Sanity does not prevail long

At this point, I'm rather looking forward to seeing the idiot Vikings get shellacked again. I don't think this decision to deactivate AD again, this time indefinitely, is going to go over well with the Vikings fan base. It certainly hasn't gone over well with the Vikings fans in the Day household:
The Minnesota Vikings placed Adrian Peterson on the Exempt/Commissioner's Permission list, requiring the running back to abstain from team activities during his child-abuse case, the team announced Wednesday morning. Peterson was indicted last Thursday on a charge that he injured his 4-year-old son by spanking him with a tree branch. He was inactive for the team's Week 2 loss to the New England Patriots but was reinstated Monday.
To be honest, I thought people were exaggerating when they talked about Goodell and Pink October being harbingers of the NFL's downfall. But the invasion of the self-appointed SJW police into what used to be a man's game is seriously killing the game in more ways that one.

As Ender commented, they could cut the number of flags being thrown in half and there would still be too many. At this point, I'd rather watch soccer than an NFL game just because most of the action one watches actually counts.

"soccer is way more gay than the NFL. ...  i must believe it so. dear god please"

Perhaps once, but not anymore, I'm afraid. I've actually seen more serious injuries on the soccer field than on the football field. One of my teammates got a pair of ribs broken in our game last week, and I've seen numerous legs broken, including one nasty compound fracture that was sticking out through the skin.

Blogger Ghost September 17, 2014 11:17 AM

I've never much cared for the game, and I don't have a favorite team, and this is still sad to me. The way they've handled every single thing was to ask the opposing team what plays they should run.

The easiest way to handle criminal matters is to leave it to law. Innocent until proven guilty, and not punished before hand. As soon as an accusation occurs, they immediately suspend/terminate. That's not the way mature rational men handle things. Wasn't there a patriots player who wasn't even fired after he was arrested for murder? They eventually fired him, but if I recall correctly (and I might not; again, not a fan of the game) it took them a few days.

Josh,

Like even Nate said, I believe yesterday, Condi is a serious fan of the game and she would be way better than Goodell.
Even a non fan of the game like me can tell Goodell is in serious contention for a Darwin Award this year, he is that ignorant and wussified.

The NFL has no right to act as a judge, jury and executioner. I realize that a corporation has the right to decide on what is proper behavior, but they really screwed the pooch on this one. Haven't read it yet, but evidently the mother of the 4 year old has released a statement today regarding this subject.

A "tree branch" sounds big and sturdy, as if AP beat the child with a "club." That would have been horrible abuse.

A less inflammatory word might be "switch" meaning a thin branch from a willow tree. Or "stick" as in the old school days song "taught to the tune of a hickory stick," And yes, both switches and sticks will sting and leave red marks, perfectly acceptable to prior generations of successful Americans and English public schoolboys.

Did the editor pick the word "branch" to reveal the truth or to push an agenda?

I just remind myself that being a football fan is about what America used to be. It's about watching the game with your dad and cheering for your team no matter how bad they are and hating your rival. It's about a house in order where the man can be a man while still being with his family. He can raise his son while mom is in the kitchen making snacks and smiling about how much they are like each other. It's about knowing exactly what you are going to do after church on Sunday and that all the other men and their sons are going to be doing the exact same thing; watching the game.

That is what I told myself Sunday but it's getting hard to believe that is what being a football fan still is.

Anonymous Giraffe September 17, 2014 11:54 AM

I was thinking on the last post that there was no evidence of sanity, but I didn't expect this. I blame those pussy Minnesotans. I'm sure their complaining is what caused this.

Blogger RC September 17, 2014 11:58 AM

The duplicity in all of this is what's most striking. An NFL player can have a half-dozen to a dozen kids with as many women, leaving them all to be raised in a matriarchy, and still be the poster boy for this cause or that, yet a man who lifts the least little finger to be a father may be imprisoned. I loved Barkley's comments on CBS this past Sunday, paraphrasing: I was raised in the South and in the South people use switches. I had worse injuries than this kid from spankings. If they used these standards my entire neighborhood would be guilty.

Barkley may be wrong on many fronts, but I respect a man who delivers straight talk.

