Same as he ever was

You may recall that I previously demonstrated that John Scalzi's claim to have 50,000 daily readers was a 12x exaggeration of his actual daily blog readership in 2013, which was 20,600 daily pageviews and 4,085 daily readers. As it turns out, this significant exaggeration of his site traffic and his influence was nothing new.  Consider this post from July 2009, in which he arrogantly claimed that he was more influential than the three major SF publications, Analog, Asimov's, and Fantasy & Science Fiction, combined.
Brad Torgersen: “Unless the work you’re writing is not the sort that fits any of the Big Three, why would you allow the format and method of submission to stop you from sending to the three markets still considered to be the Top Dogs in short F and SF fiction?”

John Scalzi: "Because it would cost me money to buy a printer, paper and ink, the rate they pay is shite, and I can reach more people on my Web site in a day than any two of them can in a month."
In July 2009, Whatever had 300,487 monthly pageviews, or 9,613 per day. That meant he had about 1,940 daily readers. In 2009, Analog's monthly circulation was 25,418 and Asimov's was 16,696. It will probably not escape the mathematically literate observer's attention that 42,114 is more than 1,940. So, five years ago, he was exaggerating his site traffic by a factor of 21.7. His absurd 2013 claims are actually less exaggerated than his previous claims.

And, of course, he was aggressively policing his potential critics even then.
Just as a general note, as I’ve told Brad to move on from this thread, directing comments to him specifically will be frustrating for him, and will not get actual responses.
Those who have recently lost respect for John Scalzi were simply not paying sufficient attention to his antics before. He's precisely the same narcissistic con man that he's always been, the only difference is that now he is less able to successfully control the narrative and spin a self-serving web of deceit because an increasing number of people in the SF/F world are aware of the facts and are able to see through his incessantly fraudulent activity.

As Bernie Madoff learned, eventually people figure out the con. Mr. Scalzi may not yet have come to terms with the fact that the jig is up yet, but sooner or later, he will have to do so.

As I noted on another post, I wonder if Rupert Murdoch knows about Scalzi's opinion of those who "suckle [Murdoch's] withered, reactionary grandpa teats" (direct quote from a 2009 Scalzi post).

That opinion seems to have changed dramatically that Scalzi himself has a property in development with Fox.

Maybe cashing a fat option check from Murdoch doesn't count as "teat-suckling" because shut up.

I've considered posting a request for clarification over there, but haven't bothered. I doubt if it would stay up long.

Not liking the guy: fine. Slagging the guy off for years and then taking his money: zero class.

Hmmm, based on an interview with Brad that I read last year, I thought he was fairly reasonable and had only recently been converted into a complete goon from the influence of the Four Horsemen of Conservative Speculative Fiction (Kratman, Ringo, Williamson, Corriea), but it would appear he was a goon as far back 2009.

There's nothing quite as amusing as a guy from Ohio trying to casually cram in British affectations into his everyday vernacular.
Oh, @scalzi, I hope you also call wrenches "spanners", that you tell your supper companions when you have to "pop to the loo" and that you tell your wife with the Dolf Lundgren chin profile that you're "looking to kip" at bedtime.
Just because it's Ohio doesn't mean you can't suck a fag* while looking out over your bitchin' lawn, pretending it's the Dorset countryside.

I agree Brad was not trolling. I've had a few interactions with him online and he seems extremely genuine.

However, I'm not convinced that Golf Pro was a troll either. It's possible that I missed some big issue with him, but everything I saw was him responding to people asking him questions and generally doing so in a more reasonable way than others were treating him. I didn't think he deserved to be banned and I think it's dangerous territory whenever one relies on the judgement of a few insiders to make this determination. Exhibit A is your expulsion from SFWA.

Blogger Doom March 18, 2014 3:04 PM

I don't know about that. SF/F writers, generally, are just people. And most people are stupid, ignorant, or both. They are based on feelings. What feels good today? Usually anything but the truth. Still, with other voices out there, they might be confused as to whom to follow. I guess I am saying many people, no matter their profession, are like mud. Have you ever tried to sharpen mud? It always surprises me a little, given the "rugged individualist" background of the US in general, that we've strayed so far that liberals honestly can't fathom how exclusion or social ostracism or outgrouping, or whatever you want to call it, simply isn't the deterrent that they think it is.

It's just a political ploy so he doesn't look like a complete pansy in the eyes of his peers, after all democrats are part of "We must do something!" crowd even if doing something is just spinning wheels. The truth is the Obama and his administration knows that Putin will fight if he has too, that there is little to gain for us by fighting him and that the Euros have no collective will to stand up to Putin. Imagine the squeals of outrage if Obama come out and honestly said: "We are going to do nothing about Crimea because there is little to gain from starting a war in a region with a nation that we know will put up a very difficult fight."

The true mark of a rabbit.

Fighting is not the only alternative, there are several others.

"We are going to do nothing about Crimea because there is little to gain from starting a war in a region with a nation that we know will put up a very difficult fight."

Well, if I remember correctly, there was a poll that suggested that the majority of the people would like just that.

