Mailvox: a sincere apology

It seems I have inadvertently caused offense, for which I am indeed deeply sorry.  Remo hopped onto the keyboard and took me to task:
As a Sonoran desert toad, I find the labeling of Ms. Hayden as a "grotesque toad" offensive. I quote the good Sir Thomas Browne: "I cannot tell by what logic we call a toad, a bear, or an elephant ugly; they being created in those outward shapes and figures which best express the actions of their inward frames; and having passed that general visitation of God, who saw that all that he had made was good." -Sir Thomas Browne, 1642.

I would point out that licking *me* brings on a state of euphoria and a series of pleasant hallucinations, while licking Ms. Nielson would cause spastic uncontrolled vomiting and give you herpes. Please be more sensitive in your use of the word "toad" in the future. As you can see here our couplings are *FAR* less offensive looking than Ms. Nielson's.

*Ribbit*
I sincerely apologize to Remo, all Sonoran desert toads, and indeed, the families Bufonidae, Bombinatoridae, Discoglossidae, Pelobatidae, Rhinophrynidae, Scaphiopodidae, and Microhylidae for any offense I have caused.  I deeply regret my thoughtless, hurtful remarks, and in the future, will be sure to avoid any further invidious and unflattering comparisons.

So Remo is a psychedelic toad.

Sorry old boy. No licking, but if you don't mind my scraping the secretions, it's said to be a pleasant high.

Blogger Shimshon June 14, 2013 2:30 AM

Vox, you've sold out! What happened to your backbone? Apologizing to mere toads?

Blogger Doom June 14, 2013 2:37 AM

Yeah, well, he isn't apologizing FOR the purpose of mollifying the toads, methinks. He is just... putting things into perspective.

Although, I don't know Vox. When a woman questions sexuality, sexual prowess, access? Usually that meant that she was interested. Push and shove just a bit and I bet you could bag that gargoyle. Well... I use gargoyle lightly. Gargoyles had limits, didn't eat or poop everywhere, and have some value in the right markets. But... you know what I mean.

Blogger Doom June 14, 2013 2:39 AM

Oh, and I use the term "bag" lightly too.

RACIST!

I'd never call VD for a low blow, as he is a cheap-o martial artist. (boxing has always and ever been for real fighters)

But calling out Mrs. Hayden? Misplaced. She suffers primarily from one thing - age.

Confident though VD may be, he cannot beat age. I say this as a 28 yr old. You can mock a person for many things. Don't mock them for age. It will come for you soon enough.

Anonymous Mudz June 14, 2013 3:43 AM

I've probably said something similiar before, but never hurts to reiterate.

Ms. Hayden may be foolish for any speculative number of reasons, but I do not condone that anyone should attack her because she compares unfavourably to Spacebunnies.

'Feelings' may be an invalid argument, but they do matter in other, more subjective, contexts. Cruelty is not actually a virtue, sometimes it's not sufficiently justified by the humour value.

(You guys have got cruelty down to an art, and I've been cruel through thoughtlessness as well, so it's not like anyone needs to hone their skills in this department.)

Insensitive, I'm cool with, in the course of making a substantive point but this was a deliberated insult. Kind of heartless. Harshness, that's okay too, provided the opponent is made of stern stuff, or it's necessitated in some way.

This doesn't mean I encourage anyone to yield to emotional blackmail, but I do advocate volitionally choosing to be kind instead of cruel. Kindness after all, is a virtue, and cruelty, is not, even if it's funny. Incisiveness is useful, but the difference is that is useful. Don't overreact to 'leftist tactics' so extremely that you et al, just become an unreasonable douche in a completely different way. It is actually true that Jesus did not evaluate people by their mere appearance, for example.

Yes, Spacebunny's a pretty girl (pls buy my story :P), and Ms. Hayden made a foolish, even scurrilous, attempt to attack you on a ridiculous and infantile charge. But I implore you, VD, not to employ Tactics of Regret, unless it's in direct service to an argument. Otherwise you're just kicking around rabbits. Innocent, naive, fluffy little rabbits in little tweed gender-neutral suits.

I submit this as an antithesis. To the extent that people (i.e Vox) are well aware of what they're doing, (as Vox would doubtless assure me regardless), this is to be interpreted as an open emotional appeal. Otherwise, an alarm.

A response is not necessary, as this is not a challenge. Don't overinterpret my comment as indicating I consider this some grave threat to society and reason, I don't even necessarily care that much that you guys say she's ugly (far be it for me to hypocritically suggest people not say what they're thinking). I do think you're enjoying it jeeest a little too much, but I'm expressing opinions, not laws of conduct.

This is basically just a long-winded way of saying 'sheesh, guys, you can be nice sometimes'.

Anonymous VryeDenker June 14, 2013 3:53 AM

If you're going to white knight, at least let the maiden be fair. And a maiden.

Remember, SHE was the one who claimed Vox never met a "real" woman.

Anonymous Mudz June 14, 2013 4:10 AM

I shall White Knight as pleases me, for whomever I wish, though I think the appellation ill suits me. Free will and all that.

