Welcome to the real world

You cretinous, foolish young woman:
Readers will recall that Andria has an “Honors BA in Social Justice and Peace Studies” and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Gender Studies. So . . . how’s that going?

“I have a honors BA and I’m defending my MA thesis in two weeks. I am also apply for jobs and I can only find stuff in the service industry. I applied for a Hotel Front Desk Clerk job today.

My degrees mean NOTHING.

I am at the end of my rope.“
And she just figured this out NOW?  She has a degree in "Social Justice and Peace Studies".  She will soon have a second degree in "Gender Studies".  She's very lucky the service industry will consider hiring anyone with a pulse, because any employer looking at those degrees has to knows she is a walking, talking, sexual harassment and/or discrimination lawsuit waiting to happen.

In fact, a Gender Studies degree actually has negative value, given that credentialed feminists are considerably more likely to cause disruption in the workplace.

It's bad enough to acquire garbage degrees in economic boom times.  It's even worse to do so in the middle of a five-year depression.

I wonder if it's legal to discriminate against someone on the basis of degrees like this. I could see someone who would normally be fine with hiring a qualified woman or minority going 'Anyone who has a degree in african-american or women's studies will not be eligible.'

Boy, you'd look forward to her being your work-mate: Ms. Hons BA in in bein' a Bitch and a Masters in Mean, looking down on all the poor white trash who unlike her exalted self deserve to be stuck in a dead-end job.

Nothing says "good morale on the shop floor" like a snob who's steamed all day about the "the propagation of heteropatriarchal crap" and things being "given a pass" when intolerance is obviously the proper response.

She's very lucky the service industry will consider hiring anyone with a pulse, because any employer looking at those degrees has to knows she is a walking, talking, sexual harassment and/or discrimination lawsuit waiting to happen.

Gotta pay that college debt somehow.

And if the shop gets closed and everybody else loses their jobs: collateral damage, baby.

My word. What a classic airhead. But that's what the universities have been cultivating lo! these many moons. There are all these grants and federal subsidies, you see, and regulations that go along with them. Besides, promoting vagina worship and ranting about the Evil Dead White Male Capitalist Patriarchy is a lot easier than the dissemination of genuine knowledge.

I am grateful that my education predated nearly all of this madness...and I mourn for young Americans who will never know anything like it.

ROFLMAO!!!!

She has a BA in "Social Justice and Peace Studies?" What the heck does that even mean? It sounds to me as if she's been trained to whine about social injustice and war, which is kind of useless to an employer. And then she caps it off with going for MA in "Gender Studies," which is essentially telegraphing to anyone reading her resume that she's wandering around looking for an excuse to sue anyone who looks at her funny.

See, now I feel good about getting a BA in History. It's just a generic college degree, but at least I wasn't basically telling prospective bosses that I would come in to try to bring down their businesses!

What would you major in these days, assuming your employer needs a degree but doesn't specify which degree?

I've got a degree and I'm not looking for work, but when I glance at the help wanted section of the local rag, a lot of employers will ask for at least a BA/BS but do not specify a major, or the ad will say "Bachelor's degree preferred." A BA in Peace Studies fits the bill, but says nothing about the job at hand.

I know the Bachelor's is being used to screen in place of IQ testing, but it has exceeded the limits of stupidity at this point that a college degree is now required to man a desk at a hotel or file papers.

I sometimes think about going to my local CC to get an AA or a certificate in something useful, like accounting or programming. I'm not even sure that is worth it, though.

Blogger Remo August 31, 2013 7:11 AM

She skipped a step. She is supposed to have a brief internship at "Cosmo" or some other fashionable New York city based trash magazine for feminists. She could also be a lobbyist or staffer for the Democratic party. After riding the cock carousel HARD during her college and volunteer years she should then meet and choose a beta shlub, with a trust fund and Engineering degree. Then, with great fanfare, she should announce that she has decided to stay at home and be mom despite the massive damage the lack of her presence will mean to the working world.

Once the child support paymen...er "baby" is born she will then then divorce to discover herself to further fanfare. After a few years she'll write a book along the lines of Eat, Pray, Cats.... er Love which will speak of the Haitian drug dealer she met and found true love with.

