Of trolls and the illusion of power

A former troll explains himself:
I am going to find it difficult to tell you precisely why I was so taken by this scene and why I threw myself so enthusiastically into its underworld. The simplest and likely sufficient answer is that I was 14 years old. It all felt vaguely dangerous, vaguely revolutionary, but with ill-defined goals. Its romance was the same one that makes Randians of so many high-school sophomores. It gave the sickly sense of power one gets from finding the next button to push, laughing in a rapidly reddening face. It's no different from the power trip a bully takes at school, except now I was the powerful one and not the victim. It was something between having power for the first time and the guilt of knowing it was ill-gotten. Power, because there is nothing quite so seductive to a teenage malcontent as a world that offers belonging coupled with authority; that is secret in the way that everybody knows you're into something slightly criminal. Guilt, because it was all schoolyard. Even when it was less dangerous, it was offensive, vaguely sexist and vaguely racist and vaguely homophobic in the daring-to-transgress kind of way. Even if I wasn't better than it then, I already had the sense that I might like to be.

I can't tell you whether my experience and motives were typical or not. I am, however, certain of a few things. If there was a difference between trolling and schoolyard taunting, it was trolling's particular take on the best way to be an outsider. The prototypical rebel without a cause is either a nihilist or self-serious, disappointed by a vapid world or giving up on it entirely; in either case, he is not content to gossip while there are motorcycles to be ridden in stoic search of the real. For us, it was neither possibility: the world was the place that cared too much, but the way to be above it all was to take aim at its vanity, to embarrass those who thought themselves too composed and too in charge to ever be caught flustered by something petty. We engaged. We had a cause. Whether it was a worthwhile one was a separate issue entirely.

I don't know if that sensibility is still prevalent in theory, but if so, it no longer means what it once did. Now, as then, the victims of a concerted trolling effort are selected not only by the probable combustibility of their reaction but also by the sense that they have it coming. In the previous decade, you had it coming because you were pompous or entitled or privileged or foolish. The spirit was mischievous, and its intent was to humiliate unclothed emperors. Today, to have it coming is to expose the nakedness of masculinity or whiteness or some other sacred cow of the self-serious; the trolls these days are the red-faced ones, the ones who cannot stand to have their worldview made fun of. "Butthurt" used to be a schoolyard taunt for our marks, not us....

Trolling isn't really trolling anymore. The motive isn't sublimated. The rage is bare.
My apologies for the late start in posting today. We had a Christmas party to attend, and then there was a considerable quantity of information concerning the Great Troll Hunt to digest. I thought the article was interesting, despite its SJW slant, because it demonstrates the fundamental problem with Yama: he doesn't understand power. He doesn't understand right and wrong either, but many people don't. What sets him, and some other trolls, apart from most people who can't distinguish right from wrong is that they don't understand that people can and will hit them back much harder than they believe possible.

He's rather like Petyr Baelish in A Game of Thrones, rubbing his hands gleefully as he works undetected behind the scenes (or so he thinks), certain that he has everything under control right up to the moment that the Queen orders the guards to put their daggers to his throat. The Queen makes the mistake of not exercising her superior power, and eventually she pays the price for it.

Now, I'm hardly the Queen. But I'm also not helpless or without resources and allies. I'm also not invulnerable; Castalia House has been under a persistent cracker attack for over a month now. The difference is that I know my vulnerabilities and do what I can to harden them because I am aware that they will always be under attack by some SJW who disagrees with me.

Yama is quite clearly surprised that anyone is able to do anything to him despite the fact that he has committed counts of a crime in his state. This shows the extent to which he fails to understand the nature of power. It's one thing to fail to believe that someone is going to do anything about it, it's another to believe that no one can. But as anyone who has ever read a fantasy novel should know, the nature of ill-gotten power is that it always turns on its wielder in the end.

You do not have the right to a lawyer. Should you have the money for one, it will he removed from you. Anything you say, think, or fail to admit can and will be used against you. You will not be told under what charges you are being detained, nor allowed to confront such witnesses as may be subpoenaed to testify to your guilt, nor be informed as how much they were paid to do so. While incarcerated, you will be required to pay room and board at market rates. If you cannot afford to do so, you will be beaten. You do not have the right to medical care. You do not have the right to convalesce. You do not have the right to a funeral. Do you understand?

"But as anyone who has ever read a fantasy novel should know, the nature of ill-gotten power is that it always turns on its wielder in the end."

"Oh - Aslan, sir," said Digory turning red, "I forgot to tell you. The witch has already eaten one of those apples, one of the same kind that Tree grew from."