If I were the Vikings owner and I was morally opposed to what AP did, I would literally get up there and say "I don't like what he did, but I sure as shit am not going to pay him $1 million a week to not do his job when I have no choice but to pay him anyway. How is that even a punishment? He gets to rest and not have 250 pound men knock him around. He has already has the stats to get into the Hall of Fame even if he doesn't take another snap. So until I no longer have to pay him or unless the league wants to compensate the Vikings organization in terms of salary cap, draft picks, or what have you, he will dress on Sunday has he is contractually required to"

Anonymous Almost ABD September 17, 2014 12:20 PM

My thoughts:

1. This is serious overkill by the NFL. Ever since Goodell took over, the NFL has deteriorated. First it was Pinktober, then it was penalizing/fining players for clean legal hits, and now this. The NFL may as well just announce that they are changing to the NTFL (National Touch Football League) and get it over with. Or they could go full gay and announce that all uniforms must have pink on them, and the pink gloves and towels are now mandatory for all games.

2. While Condi Rice is more masculine than Goodell, she's still lacking in one area: she has never played football. All of you who are now saying it would be better if she took over are wrong. She only has 2 qualifications for the position of NFL commissioner: she's black and she's female. If she were blind or otherwise handicapped, she would be the SJW trifecta. Women ruin everything. And even if Condi does a good job, the next woman up would surely complete the destruction of the league. Not that there is a whole lot left to destroy.

3. I would question whether the injuries were the result of AD's actions, or of that of the current boyfriend/hookup/thug that his baby mama is now with. After all, non-parental males are known to smack around kids that aren't theirs. AD made a mistake when he admitted to switching his son. He has no legal defense now, he just has to wait to see what the penalties will be.

Anonymous ck September 17, 2014 12:21 PM

If there ever was a time for it, I think that something like the USFL might just work. Better yet, the SEC should just create their own pro-league and blow the NFL out of the water.

No matter what he does, women are not going to watch NFL games, and the more he submits to thrm in order to make more money (which will NEVER appear) the less interest men will have in the game.

It's like that Jewish guy that owns the Atlanta Hawks. He wants to make money off of black Gentiles and white Gentiles, but by sucking up to whites to get their cash, he risks losing his black customer base.

I don't know what a mass-marketed, family-friendly, McDonald-ized NFL would look like, but it would no longer be of much interest to white males.

Fifteen yard completed pass. 1st down. No wait. Flag down. Pass interference? Did he really make the catch? Seven seconds of football. Time out for review of play. More stupid Simms comments. Commercials. Back to the game. No catch. No fowl. 3rd and 8. Draw play. No gain. Phil Simms said he did good to even get back to the line of scrimmage. 4th and 8, ball on twelve yard line. Phil Simms informs me that the Titans will be kicking from their end zone. The kick is away. Ball caught on appointments' 45 yard line. Punt return good for twenty yards. Wait, he may have steeped out on the Titans' 45. Play under review. More Phil Simms comments that are even more stupid. Player stayed in bounds. Opponents' ball on the Titans' 35. Time out for Titans defense to take the field. I've been watching this damn tv for 25 minutes and seen 41 seconds of football. I'll tell you what. I've seen more excitement in the Tour de France.

Hockey's still pretty good for that, despite all of the padding and helmets.

As with the NFL, it seems every year there's pressure on the NHL to implement new rules to make the game safer or less violent or whatever. So far, the only significantly stupid thing they've done is to phase out the enforcers. This has had the predictable consequence of opening up the skill players to attack and injury by dirty players. Maybe some sensitive souls out there thought the enforcers were just big meanies, but there was a reason for them.

1. Will never happen unless you blow up the SJW force multiplier - the internet. Also, cut off the flow of drugs into the body politic - prescription and otherwise. When you get that, people will awaken from their soft, flabby slumber and the correction will begin.

2. This is what the SJW's want - namely "shut up and go away farmer tom". Why surrender the field? At least make them fight for it. We have to say "this far and no farther" at some point...

Maybe the gamers have noticed this, and that's why they're pushing back against the SJWs instead of caving like everyone else has.

Blogger totenhenchen September 17, 2014 2:02 PM

Whatever. I got tired of seeing so many of these guys getting a token wrist-slap, if that, for shit that would have gotten me thrown in prison just because they put up good numbers for the local sports franchise. If you think that makes me a dick, so be it.

The NFL invited this exact predicament when it decided to pander to progs and a la carte feminists for more market share.

That the SJWs found traction on this is irritating since I can't stand the odious little pricks any more than anybody else around here, but I don't always get to choose my particular flavor of schadenfreude.