I also want comment on her writing but see Krul said stuff.

Blogger Cranberry August 31, 2013 7:27 AM

Well, it was a tweet so "apply" fits better than "applying" in the limited string. She still needed two tweets to finish her thought.

Succinct speech is not prized in Gender Studies programs.

Further, her tweet illustrates how microblogging and texting degrades English.

If you're going to get a four year degree, get it in chemical or petroleum engineering.

Accounting certificates are worthless. If you want to go that route, either study machining or go to truck driver school.

This is the modern equivalent of "Typhoid Mary". She is not merely unpleasant or annoying. She is a friggin menace. She is a plague carrier.

Here to to hoping she finds a job...like desk clerk at a hotel....owned by the Italian mafia, so that the first time she starts to ply her trade, she ends up in a black bag in a dumpster or under yards of concrete at a construction site. Do not take this person lightly.

Certain labor unions would be glad to sponsor her brand of mayhem and, truthfully, that would be much better than if she is discovered and adopted by one of the bloodsucking Jewish law firms that specialize in frivolous torts. She can always fake a mobility handicap, so she can fight for handicapped accessibility and reserved parking spaces.

I had rather that she skip all that and go for her doctorate instead.

are no longer attracting folks with a reasonable expectation of paying for such an "education" in a timely manner, nor gub'mint "grants" for
research (done by ones students surfing the web for cut and paste) involving frequent travel to exotic locations to "attend" awareness orgies themed "Recent studies show...".

Of course, such lettered "social" expertise MIGHT make a good "foundation" for a good paying career in asbestos/lead paint/spent atomic fuel rod removal, packaging, transportation, sequestration, and disposal. Maybe "infrastructure" protective coating application and maintenance, with a peripheral pursuit of practical evaluation of hazardous conditions worker safety equipment.

Chemical Engineering is what you want. Otherwise, I personally am getting a degree in Process Technology and Control. It's a two year degree at a junior college that nets the students 24.00/hr internships after one year of study. They transition to permanent positions.

Anonymous Harsh August 31, 2013 11:17 AM

Well, I majored in Asian studies so I guess that's not much better. But I was lucky enough and had the aptitude to get into the nascent Web development field in the 90s, so I've done OK for myself. The degree has not really helped at all though. I kind of think of my college days as a four-year, hundred grand party. But at least I got to see Japan and China.

My college was rife with the type like the women in this article. We had a similar peace studies major and one called social relations or something like that. It would be interesting to see how many of my classmates who chose those majors have moved into different career fields. I suspect a very large percentage.

OpenID cailcorishev August 31, 2013 11:18 AM

Her biggest problem is that she's white. Doesn't she know that those nonsense degrees and the make-work jobs that follow them weren't created for the likes of her? She'd better hurry and get a sex change, or at least become a butch lesbian -- something to boost her minority status. Just being a woman's not gonna cut it in these tough times.

Anonymous Jack Amok August 31, 2013 12:08 PM

Not just the workplace. I imagine men she may want to date and or marry react to those degrees like Dracula to garlic. They're even negative value as Mrs. degrees. This woman has sabotaged most every decent option for her future.

What would you major in these days, assuming your employer needs a degree but doesn't specify which degree?

Read Capitan Capitalism's book Worthless. But most any sort of Engineering is always a good degree (avoid Environmental Engineering however. Cappy Cap explains why).

This is what happens when you combine no intellectual curiosity with a short time preference...

Ironic, isn't it? A bachelor's degree is supposed to show the bearer has a long enough time preference to make it through 4 years of school, but this dunce goes and ruins it by getting a degree that showed zero forethought.

Anonymous Jill August 31, 2013 12:20 PM

By comparison, my English/Spanish degrees are desirable because potential employers believe I can communicate in two widely spoken/written languages. This may not actually be true, but...I wonder what kind of job she had in mind when she obtained those degrees. Volunteer work? Being a do-it-yourself kind of person, it seems I attract those kinds, too. Many of my friends with higher degrees have gone into part-time jobs to pad their start-up businesses.

