Rebelling against academic tyranny

A graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison rejects the university's right to subject him to mandatory re-education sessions. It's encouraging to note that more and more people are becoming inured to being labeled by the Left and are no longer bothering to engage in the popular conservative appeasement dance of "but I'm not, I'm really not!"

    Dear Graduate Director Prof. Kantrowitz,

Please forgive this sudden e-mail. I am writing to you today about the “diversity” training that new teaching assistants (TAs) are required to undergo. In keeping with the spirit of the Wisconsin Idea, I am also blind-copying on this e-mail several journalistic outlets and state government officials, because the taxpayers who support this university deserve to know how their money is being spent.

As you are probably aware, all new TAs in the History Department are required to attend one orientation session, two TA training sessions, and two diversity sessions. Yesterday (Friday, September 20th), we new TAs attended the first of the diversity sessions. To be quite blunt, I was appalled. What we were given, under the rubric of “diversity,” was an avalanche of insinuations, outright accusations, and suffocating political indoctrination (or, as some of the worksheets revealingly put it, “re-education”) entirely unbecoming a university of our stature.

Students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and students at probably every other public institution of higher education in this country, have long since grown accustomed to incessant leftism. It is in the very air that we breathe. Bascom Hill, for example, is roped off and the university is shut down so that Barack Obama (D), Mark Pocan (D), and Tammy Baldwin (D) can deliver campaign speeches before election day. (The university kindly helped direct student traffic to these campaign events by sending out a mass e-mail encouraging the student body to go to the Barack Obama for President website and click “I’m In for Barack!” in order to attend.) Marxist diatribes denouncing Christianity, Christians, the United States, and conservatives (I am happy to provide as many examples of this as might be required) are assigned as serious scholarship in seminars. The Teaching Assistants Association (TAA)–which sent out mass e-mails, using History Department list-servs, during the attempt to recall Governor Scott Walker, accusing Gov. Walker of, among other things, being “Nero”–is allowed to address TA and graduate student sessions as a “non-partisan organization”. The History Department sponsors a leftist political rally, along with the Socialist Party of Wisconsin, and advertises for the rally via a departmental e-mail (sent, one presumes, using state computers by employees drawing salaries from a state institution). In short, this university finds it convenient to pretend that it is an apolitical entity, but one need not be particularly astute to perceive that the Madison campus is little more than a think tank for the hard left. Even those who wholeheartedly support this political agenda might in all candor admit that the contours of the leftism here are somewhat less than subtle.

At the “diversity” training yesterday, though, even this fig leaf of apoliticism was discarded. In an utterly unprofessional way, the overriding presumption of the session was that the people whom the History Department has chosen to employ as teaching assistants are probably racists. In true “diversity” style, the language in which the presentation was couched was marbled with words like “inclusive”, “respect”, and “justice”. But the tone was unmistakably accusatory and radical. Our facilitator spoke openly of politicizing her classrooms in order to right (take revenge for?) past wrongs. We opened the session with chapter-and-verse quotes from diversity theorists who rehearsed the same tired “power and privilege” cant that so dominates seminar readings and official university hand-wringing over unmet race quotas. Indeed, one mild-mannered Korean woman yesterday felt compelled to insist that she wasn’t a racist. I never imagined that she was, but the atmosphere of the meeting had been so poisoned that even we traditional quarries of the diversity Furies were forced to share our collective guilt with those from continents far across the wine-dark sea.

It is hardly surprising that any of us hectorees would feel thusly. For example, in one of the handouts that our facilitator asked us to read (“Detour-Spotting: for white anti-racists,” by joan olsson [sic]), we learned things like, “As white infants we were fed a pabulum of racist propaganda,” “…there was no escaping the daily racist propaganda,” and, perhaps most even-handed of all, “Racism continues in the name of all white people.” Perhaps the Korean woman did not read carefully enough to realize that only white people (all of them, in fact) are racist. Nevertheless, in a manner stunningly redolent of “self-criticism” during the Cultural Revolution in communist China, the implication of the entire session was that everyone was suspect, and everyone had some explaining to do.

