.

Yeah, well...then there is this:

http://www.businessinsider.com/gun-industry-funds-nra-2013-1

The NRA is supported and propped up by the gun industry. The gun lobby supports the NRA so that the NRA, once an organization representing gun owners, get out in front of issues, rather than the gun manufacturers having to. It's a pretty common thing. But lets not confuse the NRA with being a gun owners organization.

I don't blame the NRA for anything. Besides their lies, which many associations tell, they do a good job at what they are set up to do. I blame the campaign finance system.

That's why the girlfriend introduced much later in the series worked.

Absolutely, DS9 was the best of the 'new' series (TNG was OK, Voyager was usually mediocre and Enterprise, while it had it's moments was showing the franchise was wearing very thin).

Planned parenthood gets 1/3 of its funding from various governments. The rest comes from private donations and grants. Furthermore, the money that is obtained from government grants may not be allocated for abortion services.

This is different from the NRA that gets the vast majority of its funds from gun interests, not gun owners. Plus, gun manufacturers have a commercial interest. They have an interest in selling guns made to kill children and adults.

The question of when one achieves personhood can be both legal and philosophical. That said, just because one can be charged in the death of a living being doesn't make that living being a person. After all, most states will charge you in the death of a dog if you cause the death. That a state or two charge a person with the "murder" of a fetus does not necessarily make the fetus a person. It merely makes it the dead being in a murder charge.

"Even a frakking communist understands gun control is about a monopoly on force. Something the statist, A. Man who takes it up the butt is oblivious to."

Actually it's a monopoly on certain levels of force. Get it right.

"What happens to humans when they die?

I am not trying to be edified, I already know.

What do you say?"

The usual definition is lack of any brain activity? What were you thinking?

"The NRA members only amount to 5 million people. Even among gun owners, the NRA members are a tiny fraction. So it is silly for Obamba and his liberal followers to imagine that the NRA is responsible for the defeat of the gun control bill. I am sure they did what they could but the weight that counted were the gun owners and their families."

This is a naive understanding of politics. The bill went down to defeat not due to gun owners, but because the lawmakers, despite voting for it in the majority, couldn't muster the supermajority because too many feared the power of the NRA to mount a monied campaign against them or for fear of losing NRA money.

I agree with A. Hole. Abortions don't kill children. Abortionists and the sack of shit women who go to them do.

But them I'm not a very good Christian. I hate the sinner. Practical purposes, you see - I can't send the sin to the Chair.

Over time its DS9 that holds up the best of the TNG era Trek shows. As mentioned earlier, the best episode is "In the pale moonlight". Even if for just spawning the whole "Its a fake!" meme.

As for Wheaton, I almost feel sorry for the guy. Yeah his character sucked but the hate some people had for him is crazy. You'd think the almost the whole cast of Voyager would have supplanted that hatred.

"There is a reason why James T. Kirk was resurrected by the film industry in the latest and most successful version of the Star Trek series...he was a man, he had game, and he kicked ass, repeatedly."

Alas, the new version has no maturity.

That a state or two charge a person with the "murder" of a fetus does not necessarily make the fetus a person. It merely makes it the dead being in a murder charge.

The term "murder" is reserved, exclusively, for the wrongful death, with malice of forethought, by one human being (person) of another human being (person). If you want to have an internally consistent position, you must agree that the charge of murder in the case of the unborn human fetus is unequivocally inappropriate in every instance. You can't have it both ways. Pregnant women do not get to be the supreme arbiters for when it is murder and when it isn't. Pick a side and stick with it.

A. Man proclaimed thusly:

"This is a naive understanding of politics. The bill went down to defeat not due to gun owners, but because the lawmakers, despite voting for it in the majority, couldn't muster the supermajority "

Perhaps before you call someone naive, you should check yourself before you wreck yourself? Go read up on American PolySci again and come back when you know enough about the basics of How A Bill Becomes Law.

Oh and do you ever intend to answer Nate?

If a fetus is not a person, then how is the person with the power to kill it a 'mother'?

Anonymous Alexander April 19, 2013 10:07 AM

Now that I've put that question in writing: A,Man - I would like a direct response from you. Please explain how one can be a mother without there being a child.
