Not content with making many young blacks feel retarded after being encouraged to attend universities beyond their intellectual capabilities, the academic left is now determined to ruin the academic reputation of those blacks who are capable of earning good grades on the Asian/White standard.

And, as with ex-alcoholics, whenever they slip up it tends to be messy.
A remarkable article on the University of Wisconsin (Madison) appeared yesterday on the John William Pope Center site. In it, UW economics professor W. Lee Hansen writes about a comprehensive diversity plan prepared for the already diversity-obsessed campus. The report, thousands of words long, is mostly eye-glazing diversity babble, filled with terms like “compositional diversity,” “critical mass,” “equity mindedness,” “deficit-mindedness,” “foundational differences,” “representational equity” and “excellence,” a previously normal noun that suffers the loss of all meaning when printed within three words of any diversity term.Oh, I doubt they missed it. I very much doubt they missed it. On the other hand, there would probably be more than a few whites in math and engineering classes, and at places like UC Berkeley, who would find themselves thinking: "you know, grading by ethnicity doesn't sound all that bad."
But Professor Hansen noticed one very important line in the report that the faculty senate must have missed when it approved this text: a call for “proportional participation of historically underrepresented racial-ethnic groups at all levels of an institution, including high-status special programs, high-demand majors, and in the distribution of grades.” So “representational equity” means quotas at all levels. And let’s put that last one in caps: GRADES WILL BE GIVEN OUT BY RACE AND ETHNICITY.

I read the article in its entirety and this stuck out: "GRADES WILL BE GIVEN OUT BY RACE AND ETHNICITY." Yes, that's the author's take but that's what they plan to do. Not everyone has the brain to go to university. Get over it.
My senior year there was a "racist" incident off campus at a popular restaurant. An acquaintance asked me to come join her (albeit via Facebook) to a rally for justice starting from what was colloquially called the diversity tree (due to the unspoken monopoly minorities had on that tree(. IIRC, I declined as I did not want to jump the gun before the formal investigation was completed and furthermore just did not care.
In the end the investigation revealed nothing that fit the true definition of the word took place. Furthermore, there was no room in the restaurant so the blacks, like others, were asked to stand in back. Oh, that tree? The day after Dear Leader was elected, there was a message disparaging him spray painted on it. No, it didn't involve the n-word or any other derivation of ethnic slur for blacks. Still, it was pretty funny to see some Leftists' heads explode, to the point university president put out a statement condemning such behavior.
While I'm on the subject, the blacks got their student union by rioting decades before I was born, picking up bricks, walking to the president's office, and threatening violence if he didn't relent.
Blacks need to correct their own culture. People who make something of themselves should be held up as the zenith of achievement to aspire, not gangbangers shoot trick ass marks and what not.

Spot on, Mr. Day. Proving to the world they are not a sinner, I mean, racist is more important to these people than the actual folks they claim to champion.

What if a student is White and South African? Now that's a contradiction in terms.

Heck, at this point they might even be able to argue they're "traditionally underrepresented," or whatever the current edu-babble may be.
My son has a 3.95 GPA in Chemistry at a prestigious Ivy league University, is also a Math Teaching Assistant on the side. We are Irish/German/Czech. He has gifted hands and wants to be a surgeon.
He tells me he has about a 25% chance of getting into Medical School because of the minorities and the wimminz who have about a 89% acceptance rate.

Same could be said about the gun grabber lobby, except these'd be more the Women's Christian Temperance angle: Never had a drink in their life and they demand you never as well, because God only knows what they* - and you - would do that first highball.
*Well, not so much them, but their presumable husbands at the time.
Talk about backfire - now they're going to have a de facto ethnic hierarchy of grades, giving rise to questions like: "Does a white-B rank higher than a black-A?"
So now we'll have GPA(b) (for black), GPA(h) (for hispanic), and GPA(pw) (for privileged whites).
Blacks need to correct their own culture.

