Harry Potter and Game

I've written many times about how the Gamma males who write SF/F have absolutely no grasp of human socio-sexuality. Interestingly enough, aside from those writing in the Romance ghetto, the same is largely true of female genre writers:
In her latest Pottermore update, Rowling writes how she's often forced to crush the dreams of fans who nurse strange feelings for Hogwarts's sexiest Slytherin.
Read the rest at Alpha Game, although beware, there is a Woman Defending All Women Against All Implied or Perceived Criticism on the premises.

In other news, Our Friend Damien is having trouble letting go. Unfortunately, writing about me appears to be the only fiction he can manage. This will certainly amuse the Evil Legion of Evil, who are probably the only ones who truly understand exactly how much winning a Hugo Award means to me.

Wouldn't have anything to do with not doing what he said he would, right?
I understand it intellectually, of course, but I don't think I will ever truly grasp the inability of rabbits to understand that not-rabbits genuinely don't think like they do. I very much doubt that they will ever understand that my finishing 6th of 5 was the best possible outcome short of actually winning, which was never going to happen.

And it's informative to see @SFReviewsnet favoriting this tweet. It appears we'll know where not to bother sending books for review. But at least if you're looking for Pink SF/F, you'll know exactly where to go.

Damien obviously doesn't know what poetic justice is. You'd think a writer would know that term and be able to use it properly.

Wait, the wealthy sneering bad boy has a harem of devoted fans?

How could anyone have seen that coming...

Anonymous Harsh December 29, 2014 12:39 PM

It's fascinating to watch the pathological levels of projection the rabbits display. Damien Walter would no doubt have the kind of hysterical reaction to losing a Hugo he ascribes to Vox so he thinks it's natural that his enemies would, but he doesn't realize that not all men are ruled by their emotions like he is.

And I apologize for bending reality for the sake of point by implying that DW could ever be nominated for a Hugo.

Blogger JCclimber December 29, 2014 12:51 PM

Harsh, as a voter in this year's Hugos who actually read through (or tried to in some cases) the often horrible writing before voting....I'd say Damien could probably fall asleep on his keyboard and submit the resulting masterpiece and have a shot at being nominated for a Hugo.

Some of that writing was very.....sophomoric.

My mom reads romance novels, scads of them, which I think it kind of funny. What's more funny is that when you read the back cover descriptions, it clear that most of the men who end up winning the ladies have serious game. They are described with things like "quite the rudest man XXX had ever met." I just shake my head at the double-think most feminists swim in.

Anonymous Viidad December 29, 2014 1:14 PM

They just don't get how hilariously awesome 6 out of 5 is.

Well Scalzi seems to think Vox's wife isn't wholly imaginary at this point. That's progress.

For values of Progress.

I suppose there is always the possibility that Scalzi has decided, that Space Bunny was always real and that it was Vox who was the product of her deranged imagination.

That would totally work for him.

Harry/Draco is a clear example of the female fascination with male homoeroticism; does Game address this topic at any real depth?

Anonymous WaterBoy December 29, 2014 1:56 PM

Wait...it's been how long since the Hugo voting? And the wannabe novelist is still dwelling on this?

Let it go, dude. Get a life, already.

"Jerks aren't boring"

True that. Women love drama, which jerks supply in gratifying amounts.

But it's more than that. Jerks tend to be more masculine, dominant and sexually aggressive, which is what most girls crave.

But why do they crave it? Probably something to do with generations of natural selection. Maybe jerkness is a proxy for high-T / more chance of providing children / more likely to be a successful hunter-gatherer?

Blogger Pseudotsuga December 29, 2014 2:12 PM

Perhaps it's a case of sour grapes--Walters can't claim to be Hugo nominated, whereas Vox can claim this.
All ya gotta do is finish that great British novel, Mr. Walters. Don't disappoint those taxpayers who want something for their grant money!

Anonymous Steve December 29, 2014 2:12 PM

Sixtus - I've no insight into why some girls love homo fantasies, but I have noticed it tends to be a certain type of girl who is into Kirk-Spock / Potter-Malfoy / Sam-Frodo slash fiction.

Usually fat, geeky girls who can only get male attention from the sort of aspies who predominate at comic conventions or furry shindigs.

Hot girls don't seem to be interested in it at all.

Remember, Rowling is a single mum. So it is certainly possible she Mary Sue'd her own attraction triggers into her fiction, yet does not wish to admit that. Neither to her fans, nor to herself. Because equality, nurture, and other nonsense are more important than reality.

GG / Insanitybytes22's replies in the Alpha Game thread are even more hilarious than usual, she's managed to blurt out her own version of The Leader of The Pack.

Anonymous Stickwick December 29, 2014 3:47 PM

Steve: Jerks tend to be more masculine, dominant and sexually aggressive, which is what most girls crave.

