Torturing vibrants

Good intentions or not, that's what collegiate affirmative action does:
Mismatch theory, most recently expounded by Richard Sander and Stuart Taylor, is the most powerful critique of affirmative action yet developed, demonstrating empirically that students admitted to academic environments for which they are ill prepared learn less, and are less likely to pursue rigorous majors, than had they been enrolled in schools where their peers shared their level of academic preparation.

But the Times story conveys a subtler point as well: Racial preferences are not just ill advised, they are positively sadistic. Only the preening self-regard of University of California administrators and faculty is served by such an admissions travesty. Preference practitioners are willing to set their “beneficiaries” up to fail and to subject them to possible emotional distress, simply so that the preference dispensers can look out upon their “diverse” realm and know that they are morally superior to the rest of society.
It's really quite ugly.  I saw this sort of thing with regards to around one-third of my black teammates.  Some were perfectly qualified for the university's academics and did well, others probably should have been somewhere that covered material at a slower pace.  But there were some who shouldn't have been permitted within ten miles of the campus, as they had absolutely no business being there and it was immediately obvious to everyone who tried to help them.

"His writing often didn’t make sense. He struggled to comprehend the readings for [College Writing] and think critically about the text..... 'He would revise his papers and each time he would turn his work back in having complicated it. The paper would be full of words he thought were academic, writing the way he thought a college student should write, using big words he didn’t have command of.'"

There is nothing more obvious, or pathetic, than a five-cent mind attempting to make use of a fifty-cent word. The problem is that this sort of "assistance" will probably not be abandoned so long as the official mantra remains "education is the answer".  The idea that many individuals are simply ineducable beyond certain levels is just too frightening to be contemplated by everyone who subscribes to the mantra.

Educate the ineducable. No improvements.
Educate the ineducable again. Still no improvements.
Educate the ineducable the umpteenth time. Still nothing happens.

Wait, are there problems with inevitable long term debt for such an "educational" rat hole? Something about "I owe my soul to the "company' store...".
"Pell" grants are fine I suppose, spread that expense around to the 50%'s "fair" share, but those damned Rhodes Scholorships
MUST be racis', what with the disparate impact of the "impartial" merit evaluation process.(Kinda' like the Nobel Prize?)
Hope the new trend in blind, post-academic evaluation, doesn't reflect badly on any institutions that MAY have been exploiting "mismatch" for the gub'mint "edumacation" money,...you know...for the children.

I remember hearing some years ago that lowering the grade of papers because they were written in Ebonics is racist. Supposedly Ebonics was a language that should have parity of esteem with English. Disparate impact, you know.

**Supposedly Ebonics was a language that should have parity of esteem with English. Disparate impact, you know.**

Depends. If a language has the same traits as English, such as regular rules of grammar and spelling, distinguishing between tenses of time, etc, then it is just as valid as English. Does Ebonics meet that standard?

I remember that not offering Ebonics majors along with English majors was also racist. Supposedly the grammar would then be researched and defined by these new Ebonics majors.

I'm almost certain that it wasn't some overt satire site like The Onion, but I cannot be certain that it wasn't bullshit for purposes of covert subversion.

Anonymous Myrddin August 28, 2013 4:22 AM

Valid for what?

Communicating with someone who knows Ebonics? Sure, if it can say what you are trying to say as well. More valid if it expresses it better.

Communicating in a college of English speakers? Not unless you are taking an Ebonics class.

Demonstrating a decent Education? I believe the standard set there is Latin, Greek, French, and German.

Winning points with the geek squad? The classical languages work alright. Klingon or Sindarin is better. Ebonics not so much.

Outside of logic, validity is contingent on purpose.

Watch that thing on MUTE, and it's hideous.

English grammar is a low hurdle to clear, compared with that of many other languages.

Valid for what?

Valid to be one of the major options, and valid for writing your college and university papers in. After all, if the reader doesn't know Ebonics, he's probably a racist with lots of white privilege.

Anonymous Anonymous August 28, 2013 4:53 AM

Honestly, the insistence on some people (in the US) that their children be taught in Ebonics or in Spanish, regardless of how valid a language either one might be is not really doing their children any favors in the long run, because 98% of the rest of the country speaks English, and not having their children learn English is going to be a permanent handicap for them throughout their entire lives.

Anonymous zen0 August 28, 2013 4:54 AM

Ebonics is a corruption of English, so can't possibly considered equal to English.

Might as well declare igPay atinLay as valid as English.

Harruumph.

I asked my inner negro about that, he said that it's just because of white privilege, and that argument is basically capitulating to it. It is exactly for this reason that we DO need parity of esteem for Ebonics.

He didn't say it in these exact words, though.

English grammar is a low hurdle to clear, compared with that of many other languages.

Indeed. English not only borrows from other languages with great rapacity, it follows them down dark alleyways and mugs them.

It is a great and magnificent trading language, but the idea that it is somehow pristine is risible.