It's at this point where all college recruits would be well-advised to mark that dash-American box on their applications, as well.
When all students are equally minority, the standard scale can make a comeback.

Which sits quite well alongside crime statistics that, in the completely unexplained and magical manner of Zimmerman alchemy, lumps them in with Caucasian.
I'll bet that the faculty senate did miss it. The faculty senate at UW-Madison, as at most large universities, is utterly disengaged. There are a small handful of people who halfway care. Most don't bother to show up to meetings. They are more interested in their research, and faculty senate is a bothersome distraction. Meanwhile, administrators run the university. A faculty senate is mostly a rubber stamp.
That said, the final report doesn't contain the offending phrase, so the faculty senate would not have been able to scrutinize it anyway, even if they'd taken the time. The sentence is from a Regents' agenda from five years earlier. That document may have served as a broad framework for the later diversity plan, but it's not something the faculty ever would have had reason to see unless they specifically went looking for it. What the faculty passed was full of institutionalisms about diversity and inclusivity, but it never mentions anything about grades.
Besides, even if the diversity provost pushed something through like this, it's a pretty meaningless document at UW-Madison anyway. The campus is so decentralized that one administrative branch can try to set a policy, but no one else ever takes notice. If you can gum up someone's budget if they don't dance to your tune, then you have power on the campus. Otherwise, people on the campus just do whatever they want, not taking any mind of any of the nonsense that is said.

Progressives are always orthogonal to reality. Always. Which is why they always produce the exact opposite of what they intend*.
They don't want discrimination based on race, and they want minorities to feel better about themselves. So, they implement policies that will inevitably lead to the following. 1) Employers will not want to hire ANY minorities with college degrees, because excellent GPAs will effectively be meaningless. Even a minority student who works his/her a** off and earns bonafide good grades will be discriminated against, because there's no way to know if those grades are genuine or "diversified." 2) The only path to self-esteem is to earn it by accomplishing things. The crappy students who get "diversified" grades will know it's bogus and feel even worse about themselves, and the good students who get good grades will never really know if they're genuine or not -- and they won't be able to stand out from the minority students who do poorly.
* Or ostensibly intend. Progressives are so consistently adept at getting the opposite of what they say they want that you have to wonder if it's actually on purpose.

I read that very differently. It sounds to me like grades will be distributed based on ethnicity, but a certain percentage of 'A' grades will go to Whites, a percentage to Asians, a percentage to Blacks.
I hope I'm wrong, but that is how i read that statement.
OK, I reread your comments VD, and see that it was your interpretation I was misunderstanding.
I am always happy to see things which speed along the decline, as I await what comes after, but it also has to be said that it has been a long time since university grades meant anything in any case.

That issue came up 20 years ago, cutting to the chase, Whites aren't Africans.
Which is why I use African (without the hyphen or 'American') to describe dangerous wild animals whether they are in Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, Haiti or of course, sub-saharan Africa.

Probably be really good money if you were one of those scouts. Find a black hispanic transgender lesbian and you could be looking at a $250k finders fee.
Your conclusion that this report requires that “GRADES WILL BE GIVEN OUT BY RACE AND ETHNICITY” has absolutely no basis in fact. In reality, there’s nothing controversial at all about this report. We should all be concerned if members of minority groups are underrepresented among elite status programs and achieve lower grades, and true equality in our society will be achieved when these disparities no longer exist. But it’s ridiculous to conclude that racially-based grade inflation will be the means used to achieve equality (rather than real equality), and no one I know has ever endorsed this idea, let alone imposed it on a university.
Get ready for black engineers who suck at engineering. Sure they can't actually design bridges, but don't you feel better about hiring them then some racist misogynistic white male?

I'm not concerned at all. In the same way I'm unconcerned that short people are under-represented in the NBA and slow people are under-represented at the Olympics.

