Ideology of the gatekeepers

Amanda at the Mad Genius Club notes the connection between the rise of the Left's ideological gatekeepers in publishing and the alarming discovery that boys no longer read books:
I’m happy with just writing stories folks want to read. After all, isn’t that really what we’re supposed to be doing? Writing stories that entertain? If a story doesn’t entertain, folks aren’t going to read it — or at least not finish it. If they don’t read it, then what good is any message we might put into it? That message will be lost because it was never read.

But that isn’t enough for the literati, for all too many editors and, unfortunately, for the boards of too many professional organizations these days. No, you have to be socially relevant and enlightened in your writing. You have to promote what is “right” — as is defined by those who have the loudest voice. Heaven help you if you write something that might offend someone else, especially if you are a male of a certain age.

Maybe I’m old-fashioned (and I know that means I have the wrong beliefs and should probably be silenced now. Sorry, I’m a loud-mouthed woman who isn’t afraid to exercise my First Amendment rights). But I still feel that the story is the thing we should be concerned with and not the message. As I said earlier, folks won’t read the message if they don’t read the story. The corollary to this is: why is publishing in trouble? Because it forgot that readers, on the whole, read to be entertained and to forget about their troubles....

Don’t believe me, ask yourself why so many in publishing are trying to convince us that boys don’t read....

Then we have those publishers and editors and writers who feel that we must address all of society’s ills with our writing and “educate” our readers so there will never be any racism or sexism or any other ism they don’t approve of ever again.
She's merely pointing out the readily apparent, but in light of how some writers have nevertheless attempted to deny there is any ideological bias in the SFWA and in SF/F publishing, and it is either a) one's imagination, or, b) just a complete coincidence to observe that the field is now policed by gatekeepers who assiduously work to prevent the publication of any makehurt or crimethink, I think it is useful to have a look at what sort of works the publishers are actively seeking:

Here is an informative example from one publishing house that freely admits it is "of a progressive bent":

What are we looking for?

As mentioned above, we’re now considering submissions within any genres. We’re specifically looking for novels or collections which demonstrate a significant crossover between genres – as the name or our press suggests. CGP has always been a press with a progressive bent. Bearing that in mind, here are some things we want to see MORE of:
  • Queer Main Characters
  • MC’s of Color
  • Women MC’s
  • Disabled MC’s
  • Science saves the day!
  • Far future
  • Stories set outside North America
Beyond that, there is no hard-and-fast rule; any story that follows the above guidelines will be considered.

What are we NOT looking for?

  • Stories based off the assumption that any particular religion’s beliefs are real
  • Weak women being rescued by macho guys
  • “Science-as-villain”
  • Vampires, zombies, werewolves, Arthurian retellings, Eurocentric faeries, or ghost stories
  • Time travel
Though it should go without saying, any submissions promoting discrimination, misogyny, bigotry, and/or hatred will be deleted without notice or consideration.
Now, consider how many works of the Golden Age are unpublishable by these standards, particularly in light of the opinion of the majority of SFWA members that using the term "lady" as an adjective is competely unacceptable misogyny. And notice how the publisher is not only expressly anti-religious and anti-American, but is actively looking to publish secular science propaganda.  Religion can be the villain - so long as its tenets are shown to be false - but science cannot be.

Obviously, this is a small publisher, but don't deceive yourself.  The major genre publishers may be much more open to vampires, zombies, and time travel than this one, but their standards, the books they have been publishing, and the books they are looking to publish, are all based on the same ideological standard even though they are less open about it.

Speaking of gatekeepers, if you're submitting for ing-game publication, please keep in mind that we're focused on action and story uber alles; the objective is most certainly NOT to become the mirror image of the conventional gatekeepers.

I'll volunteer to read through submissions.

There's no humor on the left, either. Take your recent example - Elves are Douchebags. It was funny. Ambrose Bierce was funny. Mark Twain was funny. Both were realists. Even Kurt Vonnegut - who had a political agenda - was funny.

