Finding Climate Change

There are some who doubt that God exists. They obviously haven't been paying much attention to the events at the South Pole, where the MV Akademik Schokalskiy was carrying a group of true believers in the gospel of Al Gore to document environmental changes there. For we now know beyond any shadow of a doubt that God not only exists, but has a rather puckish sense of humor.

Racism in the Obama Regime

So it appears that despite my doubts, the so-called “Knockout Game” exists after all. It turns out that it is a game of hate crime in which young white thugs attempt to knock out innocent elderly black men.

Do-It-Yourself Police

It should surprise no one that a county government would prefer to see people hand them money and permit them to oversee the spending of it than take matters, and responsibility, into their own hands. The entire concept of “big government” is a socialistic one that depends entirely on the idea that centralizing decision-making will inevitably lead to better societal outcomes. The fact that this is much more often false than it is true never even slows down those who benefit materially from the structure from shamelessly attempting to push it on everyone.

2.1 million enrolled ( at that's IF the admin isn't lying this time like it was all the other times ) out of a nation of 300 million is NOTHING.

since O-care had forcibly ejected +4 million people from the old insurance programs which they had liked ( by the middle of Nov, we don't have a year end number ) and wanted to keep, Obamacare is now a roaring success to the net of ... - 2 million people being covered by insurance.

yippee ki-yay, mofos.

Remember when they were trying to pass it congress was receiving calls 99 to 1 against it? So they past it in a lame duck congress just before Christmas. Looks like the compliance level is validating the opinion of the public.

Vox made a prediction at the time that everyone needs to remember. He said something along the line of when they figure out they don't have to comply with this law it will be destructive to many other laws shoved down their throat. Even the Democrats are waving their hands on this and realizing what Vox pointed out some time ago before it became evident.

Well, the fixes to the website went in Nov. 30th, Obama proclaimed the fixes on Dec 1st, and by Dec 2nd the website was handling over a million visits per day. And by the end of December, the site was stable and handling over 2 million visits per day. I also predicted that they probably had the fix in hand before the fiasco and lo-and-behold they apparently simply bought some hardware off the shelf that quadrupled their bandwidth. Wow. Like you really needed to hire a Fortune 500 CEO for that one.

It was all rather easy to predict because progressives don't care about good end results, they care about PROGRESS. And what better way to give the appearance of PROGRESS than to start from a position of failure?

dh, the law is absolutely terrible. I lost my catastrophic plan and the new "choices" that I have are 10 times worse: $3000 deductible vs. 0 deductible, $6350 out of pocket maximum vs. 0 out of pocket, no out of network coverage vs. 80% out of network coverage. Also, the network is much smaller and the premiums are about the same (but I get periodontal dentisty if I'm below 19, maternity coverage that is impossible for me to use, free obesity and depression screenings, and free drugs and doctors visits if I hit the $6350 out of pocket limit).

How is this good for me? I am healthy, 26, keep fit and avoid alcohol and smoking.

men of science reflect, but don't speak: cold weather/ ice bergs kill penguins. Taken from the annuls of the trapped men of science....

While counting penguin nest sites, I reflected on the part that chance plays in Antarctic life. Before B09B grounded in Commonwealth Bay, the Adelie penguin rookery was perfectly sited to maximise breeding success. After B09B arrived, the bay became filled with solid sea ice. Where once the penguins could hop down from their rocky homes, dive into the bay and feed close to shore, they are now forced to walk tens of kilometres across the ice to the water’s edge, their lives transformed into ones of terrible hardship. It was dreadful to see so many dead chicks and abandoned eggs, apparently casualties of the lack of a nearby food supply. While counting penguin nest sites, I reflected on the part that chance plays in Antarctic life. By the numbers of those who actually signed up. I read an article that said of the 2 million that signed up 1.6 million were eligible and signed up for Medicaid under the new law in States that allowed Medicaid expansion. So if the other 400,000 or so did sign up and pay their premium, while 4 million lost their insurance you can get a pretty good Idea of what is going on.

Both are collectivist....both are socialist......both rely on coercion.
both are anti-freedom....both are anti-individual.
.
Socialism may be more globalist or universal.
Fascism has traditionally been more nationalistic.
.
Fascism permits large corporate enterprises owned by the wealthy, while outlawing small business.
Socialism insists on the public ownership of all means of production, which is distributed by edict.
.
Both are equally intolerable.
One cannot be preferred over the other.

people of no character would allow you to squirm out of the failure of the obvious prediction you made earlier. ACA is now the law of the land. universal enrollment is now required ( or will be once his Nibs stops arbitrarily abrogating his own law ) for all comrades.

anything less than 50% enrollment of the populace amounts to complete rejection by the people. anything less than ~75% enrollment renders the entire project completely unviable financially. as the vast majority of those who are going to fail to enroll are going to be the healthy young ... the exact population which MUST enroll in order to finance care for the elderly.

not that the young can afford to pay anyways, too many of them are unemployed.

i would agree with you that we can probably count on the captive opposition ... errr, ahem ... Republicans to find some way to kludge this law into continuation.

rather than excising the entire bill from all law, as they should and as their base wants them to do.

but that's a different question than whether or not Obamacare is going to be a great success in Kazakhstan.