Boohoohoo. Is anybody here actually sad for the poor, poor minorities forced by AA to suffer through classes too difficult for them? I would have killed to be allowed in to a prestigious school I wasn't "qualified" for. Maybe I would have sunk, maybe swum, but it would've been a risk I'd take. I imagine those fine young vibrant AA scholars think the same thing; it's not like anybody puts a gun to their heads.

Eh, it's debatable. But not worth debating, really. The point of that old quip is to link "language" status to a sovereign state, not literally an army or navy. It mentions the army and navy and not a flag or territory to emphasize that it's not qualities like grammar or vocabulary but rather Caesar's support that does it.

Another question I would ask is that even if there is such a language as 'Ebonics', with a valid grammatical structure, etc, is this: Are most blacks who claim to be doing so actually speaking this language of 'Ebonics', or are they really speaking non-grammatical, non-literate gibberish that simply sounds superficially like Ebonics.

The point of AA, like sodomite marriage, is to destroy the old, imperialist, white man's language, his culture and his presumed superiority. Then liberals will rule and everyone will be happy. I think it only right to add that this applies to white students, as well. High school doesn't prepare you for any rigors other than the rigors of goodthink, and so, having never met a serious challenge, the college student becomes discouraged and majors in finger-painting or white-men-are-evil studies.

Anonymous Anonymous August 28, 2013 8:11 AM

Ok, here is what I think is a fair test for the validity of Ebonics as a language. Take a few random pages out of a book written in standard English with at least a high school reading level, have some 'Ebonics' expert translate the pages from English into Ebonics. THEN, have an entirely different 'Ebonics' expert, without consulting with the first expert or otherwise being given any information, translate what the first translator did from 'Ebonics' back into English.

If 'Ebonics' is a valid language, capable of conveying concepts as well as other languages, little or no meaning should be lost or altered in the English document resulting from translating from English to 'Ebonics' to English again.

If those who advocate Ebonics are unable or unwilling to successfully perform this test on several random pages from books written at at least a high school reading level, or start making excuses why performing such a test is 'racist' or some such nonsense, then it is not an adequate language.

This is the evil of "social promotion". The brain train has left and they are stranded. They could have been held back, and emerge late from school, but completely functional, or at least way better and have a chance.

Toby, it's worse than "educate the ineducable." They're taking students who are probably perfectly educable and sending them to schools they can't handle (often because their primary and secondary school educations were inferior)-- then the politicians and bureacrats pat themselves on the back for this, while the victims of their "help" are wasting their college years in the wrong schools. That's what Vox means by "sadism." How would you like to be sent to a prestige school you weren't prepared for and set up to fail?

Blogger Jordan179 August 28, 2013 10:34 AM

Is anybody here actually sad for the poor, poor minorities forced by AA to suffer through classes too difficult for them?

I am. It's like living the nightmare in which you come into class and there's a major test for which you haven't studied, one you didn't even know was coming. These are, after all, generally kids who are trying to do well in school, not thugs. They deserve to be treated honestly when their applications are considered.

Instead, they know within the first semester that they are out of their intellectual or educational depth (some may just have been badly-educated, perhaps by the Ebonics-fancier some posters mentioned. They wind up taking some nonsense degree like Ethnic or Women's Studies, they know that they're just saying whatever the professors want to pass, they know that they're frauds, and when they come out of college with these "degrees" every potential employer knows that they're frauds as well.

What did they do to deserve this? They didn't set up their primary and secondary schools, and they were probably the kids being teased for "acting white" (to have done well enough to be considered for high-class colleges even given affirmative action). They didn't set up the affirmative action programs. Most of them never learned enough to realize that affirmative action would hurt them. They're innocents, and they earned better than a lifetime of fraud.

Imagine going into a school and telling all the kids that you can't get a good job and raise a family in today's society unless you can dunk a basketball. Then to the 5'2" kid, you say, "I know you can do it, if you just work hard enough." So he jumps rope and works on his leaping ability for hours every day for years, until he's able to dunk with ease, so you give him his diploma and a hearty slap on the back and send him out in the world.

Then he goes to apply for his first great job and looks up at the rim they have for testing new applicants -- and realizes he'd been dunking on an 8-foot rim all along.

Of course, no sane person would say anyone can learn to dunk, no matter how short. But that's no crazier than saying anyone can learn to conjugate verbs in a foreign language or do calculus.

It isn't just the students who had the problems either. The teachers were also forced to deal with kids who were in absolutely no way prepared for college in any form.

It helped me realize one thing as a parent though. I made sure my kids took care of business in regards to their education so they would not have to deal with this situation.

Indeed, though I suspect it serves it's purpose when two five-cent minds (or even a five-cent mind talking to a ten center) are in converstaion. Neither one knows that the fifty cent words mean, so they don't dare call each other's bluffs.

