SF vs science

Shattersnipe would appear to favor a rhetorical approach to the seemingly indisputable observation that not all human population groups are equally civilized:
And there is white-hot anger, so fierce you become the eye within the maelstrom of your own rage, calm as your pulse exceeds the beats of a marathon runner, calm as your fingers grasp and clench, calm as you grip your aggressor’s throat and squeeze.

This last I feel for Theodore Beale.

Recently, I blogged about sexism in the SFWA Bulletin. I wrote that piece as a self-declared comic rant, the tone inspired by anger at men who ultimately meant well, however offensive and outdated their efforts at showing it. I received a lot of support for having done so; but of course, there was a flipside. My anger, said some, was unseemly and unprofessional. My arguments were poorly reasoned. I was preaching to the choir. I was the gendered pejorative of choice. But the thing is, I can shrug that off. I deal out enough criticism that I expect to receive my share in return, and whatever form that pushback takes, it very rarely shocks me. By the standards of women on the internet, in fact, I’m pretty lucky. I’ve received a minimum of rape threats, I rarely get called a cunt, and if some of my detractors are uncivil, then I can usually dish it out in return. I was bullied, harassed, attacked and assaulted enough at school for being forthright, female and unfeminine that written threats just don’t chill me the way they used to. (They still chill me, of course. And I didn’t suffer nearly as much as others. Nonetheless, the comparison stands – and no, this isn’t an invitation to try harder.)

The point being, I have privilege, and that privilege protects me. I’m a middle-class, well-educated, straight white ciswoman with a functional, middle-class white family, and however much the misogyny gets to me at times, I can draw on that privilege – on that firmly entrenched sense of self-worth and the emotional, social and financial safety net which supports it – and fight back. I belong to the second most privileged group of people on the planet, and whatever abuse I still suffer regardless of that, I have the cultural status to counter it and be heard. As an individual, therefore, I’m hard to oppress. I have privilege. I have resilience. I have opinions.

And I have anger....

I feel poisoned even typing that. Sickened. Trembling. I cannot even imagine how Jemisin feels. Nor am I attempting to speak for her. She is, without a doubt, one of the most brilliant women – one of the most brilliant people and writers, period – active in SFF today, and my voice in this matter is not a replacement for hers.

I am speaking because it would be a crime against conscience not to.

I am speaking because a world where men like Theodore Beale are left to speak unchallenged by the weariness of their opponents is not a world I want to live in. I am speaking because my privilege affords me a chance to be heard.

And I am speaking because of the bodily disgust, the rage and hatred and putrescence I feel for members of my own race, both now and throughout history, who speak of savages and lesser beings, of civilisation and the right to kill those outside or perceived to be incapable of it; who speak, as Beale does, as though people of colour are a genetically different, inferior species of human when compared to his Aryan ancestors.

This is my Reconciliation.
The passion of it all just gives you shivers, doesn't it?  It's hard to decide what is the most amusing part of this hysterical "dabacle".  It's a little subtle, perhaps, but I think, in the end, my favorite part is where she declares the "bodily disgust, the rage and hatred and putrescence" she feels for the idea that "people of colour" are "genetically different".
What is so funny about this is that it all goes back to 2005, and a WND column when I pointed out that women don't write much hard science fiction because they have little aptitude or inclination for science.  And now, eight years later, we see a spelling-challenged female SFWA writer who is frothing-at-the-mouth furious at the idea that Africans are a genetically distinct population group, a group that therefore must necessarily be either inferior or superior to other population groups.
In other words, she is a science fiction writer who is deeply and violently offended by science.  This should suffice to explain why science fiction has qualitatively declined over the years.
But we shouldn't be too harsh on her.  After all, she does an excellent job of proving my original point in my response to Ms Jemisin, which is that there can be no reconciliation between the observant and the delusional.  This isn't a challenge to my views, but rather, an exemplary underlining of them.

If Theodore Beale isn’t cast out of the SFWA immediately, then that organisation is worth nothing.

If Black Gate continues to give Theodore Beale a platform, then that publication is worth nothing.

And the ultimate Rabbit sentence:

As members of the SFF community, there is only one acceptable response to Beale, and that is to shun him utterly

I wonder if she feels the same disgust for those who speak of some groups of people as being not quite human, indeed, mere lumps of tissue, and the perceived right to kill them.

She can have you Vox, because she has privilege, she is resilient, and she opines. Yeah, I get all jittery reading her. That is the reason I don't read much Sci-Fi anymore. Having to put up with carp she espouses and the level of good writing in that genre. Keep up your good works and keep the battles fresh!

It's no wonder people like her favor gun control. With the level of self-control she professes, I wouldn't want her having a firearm, either, nor a knife or pointed stick and I'm doubtful about a bunch of bananas.

