A whiff of Hultgreen-Curie

At Alpha Game, it is observed that appears women in the military are closing the all-important suicide gap between male and female soldiers.

Meanwhile, at Castalia House, Anson contemplates the difference between "fluff" and "poorly done" in a review of John Ringo:
If a novel is poorly done, it doesn’t much matter what it attempts to do: it is a failure. (Although the topic of what makes a book either a success or a failure is a complicated one; that’s a topic I hope to dig into over time as these reviews continue).

Today, though, I want to speak about serious vs fluff. Lord of the Rings is serious. The Sword of Shana is fluff (it is also poorly done , but that’s not relevant). What makes LOTR serious while SOS (and, yes, someone please send help ASAP) is fluff? Intent, complexity, characterization, congruence between aim of the novel, tone of the language, originality of the world, nuance of the characters, depth of the moral code, etc.
And Daniel cites Philip K. Dick's preferred method of future-scrying:
[B]ecause the mystical experience of writing to anticipate the future will most certainly be inaccurate, one is more likely to anticipate the future by looking to the past…and scrambling it.

since this seems to be a curfuffle post ...
OT on PaleMoon:

i've having some minor issues. PM seems to throw problems and lockups when multiple videos are being displayed, far more than Firefox ever did.

ZeroHedge, with it's multiple video ad windows, seems to crash it regularly. rather annoying.

i can 'fix' the lockup by opening TaskManager and manually closing the plugin containers that are running the vids but i don't understand why they are crashing memsegs in the first place.

Pale Moon is working fine for me. Multiple sites (ZH, VP, financial), vids, etc. Are you using the 32bit or 64?

Anonymous bob k. mando April 29, 2014 2:12 PM

64.

Anonymous bob k. mando April 29, 2014 2:43 PM

Windows 7 x64.

have just installed latest update and turned Aero off, rebooted to complete update install.

using PaleMoon with two tabs, one to ZH and one to YouTube. clicked down to latest Stockman story while running YT playlist, everything fine.

ZZTop playing in background, click ZH home, instant lock.

quite annoying.

fixed by opening TaskMan and killing container plugin.

but i AM 20% cooler than Hitler.

It is being reported:

Jesus just left Chicago, it seems he is bound for New Orleans.

I heard it on the "X"

Blogger Markku April 29, 2014 3:05 PM

Yeah, they did mention that the 64bit version is only for those with a pioneering spirit. I'm using it for now, and I haven't had problems, but I'm aware that Moonchild recommends the 32bit for now.

Bob: I said you're 30% less genocidal, so I can only assume you have already managed to kill six hundred thousand Jews while I was looking away.

Bob K,

Are you not using Flashblock, as well as Adblock?

Bob: I said you're 30% less genocidal

protip: 'genocidal' and 'cooler' are orthogonal adjectives, having nothing to do with each other.

BUT, if you want to conflate them, 30% + 20% means i'm 50% more awesome than Stalin.

oops. just crashed ZH again.

Jews?

nah. Jews may not be all that ... but i've got plenty of gentile Cultural Marxists to keep me busy.

if i run out of stakes i may ask the Kratman if i can borrow some of his crosses ( which i will disassemble as i can get a minimum of two stakes out of every cross and it's clear that the scarcity of executionary devices is going to be a problem ).

Wheeler is down thataways a bit.

i take it they're pretty painless?

So, what you're saying is, your coolness might increase as you amp up the genocide? You Hitler, you.

with it's multiple video ad windows

I haven't seen ads on my home PC's browser in years. With permission I'll post paste part of my hosts file here, which in conjunction with adblock+ does most of the dirty work.

PM seems to throw problems and lockups when multiple videos are being displayed, far more than Firefox ever did.

While I've have fewer problems with Pale Moon and video than I'd been having with Firefox and video, the problem did still occur on occasion. I've found, oddly enough, a solution to both that has worked 100% of the time for me, and I don't pretend to know why.

I open iTunes for Windows before playing any video on FF or PM. As long as it's open, I had/have no video problems in either browser. Oddly enough, this seems to hang up iTunes instead, if it's left on too long.

They are actually major pain relievers. Apply liberally.

Pretty much, yes. Adblock is almost completely painless. Flashblock requires that you manually click on a flash video you want to play.

Now, NoScript, that's a bit less painfree. But still worth it, IMO.

so ...

just caught some of History Channel's "Vikings".

wow.

the only purpose of this series is to smear Christians.

in every moral conundrum, the pagans are asserted to be correct and the Christians to be stupid and evil.

in every situation, Christians are found doing things ... that they would never do, historically.

for instance, a pagan convert who reverted to paganism is captured by 'Christians'. what is the answer of the Christians? to put him up on cross.

but ... Christians considered THEMSELVES unworthy to be crucified ( Paul is supposed to have requested to be crucified upside down for this reason ). they're going to re-enact Golgotha ( down to the spear in the side ) for an apostate?

all murders by the Viking protagonist is 'okay'. why? because we are supposed to be cheering for him. pure 'who-whom' decision making.

and remember, they're taking the side of the "Wolves of the Sea". they're taking the side murderers and rapists and thieves and cattle rustlers who were renowned and feared from the shores of the New World to Africa and the Black Sea ( the Russ royal family sports viking blood ). these men made large swathes of shoreline uninhabitable around the world due to their predations.

but the Christians ... THEY'RE the bad guys.

Christians have never been perfect in any era. but this show is clearly the work of someone serving a Satanic purpose.

re: What makes LOTR serious while SOS (and, yes, someone please send help ASAP) is fluff? Intent... etc.

I'm going to commit heresy here. LOTR was recommended to me many years ago by someone whose intelligence I respected. So, I tried it.

I was a bit concerned when I read in the preface that Tolkien had written the book in a series of letters to his son, who was in the army, with the object of making it as long as possible.

To that extent, he achieved his intent.

I couldn't finish the book. It was just silly.