That's pretty much it. Women are naturally drawn to the dominant, because we were created to be submissive. However, when a woman isn't looking for a mate, she wants a man to be pliable, so that he'll do whatever she wants. This is probably why men who aren't naturally dominant think that niceness is the key to a woman's heart. On the other hand, it's funny to observe that sometimes a woman will equate masculine/dominant with jerk, because a masculine/dominant man refuses to bend to her will.

C.S. Lewis time?

C.S. Lewis time!

And all the time—such is the tragi-comedy of our situation—we continue to clamour for those very qualities we are rendering impossible. You can hardly open a periodical without coming across the statement that what our civilization needs is more 'drive', or dynamism, or self-sacrifice, or 'creativity'. In a sort of ghastly simplicity we remove the organ and demand the function. We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honour and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful.

That would get him in the poo with the fembots for sure.

Given the quality of the "art" produced via public subsidy in the UK, we British taxpayers are probably getting a better deal out of Damo *not* finishing his novel about genderqueer astronauts, or whatever it was meant to be about.

I think it is hilarious that writers of science fiction don't grasp the concept of game.

Being science fiction writers, they should be aware of the scientific method.

they could easily test game by application of the scientific method to see if it is true or false.

It is not that hard, the concepts are easy to understand, and there are plenty of test subjects available.

It could be that J.K. Rowling doesn't get it. Or, more likely she is just working the old plausible deniability. This way she wins with the concerned parents and angry feminists while still vamping up the sex appeal of her books.

Guys like Scalzi who confess to rape, sexism, etc., are just playing out their role as "reformed" Countrrevolutionaries, Splittists, Capitalist Roaders, and other Enemies of the People as a means of demonstrating their loyalty to the Regime. By conducting these "brutally honest" (but always carefully-constructed) public Self-Examination/Self-Criticism sessions, they "come clean" to the Red Guards that maintain a constant watch for ideological enemies of the Party and People while at the same time feeding their masochistic White/Male Guilt Complex.. By "coming out" as a rapist and exploiter of women, Mr. Scalzi willingly participates in a Struggle Session, his tears of self-abasement serving as public proof of his true inner reform and enthusiastic support for the total Worker-Farmer-Intellectual-Soldier Program of the Party. and his earnest desire to more closely conform his mind and activities to the Red sunshine of truth as expressed in Mao Zedong Thought. Up with Enlightened Social Justice in Speculative Fiction! Energetically support the program of the XI Congress of Authors of Science Fiction With Socialist/Feminist Characteristics! Shibes Meadow: "Guys like Scalzi who confess to rape, sexism, etc., are just playing out their role as "reformed" Countrrevolutionaries, Splittists, Capitalist Roaders, and other Enemies of the People as a means of demonstrating their loyalty to the Regime."

In many cases people of the politically correct left live lives the opposite of what they advocate and implicitly claim to exemplify, including through the false confessional style. "We men are all guilty" is great; the pressure is on everyone, which means it's on no-one. "You in particular are guilty of these acts against these persons on these dates in these locations" means it's time to drop the false-confessional style and lawyer up.

When someone says they are a rapist it's reasonable to believe they are a rapist.

Particularly when they are involved in the camouflaging game of leftist false confession. That seems to attract people who want there to be some political cover of they ever need it, and who know very well why they might someday need it.

In her latest Pottermore update, Rowling writes how she's often forced to crush the dreams of fans who nurse strange feelings for Hogwarts's sexiest Slytherin.

Why should that be odd? I've encountered cases of fans/critics who have posted extensive vitriol as to why the author is mistaken regarding the emotions and motivations of the author's own invented fictional characters.

I believe what you're doing is known in legal terms as "appealing to facts not in evidence".

Some, or indeed all, of Vox's audience may be homophobic and/or misogynist. Why should he give a flying fuck? He's selling books and he's propagating an idea about male/female sexuality and its political and personal implications.

Does (e.g.) Ballantyne check the political correctness quotients of their customers before allowing them to buy a book? Should they? Are they responsible for the unsavoury opinions of their customers?

In my opinion it is neither possible nor desirable that they do so.

You're way out of line on this. You're attempting to hold Vox to a standard you are incapable of meeting yourself.

The Harry Potter books always had a core of SJW indoctrination with the casting of "mudbloods" as the oppressed and the advocates of "purebloods" as evil. Going out of the way to include Patels among the Hogwarts students, removing virtually any trace of religion, making Hermione the smartest character, Dumbledore as a homosexual - all these were conscious efforts at conditioning children into the SJW cause.

Assuming that those who write “Pink SF” are indeed gammas AND that Game Theory is the gold standard in understanding human socio-sexuality.

“Jerks tend to be more masculine, dominant and sexually aggressive, which is what most girls crave.”

Indeed, when a female perceives the violating of social norms as a sign of power, even if she would otherwise judge those violations as rude or flatly wrong. However, it is observably true when she experiences it on a constant basis, that rudeness wears on them, and as a result, they break off the relationship. See divorce rate.