But she should vote, though, to make political choices that will affect future generations. Because that's not about being rational, it's about caring enough, which she plainly does. So that proves you're wrong, Vox. So there.

Speaking of delusional... in what way has anything Vox ever said gone unchallenged? Except, I don't think that's what she really means. For people like her, "still legally permitted to speak his own opinions in the venue of his choice," "not in jail," and/or otherwise "insufficiently cowed" constitutes "unchallenged."

I am speaking because my privilege affords me a chance to be heard.

At least she isn't demanding to be heard. Yes, her privilege affords her the chance to be heard. She shouldn't be surprised if the people she most wants to listen don't care.

Anonymous Inane Rambler June 14, 2013 1:08 PM

I'm surprised she didn't bring up Stephen Jay Gould in a failed attempt to prove that there is absolutely zero genetic component to race.

Of course, Gould was caught lying in The Mismeasure of Man, and he's been dead for a while now, so even if he was once an authority, he hasn't been for a very long time.

Sociological race may not be entirely correlating with genetic determination of race, but there is certainly a wide degree of correlation. The average African-American has 80% descent from Africa (which does happen to be the most genetically diverse continent in the world.)

The Charlotte Observer once issued a scathing denunciation of Jared Taylor for his views on racial differences, and concluded, "[Y]ou cannot tell someone's race from their DNA."

Shortly after that editorial was published, the Observer ran a story about Charlotte mayor Anthony Foxx, who is black. The headline read, "Foxx learns his African roots." The lede informed us that "DNA test reveals he's descended from Nigeria's Fulani people, a tribe of nomads, herdsmen, warriors."

Of course, there was no follow-up, and no acknowledgment of their blind hypocrisy. You have to laugh.

From conversations with in a business context, to the hyperventilation over guns, to this, there's a compelling argument emerging as to why women cannot be placed in positions of authority, from president down to voter -- and this little ejaculation from a crazy woman is a prime exhibit:

They are as violent as any man; they fetishize violence; they have unrequited lusts for violence and are as frustrated as any pussy hound who can't complete the action. It hit me that this was why, despite their stretching "abuse" to be verbal, psychological, gaze-al, they always circle back to men are the agressors because men are physically bigger: they have small-man syndrome writ large, as they cannot lash out in real life, so they get the gang together and use the violence of government, and then claim themselves as the victim to provide salve for their consciences, because, by redefining culpability, victims can't be culpable, and so she has to be the "second most privileged" so she can claim some aggressor exists to oppress her and keep the victimhood merit badge.

Women like this would have been institutionalized for hysteria by a saner and more vital society that hadn't resigned itself to twilight and death.

That's the thing. It's not intentional. It's just how I happen to think. My original editor at WND once told me that I had a unique gift for pissing people off. Trust me, if it was intentional, I could, and would, keep it going much longer than I do.

Part of the problem is that because I don't get offended very easily, I have to concentrate to avoid offending others. And I seldom concentrate on that when I'm posting here, because, hey, it's just my blog, after all.

Anytime a white person suggests that white women have an important job in raising babies, we are called bigots and all sorts of other exclusionary names.

When is the last time the progressive movement has berated ANY other culture like this for the crime of having children?

Anytime white people think it's important to have white children to continue our culture, we are called bigots, racists, and accused of perpetuating overpopulation.

It is a fact that overpopulation is a Third World problem, not a first world problem. But yet, who do you Progressives berate for the overpopulation problem? Us. You don't berate the third world even for the problems they cause. We are to blame for every problem.

We are the only people you want to restrain.

Yes, of course! The Holy Shun Grenade of Antioch! 'Tis one of the sacred relics CisWoman Guttersnipe carries with its transgedermandered self! CisWoman Guttersnipe! Bring up the Holy Shun Grenade!

CisWoman Guttersnipe:
And Saint Cis-trans-pre-op raised the shun grenade up on high, saying, 'O Diverse One, bless this Thy shun grenade that, with it, Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits in Thy mercy.' And the Diverse One did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals and fruit bats and large chu--

Chief Rabbit:
Skip a bit, CisWoman Guttersnipe(but not in a raciss judgmental way).

CisWoman Guttersnipe:
And the Diverse One spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pen. Then, shalt thou squee to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt squee, and the number of the squeeing shall be three. Four shalt thou not squee, nor either squee thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then, lobbest thou thy Holy Shun Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.'

"You can fake virtue for an audience. You can’t fake it in your own eyes. Your ego is your strictest judge, they run from it. They spend their lives running."

"Do you mean to tell me that you're thinking seriously of building that way, when and if you are an architect?"
"Yes."
"My dear fellow, who will let you?"
"That's not the point. The point is, who will stop me?"
The Dean and Howard Roark

Oh yeah. She feels white-hot fury that Beale merely disagrees with her, even though Beale has actually done nothing to hurt her.