You have always been very kind to me, Prof. Kantrowitz, so it pains me to ask you this, but is this really what the History Department thinks of me? Is this what you think of me? I am not sure who selected the readings or crafted the itinerary for the diversity session, but, as they must have done so with the full sanction of the History Department, one can only conclude that the Department agrees with such wild accusations, and supports them. Am I to understand that this is how the white people who work in this Department are viewed? If so, I cannot help but wonder why in the world the Department hired any of us in the first place. Would not anyone be better?

There is one further issue. At the end of yesterday’s diversity “re-education,” we were told that our next session would include a presentation on “Trans Students”. At that coming session, according to the handout we were given, we will learn how to let students ‘choose their own pronouns’, how to correct other students who mistakenly use the wrong pronouns, and how to ask people which pronouns they prefer (“I use the pronouns he/him/his. I want to make sure I address you correctly. What pronouns do you use?”). Also on the agenda for next week are “important trans struggles, as well as those of the intersexed and other gender-variant communities,” “stand[ing] up to the rules of gender,” and a very helpful glossary of related terms and acronyms, to wit: “Trans”: for those who “identify along the gender-variant spectrum,” and “Genderqueer”: “for those who consider their gender outside the binary gender system”. I hasten to reiterate that I am quoting from diversity handouts; I am not making any of this up.

Please allow me to be quite frank. My job, which I love, is to teach students Japanese history. This week, for example, I have been busy explaining the intricacies of the Genpei War (1180-1185), during which time Japan underwent a transition from an earlier, imperial-rule system under regents and cloistered emperors to a medieval, feudal system run by warriors and estate managers. It is an honor and a great joy to teach students the history of Japan. I take my job very seriously, and I look forward to coming to work each day.

It is most certainly not my job, though, to cheer along anyone, student or otherwise, in their psychological confusion. I am not in graduate school to learn how to encourage poor souls in their sexual experimentation, nor am I receiving generous stipends of taxpayer monies from the good people of the Great State of Wisconsin to play along with fantasies or accommodate public cross-dressing. To all and sundry alike I explicate, as best I can, such things as the clash between the Taira and the Minamoto, the rise of the Kamakura shogunate, and the decline of the imperial house in twelfth-century Japan. Everyone is welcome in my classroom, but, whether directly or indirectly, I will not implicate myself in my students’ fetishes, whatever those might be. What they do on their own time is their business; I will not be a party to it. I am exercising my right here to say, “Enough is enough.” One grows used to being thought a snarling racist–after all, others’ opinions are not my affair–but one draws the line at assisting students in their private proclivities. That is a bridge too far, and one that I, at least, will not cross.

I regret that this leaves us in an awkward situation. After having been accused of virulent racism and, now, assured that I will next learn how to parse the taxonomy of “Genderqueers”, I am afraid that I will disappoint those who expect me to attend any further diversity sessions. When a Virginia-based research firm came to campus a couple of years ago to present findings from their study of campus diversity, then-Diversity Officer Damon Williams sent a gaggle of shouting, sign-waving undergraduates to the meeting, disrupting the proceedings so badly that the meeting was cancelled. In a final break with such so-called “diversity”, I will not be storming your office or shouting into a megaphone outside your window. Instead, I respectfully inform you hereby that I am disinclined to join in any more mandatory radicalism. I have, thank God, many more important things to do. I also request that diversity training be made optional for all TAs, effective immediately. In my humble opinion, neither the Department nor the university has any right to subject anyone to such intellectual tyranny.

Thank you for your patience in reading this long e-mail.

    Sincerely,

    Jason Morgan

Well sure it's persuasive, but he's a racist. So who cares what he has to say anyway?

Anonymous Anti-Democracy Activist September 28, 2013 5:09 AM

I'm sure this won't affect his career in any way. Because, you know, liberals are completely against blacklisting people for their political beliefs. McCarthy did that, and he was a very bad man, just like Hitler. Liberals would never, ever do those kinds of things.

Jason Morgan, you fucking genderqueer-phobe.

It's people like you that make this world A TERRIBLE PLACE TO LIVE IN for those outside of the BINARY SYSTEM. Probably up to an average of 7.236 people a year in the United States suffer BECAUSE OF YOU.

I'm pretty sure the department will agree with his statement that "anyone would be better". There has to be a gender-challenged Somali around who is fluent in Japanese history.