The Lefty crowd in general, and leftist women in particular, are ahumorous beings. They have had this beaten out of them by the angry, clipped-faced, short-haired Association of University Womyn professors, who they model their life on because they like the cut of their tenure and victimhood. It's just like the women who write things like, "I am funny; just not the kind of funny that makes you laugh."

Well, Capital Gay Press or whatever CGP is up there said they need more queer main characters. Perhaps the confusion over the word "funny".

So, I have this idea for a book about a black lesbian scientist who lost an arm in a 23rd century war against white religious bigots from Namibia. Also, she builds an anti-racism ray with the help of the scientific principle of Kwanzaa-physics.

I'm actually more impressed that you could come up with a list of requirements and taboos as CGP has listed and *not* be funny. A gay transgender Mexican-Ethiopian non-practicing jew who saves the world from Commander Aryan Republican McCapitalist with the power of science(!) ought to have some satirical value.

Overweight feminists, of course.
Sometimes I've wondered what Stranger in a Strange Land would be like if it were about Valerie Michelle rather than Valentine Michael. I figure if it were in any way realistic she would set herself up as the Great Mother and demand worship until the Martians sensed a 'wrongness' and disappeared her.

And if Vox keeps this up, he'll wind up running a major publishing house. There's a market for solid, classic SF/F - which this laundry list of requirements does NOT fit.

I for one admire their honesty - be progressive by all means, just don't lie and and hide behind claims of tolerance and fairness.

The scene opens as our hero, Androginitis Epiphanes, prepares for its day. The neuter pronoun is used because AE is transgender- omnisexual with polyamorous tendencies. It's skin radiates with diaphanous splendor as it liberally applies it daily regimen of cocoa butter and pureed fetuses recently purchased at the local new age health center - a center she helped establish. Established in no small part, as a result of her groundbreaking research into pre-birth tissues and their positive applications towards the cosmetic industry.

As she stares in the mirror she takes a moment to admire the sapphire eyes staring back at her...she allows her mind to drift towards her pending Krav Maga sparring demonstrations later that afternoon.

"Will the men never learn," she whispers to herself. Undefeated in the arena - she takes a moment to admire her champions trophy - a result of being 100-0, earning her the right to claim the title of Master, and claim her seat on the council of anti-violence and proper-speak enforcement bureau.

The counter-culture - people like us - need a "PC Rating System" for modern books.

The scale can be from 1 to 5. 5 meaning, for example, the MC is a disabled black female feminist lesbian scientist from Bangladesh.

The silver lining to all this is that the best stuff, being old, is more and more to be found for free in the public domain.

I've got Ivanhoe open in the other tab (way more awesome than I expected, that one). There's the original epics, the Illiad, the Odyssey, and the Aeniad, then there's the works of Shakespeare and Milton. For SF you've got Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. How long will it be before John Carter, Tarzan, Conan, and Sherlock Holmes are public domain? Most of the modern good stuff is just ripping off the great stuff of yesteryear anyway.

Blogger GF Dad June 26, 2013 10:05 AM

Are boys not reading because they have many other things to occupy their time or are they not reading because most of what passes for YA fiction is female oriented crap?

I hope VD's game/book tie-in works, though I have my doubts. My son loves Half Life and has even gotten his sisters to play it. But even so, telling him that John Ringo's Looking Glass books are essentially Half Life novels written by an SG-1 (which my son also loves) fan won't convince him to even pick up the books. He will read non-fiction, but for fiction, he would rather watch TV or play a game.

I am a free man. I know that no man can free himself without freeing those around him. I can only be free in a free society, so the freedom that I enjoy is only possible by insisting on the same freedoms for everyone else.

No one is obligated to print or amplify or distribute or promote anything that I write or say, but I have the freedom to write or say as I please.

FREE SPEECH DOES NOT CREATE AN OBLIGATION FOR THE READER (OR LISTENER) TO AGREE, NOR DOES IT PROTECT THE SPEAKER FROM REPLY. Even in the most oppressive societies in human history, where those who misspoke the required politically correct gospel could be (and were) put to death, it was not possible to protect the public from the unpleasant truths or non-conforming speech. Ultimately, these things have a way of traveling underground or being later discovered, even if many years after the speaker has died.