Know what?

Vox, I half-disagree with you on the reason for the dearth of women writing hard science-fiction (Half: I do think that the female brain emphasizes social and the male brain technical skills compared to each other, but that the aptitude curves greatly overlap), and mostly disagree you about the aptitudes of different racial groups (I think that the differences are mostly cultural, and furthermore that American "blacks" -- let alone Latinos -- are not clear examples of distinct racial groups because of extensive interbreeding with Europeans).

But I'm not full of "white-hot" rage at this. I'm not even slightly angry.

I am aware that different people may come to different conclusions about the world: I think the solution is rational discussion and an acceptance that sometimes one can't convince everybody of one's own point of view.

First, trivially, because since DNA codes much of one's appearance (the rest is phenotypical, coming from physical and cultural development), of course it can; second, because nowadays you can tell a lot more than anything as crude as "race" regarding someone's origins from race ...

"Gee, Mom, I'm feeling a little putrescence today, I think I'll stay home from school".

The eye of a maelstrom is the bit at the center not filled with spinning water. It's analogous to the eye of a hurricane.

This was actually the only good point she made, though she didn't realize it. VD's arguments do go unchallenged because people never address the actual arguments he makes. The post referenced in the OP wasn't an actual challenge at all, it was just a mindless, emotional rant designed to get the rabbits to nod their heads in agreement while dismissing VD's argument entirely.

The question I have is are these people intentionally ignoring the substance of the argument or is it a subconscious thing?

Blogger Jordan179 June 14, 2013 4:35 PM

Ah ...

Technically, "gender" is a "social construct." Sex, however, is biologically-determined.

You feel victim to a Leftist word game here -- they replaced "sex" with "gender" as the polite way to answer the question "Mom, what happened to her dingley?", but the two words have slightly different meaning.

Sex is "male/female/whatever" (*), while gender is "masculinity/femininity/whatever." (**) Different cultures and subcultures define the right way to be male or female differently. This is trivially easy to see if one reads any social history.

What the Left tries to deny is that masculinity, femininity etc. are somewhat constrained by biology, specifically by body structure and brain wiring. For instance, men can't give birth; women are on the average smaller and weaker than men, and so forth.

This pisses some people off.

===

(*)
Due to birth defects, some people are born hermaphroditic to varying degrees.

(*) Yes, there's still a "whatever" here. For instance:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Spirit

In fact, since cultural identity is wider than biological identity, there can be "whatevers" that aren't even genetically possible, such as people who culturally switch genders at certain ceremonies!

Anonymous Scintan June 14, 2013 4:35 PM

What's funniest about that comment thread is that the commenters are ganging up on one person, making all sorts of comments which would certainly qualify as hate speech under their own definitions, and thinking that they are doing right because they are part of the herd.

I thought it was hysterical, particularly in light of this little doozy posted at 2:46 pm:

This makes me wonder if part of a future SFWA discussion should include us thinking and discussing hate-speech (and/or attacking another member) as being a criteria for removal of membership.

It should hardly comes as a surprise that a group of people who felt that the word "gender" didn't sufficiently distinguish between male and female would be unable to grok the manifold complexities of the development and disintegration of human civilizations.
They call it "going native" for a reason.
Or, for those that prefer, a cognisized, weaponized, aerosolized Stockholm Syndrome, suitable for framing, from a college or university near you...

Before my head explodes, could someone please explain to me how my "social construct" is constructing another person, if it's only a social construct and not a hard, observable reality? I'm kind of confused.

Ummm...if people "of colour" are not genetically different, then how did they end up a different color?

Did their parents drop them in a paint bucket shortly after birth?

How do people manage to avoid and disbelieve that which is plainly obvious?

"idea that Africans are a genetically distinct population group, a group that therefore must necessarily be either inferior or superior to other population groups.
"

How does it follow that groups must be inferior or superior based on them being different? Are not leopards and St. Bernards genetically different? Why would we say that one is genetically superior to the other? I would just say they evolved under different conditions and have different characteristics.

Leftism is what happens when people become removed from the resources, mechanisms, and infrastructures that go into their continued survival. The twisted mass of crap that passes for their brains cannot fathom that basic survival is not a given, but a constant struggle directly linked to reality and truth.

I agree with her. So many guys in the manosphere especially are so freaking mean. I never understand why. In the last 3 days someone has told me that I am lucky that they don't know where I live or else they would slowly torture my genitals off. A few months ago someone told me I should get raped and die. For what? Why are people prompted to talk like this?

Guys have called me all the following this year:

1. So ugly they can't erect for me (I've gotten a lot of this this year)
2. Grosser looking than roadkill
3. incapable of comprehending reason or freedom etc. because I am a woman.

My list could go on and on.