East Asian Studies

Those "Studies" majors are such cakewalks that I picked mine up by accident. I was filling out some university forms halfway through my junior year when I realized that if I took one Asian lit class, I'd pick up a second major. It turned out that the four classes I'd taken in Japan all counted towards it.

On Degrees

Make sure you check out all the imbedded links. Make special note of the Peter Schiff youtube, and the 1000+ comments.

I don't necessarily agree with the politics of the author. However, note that one can become a political prisoner, whether on the left or right. The moral here, as Sutton has exposited, there is neither. It is us against them. Also, just because you made it to Jinghong (yes that is a real place), doesn't mean MOSSAD can't target you. Oh, BTW his degree is in Molecular Physics. A former captain in the IDF, with nuclear weapons security clearance.

Finally, on career and choices, the most sage advice comes from Jim Rogers. By all means, if you truly want and love a life tracking the stars and planets, then do get a degree in astronomy. If you are a Christian, then this is probably going to be the most important astronomy lesson in your entire life. Here, Dr. Daniel Jackson shows Dr. Maj. Samantha Carter, just who got to the peak of the mountain first...

Something in the White House, probably, or maybe over at the U.N.

There are plenty of non-profits and left-wing think tanks, politically driven foundations, etc. that will give her a job.

The money for those jobs isn't as plentiful as it used to be, though. That's the whole point: for decades now, people like her have been sailing through college on these frivolous majors and then going and getting plush desk jobs at PACs, NGOs, and government offices. She just assumed she'd do the same, and now the job offers aren't flying at her because a million other nitwits had the same plan, and many of them outrank her in the victim hierarchy.

A quick perusal through this young woman's tweets reveals the irony impairment that is highly characteristic of feminists. She denounces criticism of Miley Cyrus as "heteropatriarchal crap," but then attempts to make an emotional appeal to one of her detractors by pointing out that she's someone's daughter, and wouldn't this guy be upset if someone was being this mean to his daughter? ("I'm just a wittle giiiirl, be nice to meeee, Daddee!") She also, oddly, tried to play the Canadian card to deflect criticism from American "Neo-Cons" ("Hey, I'm just over here in Canada minding my own business, what do you want with little ol' me?"), though she sees no reason why she shouldn't comment publicly on American politics and culture.

It means she's has a degree in Marxism but probably hasn't made it all the way through Das Kapital.

The real problem for this young woman and other like her isn't that employers don't value these kinds of crap degrees. They never did. The problem is the usual next step in the career ladder has been made untenable by the recession. That is, since there are no jobs out there for new lawyers it no longer makes sense to take on more debt for a JD.

Up until 2009 once you had your JD you could find a well-compensated job in the nonprofit sector suing people who actually produce things. And the best part was since most of these nonprofits are ultimately funded by tax dollars the people you were suing in furtherance of your political agenda were paying your salary.

Indeed.

When my apartment complex's resident redneck, loud and aggressively drunk dude was given his 5 week notice for failure to pay rent, he thought someone was going to step up and save his sorry butt. No such luck (for him). He was rather frantic and bitter in his last week and he threw out a lot of his stuff, smashing his tools, plates, furniture and what not. Then he threw out a lot of clothes and stuff. At that time, I took out my trash and saw a bunch of hangers. I needed hangers. I couldn't fish them out, so I went and got my sturdy chair and climbed in. The clothes were not ruined, so I looked and most were my size. I ended up with a $400 leather jacket and a $200 pair of Timberline boots.

The redneck came by while I was dumpster diving and, boy, was HE irate. He tried to intimidate me, but I simply asked him if it was worth beating up the cancer patient (and going to jail) over. I also told him he was an idiot for not pawning some of the stuff or even giving away to the poor so SOMEONE could use it. But he was too bitter and stupid to make lemonade out of his lemons.

Dave - US Supreme Court Case - State of California vs Greenberg

There IS no reasonable expectation of privacy as regards trash. Once an item has been placed in a trash receptacle, it is thereafter open to inspection and/or removal by ANYONE. (Including passers by, animals, children, and your grandmother).