When this story first broke, I noticed that the NFL's response how it is hurting the league's ability to "attract female fans to the game." Says it all.
What's going to be funny is watching viewership plummet because heterosexual men don't want to watch men prancing around a field instead of playing real football while being preached to by morality police. And funnier, per rules of Game, women who do casually watch football like myself are being disgusted by the Gammification of it.

Anonymous Ecthelion September 17, 2014 2:14 PM

What a disappointing, short sighted decision by the NFL. With this and Ray Rice, the NFL had made their league more about the uncertain behavior of man than the game on the field. There are plenty of other avenues for drama, if one is so inclined. The alchemy of strategy, tactical maneuvering, and raw athleticism at such a high level is what the NFL offers. When they welcome the overshadowing admixture of social justice vigilantism, they dissolve what they are into the desiccated carcass of yesterday’s forgotten passions. As poor as our justice system is, they are worse: their actions are capricious and are necessarily harming those they consider victims.

Speaking of soccer, Arsenal is now playing as if they have two left feet - Tyrion Lannister’s left feet. What a dismal season of sport this is turning out to be.

Girls whacking away at each other with fiberglass or aluminum sticks and only wearing goggles. In May 2009 with around 3 minutes left in the game, Syracuse was down two goals to Cornell. Syracuse tied Cornell, and six seconds into overtime Syracuse were Div I national champs. I've been hooked ever since. In the recesses of my memory I remember Jim Brown saying that he enjoyed playing lacrosse more than football. He was right. Only sport faster is NASCAR.

NHL

Hadn't heard what everbodyhatesscott said about Datsyuk. I fear he's right, 5 more years at the most. The one saving grace the NHL has that no other popular sport stateside has is that a fair number of players are from western Europe or Russia. Go on the NHL's web site. Do you Spanish there?

Use a league's pandering to Spanish crowds as a proto-indicator of SJWs' proximity to the league.

Also, after he lockout happened in the '90s (I was and still am a diehard Penguins fan), nobody really realized hockey had come back because it flies under the radar. That may stave off the SWJs. Finally, the game is just brutal: checks are completely fine, boarding is rarely called, and the season is over 60, yes, 60 games in length! There are some exceptionally tough guys like Zednik (slightly NSFW) who take a skate to the carotid and come back to the ice later in the year. Granted, Zednik to my knowledge is the ony guy besides Clint Malarchuk to have done so.

In my office fantasy football league, we have a team run by girls who actually have a "morals clause" and refuse to draft/sign any players who have been arrested.

I snorted in laughter.

"First it was Pinktober, then it was penalizing/fining players for clean legal hits, and now this."

I was wondering when Pinktober first came about as I don't remember it as a kid at all.

The IRS ought to strip the NFL of it's non-profit status and demand back taxes.

"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion of your walks."

It's amazing how prescient he and the other Founding Fathers were in many respects.

"But that isn't what the NFL is doing. Instead, they're simply blowing with the winds of popular opinion as they perceive it, which shows a decided lack of principle."

He who stands for nothing will fall for anything.

"So far, the only significantly stupid thing they've done is to phase out the enforcers."

Tie Domi was always scrapping...and nearly always lost. As you said, there was a reason for enforcers (and still is).

"2. This is what the SJW's want - namely "shut up and go away farmer tom". Why surrender the field? At least make them fight for it. We have to say "this far and no farther" at some point..."

This farther and no farther have already been crossed. It's time to cross the rubicon of pink flags and take it back.

"If it's a money league, I'm all for my opponents making decisions that way. Heck-- I'd make a fake football news blog and send them links to "arrests" of players I'm targeting."

So many black knighting possibilities with that. Now would this include pre-NFL arrests? If so, much of the league may be ineligible in theirs. For instance, Manziel was arrested on Northgate for public intox. Dropping the n-bomb to a black guy doesn't help, either.

"What's going to be funny is watching viewership plummet because heterosexual men don't want to watch men prancing around a field"

Prancing LOL!

"Back in the 1980s one of the networks (I don't remember which one) experimented with broadcasting NFL games without commentators. It didn't last very long, maybe just a few games, but it was beautiful."