Why not just adopt the system they use at UC Santa Cruz and Evergreen State College (Olympia, WA) where all grades are "pass" or "no pass"? That way EVERYONE is above average. /s/

I wouldn't advise my worst enemy to consider any branch of medicine in this country. Becoming an MD means becoming a debt slave and being micromanaged by the brainless C-students you blazed past in college. Tell your kid to take his talents elsewhere - America deserves the doctors that are coming up through the ranks.
Santa Cruz scrapped the pass/no pass system because graduates were having trouble getting into grad schools.
They'll just do like when I attended around 2002, and photoshop a black face in a white crowd to show the "diversity."
As a recent college graduate (no, no, you misunderstand--I'm not searching for pity), I can attest to how irritating and worthless the "campus diversity" schtick is. Half of my teachers were foreigners with poor English (good for teaching neither the American students nor those students who spoke their own broken form of English), and as such, more than half of my classes were self-taught (there were crappy American teachers, too). My conclusion? College is not worth the price of tuition--primarily because of "diversity" and public education standards. Read a ton of books on math, science, history, and philosophy, and you will typically have a better education than anybody who goes through the "higher" education system. "Affirmative grading," as Vox put it so well, is just another reason to go your own way.
This should end well. Millennials will have to implement the Kratman Plan before all the baby boomers die of natural causes if they ever want to see justice before their own middle age.
There was a funny bit in an episode of Scrubs: Turk, a black surgeon, says that he's constantly being used as a token. It was so bad in college that they used him in the picture on the college brochure -- twice, photoshopping him into a group picture in two places.

Man...maybe I just don't understand anymore, but if I were black and a recent UW-Madison grad I would be enraged that my hard earned degree had just been turned into toilet paper and all future chances to get a decent job flushed down the toilet with it. Who is going to hire someone who is black and holds one of these degrees? What self-respecting employer is going to take ANY applicants from UW-Madison that are not white or Asian? Future black applicants may be brilliant but the racial quotas won't let them be measure based on their merit and make their grades/degrees worthless. This is not even about trying to help people out anymore. This is "Diversity" as religious dogma. I agree with Liberty Portraits: the longer I look at what the Boomers have done to this country the better the Kratman Plan sounds. Except those graduating with useless degrees are becoming product managers at tech companies. Most of the ones I've had in the past 5 years have been some combination of minority, women and/or majored in english.

My sympathy is underwhelming. When my sister was in high school, she went into school one day, a few weeks after taking the ACT aptitude test, and was greeted by a bevy of congratulating teachers who told her she had gotten the 'highest score ever' on the ACT test in the history of the High School.
Now what is wrong with this picture? Oh yeah. I had gotten higher scores than her, attending the same school, 2 years earlier. But there wasn't a word said to me about it. Not a peep. So in a world where test scores (graded by a machine which is about as fucking objective as you can get) apparently magically become higher depending on how pretty you are (my sister is much better looking than me), why SHOULDN'T your chances of getting into medical school magically change depending on your race and gender? Exactly the same moral principle is being violated in both cases. Once you accept the violation of that moral principle in some cases, you've lost your best argument against it when it is violated in your case as well.

Affirmative grading has long been a practice in US universities and high schools. No one is allowed to fail, if they bother showing up. So all grades are pushed upward and there is now massive grade inflation. At my children's high school, anything lower than a GPA of 3.0 means you are probably illiterate and certainly innumerate. Anything less than a 4.0 (the grades now go up to 4.5) means you are going to a second tier college. The real grades for intelligent kids fall between a 4.0 and 4.5. Due to grade inflation, and the jamming of all intelligent students into this very narrow range, a single point on a single test is almost certain to vary your class standing. The system has already gone into contortions to keep everyone making "good" grades with no drop outs.

No. My sister is a number of things, including severely lacking in gratitude for the fact that I once saved her from becoming severely disfigured and blinded, and puts her social status over the wellbeing of her children, but she was not involved with my boyfriend.