In all seriousness, the takeaway is this: Where it is in your power to do so, do not have the slightest hesitation about oppressing leftists. They are either at your feet or at your throat. They interpret any attempt to be reasonable or fair to them as weakness they can exploit, and they will never feel any necessity to reciprocate. Where allowed into the halls of power, they will take over, and slam the door of inclusion behind them. They have no principles, only ideology, and will abandon every one of what they have claimed as their most deeply-held principles (pacifism, free speech, opposition to police/surveillance states, "power to the people") when it increases their power to do so.

If you believe otherwise, you are a fool, and you will end up with their boot stamped on your face - forever.

Clearly he should be banned from the campus because such a WAR LOVER may, in an attempt to protect his WHITE PRIVILIGE and defend HETERONORMATIVITY, cause distress to the non-gisgendered non-priviliged by expressing his HOMOPHOBIC, RACIST, WAR-LOVING, HETERONORMATIVE views.

Because racism.

A graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

Dude, it is UWM. That was your first mistake. What were you thinking enrolling in a social sciences department in Wisconsin while trying to keep your balls intact? You might as well have stapled some pork chops to your nut sack then ran around the Hungry Hungry Hipbones at the local Anorexia Support Group.

Serious, I can't wait till these baby boomer academics just die from Hepatitis C and LSD flashbacks. Thanks to the internet we can just go around them now for Japanese history.

Speaking of which...

The Genpei War (1180-1185) is what ended the Heian Period (794-1185), the last period of classical Japan. The Heian is when the masterpiece The Tale of Genji was written by (Lady) Murasaki Shikibu. The aristocrats and imperial court could not run the country very well anymore, so you had the switching over to that feudal military system with the daimyos and samurai. The Taira Clan was defeated by the Minamoto Clan.

As such, Minamoto no Yoritomo became the first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate period (1192 - 1333). This is the time period in which you had the Mongol Invasions of Japan. This is where the typhoons wiped their ships out, leading to the term "kamikaze" or divine wind.

That reminds me of the storms wiping out the Spanish Armada from King Phillip II trying to invade England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. "God blew, and they were scattered."

The shoguns were in power up until 1868, ending with the Meiji Restoration, which is the beginning of Modern Japan.

The amount of courage and societal awareness in this guy is astounding. Especially if he is a young TA (around 25-27). He is fighting against the entranched mammoth with the few weapons people like him have left and doing it quite effectively.

Anyone can bitch and moan online or to friends, but to stand up in the face of all this confused evil, knowing full well his career could be ruined over time and reasonably, even masterfully laying out his points gives me hope. There is just enough undercurrent of subtle "jewy legalese" mixed with "i'm terribly offended but willing to be reasonable" to give him cover while he rails against their stupidity and vileness, and tells them to blow off with their seminars and brainwashing.

Moldbug believes the only solution for the right is to utterly abdicate until it all crumbles down or you can assume power through the requisite overwhelming force (physical or otherwise). To fight a constant losing battle is both futile and destructive to your own cause. I agree for the most part, but I can't help but think that guys like this will rise to the top and show us the way to throw these clowns off their perch.

Jason, your e mail is well thought out and in the great tradition of the United States, You are allowed to disent. But that does not mean that there will not be a consequence for you. The consequence will be craftly delivered and meant to teach you, and by proxy, a lesson to all others. You will need to find an attorney to help you going forward. The fact that you have an attorney will change everything. When you look back at this incident, you will be surprised the number of people who were your friends, that were acutally not. They were using you to achieve a goal. Be safe....

Admirable. This isn't the first letter I've read regarding the "shocking" discovery that indoctrination occurs on college campuses. It is the reason an organization like FIRE was created.

I'm more a proponent of defunding. The academic professors can be as marxist, communists, Baal worshiping as they crave but can do so on their own dime. As long as the practitioners know their funding is secure they will continue undeterred.

I would submit Governor Scott Walker's meager Act 10 reform of public union collective bargaining as a current example of funding sources. Though it doesn't directly address indoctrination issues it does demonstrate how transformative funding affects the academic landscape. ie: Teachers unions.