My 12 year old son has been an avid reader since 6 years of age. He's read Tolkien and he's reading Heinlein (thanks to Stickwick). And he reads quite a bit of old literature thanks to the Robinson Curriculum we use for his home schooling. Fortunately for him, there's enough works from older publishing eras to keep him going for life.

And many of the books are free due to their age. The situation is really fantastic in its way. Charles Johnson over at LGF had a snit because he considered one of the books, about a man's travels in Africa, to be racist.

The discussion of this book on his forum lead to me being banned because I pointed out that Charles is an idiot. He deleted my posts and banned me because he is a complete coward.

Black Hole Dawn by Stickwick Stapers

It is the year 2299. A group of strong, independent women sets off for the Delta Quadrant aboard the mining starship Imperative. The ship is bound for the BETA asteroid field, where rich deposits of the highly prized element allimoni are waiting to be exploited. En route to BETA, a disastrous miscalculation by the chief astronavigator brings the Imperative across the event horizon of a Kerr-Newman rotating supermassive black hole in the uncharted Alpha Quadrant, plunging the Imperative into gravitational abyss. To the astonishment of the crew, the starship is not ultimately torn apart by tidal forces, but manifests in an unrecognizable region of space. The women quickly realize they have been borne to a Level 2 multiverse universe, consistent with the Einstein-Cartan theory of gravity. The ship's autonav system detects a planet in the habitable zone of a G2V star system to which the women seem irresistibly drawn. There they find Gynos IV, a world filled with new wonders, but also danger, as tensions are flaring between the powerful Womynz Grievance Front and the volatile Front for the Grievances of Womyn.

At the center of the story is Dawn Friedan, the brilliant and fiery leader of the strong, independent women from Earth, whose fiery temperament and brilliant leadership in this time of turmoil leads to her ascendancy to the highest position in Gynos IV's world government. Can she bring peace and vibrancy and unity and diversity to a troubled world or does her strong, independent leadership threaten to set off a chain of events culminating in all-consuming war? Deftly woven into the threads of this thrilling story is the forbidden romance that develops between Dawn and the ruggedly handsome Rex Sigmasson, a brutal and mysterious pirate from the planet Myysojeny III, who has been captured by the Womynz Grievance Front, a group Dawn must placate if there is to be any hope of avoiding catastrophic war.

It's funny, cuz that gay publishing house has goals that are practically the official orthodoxy of the SFWA, itself nothing more than a KKK with pigtails.

As for SFF itself, all the SFWA really wants is a historical version of blacks built the pyramids, Cleopatra was black or gay, gays are a viable "society" rather than the broken dregs of one, women made a difference at the Battle of the Bulge and that white men are lucky stumblebums who dominated women and non-whites for 5,000 years like a Laurel and Hardy movie. In fact, without the male Constitution which is the equivalent of Brin's "uplift," non-whites and women are wearing baseball caps without the baseball to go along with it; just the caps.

As the racist SFWA is a microcosm of America's radicalized second fiddles, they too are ironically the most disdainful of those figures from SF's past that are a veritable template for their own unoriginal and conformist works. In other words, they hate their fathers who could build, and fix anything, and they created effortlessly.

If you can't even rise to the level of people from 1941 you detest as immoral and shallow even with a blueprint and invention spelled out for you, what are the chances you can move forward on your own? And those "old white men" had no such templates laid out for them.

Without their superpowers of "unexamined privilege" and the "male gaze," don't look for mid-list nobodies like N.K. Jemisin or Kate Elliot to do the equivalent of making the next generation of fast attack carriers or operating systems.

Stupidly, for all their addiction to steampunk, without a "male gaze" tutoring them and holding a blueprint, women and non-whites don't show the slightest ability to make even a Civil War ironclad from scratch. They see that as unadulterated bigotry, but it is a demonstrable fact, as is history. Equal before the law is not the same as equal. I'll admit I'm wrong when the Third World stops coming to primitive America and we buy jet planes from Africa outside an SF novel.

Anyone thinking the gatekeepers don't keep gates, or that they demand fundamental transformation toward the artificial simply don't pay attention to the entertainment industry, and are either hooked on the myth of meritocracy, or, for whatever reason, disbelieve the concept of merit.

