Vox Popoli: A negative indicator

Some of you may recall my observations concerning the worsening Spanish economy after seeing attractive girls who looked like normal college students working the streets in Spain. That indicator is why this story about a petty prostitution arrest made me even more suspicious about the state of the US economy than the recent GDP surprise to the downside. While this pair of North Carolina twins do have more than a hint of the methhead about them, they are also rather more attractive than one would normally expect to see in the employ of a black hustler. Fortunately, they are enough of a news item that it would appear they are not yet the norm, although it could be the twin aspect that caused them to make the national media.

Regardless, if we see more prostitution arrests being made of younger, whiter, more slender, and more attractive women, this will be a reliable indicator that a new level of economic depression has been reached. Just in case any was needed, in light of this unemployment chart from Zerohedge.

But the article says one of them was also charged with assault and B&E, so maybe they were also setting people up to be robbed or something. Or the cops saw the twin thing and figured that hook would get them some good press. Or the cop figured it was win-win: he'd get to bang twins, or he'd get a big arrest.

You're thinking like a man. To understand why a woman does something you must put yourself in her place.

The pimp serves a purpose in the mind of a whore. He makes sure she gets paid, regardles of how much he takes for himself, and he protects her from the bad johns. And he might even provide some revenge for her. Bad johns are bad for business.

Remember, few women prefer operating alone, no matter their place in life. They don't like responsibility. They really don't like consequences. Plus when push comes to shove they really can't protect themselves. Most of their behavior, good and bad, flows from those things.

I owned a taxi for five years and ran hookers for an escort service. The woman was a "madam." I was also a bodyguard for the girls. The cops hate pimps and want them dead or in prison. The local cops would also call and warn of impending raids. In the past the cops and judges policed the girls and protected them. By the way, the cops knew who I was and didn't care because I was one of the good guys.

My first thought when I heard that is "The Second Great Depression? Is that all? Because I'm reliably informed that we're already in one."

So Vox, here's my question. Do other people (at least the screenwriter of this movie) have a different definition of 'Great Depression' that you do? Or do you see hyperinflation, bread lines and rioting still coming? If so, when?

Not particularly. We already have the bread lines, it's just that most middle-class suburbanites can't see it yet because they don't hand out the bread in lines, they give the poor debit cards. The riots will start when the debit cards stop working. And deflation, not hyperinflation.

'Drop in' centers feed the homeless/vets/crazies/sex offenders that receive mental health and treatment services. But for Joe Average and his family it's the once a week and then it's slim pickings enough for three or four meals if you are very careful and frugal.

And since they represent people who might be in bread lines otherwise, it's hard to compare those apples and oranges. It looks like there are currently 47 million people on food stamps, or about 15% of the population. Someone pointed out that that's about 15,000 people per Wal-Mart -- those would be some pretty long lines.

A quick search didn't turn up what percentage of the population used soup kitchens during the GD, but it would be hard to compare that anyway, because so many more people were farmers. My farmer grandparents say times were lean, but they grew their own food, so they managed okay.

So one reason it may be worse now, even if the raw numbers don't indicate it, is that people are much less self-sufficient. Another is that they have much more debt. It's easier to get by for a while on your backyard garden and some sporadic cash jobs if you don't have a couple mortgages, a couple car loans, and a few credit cards to pay for.

In our church alone we have given out $20,000 since Jan 14, mainly for consumer bills, propane and rent (we never hand out cash, only pay bills directly after verifying the person's identification and verifying their bill). In addition, we have had almost 130 people come in to our food shelf in that same time period. That's a 50% and 100% increase respectively from what our normal traffic is. Half of those people are not the typical individuals who frequent food shelves. Things are getting bad...but of course we are located in between Flint and Saginaw MI, so we are amongst the worst of the worst. May God have mercy on us and use us to further His kingdom.

Whitehall July 27, 2014 4:02 PM: Spengler had a great column a while back where he noted that sure sign of a culture dying was when it exported its women as prostitutes. When it sells off the breeding stock, you are exiting the culture business.

Some UN agency listed Russia and Iran as leading sources of export poontang and both are collapsing demographically. On the other hand, there's Israel with a high birth rate and a low whoredom rating.

America, we're getting there.
Anonymous July 28, 2014 9:16 AM: Women no longer need to marry for financial security, so instead of acting as a prostitute within the confines of the home (trading sex for financial security) they are now free agents.

For the record, most women hate sex and will not "give it away." It's commodity. And that is why escorting has become so transparent in western culture. It's quite literally a valid career choice.