I am not Vox but they have not actually released the report, all they have done is to release a summary. The actual report is not released until Monday, that way they can have the whole weekend to put out propaganda and by the time the put out the actual report it will be old news and anyone who objects can be ignored

""""Disclaimer: The Summary for Policymakers will be released on Friday, 27 September 2013. The accepted Final Draft of the full Working Group I report, comprising the Technical Summary, 14 Chapters and three Annexes, will be released online in unedited form on Monday 30 September""""

http://ipcc.ch/report/ar5/wg1/

Also they are not releasing the final version of the report until January 2014. And you notice that there are “adjustments for changes for consistency with the Summary for Policymakers”. You would think that they would adjust the Summary for Policymakers to match up with the actual report, but instead they admit that they are going to adjust the actual report to match up with the summary. Isn’t that the opposite of what should be done. It looks like they have decided on a policy and are adjusting the report to match up with it.

“”””Following copy-editing, layout, final checks for errors, and adjustments for changes for consistency with the Summary for Policymakers, it will be published online in January 2014 (tbc) and in book form by Cambridge University Press a few months later.

Some people don't know what sick leave is really for so they write letters. For some reason when I worked for the feds I always came down with the stomach flu or some other 24 hour virus. Never wrote a letter to anyone.

The odd thing is that many people who objected to the diversity stuff got mad at me because I never attended most and they did. It always tickled me how ignorant they were of the rules that they could use to protect them from the rules they newly invented.

I was really sick too, you can't prove I wasn't either.

It's no coincidence that the rise in college costs and the rise of progressive nonsense that led to this person's letter were the result of cheap money flooding the coffers of these colleges.

It's going to be fun watching the results when that bubble bursts. Who's going to get fired? The professor in the engineering department that has a useful skill to teach yet has the gall to commit wrongthink? Or will they do the smart thing and fire the bureaucrat in charge of feminist lesbian inuit studies?

The University of Wisconsin-Madison ain't known as "The Berkley of the Midwest" for nothin". I was employed as a graphic artist for the University of Wisconsin Press (a non-profit publisher of books by professors for professors) marketing department. The African-American Studies line needed a new logo. So I drew a silhouette of a black person and added it to some other element to create a logo. My supervisor has a problem with it. The silhouette clearly shows curly hair and large lips, and I was informed that my drawing was racist. He was right. I was racist and didn't even know it because I'm white, Christian, and grew up in the Ozarks. lol So I asked him if he would prefer straight hair and patrician features. He glared at me and told me to just tone down the hair and the lips.

I had to chuckle at Jason's mention of people protesting every little thing with signs and megaphones. The leftists there I swear carry signs and megaphones in their backpacks to be ready at any time. "I protest, therefore I am."

Jason will be dealt with by the University. I wish him well, and I join him in saying, "I will not comply."

No he's not. I'm glad to see he knows what's going on. And his email is a very well written testimony that can be used to inform others. But he's not fighting effectively. He's not fighting at all. He is merely complaining and hoping someone notices.

At best his email will be ignored. At worst he will simply be let go and used as an example to oppress others. He needed to...

* Find an attorney.
* Stop attending all classes with the explicit claim to the university of extreme depression without saying the cause at first.
* After a few weeks of being "unable to function due to depression," file a lawsuit claiming emotional stress and damages from the repeat accusations of racism.
* Seek at least a few million in damages.
* Bonus points for whipping up the Korean woman...or any other attendee...into a frenzy to the point that she really is depressed, then angry over the accusations in those classes, and can join the lawsuit or start her own.

What does the left do? They sue if you so much as look at one of them funny. A leftist is like a child who starts screaming, crying, and making stuff up whenever he doesn't get his way.

Guess what? It works. Why do you think so many corporations have "diversity training" when it is an obvious waste of time and money? If a "diversity consultant" or even a mere employee suggests it and they do not, they are guaranteed that some "oppressed minority" employee will manufacture an incident and a lawsuit.

Heck, Jesse Jackson can get a donation from any corporation in America simply by calling them and saying "I hope you don't have a problem with racism in your company."

It may be disgusting and cowardly to us, but sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.

Anti-Democracy Activist - Where it is in your power to do so, do not have the slightest hesitation about oppressing leftists.