Susan:
I have also read comments by people who will watch the game on mute on TV, while listening to the commentators on the radio. Don't know if that is still possible anymore.
Not only possible but somewhat easier now:
Nearly every US radio station does streaming audio, just do a Google search for [city] radio stations, then check each station's site for 'sports'/'schedule'.
Don't think ''I remember the station that did [team]'s radio calls'', check - a lot of radio has shifted around lately, it may have changed station or gone from AM to FM.
This should work anywhere in US, elsewhere, good luck.

Hooray, finally figured out my login to Google. Sigh. I hate upgrading Ubuntu versions. Gotta delete everything, fresh install.

Anyway, Anheuser Busch told the League basically to clean up the thuggery or they'll cancel their sponsorship. Viewership is fairly steady for Sunday Night Football, good for Thursday Night football (a win over last season's comedy block), and good for Monday Night Football. Good ratings.

BUT ... Sponsors pay a significant amount of the freight. That $9 billion in revenue each year is partly due to sponsorship. Radisson canceled their Vikings Sponsorship.

People are just Peak Black Enthusiasm. White fans are tiring of the thuggery. Its not women -- women LOVE LOVE LOVE thugs like the Chris Brown fans and the bondage Fifty Shades of Grey and Vampire lovers. Rather, it is fathers and White guys who have to live under a no thuggery rule who object to the special thuggery privileges for Black players.

My guess is Goodell, after going 100% All Black on orders from the owners wanting cheap labor by disposable, replaceable Black thugs; will reverse course and use various IQ sorting rules to purge the league of guys like CJ Spillers. Who had his Wonderlic revealed: four. Using the double the Wonderlic, add sixty rule that makes his IQ about 68. Not particularly good for a league wanting now to not tick off its White fans or sponsor afraid of fallout.

Blogger Whiskey September 17, 2014 6:42 PM

Let me add, the fiasco was the two game punishment, which was done by Goodell in fear of Rice playing the Race Card. So, no real punishment for a guy who knocks out a woman.

Anyone who can add two and two and get four could figure the video would get released by TMZ. They always get videos (by paying for them). But Goodell was cowed by the Race Card. Now he's paying that price.

I guess I'm confused at how you all think that this instance of Peterson getting indefinitely suspended is representative of the NFL's move towards gayness.

AD whipped a four year old bloody. A FOUR year old. He left a bloody welt on the kid's scrotum, for crying out loud. And it's not the first instance of him using excessive physical punishment on a very young child. If I were his employer - as an NFL team or otherwise - and I had a code of conduct established and the legal means to dismiss him for this reprehensible behavior, I would strongly consider it. (I say "consider" because, despite all of the things we have heard and seen in the media, I don't actually know him on a personal level...and I'd take my personal judgement of his character into consideration)

I don't disagree that the NFL has made changes for the worse under Goodell. But I don't really think suspending Peterson is one of those things.

Hell, you guys talk so much about being tough, alpha males...how about you start ripping Peterson for being a father who admittedly takes physical punishment way too far and beats the crap out of his kids. Kids. One of his many kids. Spread all around the country with several different women. Some of whom he has no interaction with. A real upstanding, honorable man who is worth defending, am I right?

Either way...it's not like this suspension really matters. The Vikings were still going to wind up on the bottom of the NFC North anyways. :)

Women aren't a ''growth market'' for football, those that like it, like it 'as is'. As seen here and from what I've heard elsewhere, they don't give a damn about 'pinktober'.
IMHO, as I've said for years, if the NFL wants to go nuts with the pink the first weekend of October, fine, whatever.
The NFL have always had it's mention 'of the outside world' (the one time they tried to avoid that was a mistake) but they went way overboard with 'pinktober'.
This push to make November, ''support the troops month'' (which I noticed last year) is equally ridiculous, a 'shout out' to those serving overseas is great, obsessing over it for a whole month is overkill.

A Titans game recap. Kickoff. Ball caught on goaline and brought out to the twenty. Flag. Blocking in back. Half the distance to the goal. Stupid comments from Phil Simms. Ten seconds of football action, time out for commercials and for the offense to take the field...

Last year's NFC championship, I was struck by the anticlimatic feeling of the kick-off. All the hype and hoopla before the game, the introductions, raising the 12th man flag, waving towels, sirens, now here comes the kick-off....... and it's a touch-back. Literally nothing happened. Angry Doug Baldwin didn't even field it, it went out the back of the end zone. Something close to half of all kickoffs are like that, and a depressing percentage of the ones that aren't touchbacks are marred by idiot penalties. It's potentially one of the most exciting plays in the game, but the league, through their rule changes, has made it almost entirely forgettable.