Anonymous Doug Wardell March 18, 2014 4:13 PM

Does redshirts have similar sexual favors dialog to omw? If so, does fx include it?

It doesn't have that sort of dialogue that I recall.

While we're on the topic, that dialogue you reference was actually somewhat reminiscent of my time in the Army. I served in an infantry unit and we said pretty much anything we could come up with that would be shocking or offensive to an outsider, as long as there weren't any women around anyway. Heck, one time my buddy was carrying groceries up the barracks stairs and his squadmate latched on and gave him a hickey. Why? My buddy had a girl back home (and was loyal to her) and his squadmate knew everyone would give him grief about the hickey because of that.

If people have this vision of soldiers as a bunch of guys who wouldn't say or do anything which might give reason to think they're gay, that doesn't match my experience. If that's not it, I don't really understand the issue Vox and others have with that particular passage. I don't find it at all hard to believe that soldiers would have an inside joke like that. The only thing I find hard to believe is that the women who heard it wouldn't have them court martialed / written up for NJP.

Anonymous GreyS March 18, 2014 4:18 PM

"Well, if I remember correctly, there was a poll that suggested that the majority of the people would like just that."

that's the exact opposite of what the notorious right wing shill rag the WashPo is reporting:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2014/03/11/few-americans-want-firm-stand-against-russia-in-ukraine/
"Only 29 percent of Americans would like for the Obama administration to take a "firm stand"

note as well that 'firm stand' is a long damn way from a shooting war with an ICBM equipped nuclear power.

i would estimate American support for actual military action in Crimea to be lower than the error band of any sampling method ... to pull a number out of my ass.

Being relatively new, I've missed some of that history, and tracking aliases and getting a sense of how they operate might help keep folks (including me) from engaging with one of these folks in good faith when they show up again under a new name. It might also be interesting to see just how persistent some people are when it comes to banging their heads against walls--dogs returning to their vomit and all that. If the names aren't handy or are something you'd prefer to keep close to the vest, no worries.

He finally got banned after I put him on a five-comment limit. That's the one thing he can't handle and it's how it is easy to ID him. Sooner or later, usually sooner, he cracks and lets loose a flood of comments.

Wow. To paraphrase, "I was a poor steward of other peoples' money in the past, so please give me money so that I can pay them what I should have paid them before."

1. Did she have money, paid to her by people who sold books she published, which she owed to authors?
2. Did she fail to pay the money to those authors?

If the answer to both questions is yes, it's theft. It'd be one thing if she'd just admit that she stole the money, however inadvertently, but she acts as though it shouldn't be considered theft since bad stuff was happening to her and her family.

'Banned Trolls' is a hotlink in the left sidebar under Topics. Vox usually makes a specific post when he bans someone but some of the really old trolls like 'Bearded Spock' and 'Phoenician' never got that treatment.

anonagain was originally Taylor ( although she was handle swapping before she got banned ) and there's lots of others who've gone through multiple names.

Thanks, bob k. mando. I'd noticed the troll ban tag before on posts but hadn't noticed it in the sidebar.

Reading through those posts, it reminds that of the other day when someone mentioned the Pox Vopoli blog. I hadn't thought about that for months, so I checked it out only to find that it's largely a gripe session between Pox, Ann Morgan, Phoenician, and a couple of fence-sitting foils. Their last thread started a month ago and has 146 comments, about 90+% of which are Phoenician, Ann Morgan, and someone named GG. Pissy little bunch over there.

The hilarious part is the last couple of comments where Ann and Phoenician think Vox is gay for/jealous of Scalzi because of posts like this one. This at the end of a month-long lonely thread with 146 comments and basically 3 participants about a guy who's ignoring them. The projection and lack of self-awareness is just staggering.

That's the one thing he can't handle and it's how it is easy to ID him.

All one needs is a full paragraph, and he can't help but do paragraphs. Just like he can't help do cock.

Ya, Nate. You can't unwrite a paragraph.

Scalzi never had a conservative inkling to begin with. Conservatives tend to appreciate the venerable institutions that came before. Most would be thrilled to have a story or art published by any of those magazines.

...and quite frankly Analog standards are high, they would probably reject a Scalzi submission.

you should read a biography of Dan'l Boone.

born and raised in the wilds of PA, his parents moved to NC. from there, Boone continued moving westward as settlers followed him until he wound up on the far side of the Mississippi in Missouri.

I know, right? Love Boone. And Kit Carson. And Davey Crockett. And Jack Hays. To me, that's the epitome of the American personality, at least as it used to be. The threat of being outgrouped is laughable--they are strongly disinclined to ever be ingrouped as it is.

i would estimate American support for actual military action in Crimea to be lower than the error band of any sampling method ... to pull a number out of my ass.

Joe Biden expresses delight about Russia being "naked" and "alone". Man, what is it with these people?

Blogger Joshua Dyal March 19, 2014 10:52 AM

Have you ever seen a grown Russia naked?

The Bible talks about how a thief should repay 7-fold what he stole, even if it was because he was starving. Theft is theft, whatever the motivation.