This. A thousand times this. There are people you can and should be reasonable and fair with. And then there's the left.

This is an example of what has changed (and hardened) my attitude towards jews. When I see how they proliferate in business, 'rights advocacy' groups such as the SPLC and academia despite being such a small minority numerically and yet a large majority of them hold and espouse hard left policies (ex. though I don't have the stats at hand, I think it's safe to say that quite a bit over 50% of jews in America voted not only once but twice for 0bama).
If jews in America wish to act like a serious enemy to America then it's only proper to treat them as such.
Makes me go ''hmm, maybe the Germans did indeed have a reason to do what they did''

A few thoughts...as someone who recently finished grad school at UW-Madison:

First, the "diversity training" is actually something that was demanded by the teaching assistants' union over a decade ago. Before that, there was no such training. But the teaching assistants bargained to force the university to offer and require such training. At one time, a raise from first-year TA to "experienced" TA was dependent on a) having a year or two of teaching experience and b) having finished the diversity training.

Second, the diversity has been beefed up in recent years. When I went through it about a decade ago, it was a joke. The "training" consisted of about three hours of listening to some chump from human resources talk about all the idiotic complaints he'd seen during his years, everything from TAs sleeping with a student in the class (and the whole class knowing about it and demanding A's because of how the TA had shown blatant favoritism) to a professor accosting Asian female students, telling them that the size of his manhood was particularly suited for Asians. Then, we were supposed to discuss the appropriateness of such actions.

Of course, at UW-Madison, which does not have any prohibition on relationships with students, these were real questions. But all the grad students regarded the training as a joke.

Most grad students still do consider the training an annoying joke (in part because most are already so left-wing that they don't need the preaching to the choir), but the administrators have upped their game, in no small part because it's no longer some no-name from human resources running things. Now the university has a vice-chancellor of diversity who has a whole department of people to organize programming like this. These people are all highly trained themselves in left-wing indoctrination. The university has held faculty salaries largely flat over the past decade. Administrators who do leftist programming like this are what universities now spend their money on instead. It's hard to believe, but universities are actually becoming more leftist. Faculty were already left-wing, but they weren't indoctrinating students enough. Now, there are administrators in student life, student housing, and scattered everywhere else who are basically little more than left-wing activists. This is hardly unique to Wisconsin. At most universities, non-teaching staff outnumber faculty by about 10-1. If the position has been added in the last 10-20 years (and many of these administrative positions are relatively new), odds are high that it is something to do with diversity initiatives.

Third, it is telling that this diversity training is even still required. The teaching assistants' union is now effectively defunct, operating as an informal body that no longer bargains contracts with the state ever since Governor Scott Walker drove a silver spike through the heart of public-sector unions in Wisconsin. The university didn't want to offer this training back when the union demanded it because doing so would cost money. Now, even though the teaching assistants' contract is more or less set unilaterally by the university, they've not only kept the diversity training, but expanded it. This says a lot about how far the pendulum has swung at universities like Madison in the past decade or so. Money is no object if the left-wing agenda is being served.

Tikkun olam. "Repair the world".

So I started looking into it. The first hit on google, seems to be teaching site by Jews for Jews:

Which led me to this:

I don't have time right now to pull quotes to pique interest, but I highly recommend people look over this. I'm still trying to parse it.

Sorry about the links. a href tags aren't going through for some reason.

Some people don't know what sick leave is really for so they write letters. For some reason when I worked for the feds I always came down with the stomach flu or some other 24 hour virus. Never wrote a letter to anyone.

That would be a nice option, except that it's not available to TAs at UW-Madison. The diversity training sessions are offered at several dates, and TAs are required to attend one round of sessions. If they don't, they won't receive teaching appointments in future semesters. Either attend sometime during the fall semester, or you won't be working in the spring or anytime after that.

While the TA pay is pretty crappy (about $17,000 per year for most TAs at Madison), the health insurance (a "cadillac" state plan that covers virtually everything with minimal co-pays) and tuition remission are huge benefits. Tuition alone is worth more than $30,000 a year, so this grad student is risking a lot if he refuses to attend and loses out on teaching appointments from here on. The cost is such that unless a grad student is independently wealthy, which I never met a grad student at Madison who was, the diversity training is virtually compulsory. You can skip today's, but you'll have to attend next week's instead. If you don't, you'll be costing yourself at least $45,000 a year, and more if you have any health care expenses.

