We are not fooled

Larry Correia totally feigns putting on a supportive face while pretending to play down the fact that Steve and I actually managed to OUTGUN the master Monster Hunter. But we are not fooled. We all know this has lit a fire burning deep within the man, the green-hot flames of fury fed by envy, disbelief, and outrage:
I know the author online. I’ve participated in many email chains with him, Sarah, Mike, and Tom. I’ve got a copy, but I’ve not had a chance to read it yet. I wanted to read the review copy, but I’ve got a deadline and I’ve been slammed. I’ve heard good things about it though.... I offend people on the internet for being an unabashed right winger. Vox sends them into hyperbolic rage spirals. He is their devil. They hate him more than Scott Card or George Bush, so that is saying something. Anybody who has caused that many panty twists is deserving of royalties just for the entertainment value of watching the literati have come aparts.
Needless to say, I'll be watching my six with extra caution given the likelihood that Larry will be sending magic kanji-enhanced Shadow Guard after us. Now, where did I put that Benelli-Mossberg Area Suppression Expediter-5K? One of those city block-sweepers could come in handy right about now.

In truth, it wouldn't be entirely unfair to describe Quantum Mortis as Alien Hunters Intergalactic in Space. We had a nice little SF murder mystery going, but after reading MHI and the Grimnoire Chronicles, I realized that it had two major flaws.
  1. Too few bodies.
  2. Too small guns.
That is how Graven Tower received a transfer from the Trans Paradis Police Department to the Military Crimes Investigative Division. My reasoning was that the police can only get away with so much collateral damage before the public refuses to put up with it. But the military, well, all they have to do is cry "planetary security" and they can get away with damn near anything.

Not that we don't have recent experience in Amerika with that sort of thing, of course.

Truly massive body counts begin to pall quickly, as seen in the Posleen slaughters. Okay, maybe not quickly, as I continue to read them and I enjoyed Watchers on the Rhine and Old Yellow Eyes. But without a good bunch of characters and/or plot, slaughter porn is just like sexual porn - you keep having to up the ante to keep getting the same level of your fix.

It's really a shame that Gravity Kills is so short, and therefore not in hardcover. Both covers are good, but I would have loved to have that one on the shelf next to AMD. I'm almost sad that such a great cover was used for such a short story.

Of course, if you make the next novel's cover even better, all complaints are rescinded.

Don't worry, it's GUN PORN, not horror or slaughter porn. And actually, it's an SF mystery series at its heart. Don't mistake the spice for the meat.

VD - Needless to say, I'll be watching my six with extra caution

Smart move. The fact that he uses such obscenely flattering complements as this: "Vox sends [leftists] into hyperbolic rage spirals. He is their devil. They hate him more than Scott Card or George Bush" suggests that he's trying to lull you into a false sense of security.

Blogger JartStar December 05, 2013 4:35 PM

Catan,

Thanks Catan. I'm glad you like the cover so much and I think tomorrow Vox is going to post a bit more on it.

Blogger jaericho December 05, 2013 4:39 PM

I started AMD last night. I'm only in chapter 3, but I'm already hooked. This book is going to be fun.

Also known as Project Genesis. But your name is catchy too.

Goddammit!!!

Help me out here again Vox, please. I want to fire up my Kobo while clad in my underwear in bed - and grab your books off the electronic shelf with no muss or fuss. Is that possible?

Good grief I can't get the monster hunter's books either.

But I CAN get McRapey's. I find this whole situation unacceptable! I would go to Kindle but my library on Kobo is huge and I don't think I could migrate it over to the Kindle without the help of a sorcerer and three computer geeks.

Can you and Correria help a fella out a bit...? Why won't you publish on Kobo too...?

Kindle Select. Also, the sales there are trivial. But I prefer epub myself. Buy them on Amazon, email me the receipt, and I'll send you the epubs. I just sent out 7 epubs to a guy about five minutes ago for this very reason.

Blogger Tom Kratman December 05, 2013 5:46 PM

Hmmm...this has me wondering how long it will be before some mindless left wing ("Lord, forgive us our redunancies") blog begins to wax orgasmic over the coming civil war in badwickedrightdoublewingplusnaziungoodfascistevilbadbadbadnaughtybad fiction.

If any of you don't know it, if there's anyone who would honestly cheer on a competitor who was still on the same team, it's probably Larry.

Got the ebook from MarchLorder and now have to schedule the time to read. Heck, if I were still on the road, over half the country 3 weeks out of 4 I would just set up the Kindle with text to speech and an outboard amp and listen for hours.
Alas, I can't use that prop anymore and the homestead work sits there waiting for resolution. Life is a beech....

Anonymous Krul December 05, 2013 5:54 PM

Tom Kratman, speaking for myself I would welcome a literary war between VD and LC. Can you imagine the glorious ways in which they would attempt to oneup each other? The mind reels.

Blogger Tom Kratman December 05, 2013 5:58 PM

Oh, yeah; but they'd be fucking _men_ about it, with a hand up for the one in the dust, a hearty clap on the back, and the winner springing for beer.

Blogger Doom December 05, 2013 6:09 PM

"But the military, well, all they have to do is cry "planetary security" and they can get away with damn near anything." Well, I don't know about that! You are forgetting the intelligence community... or... are you.

Why do you insist on calling it fiction, when it is really just thinly veiled reality. Like it? Not? No matter. It's what has been happening for eons. You don't think Attila or Arminius died of the reasons "historians" and "newsmen" of their or our day purport, do you? Even a rotted empire, what's it has become civilized, learns how to deal with "issues". Loverly. Just the facts, man.

