Those dratted hackers

I exchanged a pair of friendly emails with the intrepid book reviewer "Icefog" this morning after my good friends at the NSA provided me with his contact information last night.  "Icefog" explained that his Amazon account had been hacked and he was quite happy to remove the fake reviews that had been posted on Amazon using it.  I'm entirely content to take his explanation at face value, and I would appreciate it if Mr. Kulkis would please remove his four reviews that were posted in response to the now-deleted fake ones.

Well, there you go: the venerable "Hackers Did It!" defense.

Hey it worked for Anthony Wiener...

Hackers R US, a division of Team NSA.

Hey it worked for Anthony Wiener...

I wonder how long it will take for Wiener to claim he was a victim of the NSA as he continues his campaign for mayor of NYC?

Anonymous dh June 17, 2013 1:44 PM

Yes, if I had any ongoing litigation or matter before the courts I would immediately try to get access to that data. It will surely fail, but it will really gum up the works.

What are the odds that Guccifer, or someone like him works for the NSA?

You have friends at the NSA?!

Blogger Markku June 17, 2013 3:00 PM

Friends don't let friends have friends in the NSA!

These are the same spineless little maggots that are going to kick your ass in real life.

These people's minds and souls have been hacked.

You have friends at the NSA?!

I have friends in all sorts of unusual places.

Anonymous VD June 17, 2013 3:21 PM

If I wanted the name posted, I would have posted it, Anonagain. And no, "Icefog" does not appear to be affiliated with the SFWA. There is some reason to believe his account may have been accessed by someone close to him rather than properly "hacked", but the distinction is irrelevant here. The point is that it should not necessarily be assumed that he was the one actually posting the "reviews".

The fake reviews have been removed. I'm content with that.

You don't have to know someone at the NSA, it may be enough to know someone with high level clearance who interacts with NSA, a list which runs from the military through the alphabet soup of defense agencies that most people do not know even exist.

Has Amazon considered a system that requires would-be reviewers to pass an author-generated book quiz before posting a review about a given book?

Now I can see malicious fake reviewers going to B&N madly flipping pages for answers so they can post on their iphones, becoming engrossed and then actually purchasing the book.

Anonymous Anonagain June 17, 2013 4:33 PM

OK. But you wiped out the best part of my comment - my "haka" creation.

"Hey it worked for Anthony Wiener..."

He didn't erect that, someone else did!

"I have friends in all sorts of unusual places."

While I'm sure that part is true, I'm highly skeptical that NSA employees have friends.

Sort of OT: my copy of Summa arrived today! If I were to judge a book by its cover as some of your reviewers apparently do, I'd say it's fantastic. I'll get to it in a while and put a review up before long.

Loved the Puddleglum reference a few posts back, by the way. I appreciate when others seem to understand what Lewis was really trying to say.

Lol!

I know a guy who's uncle works for them. What I'd do to be a fly on the wall during their family convos!

Whose

Blogger LP 999/Eliza June 17, 2013 10:19 PM

Good.

I was fully expecting another reason such as this one, amazon has experienced some fake reviews about some shoes I purchased. But I said nothing here since shoes and books are not exactly meaningful to the thread. I would keep those reviews/comments just in case.

Blogger LP 999/Eliza June 17, 2013 10:19 PM

Wait...interesting. Hacked by whom? FF2; fascinating fallout

You'd likely hear nothing. I have an older cousin who worked for the CIA, and he never once told us even the most mundane detail about his work.

I hax0red the salt shaker and replaced it with sugar. Boy did their french fries taste like hax0ring.

All your condiments are belong to us.

Blogger James Higham June 18, 2013 1:28 AM

Never ends, does it?

Anonymous daddynichol June 18, 2013 7:43 AM

Also sorta OT, but I received my copy of Summa Elvetica as well. It's good to have the book in hand. I read it on-line, but the hard copy pleases the eye (and mind).

Anonymous VD June 18, 2013 8:03 AM

If you happen to also have ATOB, how do the two spines match? Did that work?

Blogger TontoBubbaGoldstein June 18, 2013 8:44 AM

All your condiments are belong to us.

All your condiment are belong to us.

Don't let it happen again.

Anonymous Ajax June 18, 2013 6:37 PM

The spines match, except on my copy of Summa the imprinted title on the book itself is not centered vertically.

Anonymous Idle H@x0Rz June 18, 2013 8:04 PM

Don't let it happen again.

What Tonto didn't know is I also hax0red the ketchup with mustard. The bottle was opaque plastic, so none were the wiser to the hax0ring. It was not the right time to go public. Your fries are hax0red, your hot dogs are hax0red. Even your eggs and sandwiches are hax0red.

Consequences at dinner will never be the same.
