Navy Yard shooting

"A Navy spokesman says four have been killed, eight wounded in shooting at the Washington Navy Yard. #BREAKING: 4 killed and 8 injured. One shooter down #NavyYardShooting #Navy #CNICHQ"

"We urge citizens to listen to the authorities and follow directions...."
-  unnamed White House official

Well, that's certainly a creepy response.

UPDATE: "officials said six people were killed and as many as 10 were wounded, including a law enforcement officer."

UPDATE 2: "THIRTEEN DEAD IN NAVY YARD SHOOTING".  Dead includes Aaron Alexis, the shooter.

That's actually what I would EXPECT a decent government who we should trust to say in a crisis situation.

The problems is that our government has proven time and again that we should view every single pronouncement with grave suspicion and with an eye that "never let a crisis go to waste" is their overiding motive.

And what would constitute a non creepy response? "Assemble an Armed Republican Posse and storm the Navy Yard", perhaps?

I would love to see the WH say: "This is a matter for the Navy [or the police?]. No comment."

See how well that works? In fact, I don't know why (a) people constantly seek WH comment on stuff that has no Federal or executive role, and (b) the WH seeks to comment on things which aren't it's business.

After a few weeks the press will get the message:

Reporter: "News today is that Syrians are dying in gas attacks. What is the WH's position on what happens next?"

WH: "Syria is a client state of Russia. Ask Putin."
Reporter: "Is that it?"
WH: "Yes."

~

Reporter: "What is the WH's comment on the mass shooting in Colorado?"
WH: "No comment."
Reporter: "Don't you wish to express sympathy to victim's families?"
WH: "No. It would be hollow. We don't know them personally. I am sure their families are sad but strangers giving them condolences is weird."

Anonymous White House September 16, 2013 11:30 AM

"How long before we get the lone nut gunman with the magic bullet narrative? "

Easy to explain. The lone shooter used one of those "military machine guns" ... an AR-15 ... a magical super-gun that clearly isn't fit for civilian ownership.

Anonymous Stg58/Animal Mother September 16, 2013 11:30 AM

The comments from the Times site are awesome:

"This story is a lie. Everyone knows that guns are all but impossible to own legally in DC. Since gun control is infallible, this could not have happened. It certainly could not have been perpetrated by some inner city thug, because, as we all know, they vote Democrat, and are therefore supporters of 'no-nonsense gun control'. Another lie designed to make gun control look ineffective, and Obama voters look like criminals."

"Putin has been a called in absentia to handle things while Obama finishes up the last three holes."

"I'm sure the call will go out to ban navy yards"

A man brandishing an assault rifle, a shotgun and a handgun opened fire Monday inside a building at the Washington Navy Yard — killing at least four people and wounding at least seven more, including two police officers, authorities said.

I'll bet that even on a military installation he did not have an "assault rifle". I have to believe the media is lying. If they told the truth it would be by accident.

If anyone asks me if I own or posses an AR-15 I can truthfully state no. No where on any firearm I own is "AR-15" stamped, written or engraved, same with the manuals. Same if they ask me about an "assault rifle". Ignorant questions get answers befitting the ignorant.

@Josh,

"Would the navy yard, being a federal property and all, happen to be a gun free zone?"

It's not that it's federal, most military bases don't allow personal firearms and the professional ones are locked in an armory. Man, I bet the Marines at 8th & I up the road were itching to get into it though. Most of them have been in combat, even if they are currently ceremonial. Hell, leaving there in July, I saw guys in uniform with their M-16s crossing the road casually, so I know they are well-armed within that area.

I expected this yesterday on account of how dangerous lightning is now - any lightning strikes within 100 miles of a school will call for the immediate evacuation of said school until the evil lightning can be controlled with government intervention. I had to bring my car into the barracks compound and my escort, I asked him about what he did before this duty because I could see a purple heart. I was told to shut up during our active shooter drill.

Why? Good question.

For pointing out a few measures we could do besides "Locking the Door".

Like putting file cabinets against the inward-opening door.

And arming ourselves with hard and heavy objects inside of said room, including a broom handle and trash cans.

But we were supposed to be absolutely silent the entire time until we were given the all-clear.

Never mind I pointed out that if we HAD an actual "active shooter" that got a weapon past security, he (oops, "he/she", don't want to be sexist) would almost certainly already BE in the area when he/she opened fire and no one would get to the "safe room" in time to save anyone anyway.

Actually, what would almost certainly happen in such an instance is that the first person to get to that room would close & lock the door to save their own ass anyway.

Me? I ain't going into that damn room with the sheep. I'll take my chances, grab my heavy-ass stapler as a club, listen for gunshots, run the other way and hit the closest fire exit. History shows most of the active shooters can't shoot worth a damn anyway.

I'll almost 100% be fine. There will be plenty of lard-asses to be bullet sponges behind me.

Due to recent cases of kids drawing guns with crayons or pointing their fingers and saying "bang" being treated as "brandishing a firearm", apparently we can no longer determine with any degree of reasonable certainty what "brandishing" might mean in this case. /s

Omar Grant, a civilian worker at the Navy Yard said he was on the first floor of the five-story atrium when he heard the first shot. “At first I didn’t know if someone dropped something,” Mr Grant said. “It echoes in an atrium.”
Then he heard the other shots, Mr. Grant said.
“It was unmistakable,” he said. “Nobody had dropped anything. Those were shots.”

This is a little bit perplexing. Why don't these mass shooters use suppressors? There are inexpensive models available for all major handguns and the AR-15. Granted, an AR-15 suppressor isn't going to be silent, but it will certainly buy you more time and lower the alert level substantially.