Basically, this is a workaround of the 4th amendment, it gives the police the right to look for evidence in your trash without a warrant, by allowing anyone, and everyone, the right to look in your trash.

@Stg58/Animal Mother

Athor Pel and I have discussed this at length over dinner, and via private chat (Steam). It is as AP says, "understanding symbols." Characters in novels and films are symbols of people in real life. Guess who Dr. Heiser represents? Again, a reading of his novel, and coming sequel is the best comprehension.

Maj. Carter thinks her acumen is superior to all. She finds out the hard way, that her's et al is not superior to that of the linguist. Especially when that linguist also knows a bit of astronomy, and is equally the theologian as he is the linguist.

You can talk to Gordon Duff yourself if you like about Stargate, X-Files, Fringe, etc. You will probably come to a brutal disagreement on the note of Nephilim and fallen angels, and have more agreement with Dr. Walter Bishop. Duff cannot divorce himself completely from an exclusive natural realm. If you believe in the supernatural, and cannot accept that it is all explained via the natural, then you are delusional and in need of medication.

He also thinks Heiser is a moron, and his resume is superior to Heiser's. I seriously doubt he would step up to a debate, anymore than Sitchin has been challenged. Duff thinks he can explain the Atrahasis, Tablet I better than anyone else, I say go ahead. Just because you may well have MAJIC access, doesn't make you the smartest person in the room. Heiser has ripped the Collins Elite to shreds. Still, Heiser is nowhere near perfect on other matters himself.

Anonymous fritz August 31, 2013 10:53 PM

Fritz, I could live with that name. "Fritz! Ya, [burp] over here!"

I was thinking further about characters, symbols, and "people in real life." Ask Marilyn Barnewall about Lee Wanta. Ask her if divine intervention played a part. Ask Lee Wanta.

You ponder this Lee Wanta. Name another person that you can think of, that is legally (that is, a court has ruled so) a trillionaire [1]. More than that, he is so without stealing anyone elses money. That is what I would call a financial genius, trumping the likes of Rogers, Buffett, Ichan, name what you will.

What he made in profits for the American people, would pay the national debt 3x over. We could be sitting on ~20 trillion in surpluses. We have not even factored in ~300 trillion in claw back. Yes, I know. Staggering to contemplate. Ask Barnewall again. Maybe that is why the majority of us sit on our asses twiddling our thumbs. Still too many of us with our thumbs up our asses.

Further pondering. It doesn't matter what school you go to. Whatever the best legitimate degree you can earn. Unless you are a billionaire, your purchasing power will continue to dwindle. Again ask Barnewall and Wanta.

[1] Interesting that Google will not legitimately define that for us. No dictionary will. Wired Magazine thinks Gates will be our first. Boy, are they full of it. Gates, if thinks he will be the one, is even more full of it. Others think it is/will be this Kamal Ashnawi character. Delusional people they are. They really got "most of us" pretty well conditioned. Haven't they ?

I am also apply for jobs

The young lady has managed a formidable accomplishment. She has managed to earn 2 degrees (one with honors; one at the postgraduate level) in 3 separate subjects and still cannot reliably construct grammatical sentences in her native language.

Brava, Signorina.

(It must be because she possesses superior quantitative skills. Her economic decisions provide ample evidence of her mastery there.)

Fritz,

I didn't watch the video, just saw the title on YouTube. No offense, but it looks like a clip of Ancient Aliens. I don't have time to sit through a video about astral whatever.

Probably about the same thing as a head nurse who told me I had 'poor communication skills'

i once had a supervisor tell me, "... and the worst thing is, bob, that you're not logical".

i responded incredulously, "i'm illogical?" ( i've been accused of a lot of things in my day but never anything close to that )

Opal retorted, "no bob, i didn't say you were illogical, i said you're not logical."

to which i turned to the HumRes bimbo and said in amazement, "yes, that's what illogical means."

at which point the HumRes bimbo calmed the waters by saying, "now bob, there's no need for you to have an attitude like that."

it was then and there that i knew that i was going to be fired. so much for my career at Bayer corp. didn't matter much, they wound up laying off and shutting down pretty much everything they had in northern Indiana anyways. it was only a matter of time.