It's really easy for opponents of the manosphere to characterize the whole thing by the bullying behavior of some of them (and that some is a lot of them, not some small minority). So everything that is said there ends up being dismissed by the mainstream because they feel that there is evidence to claim that statements about inherent racial differences are driven by personal misgivings against members of those races.

My experience with the manosphere is that I am rarely attacked for my non-white race and never attacked for my non-straight sexuality, but I am attacked on a daily basis for my gender. I am often deemed structurally incapable of comprehending complex arguments based on logic or empirical evidence because I have a XX chromosomes. And these attacks tend to be angry and bitter.

I wonder what would happen if one installs a turbocharger between this woman's mouth and hamster wheel to feed pressurised rhetoric back into the system. The faster the wheel spins, the more hot air comes from her mouth, which is in turn used to increase the speed of the hamster. I predict that she keeps steady at around 22PSI for a week before she pops her manifold clean off.

"The point being, I have privilege, and that privilege protects me. "

Yeah, you've got privilege because you're female. We can prove that. But prove you have privilege because you're white.

Is "Shut up,whitey! You jes be rayciss!" being shouted at you every time you open your mouth anecdotal evidence of this "privilege" you speak of? I mean, I understand it gets chicks wet and all but to a man it just seems like sadistic intentional humiliation. We're not into psychologically-depraved sexual deviance, on the whole.

I keep hearing about this "white cisprivilege" or whatever retarded bullshit it is this week, but it's never been proved. And it won't be, because it's an article of faith for leftards. It's as phony as Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth".

Hear that? That's me playing "My Heart Bleeds For You" on the world's tiniest violin just for you because Vox stomped all over your pweshus fee-fee's,you deluded Creationist. Yeah, that's right. YOU'RE the knuckle-dragging anti-science nitwits. If evolution by natural selection exists, then the possibility that we are all exactly the same is only like a zillion to 1. Unless you believe some kind of rainbow-colored Sky Daddy created us all to be exact carbon copies of each other, just with different skin color, for no discernible reason. A proposition that happens NOWHERE else on the globe with any variation in ANY animal or insect species.

"White hot anger!!" GRRRR, I'm so ANGRY that evolution isn't FAIR!

You coddled mush-brained little cunt. You should have had to go to my majority black high school. You would have had this retardation beaten out of you by savages by the end of kindergarten. First thing I learned while being randomly assaulted for my WHITE skin? Life isn't fair. But it could be a lot fairer, without coddled white cunts like this one who see red when confronted by REALITY. Good job,Mom and Dad. Maybe you should have sit this retard down and explained the facts of life to her rather than dosing her up with Ritalin and sticking her in a day care center to be sexually molested and psychologically abused by red-shirted Marxist wacko cult members.

@feministx

"I agree with her."

HUGE,HUGE, surprise,let me tell you.

If a crazy cat lady said "blawwah blerg greshhh..." and then vomited all over herself,I imagine you'd find that a compelling argument as well.

Probably the reason why dudes thought you had no ability to understand freedom, morality, reason, etc, is because you're obviously operating on the Team Woman system and so anytime a woman says anything you're more inclined to agree with that, even if she is manifestly wrong about a vital concept like freedom or truth. You're especially inclined to make this moral, not logical, judgment if the men aren't being idiotically oversensitive in their disagreement but in effect treating the woman in the same way they would treat a man. That's how it is possible to know that it is indeed a moral judgment you are making, rather than a logical one.

If it is impossible for you to approach such subjects from the logical angle, which seems to be the case because you're always approaching them from the emotional or moral angle, then you are inherently "not tall enough to ride this ride".

"A lot of people in the manosphere are mean"...so what? The point is, are they right? If they aren't right, then it doesn't matter that they're mean. If they are right, it wouldn't matter if they were nice, since you're an emotional being that isn't emotionally-mature enough to handle things you don't want to hear,no matter how nicely they are stated.

"What's the point of defending logic and evidence if you're going to be a Bible believer? Water doesn't instantaneously turn into wine."

Proof's in the pudding, babe. That second is a statement of pretty profound ignorance and cultural illiteracy.

And I was raised a feminist. But also an empiricist. Eventually something's got to give.

I will grant that there are some women capable of comprehending complex arguments based on logic and empirical evidence. There is some overlap in the bell curves. The problem is that those women are not the ones getting ahead currently.

And the ones who are are doing so at the expense of both men and women with that capability.

I can turn water into wine by adding evaporated wine dust to water. Me, just a guy. Supposing that an archangel, armed with a multi-function nanite assembler couldn't wander by when His Boss asked him to, and toss in some nanites which would then grab some material from here and there and produce some super-fine hooch is a bit of illogic I don't care to go in for. Or the Sysadmin for Reality V.1.2 AfterFall could have just made a temporary code tweak....

You'd think in the age of SF and computers that miracles would not be that hard to believe in.