The reason Josephine county has budget problems is bad county government wasting money, the feds and liberals in Portland killed the timber industry there with the whole spotted owl deal and now the Feds have cut off the timber subsidies. Perhaps if they could get the Feds to pay property taxes since they "own" a large chunk of the county or the state does... its all part of agenda 21. Idiots here in the liberal part of the state then bitch about having to subsidize those counties despite that its all due to their liberalism. The only big or famous industry there in Josephine county is Noveske rifles.

There is a liberal radio show host in Portland/Salem who is also a state gov labor lawyer who complained last year on air that Josephine county should just raise property taxes like Jackson county next door. This completely ignores that there is a much larger tax base in Jackson county and its the commercial hub for the whole SW region. Even then its been hit hard too.

dh - This is typical thinking for people who think that Pres. Obama is a socialist mastermind.

I should have left off mastermind. That's not the focus. I am not sure if Obama is a stooge or not, but regardless, he's not a dedicated socialist. His first instinct in a problem seems to be to hand out money to powerful corporations. It's his go to play. So while he is for sure a powerful leftist, he's no socialist. Someone like Sen. Sanders or Sen. Sherrod Brown are to differing degrees straight out socialists with no qualms about it.

For the immoral people in government the means are completely justified by the "end" they think that they have in mind. It's all bullshit. It if forced theft, and nothing more.
Yeah, I am going to give you a newsflash. All of us on the left get that libertarians view any government taking - whether it be income, opportunity, land, natural resource, regulation or otherwise - as theft. I see your point, we see your point, we just don't care.

We could go have a nice long argument about if thats what the founders wanted, and that would be a lot of fun and you probably (with VD or Nate's help) make an extremely compelling case. And after all that, we still won't care. Because guess what - whatever was intended, the last 80 years has been a democracy with smatterings of representation, all ordered around business interests. Not little ones, but the big ones.

When people like yourself talk like you do "socialist, fascist, what does it matter?", it makes me cringe. Because there are a lot of people, like myself, who though leftist or GOP, have very strong sympathies with populists. Crying "socialism" for something like Obamacare, which isn't actually socialist, and is in fact probably the last pit stop before the US healthcare system is totally complete socialized (instead of the 50-60% it has been for the last 25 years) is stupid. Because there is broad non-partisan support for populist policies and outcomes, and because when push comes to shove Americans prefer to be left to their own devices instead of coddled by government, it is much better to say the correct thing. That means calling Obamacare/ACA what it is - a fascist perversion of government and corporations. Saying it's "socialism" or whatever is (a) inaccurate and (b) just going to redraw the same battle lines. And so we have the ACA, still, after years of a lot of people not liking it.

From the article
I also pointed out that the Australian scientists on-board were climatologists, and not operational weather forecasters, and finding this sort of weather data probably wasn’t in their skill set.

Sticking within their skillset and fabricating data that said there was no ice and the ship could sail on didn't work?

Vox made a prediction at the time that everyone needs to remember. He said something along the line of when they figure out they don't have to comply with this law it will be destructive to many other laws shoved down their throat.

I think the era of Peak Compliance is in the rear view mirror and fading fast. Liberals have always flaunted the law. Conservatives are starting to now as well. Not only that, but think about what' themes are resonating in entertainment. The Hunger Games may have no end of stupid plot elements, but it's still at heart a story about a vile, oppressive central government and the courage of people who will oppose it, and it's one of the biggest movie and book franchises going.

Sure, sure, but men don't see movies any more, they stay at home playing XBox. So what are they playing? Skyrim is a smash hit, and it's plot (aside from the minor issue of a mythical dragon trying to devour the world) is about a weak but oppressive central government sparking rebellion by outlawing (at the behest of outsiders no less) the dominant religion of the region. And the rebellion didn't really get going until the Imperials actually started trying to enforce the ban...

Jack--

You are REALLY on to something with your note about Hunger Games being about this topic, plus video games taping into it.

This is a serious topic. In fact many many recent smash popular hits in media are centered around inept governments and rules. Harry Potter is a great example - a central side plot in the entire series is how ineffective and bumbling both the real and magic governments are - and how they get subverted into use for dark and evil purposes.