Bob: Well, the head nurse who told me I had 'poor communication skills', when I asked her to specify as to WHY, rather than give me the real reason (namely, that I was very good at communicating, and they either didn't understand what I had to say, or didn't want to hear it), gave me a number of evasive and nonsensical answers, and I finally got it out of her that apparently she and several other nurses were trying to communicate to me using BODY LANGUAGE.

Yup. The same thing your dog uses, when it wags it's tail or bares it's teeth.

Mind you (to paraphrase the Jaffe), I'm not entirely certain that it's appropriate for medical professionals, in a work environment that often requires the communication of extremely accurate information very quickly, to be attempting to communicate with their employees on a cognitive level indistinguishable from animals, but perhaps I am simply old fashioned.

Ah, yes, Ann, I have had similar problems with the NTs myself, at times. Why yes, as someone who never gets less than an A- on those online Autie-Aspie quizzes, I do believe you're One of Us. I must ask Vox at his other blog how to game the aspichix; there's one in my congregation I have my eye on. Unfortunately, she gave up the booze years ago, and I'm nowhere near ready to quit yet. That might be an obstacle.

Ann,

Like I said, he is (was?) an idiot. He didn't want anyone to get any use out of his stuff if he couldn't have it - not even himself (by selling/pawning it). A selfish moronic person.

As for other adventures in DD, I'm told that, if you cruise the dumpsters around SLU and Wash U around the time school lets out, that you can find lots of gems that the rich kids are dumping rather than take with them.

Hmmm...there is one possible exception to what should be the rule on degress in gender studies, _don't hire one; if someone took such a degree and never achieved more than a 2.0 in any related course, with occasional F's to demonstrate moral and intellectual propriety, then one might consider hiring such a person.

Sprach von teufelhunden is baaaaaaack. We missed you, man. It's been too coherent around here lately.

No colleges in the town where I live, but I used to get a lot of interesting stuff out of the giant dumpster that they rented for the Jr. High school a block from my house at the end of the year. The kids would throw out rulers, crayons, notebooks, calculators, etc. Most of which had hardly even been used, a 200 page notebook with only a few pages written on is a pretty good find, tear out the pages with writing and it's practically new.

I'm an INTP. Which is considered to be a decidedly *masculine* personality type, not so much because the traits associated with being an INTP are masculine (INTP's are mad scientists, not chest-beaters), but rather because almost all people with the INTP personality are men.

I'm not sure who the 'NT' women are who you are having trouble with, but from what I know, it's likely that they are INTJ's. One of the more annoying traits of INTJ's is that they think that everyone else either should be an INTJ, or else be trying (and trying successfully) to BECOME an INTJ, and failure to do so means that they are STUPID.

Guess the #1 way to insult an INTP? Tell them they are stupid. And it doesn't help that typically, INTP's are smarter than INTJ's. Simply less productive. About the only INTJ I get along with is actually a man, and smarter than I am.

But I do get in the damndest arguments with INTJ's at times, several years ago I had some of them tell me that because I preferred the way white men looked to the way men of certain other races looked, and therefore would probably never consider having sex with men of those other races, I was 'denying' men of those other races their 'right' to breed with me. Well, whatever, nobody has a right to breed with me without my consent, regardless of what my reasons are.

What exactly are these 'gender studies' anyways? From what people here are saying, I can only assume that they are neither biological nor speculative in nature, so do not involve studying the genetic or biological traits of human genders, or alternate animal genders (such as those animals which are hermaphroditic, can change their gender, or have their gender determined by temperature rather than genetics) or possible other genders that might exist in alien species.

I really can't imagine what else would be worth studying about gender. If it's about how some gender should be oppressed, or has been oppressed, or ought to have physical traits that it doesn't have, then the whole subject is more lost in fantasy than my former guidance counselor claims that I am.

... have them launch it at an Israeli kindergarten...

Wait. Why would liberals take offense to that? Isn't Israel still a few kids short of their fair share?