The ideal entertainment has nothing to do with story, and everything to do with a transsexualized transhuman hybrid with limbs removed to make room for a prominent left wing. Gatekeepers as a mass warp men into bastard angels. It is their function.

The people I both feel sorry for and admire are the ones who want to advance story, and continue to work in a machine that wants to kill it. Every once in a while, they sneak one through. The machine isn't perfect by any means.

At this point, if you're a normal man inclined towards writing, the only reason for entering this insane market at this point is if you might have some sort of a wild beast of a story in you that you absolutely must get out there.

He was getting published by the press I had submitted to, and cried to the editor about what a right wing bigot I was. Next thing I know I get a form reject after having my manuscript sat on for a year.

I called the editor on it and she went crying to her twitter feed about how mean I was. Mind you, this was a grown ass woman who complained about 'sizism', constantly talked about how depressed she was, and couldn't shut the fuck up about chocolate. In other words, your typical SJW.

Probably for the best that I didn't make it past the gatekeepers if that's indicative of the type of people I'd have to work with. The more I look around and read, the more its apparent that's exactly who I would have been dealing with non stop. Who needs that nonsense?

One thing that the Right simply does not understand is that reality does not change itself to conform to their doctrine. This is nowhere more apparent than in this post and comments. Everything here is the antithesis of science. The personal attacks, the appeal to faith, the appeal to the moral danger of accepting scientific conclusions, the cherry picking of favorable results while ignoring and defaming anything that isn't in lock-step with your desires.

This is not science. This is theocratic fascism and a smear against all science. In a world where scientific inquiry is replaced by dogma we have very little to hope for.

White men could be retired to serve as jesters and technological support. There will still be sinks to be fixed in the future.

"We"? You don't speak for me. I resent your attempt to impose your white, male, colonialist "scientific" worldview on us. In a multipolar, multiethnic world of transient value and contextual truth, any attempt by you to foist a monolithic idea of "inquiry" upon us as "truth" can only be recognized as another attempt by the oppressor class to dominate and penetrate the psyche of the "other", a crime of power that is tantamount to mental rape. Add to the the fact that our host and most of his readers are members of a global minority and a single gender and the case for you being a hater, blancophobe, and miscisandrist seems pretty open and shut. You may expect to be pilloried in Twitter as the bigot and fascist you are.

I've thought about writing, if only for my own enjoyment.

The story opens with a man (who may or may not be Herne the Hunter) laughing, running and dancing naked in the midst of a thunder storm, when it dies returning to his small cave with a warm fire and woollen cloak. His days are simple, hunting, fishing, foraging, watching the clouds turn with no real concern for the passage of time (being more than three thousand years old, time has little meaning for him).

Into his contented world comes a woman (part vampire, but baptised to avoid those blood drinking desires) who he raised four hundred years earlier who needs his help. She is, of course, hopelessly in love with him, and of course he is quite aware of that fact but finds her, like most regular people he comes in contact with, quite juvenile.

Of course he'd finally choose to accompany her, after weeks of her asking him, and the story would continue from there. It would include such classic lines as, "a hundred armed men? All we have is a hatchet and a dagger? Okay, you take the fifty on the right, and I'll take the fifty on the left."

They'd have to make some sort of journey to somewhere, in order to find some artefact or another, in order to defeat some ancient (well ancient to her, positively young to him) evil, but the main point of the story would be her attempting to get his attention and his fond indifference as he metaphorically pats her head and calls her a "good girl". Of course, since it is a love story, he'd finally decide to give her the love she was looking for. It would end with her looking out of the farm kitchen, a hand on her baby bump, while he and their two eldest sons work the fields.

I suppose you could consider it the exact opposite of the hero's journey.

Shibes is right EF; political correctness is your gig not the Right's.

You don't see the Right trying to shoehorn themselves into historical movements and events in which men or whites had no real presence. You don't see men making historic excuses for failure. They accept it, try and fix it and move on.