It's too early to tell how this will affect society, but it's probably good news.

Anonymous Stilicho January 02, 2014 3:59 AM

So while he is for sure a powerful leftist, he's no socialist. Someone like Sen. Sanders or Sen. Sherrod Brown are to differing degrees straight out socialists with no qualms about it.

You are simply wrong. Fascism is socialism. It is simply a subset or different flavor thereof. Coke and Pepsi. Both are soft drinks. The fact that you may prefer Coke or that Coke is better known worldwide is irrelevant to that fact. Moreover, your definitions are imprecise. A better formulation (without abandoning your format) would be along the lines of:

Socialism = the state forces you to do business with the enterprises owned by the state
Facism = the state forces you to do business with the enterprises owned by friends and apparatchiks of the state.

The key definitional element of both is control by the state of the means of production. See, e.g., http://www.econlib.org/library/Enc/Fascism.html

Where socialism sought totalitarian control of a society’s economic processes through direct state operation of the means of production, fascism sought that control indirectly, through domination of nominally private owners. Where socialism nationalized property explicitly, fascism did so implicitly, by requiring owners to use their property in the “national interest”—that is, as the autocratic authority conceived it. (Nevertheless, a few industries were operated by the state.) Where socialism abolished all market relations outright, fascism left the appearance of market relations while planning all economic activities. Where socialism abolished money and prices, fascism controlled the monetary system and set all prices and wages politically. In doing all this, fascism denatured the marketplace. Entrepreneurship was abolished. State ministries, rather than consumers, determined what was produced and under what conditions.

I expect you are correct in this assessment.

Anonymous dh January 02, 2014 4:17 AM

Stilicho--

It is clear that socialism and fascism are closely related. However, there are a few key differences that make them not equivalent, and hence why we have two seperate terms. The important one is the control.

From the 3rd party - indirect vs. direct control - is clearly laid. Socialism is direct control. Fascism is indirect control.

That's why it is sound so stupid to call something fascist something socialist. That is precisely how you get morons bleeting to "keep your government hands off my Medicare" and people complaining that mandatory private insurance is the nationalization of the health care sector of the economy. It's silliness.

Anonymous dh January 02, 2014 4:20 AM

Stilicho--

Also, most importantly, if you call something socialist, and the world doesn't end (because, especially, it's not *actually socialist*), you have debased the label. That's a non-trivial problem. The right is steadily losing the battle for cultural dominance. I am not comfortable with this. There are only a few areas where the language of the right is still dominant, one of which is on taxes and waste, the other is on guns. The right is just about to lose, for all time most likely, the language of healthcare and delivery.

Anonymous Conservative January 02, 2014 4:31 AM

Truth is truth. Regardless of consequences. More importantly, you missed the point: fascism is just a subset of socialism. Just as communism is a subset of socialism. Your mistake is labeling your preferred political system as "socialism" to the exclusion of all else that properly falls under that broad label. You need a more precise term for your brand of socialism to differentiate it from the others. Otherwise, you will get tarred with the fascist brush as well as the communist brush, the fabian brush, etc. I suspect this is why you are trying to defend the socialist "brand" from association with some of the less than popular failures of its subsets right now. It is the debasement of the "socialist" label that worries you because it is being associated with failure.

The right is just about to lose, for all time most likely, the language of healthcare and delivery.

Your concern is... touching. One of the greatest effects, and totally unintended and unanticipated by the Left, of the Obamacare fiasco is that Americans are going to learn about the costs of medical services and get accustomed to paying for most of them out of pocket due to the very high deductibles that are part of the more affordable Obamacare options.

As said Vox, a fiction writer wouldn't make up a story like this one.

I didn't write this but am happy to pass it on.
It says absolutely everything one needs to know about the fraudulent hypocritical lives of
the planet saving left

How tough life must seem when you've seen every movie on your ipad and there is no duty free shopping - these explorers can tell how tough it really got - why their bunks had a list! Damn good story of survival to sell to national geographic or readers digest

Wrong. The ACA is a disaster. However, from here on out, any attempt to change it or repeal or it deal with it will require the GOP coming up with a plan to deal with the 5 million people with coverage because of it (most of whom are either on Medicaid, or on their parents plans. The balance being on new private plans subsidized by the government).

There is no way out now for the GOP except to expand government to kill the ACA. Just repealing it is no longer a political option.

That's why the few conservatives with a brain have been really afraid of this thing. It's another teat to disconnect from the public. And like all the other teats, the process of detaching is very, very, very difficult.