Anonymous JACIII December 05, 2013 6:10 PM

VD,
Tower needs a better sidearm. The Sphinx could always go in for an optional upgrade to the third millennial equivalent of the 454 Casull. A man should have to consider just how big a mess he really wants to make when he starts squeezing the trigger. That gun caused me to pass up a shot on a nice 8 pointer that was just too close.

If you ever feel the need for planetwide destruction always keep in mind the "Nuke and Pave" option. Quikrete terraforming!

Anonymous zeonxavier December 05, 2013 6:27 PM

You can purchase Correia's work in various formats at Baen's website, if you wish.

Blogger JCclimber December 05, 2013 6:29 PM

I do like the paralizing function of their guns. And the selective EMP pulse is a nice touch. I"m curious how Graven is shielded from being affected by his own gun, not that it makes the story less cool.

And I don't think the body count is high at all. Admittedly, I haven't made it to the very last few pages yet.

Blogger Bogey December 05, 2013 6:34 PM

This could be an old school demolition comedy, Larry gabs the Tommy Gun, Vox Grabs a grenade launcher, Larry pulls out the howitzer, Vox mans a missle launcher, etc.

By the way I noticed how blue those covers are, intentional? A visual cue for blue vs. pink science fiction?

Anonymous TimP December 05, 2013 6:47 PM

As well as purchasing Larry Correia's books through Baen, I'm pretty sure you can purchase most/some of Vox Day's in epub direct from Marcher Lord, eg: http://www.marcherlordpress.com/bookstore/hinterlands-imprint/a-man-disrupted-by-steve-rzasa-and-vox-day/

Fair enough. You can claim the credit for the decision to go back and considerably amp up the assault scene as well as getting the details on the knife correct.

Anonymous VD December 05, 2013 8:13 PM

BUT WHERE IS MY FREE E-BOOK?????????????????

Or actually, if you pre-ordered, just email me and tell me if you want epub or mobi.

Anonymous WaterBoy December 05, 2013 8:41 PM

Vox: "just email me and tell me if you want epub or mobi."

Much better way, and was how they handled it with ATOB, too.

This one, they email you a coupon code, then you go to their website and order the ebook, put in the code to reduce the cost to zero, then go to checkout. Then the emailed receipt has the URL to download. Why not just email the download addresses in the first place, one for each type of ebook?

Blogger Nate December 05, 2013 9:03 PM

I'll take it.

You heard him kids. That assault scene? It got cranked up to eleven based on my advice.. and the modded laser rifle money shot was totally inspired by me too.

And the knife. The all important knife. Also mine.

Nate's Original Ilk, first one listed under VOXOLOGISTI.

Blogger JCclimber December 06, 2013 2:21 AM

The eye implant scene? Nice touch, I like how they spent more time figuring out how to cover that one up in the post-op report than the entire actual arrest took.

Anonymous VD December 06, 2013 3:10 AM

Nice touch, I like how they spent more time figuring out how to cover that one up in the post-op report than the entire actual arrest took.

When Nate mentioned the knife, he meant the brand and details of the knife. The creative use to which it was put was mine, as I was thinking about what would be the likely result of effectively tasing a cyborg. Losing control of your motor skills just isn't going to be the same.

Blogger Unknown December 06, 2013 6:58 AM

I wouldn't take it too seriously. It had The Red Knight at number four. It's pretty close to unreadable.

Anonymous VD December 06, 2013 9:23 AM

He's... way over your weight class.

Maybe not as far as you think. I'm pushing 190 these days. With a week of creatine and a big meal, I might be able to hit 200.

Blogger Nate December 06, 2013 10:15 AM

Indeed I do not wish to over state.

Blogger JCclimber December 06, 2013 11:49 AM

I wasn't being sarcastic when I said that I liked the account of rewriting the arrest report.

It isn't all that different from how I have to craft the reports and presentations to ensure mostly female departments will be able to see that their department performance sucks, without the defensive screens slam up to prevent any kind of meaningful discussion of how we can work with them to improve things.

I sometimes think that 50% of my valued job skills are the abilities to move middle and upper management past the defensive reactions and get them to align on improving things without gaming the metrics.

Going to write my review of the AMD now that I finished the book yesterday. By the way, the ePub format worked very quickly and easily with iBooks. I think even non-technical people could figure out how to get the book uploaded to their iDevice, but I'm probably underestimating the stupidity of people, again.

Blogger Markku December 06, 2013 12:16 PM

Also note that the epub is a completely unencrypted, unobfuscated format. All the xhtml formatting is right there, out in the open in the file, and you can see it with Sigil, for example. And since xhtml is pretty much the easiest format to convert to any other format, you REALLY own the file, even after decades when everyone has forgotten the original format. Simply copypaste all the xhtml to a plain text file when you see the sun setting on epub, and you can read the book even in a browser.

Not so with Mobi.

Blogger tweell December 06, 2013 6:52 PM

Larry Correia is 6'5" and 300 pounds. Yeah, he may not be spending enough time exercising nowadays, but that's enough of a weight and reach advantage to make a very short uneven match. In anything involving running, you've got it, Vox, but otherwise...

Anonymous Peter December 07, 2013 4:19 PM

Read AMD yesterday.... An excellent read. Have recommended it. Good to see something with believable military characters.