How often have I had to listen to Olmecs were blacks and Cleopatra was black and ancient Egyptians were black and Hannibal was black and blah, blah, blah and stories of Chinese and Irish female pirates.

I'm waiting for someone to say Cortes was a black woman. But put fictional Tarzan in Africa and it's Conrad's "the horror," and everyone start examining their unexamined privilege and crying/whining.

As a matter of fact, I am thinking seriously about writing a hard sci-fi novella. There is so much unexplored narrative territory in physics/astrophysics, especially now that the existence of the supernatural (i.e. whatever exists outside the universe) has joined the scientific mainstream.

"Cup of coffee, ma'am? asked the steward, his paste-white face pale beneath averted blue eyes.

Admiral Prudence Trafalgar said nothing. She simultaneously flipped her natty dreadlocks from her cocoa-colored face and snapped the spyglass to her crystal-clear violet eye. The other eye, a ZamTek ZR-4290 CyberPeeper, instantly established a maser link with the distant vessel. The hailing signal it sent was answered with the correct password: vaginismus.

She allowed her plush lips a wicked grin. The hail-and-response system had proved its worth to the fleet since the Battle of Freidan IV, when the enlightened, freedom-loving forces of the Cosmic United Nation of Terra had first met the brutal forces of the Reactionary Androcentric Phallotheistic Empire. How well she remembered that day, when she as a lowly lieutenant (who nevertheless had graduated at the top of her Academy class back on Msworld) had ridden into battle atop the good old starship Alice B. Toklas.

Grimly, she also remembered the pain in her eye as the enemy's kamikaze DONG-114 fighter had torn into the Toklas' Command Cone, killing all 67 officers senior to her in line of command and putting the destiny of the mighty space battlewagon and flagship of the fleet in the hands of a girl not yet fourteen Old Terran Solar Standard Years old...

She had acquitted herself well in that battle, winning not only the adoration of her crew — many of whom were grizzled veterans of space some thirty years her senior — but instant confirmation in rank and grade by the Cosmo Navy.

“Computer, prepare to dock with the —“ Instincts honed by 48 months in deep space kicked in like lightning. “Hold!” she cried in her throaty soprano voice. “Helm, hard a-lee! That's not one of ours! All hands, battle stations!”

Before the first tones of the alarm had traveled the length of the ship, Prudence had stripped away her semi-transparent dress uniform and donned her opaque, but no less-skin-tight Confrontation Suit and helmet.

Up came the spyglass again. The inbound vessel was casting off blocks of camouflage to reveal its long, peach-colored, blue-traced hull, its knob-like bow pink with heat and pierced by the vertical slit that was its Cosmo Ultra Missile port.

Prudence snapped the glass shut again. “Helm, full ahead!” she ejaculated. “That's no innocent cargo ship! That's the RAPE Fleet flagship, the USS Male Gaze!

All around her, combat displays sprang into life. "All weapons locked on the enemy ship, Miz," said a rating from the weapons station below. Only then, as her ship hurtled towards its foe, did she remember the mess steward. She looked down at him, his thin, white form absurdly weak and pale beside her full two point five meters of statuesque carven ebony. “Oh, yes, boy,” she said distractedly. “I'll have the usual. Black. No sugar.”

My first great revelation was when I realised that lefties were not sane.

It was when -- with a straight face -- a lefty blithely ignored my statement that she (and her ilk) would fight tooth and nail to save a worthless mass murderer from the rope, in the name of clemency -- but would murder an infant in the womb and call it "pro-choice."

Her face actually smoothed out like a that of a wax dummy and she turned to someone else and started a discussion about make-up or something ...

The visible switch-off of the expression (and presumably, the mind) was quite uncanny.

The second item in the liberal creed, after self-righteousness, is unaccountability. Liberals have invented whole college majors--psychology, sociology, women's studies--to prove that nothing is anybody's fault. No one is fond of taking responsibility for his actions, but consider how much you'd have to hate free will to come up with a political platform that advocates killing unborn babies but not convicted murderers. A callous pragmatist might favor abortion and capital punishment. A devout Christian would sanction neither. But it takes years of therapy to arrive at the liberal view. -- P. J. O'Rourke