I think one of the Tikkun issues had a subtitle for an article called " Hitler's Christians". That might be a clue phone as to the bent of this rag.

Thise articles on Jewish learning say that this social justice concept fully wedded itself into Judaism mainstream after their expulsion from Spain in 1492. It then says it went international in the 19th century. This is hardly a winger website saying this. It was the top link on google for the subject, and the magazine doesn't seem to argue much.

castricv: "Moldbug believes the only solution for the right is to utterly abdicate until it all crumbles down or you can assume power through the requisite overwhelming force (physical or otherwise)."

Moldbug also believes that the establishment manned by people like Prof. Kantrowitz is best described as a "Cathedral" with "bishops" in "unaccountable conclaves" and in which active institutions such as the New York Times are best described as passive "stained glass windows".

He's had some success in getting people to use that "Cathedral" label too, though it's deceptive.

His advice to the right to abdicate utterly till such time as the left vanishes away of its own accord reeks of ethnic self-interest.

Please remember: mass immigration plus forced integration is genocide, and white genocide is happening very fast. Time is against whites, who need to push the correct terminology and ideas every day. Abdication, a defeatist attitude mixed with unjustified intellectual or spiritual smugness, and confusing and deceptive terminology - these things are death for us.

Back on topic: Jason Morgan's email was wholly admirable, as was his decision to distribute it to several journalistic outlets and state government officials. Punch back twice as hard!

This poor young man, I hope, has not brought the world down on himself. Playing hookie and missing the clown performance is one thing but insisting that everyone should do the same thing, is quite another. This will be seen as counter-revolutionary, maybe even reactionary.

I suspect this young TA will soon have a meeting in the Dean's Office, attended by the usual UNQUESTIONABLE authorities, who will all give testimony.....not to what this young man has done, but to what he might do if given the chance or what adverse effect he might have on the students in his classes and the irreparable harm he will do to our favorite royal pets. Don't look for the Dean to be old wise kindly master who will rise above all of this. The Dean is equally aware of how quickly the pecksniffs from the campus newspaper could have the bullhorns and the signwaving undergrads screeching in his office. Yes, he has superiors too.....who fear the same damned thing.

I agree with other sentiments that he will probably be ignored, but him stepping out in public emboldens others to either make a stand or have confidence in their unpopular position - and for that I say well done sir, (I still hear GP's words about - you shouldn't say/do things that make people cringe, because the worth of a belief/stance is determined by the external validation one receives).

In Seminary (2004, Luther Seminary - St. Paul, MN -ELCA), all students were encouraged to take a three day diversity training program (I think it is now under the title - Learning Pastoral Imagination). It was led by a retired pastor, and his wife. On the first day we were to write down our backgrounds (ethnic and experience). Then we were told that regardless of our experiences, if we were white we were racist because in some way we have benefited from institutional racism. One of my fellow students was taken aback - he had an African American wife, and now he was told he was a racist.

The usual dribble continued - transgender issues, institutional racism, the need for quotas, etc., and then the catch - it was our duty as pastors to be in the forefront of this indoctrination (my words) of our congregations (word and sacrament have been turned into diversity and green stewardship).

So if you are white (and this term is applied loosely) you are racist, and should spend the rest of your life trying to amend for your sins - by financially supporting left wing causes, and with every fiber of your being - fight the right.

I have children in college and I can tell you for a fact that this type of nonsense goes on in the classroom all the time (the whites are racists and privileged routine). What's refreshing to know is that there are a lot of white college students who KNOW this is a bunch of brainwashing BS. You'd be surprised, but they are more aware of this nonsense than you think they are. So that gives me hope. What they see with their eyes and what they are being told are two very separate things. They see this.

It's easy to sit back and criticize. This letter is well-written, gives no offense except to make fundamentally truthful statements, and comes across very reasonably, and thus makes his case very well in his context. It's the sort of thing that can start other well-intentioned people raised in liberalism down the path towards truth. Not everyone is born with the chili, some have to discover it for themselves.