Actually, I've got my "Active Shooter" handbook handy - it's what they hand out here at the Fort where I work for DoD, Civilians and Contractors.

The steps are (after the Intro and a non-profile profile): 1) Evacuate, 2) Hide out (call the cops) and 3) as a last resort, take action against the shooter. There's some online training everybody has to do annually called ATFP1 (antiterrorism, force protection level 1) training. It's got a lot more scenarios, but basically run away, hide out or if nothing else, then confront somehow. There's some goofy things about whether to be prone on the floor or crouching...so you gotta stick your head up to see what the shooter is doing before you figure out what you're going to do next. Of course that's the Army version. The Airforce version says submit, it's only gay if you push back.

This is stupid.

Most of the Muslim insurgency in Thailand is localized in the south. Thai politics is incredibly intricate, and most of the populations are behind King Bhumibol Adulyadej. That man is an absolute PRO at wielding power behind the scenes. He's one of the best I have ever seen. He's been sick lately though and his wife Sirkikit is being a bitch.

Maybe it's a...

random disgruntled guy
false flag
engineered disruption of the media cycle
terror strike of opportunity
gun demonizer

or maybe something else. Maybe skynet made the bullets and they have now turned on us.

The thing is, civilization collapse is self-replicating. Whether it is from the government or a man or from a foreign barbaric plot. Whether it is homegrown violence, imported, or fabricated out of whole cloth, it - by design - is uncivil.

Because if you aren't going to do anything about it (because you can't, because you won't, it really doesn't matter) and no one else will, it is erosion unchecked. It is another brick pulled from the wall. It is another gap that we don't fill.

Someone is going to benefit from it, but it won't be civilization. Does it really matter who gets the credit? Isn't the play itself the thing wherein one captures the conscience of the king?

It doesn't really matter if John Brown shot those people, or if it was Wilson's policies that did them in, or if Aleister Crowley or the Masons have the secret plans. It doesn't matter if lone angry men are dangerous in a world with guns, or if it was a puppet show with the strings on us, does it?

The comment on who was active in slavery in Poland

A good source is the book Jews in Poland: A Documentary History: The Rise of Jews as a Nation from Congressus Judaicus in Poland to the Knesset in Israel by Iwo Cyprian Pogonowski (Hippocrene Books, New York, 1998)

Here are some passages from it on the medieval slave trade:

“The situation of Jews within the Arab Empire was normalized in A.D. 637 by the decree of Omar I. Jews in Islam were recognized as “tolerated infidels.” Most medieval Jews resided in Spain. Jewish medieval merchants were known as “Radanites.” They included western European Jews from France and Germany, as well as those from Arab Spain.

The term “Radanites” was derived from the name of the Arab-Christian border along the river Rhone (in Latin Rodanus) because of an intense slave trade which was conducted across it. The slaves were castrated in Verdun, Venice, and Lyon and sold by Jewish Radanite slave-traders to the Arabs of Spain. This Jewish slave trade also included girls and small boys who were properly indoctrinated in order to be used later by Arab rulers as bodyguards, slave soldiers and bureaucrats.

An alternate origin of the name “Radanite” was a Persian word for those who “knew the way.” This explanation was related to the leading role of Jewish merchants in trade after the fall of the Roman Empire. From the 7th century to mid-10th century Radanites controlled the trade which encompassed Europe, North Africa, and southern Asia including China. It was a period when Hebrew was the only language of world trade.”

[...]

“Arab Spain was the main market for slaves (eunuchs, girls, and young boys). Some slaves were sold as far away as China, which also bought furs, beaver skins, silk, and weapons. Exports from China to Europe included cinnamon, spices, musk, and camphor. The capital of Khazaria, Itil, was an important Jewish trading center. Jewish merchants played an important role in international trade after the fall of the Roman Empire. For two centuries they made Hebrew the only language of world commerce. Slavery, which was the foundation of the Roman economy, was important in the Arab Empire in which the Jews became the main merchants, trading with the infidels and bringing European slaves to Islam.”

[...]

“Jews in service of Boleslaus the Great minted his coins and inscribed on them the name of the Polish sovereign with Hebrew letters. Besides such highly valued craftsmen there were active in Poland Jewish slave-traders. Ever since the time when the economy of Rome was based on slavery the slave trade has continued. In the 11th century the main slave market was in Arab Spain, then the most civilized country in Europe. The Catholic Church fought against slavery and this fight is documented in the treatise “Infelix Aurum” by the first patron saint of Poland, and since A.D. 997 the first bishop of Gdansk, Adalbert or Wojciech (voy-chekh). In the struggle against the slave trade the family of St. Adalbert lost the Czech throne in Prague to their opponents supported by Jewish slave traders. One of 18 sculptures on the 1170 bronze door made for the cathedral of Gniezno depicted the scene of redeeming manacled Christian slaves by a Polish bishop from Jewish merchants in the presence of the son of King Boleslaus the Great, the second formally crowned King of Poland, Mieszko II (990-1034).”

Skeptic OT, false, typical Catholic bigotry. The main source of Muslim slaves in Medieval times was the Slavic nations, and the dealers were the nobility. Jews in Medieval Christendom were restricted to money lending, tailoring, goldsmithing etc. Christian White slavery was built on the same foundation as later Black slavery ... their fellows selling them as chattel.

So another Chris Dorner? Will we get one every six months now? Is the message submit and obey or the scary Black man will get you?