The NFL looks like an organization that's disconnected from feedback. Goodell is a worse commissioner than Bug Selig was for baseball, and I really didn't think that was possible.

Blogger Akulkis September 18, 2014 3:16 AM

It's not like this hasn't been a ling time coming. I turned off the NFL fifteen years ago when it became clear that the league had no interest in even addressing, let along curbing, the off-field criminal and otherwise shitty behavior of its marquee players.

I turned off the NFL and the NBA about 20 years ago when it became apparent that anytime some coach came up with an effective defensive play, that the honchos at league headquarters would change the rules to outlaw it the next year.

Since then, it's been unthinkable to have an NFL game end with a 7-14 score, or an NBA game end with a 50-55 score. Heaven forbid that a football game end with anything less than 70 total points, or a basketball game with less than 220 total points.

It's just like GPA inflationn in the schools, and it reeks.

But by Sunday night, theyll be back on the air analyzing games and showing highlights before getting back on script with the domestic abuse stuff.
Walk the talk you cowards.

The kid is right on penalties. I watched the officiating crew put GB jerseys on last week against the Jets. Just horrible calls. And it wasnt just in GB. The corruptors are bolder than ever. They even softened us up in the pre-season by giving a preview of how bad the calls would be.

But you wont see the sports show pundits scrutinizing the refs how they do the players.

But that isn't what the NFL is doing. Instead, they're simply blowing with the winds of popular opinion as they perceive it, which shows a decided lack of principle.

They gave up on principle years ago when they decided that every form of effective defense should be made illegal... on formation and tactic at a time, until now, the game is completely unrecognizable from what was played up to the mid '70's.

Same for the NBA.

All they want is high final scores.

The only reason for a fight in the NHL is the refs not calling penalty offenses by dirty players.

This issue is as dead as the one that got Donald Sterling. The thing to do now is try to head it off at the pass before it blossoms into something truly egregious. If you win there you can circle back and try to salvage individuals who've been cast aside in the rush to righteous indignation. The reaction is way over the top and dangerous because it's always bad when society gets sucked up into the mob, and this mob must be 90% or higher. It's beginning to look like a tsunami. But I'm no fan of child abuse or people who abuse them.

When it comes to child abuse, more of these things get settled as lesser offenses and swept under the rug. They attempted to do this with AD once already. Due process is no guarantee of justice. And if he did it. nail the b*******d.

Agree with commenter above, the disconnect from simple reality shows in, e.g., failure to rectify the loss of one of the game's most exciting plays, kickoff returns. They've been slamming them outta the endzone for years, who wants to see that? How much initiative or intelligence does it take to move the stupid kickoff line back ten yards, and bring big excitement back?

Why don't they? Well they're all too busy groveling and genuflecting to NOW, the AAUW, and the Fem-State to be interested in, you know, actually improving the game that pays their massively overinflated salaries.

All their asses, Goodell and the owners and commentators and everybody, need to be out on the street a.s.a.p., picking up litter alongside the roads for a couple decades until they learn a little about reality and consequences. To be replaced by actual MEN who love the game and will not cave in to every screech and accusation coming from the New Totalitarians.

Update: NFL names NYC prosecutor involved in rape case mistrial to DV round table

Lisa Friel is a real piece of walking, talking feminista trouble. And she's now on the NFL's "Domestic Violence" round table, where she can do more damage.

The NFL White Knights gotta whiteknight, I guess. They feel it is the chivalrous thing to do.

The kickoffs were altered during the first concussion/safety hysteria. You know, huge men running full speed and colliding and stuff. Can't have that. It was even discussed of tabling the kickoff altogether and automatically placing the ball at the 20 after a score, but then you'd have no more onside kicks which would ruin 4th quarters (the NFL's money quarter) so instead they just moved the ball forward 10 yards. Of course, if you can't return a kick for a score, then you have to drive the ball, increasing the stats of QBs, RBs and WRs. You know, the important guys. Fuck you, Goodell.

The whole Rice/Peterson mess showed just how much the Sports Guy is a massive liberal pansy.
Too bad, he's really entertaining, but the stuff that's on Grantland at the moment including his couple last columns is just terrible.