It may be ignored, but it's a better response than claiming no response short of violence will do, then doing nothing.

It's a well-written letter, but it will be deconstructed by the masters of deconstructive literary critiques, and they will appear smart and witty when they do it. This interruption will then be over, and we can all get back to discussing the big white evil privilege. It's quite interesting when you look at how successful one group of men was in propagating their offspring all over the world. This isn't white privilege so much as it the effects of one dominant group of males with a common patrilineal haplogroup. That is a different subject, though. I hope this man is successful in his career w/o having to capitulate. Universities need intelligent people who rebel against the system. Being a Marxist is just so old-school.

This is probably the unfortunate reality behind the culture/ideology war. The long march through the ranks has reached the rear of our lines, and we are struggling with two battle-fronts (hindered by losing the airwave war, as well). The only sure solution, cultural change, is so long term--perhaps a guerilla "war" is the only tactic that may succeed.

The kid's best approach would be to claim membership in some historically oppressed ethnic group/religion and then volunteer to attend the diversity meeting but tell them that if the meeting strayed into religious matters that he would speak out for His People and His Faith.

Not a white person's faith, of course, but some brown/red/yellow/black faith. Islam would probably be the best. Or maybe Yazidi-ism.

He can warn them them that he will contribute his diverse outlook at the diversity training (if asked) but is afraid that his diverse religious beliefs "might cause his fellow participants to attack him".

If asked he could give examples of some mainstream wacko beliefs, like women should cover their arms and legs and wear loose-fitting clothing (Jews and Muslims), or that Mohammed said women are evil temptresses. Or that he cannot touch a strange women (shake hands, etc.) or be in the same room with one without a chaperone.

They will be torn.

As a white American guy they expect him to knuckle under, submit to liberalism and suffer the jeers and condemnation of his fellow TA's.

But as a member of a traditionally oppressed religion they want him to stay in school and "diversify" the campus. They won't know whether to sh!t or go blind. Is he a victim? Is he a victimizer?

As long as he casts his attitudes and beliefs in terms of some wacko Middle Easter/Asian/African religion (a protected class) any action against him for his beliefs would be subject to Federal anti-discrimination laws.

On the other hand, if he is merely expressing his personal beliefs, they can fire him (or refuse to give him another teaching assistantship) without a second thought.

Case law is in his favor. Also the fact that they fear a Muslim backlash.

Could be fun if he plays his cards right.

I agree with the move to pass the letter along to "journalistic outlets", but ultimately this is a futile gesture, most Americans won't notice unless it's read during American Idol or Dancing with Stars commercial breaks. Best is to sue, both the university and State. This also will ultimately prove futile since the courts are rigged for the State anyways, gleefully accepting all opportunities to injure the Constitution and furthering the oppression of the masses but it would be at the very least entertaining to watch the bureaucrats on the bench twist their arguments to fit the ongoing Statist agenda.

This country is f*cked, but VP readers know this.

"At most universities, non-teaching staff outnumber faculty by about 10-1"

Yikes. Seriously? What's the source on that?

There have been a few recent studies on this, but they are incomplete. A lot of universities don't like to share the data. No surprise why not. One study recently looked at just the professional administrative staff vs. faculty, and these economists decided that 1 professional administrator to every 3 teaching faculty would be optimal for a university. What most universities had, however, was 2 professional administrators for every 1 teaching faculty. And this, of course, doesn't account for all the other staff who are not counted among the "professional administrator" ranks, all the maintenance staff, food services people, and everyone else who makes a university run. Add in all those people, and the number of faculty on campus compared to everyone else working there is very, very small. The ratio varies among universities, but it ranges anywhere from about 5-1 at teaching colleges up to about 15-1 at large research institutions. What's disturbing is how much that ratio has grown in recent years, and most of it is due to administrative bloat.

Alternative universities are easy. The real need we face is for alternative credentialing bodies, recognized by a significant number of state governments. And keep in mind that alternative credentialing bodies would increase competition against state-run universities and force the prices of college eduction lower, so pretty much everyone in the education establishment is going to think this is the worst idea ever.

Anti-Democracy Activist/28Sept13@6:15 AM,

BINGO!