It was a patently absurd accusation delivered with all the incendiary power of a wet tissue in a snowstorm. Vox had all the power at his command. I already know his policy, and this is his court where I merely participate, but I advance my own objections nonetheless, as all good courtiers should do (and often do... do... here. Heh. I said doodoo. I rest my case).

You don't need to tell me that. The soccer season just ended and not a moment too soon. I'm already wrestling with the bastard.

This is basically just a long-winded way of saying 'sheesh, guys, you can be nice sometimes'.

And I am, sometimes. But I tend to prefer the philosophy I learned in the dojo, which is "start nothing, finish everything". I don't always manage to live perfectly up to it, but I do try.

There are a lot of SFWA-ites looking for a good reason to get Vox kicked off their mailing list. Does this not provide them with a very good cover reason for doing so? Not, I'm sure, that he cares in the slightest.

There are a lot of SFWA-ites looking for a good reason to get Vox kicked off their mailing list. Does this not provide them with a very good cover reason for doing so?

The board has been discussing that and running it by their lawyers since yesterday. I've made it clear that if they do decide to go for it, I will be demanding a Nebula Award for Best Novel as part of any settlement.

As I mentioned in the SFWA Forum, the amusing thing is that they actually appear to think I'm being difficult now.

What they may lack in ferocity they more than make up for in sheer numbers. By force of majority alone would they try to affect policy and outcome. Lest you think that meaningless of such harmless creatures, ask Capt Kirk if he had any trouble with tribbles.

And just like their literal namesakes, it is necessary to cow these metaphorical lagomorphs occassionally to reduce their population. As such, it has been proven that exposure to predatory animals like wolves has the affect of lowering their numbers.

It is Science.

Don't hate the Science, son.

@ VD

And I am, sometimes. But I tend to prefer the philosophy I learned in the dojo, which is "start nothing, finish everything". I don't always manage to live perfectly up to it, but I do try.

I believe you. Just don't forget that Christianity isn't a dojo. We are called to be soldiers of Christ, but we are called to be light-bearers as well. I don't doubt you know it, but it's valuable to say these things out loud, so we don't forget it.

@ Others

You mistake me if you think I misunderstand the concept of AWCA. It's not that. And I vastly prefer it to things like Jim Hines falling all over himself because 'tarred by association' has 'troublesome connotations' that even google couldn't unravel for him.

In a casual conversation, I wouldn't care that Vox, say, makes a joke about nigger-babies on crack, or baffled lesbians taking fertility tests. Heck, if I took issue with that, I'd be the worst hypocrite in existence. The first thing I said to a girl I just met was 'oh, you're a Jew? Sucks, brosk. You guys were totally the chosen people till you killed Jesus'. To one of my buddies I said 'lol, you're just angry cos your dad's dead.' And I've asked dudes I thought were orphans if they thought their parents loved them less than their natural children.

Cos you know, that's just everyday stuff. I'm just as much an asshole as any dude with a beating heart, if not more, but the worst risk I run is people being offended, not destroyed in their soul. (I mean they say they are, but I don't believe them.)

So, although this is a blog, I think the situation here is a tad more 'professional' in nature when it comes to 'official-like' reponses. (I guess it really depends on how VD sees his blog. I consider it a public announcement board.)

I wasn't calling for 'kindness' in the sense of capitulation to liberals/leftists/rabbits, or exercising their notion of what kind is. Or in the sense that any man or woman or earth can compel you to behave against your inclination. Or that you should take to the field with anything less than a full armament.

Just emphasising that it's not a weakness to show restraint, which has nothing to do with if people think you're compassionate. It includes 'cruel to be kind'. It also includes 'attack the argument, not the person'. And sometimes, just sometimes, it includes not calling old women fat frogs.

Vox could have summed up this whole thing just by throwing up what she said, slapping in a picture of Spacebunny and saying, 'Lol, Rly?'

Because without realising it, this could lead to you giving yourself permission to adopt the same tactics they're using, and the battle is already lost.

We can't convince anyone our way is better if we don't use it ourselves.

Now, I say this, not because Vox has committed a terrible breach of conduct, I mean, it's really no big deal, and he can basically do what he likes. This is a full-page equivalent of 'shit, a bit harsh to that lass, weren't you?'. Heck, if he said 'Ok, so I was feeling cranky today; fuck you.' That'd be a satisfactory resolution in my book.

His Alpha Game blog kind of complicates it, since it's a blog basically dedicated to this kind of thing. I probably wouldn't have minded if it all took place there.

I just know Vox is capable of truly admirable stuff when he chooses to, as are many on this blog, and so I take this opportunity to encourage it.

But you condone that she attacks someone because this someone compares unfavorably to Xander Harris? Do you condone because she was wrong? Or because she is fat?

No. I condone attacking the argument. Nope.

The point being, that it is very easy to exceed her level of childishness. It was an opportunity to let that ol' light shine.

-

Gah. I really need to stay off the net. My minutes are precious to me.