Yup, plain as day. I wouldn't be surprised if she wasn't a convenient pawn in the Syrian false flag operation. Two birds, one stoned...that sort of thing.

Torturing vibrants
...
There is nothing more obvious, or pathetic, than a five-cent mind attempting to make use of a fifty-cent word.

Snicker.

Thomas Sowell has been complaining about this for years.

Preference practitioners are willing to set their “beneficiaries” up to fail and to subject them to possible emotional distress, simply so that the preference dispensers can look out upon their “diverse” realm and know that they are morally superior to the rest of society.

This is the left in a nut shell. Filled with pride and an absolute conviction in their ideological BS, they will literally watch people die, or even kill with their own hands, if it means they can prance and preen and tell the world how wonderful they are.

Re vibrants, apparently those two youths in Spokane are claiming they were buying cocaine from the 88 year old veteran.

regular rules of grammar and spelling, distinguishing between tenses of time, etc, then it is just as valid as English. Does Ebonics meet that standard?

Ebonics is English spoken by people too stupid to do basic verb conjugation. Its major 'features' are eliminating auxiliary verbs, e.g. 'He is the man' becomes simply 'He da man', without 'is'. Let's see, utter lack of conjugation, as in (surprise) everything from a first person perspective, e.g. I play, you play, he play, she play, etc, etc. Serial mispronunciation of English words.

Tenses are regularly mangled. In any language, the 3 basic verbs are to be, to have, to do. They can't even properly conjugate them.

Ebonics is simply mangled English.

And on the other end of the colour spectrum, I give you textspeak:

LOL u kiddin me OMG u gais cnt rite English

Be it by either path, your beloved language will be reduced to grunting, pointing, and hooting while hopping up and down. As well it should; it will match what is left of your civilisation.

They are, of course, lying. But even if they had been buying cocaine from Shorty, this would not be extenuating circumstances for murder. I'm guessing that they are too stupid to realize that even if he'd cheated them, this would not constitute legal "provocation" or even "extenuation," because ...

... it would have been an illegal transaction. The law will not construct a contract for an illegal transaction.

Such filth is not fit for human consumption. But sex sells and it was nothing short of pornographic. It's as if we are on the Titantic and the elites are eyeing the lifeboats while carrying on as if the ship isn't listing to port.

An actual, honest program to really educate this country would require disregarding all racism, sexism, as well as anti-racism and feminism. A child who has an IQ of 150 has an IQ of 150, regardless of how cute or fair or politically correct that might be, and they have that IQ regardless of whether other children of their gender and race have an average IQ of 130 or of 70. This means that that child specifically, and not necessarily (though not necessarily not, depending on their individual intelligence) should have a lot of resources devoted to their education regardless of how 'unfair' this might be.

TJIC/28Aug13@7:08 AM,

Seeing that one & the very popular 'extricate' used instead of extract or remove always simultaneously cracks me up & makes me shake my head at the ignorance of language those who use such pseudo-erudition display. The part that increasingly worries me is that those who behave that way are in positions of power & thus influence the remainder of the populace.

Little-considered here re effects of sending undersmart diversities to elite colleges/programs: A) all the competent whites and north Asians that wrongly get kept out, forever, and B) the professionals that will never be created in those fields. Re the latter, remember this next time you have to wait wait wait to see a second-rate doctor, can't find a reasonable competent engineer/architect/tradesman in a timely fashion, etc., etc.

If Ebonics were a real language, it could competently express this statement, while making crystal clear that thermodynamics were the topic:

"The entropy of a closed system tends to remain constant, or to increase."

Blogger Kristophr August 29, 2013 11:21 AM

Libtards cannot admit that intelligence has a genetic component.

Add to this affirmative action, and you end up with a college classroom where all of the obvious idiots are black. Idiotic whites were never even considered for admission.

No amount of education can fix stupid.

If Ebonics were a real language,...

Even if it couldn't, following your logic, the language of some reclusive Amazonian tribe wouldn't be a real language either. And in any case, a physicist conversant in AAVE would just use SAE.

That could as easily (and more likely) be descriptive of a homie's cavity-ridden teeth, STD-riddled reproductive system, or termite-ridden hovel as opposed to the general comment about thermodynamics which I spelled out. Fail.

In terms of understanding the universe, the mouth-sounds of the Amazonians in question would be closer to the grunts/screeches/howls of angered baboons and rap "musicians" (but I repeat myself) than to an accurate, full depiction of a fundamental of professional physics. Fail again.

Sander and Taylor believe it is possible to achieve the goal of racial equality in higher education, but they argue that alternative policies—such as full public disclosure of all preferential admission policies, a focused commitment to improving socioeconomic diversity on campuses, outreach to minority communities, and a renewed focus on K-12 schooling—will go farther in achieving that goal than preferences.

FACE PALM!

Luke, your assertion that your test can distinguish between real languages and makey-upey ones is idiotic. Was ancient Greek a real language?