And don't be afraid to back up your position w/ force as Leftists (& many of their authoritarian counterparts on the Right) tend to be opportunistic group predators. True, there are some who're confident enough in their abilities to wage an attack individually, but the general trend's toward a pack attack which means that you'll have to take out the top 2-3 leaders before the rest will get the hint that bothering you is an expensive proposition. Also don't let the sex of the attackers mitigate the response as a favorite tactic of the Left is to use 'helpless' females as proxies on the assumption that they're physically/politically 'untouchable' & therefore able to do whatever they want w/o fear of rebuke. Went to an open debate on 'gun control' in the 80s at the local univ put on by a local anti-2A/pro-thug/pro-dictatorship cult group where this tactic was 'liberally' used. Funny thing was that the 'brave' 'women' shills always had some reasonably large guys around to give whoever was destroying the lil' 'ladies' BS an appropriately menacing glare. Worked on more than a few of the pro-2A males & females in the audience until, that is, some Nam vets (ex-Airborne & Marines IIRC) not only wrecked the female haranguists claims but also asked their 'bodyguards' why the hell they were giving them to hairy eyeball for doing so.

The shocked (& suddenly innocent) 'Who, Me?' looks on their/their chica's faces was priceless, & the laughter of the majority of those assembled REALLY pissed both off after which things went rapidly downhill for the cultists at that venue & w/ the announcement a follow-up discussion in a classroom the event concluded. Things there were a replay of the main show w/ the addition of an appropriately 'authoritative' prof for addtl boilerplating, but it didn't matter as the pro-2A side did an even better job of driving a stake thru the anti-2A cult's arguments than was done previously. The soiree ended after about 90mins when a mother of 3 verbally slapped down the cult harridans & I did likewise to the 'learned' 'educator' which caused much anguish to the gals & the prof & sent the 'tuffies' into open manifestations of their 'righteous' displeasure toward the mom & myself. Her reaction was to laugh & call them on it w/ the warning that if the guys made a move she'd have NO problem w/ spanking them soundly then telling their moms about their misbehavior, mine was to simply smile my most becoming 'come on over & play, babydoll' smile accompanied by a properly noisy smooch. That was the last straw for the prof, he suddenly developed chest pains & had to be helped from the room by said 'tuffies' who gave the mom & me a final parting glare as they departed which caused us to look at each other & bust out in uproarious laughter & shifted the rest decidedly to our side.

Like the Beastie Boys said,: You gotta fight for the right to pahhhhteh! Sound advice that.

DT/28Sept13@8:26 AM,

That approach is what I call the Ouroboros Strategy, & it should be SOP for dealing w/ Leftists as it's tough to defend against & will make them go nuts if pushed hard. The prob is that it's very likely to be quite expensive unless the complainant has backing from outfits like FIRE, the Thomas More Society, or the Rutherford Institute & even then it's an iffy proposition, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be tried. Mary Lefkowitz did it at Wellesley College back in the 90s, prevailed, then wrote of her experience in History Lesson, A Race Odyssey, it cost her but the point is that she won against seemingly insurmountable odds. True, she had the advantage of being a female Leftist Jew, but that didn't matter to the other Leftists who went after her. If you/others haven't read it I urge you/them to do so as it's the academic version of the Duke lacrosse case, valuable tactical info contained therein.

Everybody is speaking about this man as though he is a out to be put on the rack and tortured, I submit to you that every private institution has a perfect right to be as doctrinaire and unfair as it wishes. If, for the sake of argument, the University wished to not hire him because he was too ugly, that would (or should also be their right), similiarly I would contend it would be their right to fire him if he was NOT racist ENOUGH!

But the real issue is that this is NOT a private institution, this is an institution funded with OUR money. The truth is, this young man is not being stolen from or materially abused, he has no more right to work their than they have a right to force him to work there. He is NOT the victim here - WE ARE. WE are the ones whose money is being stolen from us at gunpoint to support a system we do not believe in. This man is honest, and he has shown the world he is principled, heaven knows there are still places that value men of character. Perhaps he will have to seek a different form of employment or industry, perhaps he wont have to even switch from his current one, but he will be fine.

The real horror here is that nearly everyone here has gotten the point backwards - that we are being robbed and the money is being used against our interests by people WE HAVE VOTED FOR.