In the case of the ice ship disaster. You are forgetting important things. This is a tactical loss. "Har har har, those idiots got trapped in ice they thought was receding.. chuckle". The battle lines have already been drawn and this advances nor retreats anyone. So, great, we can all laugh at them, but the agenda is not slowed or cowed one little bit.

This is why the left continues it's march against the conservatives in America. We just keep going. Day after day. Year after year. Set backs like this don't phase us. These some yahoo's will be back next season, this time with a big shipper, with more equipment, with more money, and with more fervor.

Conservatives with a brain likely realize that there's no way to scale back the public services that people are addicted to. Too many voters, too disconnected from reality, receiving too much that they're too attached to.

The problem is - and this is something the smarter conservatives have said over and over - it really doesn't matter how many government programs you have, because at the end of the day you're going to have to pay for them. And the evidence indicates you're not going to be able to pay for them down the road. Then, the problem will solve itself. And I don't mean that as a foretelling of some strange civil war and/or the rise of states rights or anything else. All I know is that these programs must be paid for, and if you don't have the money, you don't have the programs.

This is why the left continues it's march against the conservatives in America. We just keep going. Day after day. Year after year. Set backs like this don't phase us.

Sure it does. I mean, great speech and all, really dramatic - but yes, setbacks like this do, in fact, phase the diehard liberals, on a lot of levels. They see a lot of people, including some people who were previously sympathetic to them, getting a rude wakeup call. They see trust in the government dropping. They see a plan they spent a lot of time and energy and money defending, blowing up. Yes, that shakes them.

What you probably mean is that the setbacks won't stir you to change your plans. Which is true, but it's also not news - you may as well have said, "Look, we want what we want. We don't care who it harms. We don't care how unworkable it is. We don't care how many failures it goes through, how fucked up it makes anything, how unrealistic or unreasonable it all is. We're going to keep demanding what we demand because we like it and that's it, end of story." Yeah, we know.

Meanwhile, I look over to Europe. Remember when Europe was held up by American liberals as this glorious place that proved that you could just ramp up the social spending and expand the government endlessly and everything would be great? Now we're seeing austerity measures and social services cutbacks in various countries and more. Hell, take a good look at Russia - not exactly a shining beacon of capitalism, that, but there you had a flat out socialistic government filled with extreme versions of the same people you're building up as unstoppable juggernauts, and man, how things have changed. It had far less to do with the scheming machinations of intelligent political masterminds than it did with straight up reality, but things eventually improved/changed, and the nation changed course.

You say that many conservatives are stupid because they're not seeing just how big of a cultural defeat the very existence of Obamacare will be. I say many liberals are stupid because they're under the delusion that the big threat they have to fight is conservatives. Nah, it never was. Their biggest enemy is the consequences of their own actions, the results of 'the agenda, at all costs, no matter the results!' thinking. The same thing that drastically cut services in greece will cut them in America eventually.

Anonymous VD January 02, 2014 5:44 AM

It is clear that socialism and fascism are closely related. However, there are a few key differences that make them not equivalent, and hence why we have two seperate terms.

I find it amusing that you are trying to lecture everyone on the importance of precision, while simultanously equating "socialist" and "socialistic". Physician, heal thyself.

I wrote: "The entire concept of “big government” is a socialistic one that depends entirely on the idea that centralizing decision-making will inevitably lead to better societal outcomes."

Note that this encompasses the Fascistic "big government" as well as the Republican "big government", the Communist "big government" and the Democratic "big government". Regardless of whether one deals directly with the state or the well-connected corporations that are state creations, the decisions concerning with whom you will deal are made at the center.

It may or may not be socialist. It is, however, "socialistic".

A difference which makes no difference, dh. Stilicho is correct. Socialism is the overall umbrella. Communism, Fascism, and the Nation Socialists are are subsets of socialism.

Nope. These people want to kill us. I'm through caring whether they live or die. They deserve whatever happens to them.

Nah. Womyn's/Queer/Black/Hispanic "Studies" should all cost at least a hundred grand, payable in full in advance from nongovernmental sources, no refund if fail to "graduate". (Degrees in those majors also should be revokable by hair-triggers such as convictions for any crime, homosexual activity, advocacy for affirmative action/slavery reparations/violation of immigration law, bastardy, owning any cats, going over 160 pounds, not holding down a wage-earning job for over 6 months ala Jesse Jackson, etc.)

I don't know it is original, but over the last few days I have been repeatedly thinking of it that any communalist philosophy seeks to make the strong slaves to the weak, the capable slaves to the incompetent, the wise slaves to the buffoon. Mostly the first phrasing, for simplicity. This is as morally bankrupt as any slavery, but compounds it by both reversing the natural order and being fundamentally unworkable.