. . . . "Child," he replied, "that is why all the rest are now a horror to her. That is what happens to those who pluck and eat fruits at the wrong time and in the wrong way. The fruit is good but they loathe it forever after." . . . . "Things always work according to their nature. She has won her heart's desire; she has unwearying strength and endless days like a goddess. But length of days with an evil heart is only length of misery and already she begins to know it. All get what they want; they do not always like it."

"But as anyone who has ever read a fantasy novel should know, the nature of ill-gotten power is that it always turns on its wielder in the end."

Then the L-RD G-d said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever" -- therefore the L-RD G-d sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life. (Genesis 3).

Perhaps one of the most merciful acts of the Creator, blessed be He. Taking hold of and consuming the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was disastrous enough. But to consume the fruit of eternal life thereafter would have condemned us to life in a fallen state for which no redemption would have been possible for, as CS Lewis rightly observed, things always work according to their nature.

Hence, the Gracious One in His great mercy and compassion saw to it that the way to the tree of life was guarded until, at just the right time, all of us trolls would be afforded the opportunity to look upon another tree and be saved from the corruptions of this present age.

As the great philosopher said, "What is it that turns you on to the illusion of power, this thing that grabs you by the heart and makes you want to tear things down? There is no reason why I should need all this power, but if you cross me now, I'm gonna tear your whole world down."

Blogger Doom December 21, 2014 1:59 PM

Work your magic, I have no such methods at my disposal. What I do have is understanding.

I know they know they are wrong. Sniveling corruptions who already know what they do is evil. The more they feast, the hungrier they get, for there is no filling of that void. Further, I know what they eat is not my will, or way, or patience, but themselves. The ultimate cannibals, eating their very own souls. Regardless of what they say, they know. It hits them, often. They are more alone, naked, weak, and hungry than they can ever make someone else. Just as with "guards" at gulags, who thought they could "help" others by sharing their misery, only to know horror as existence.

I, as they, know the price. It is like eating from both the fruits, of knowledge and of eternal life. Only, in hell, there is no one else to attempt to cannibalize their souls through. They will be alone in their hunger and darkness. Not even a nasty smirk or snide comment to be heard from the lot of them. Alone. Alive but dead. Something they are learning here. Something I once knew better than they ever will.

My darker notions hope they never recover before their days burn out. Still, I was given a chance, and God does love them. But prices must be paid, here or there. You are probably doing some of them a favor if prosecutions and interventions go forward. At least if they recant their lies and seek wisdom in life.

Mmm, good analogy, but not in the gold. Personally, I was a fan of the moment where Ned Stark slams the little bastard up against the wall and starts squeezing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcIIJojyeh8

It serves as a nice alternate ending to the whole series:

1) Littlefinger realizes he's nowhere near as clever as he thought he was or needed to be.
2) It's really hard to outsmart a chokeslam. Strength and courage show why they are such important virtues.
3) The King's Hand just kills his wife's ex admirer, right in front of his wife.
4) The King's Hand is called to the throne to answer for kiling a minor noble and known pimp. The King wags his finger at his friend. Bad Stark, no cookie.
5) Laugh track. And everyone lives happily, except Cersei, and who cares about her?
6) Credits roll.

> The very best trolls get people to troll themselves.

Kid, back in the classic days, that was like the entry level requirement to be considered a troll, to get at least two sides to go at it with only an arguably innocent comment/question as bait; the quality of very bestness of troll was determined by how arguable said innocence was. Simple newb posing to draw out fervent differences, that was beginner stuff. Slyly adding a misstatement to bring out the grammar nazis and similar I-MUST-CORRECT-YOU! ilk as appropriate to the discussion topic, that was a decent troll. Managing to keep a dialogue going up to the point you got bored and threw out YHBT to their complete surprise, that was the win. YHL! HAND!

But these days when mindless flamers, artless vandals, and anklebiting annoyances have just about completely taken over the popular conception of 'troll', well, it's just sad. Concern trolls are about the only modern form that can properly be called trolls.

The real trolls these days can generally be found kicking off the various eating their own frenzies in the SJW world; transgendered via feminism, that's always a good easy one to start with. Or the various forms of shit disturbing that people who approve of said disturbing call "black knighting" these days; those pretty much amount to straight up classic trolling, aside from that they're often intended to have real world consequences instead of the successful deception being the end in itself.

hmmm ... maybe I should just give up on trying to preserve historical accuracy and rename myself "theblackknight". Could have some fun with that!

This is Vox's prerogative, but this seems like a lot of effort to step on a cockroach. I certainly don't know the extent to which the trolling has happened, packages to his door? Posting facts that could be used in identity theft? Cyber attacks on the Castilla house website was mentioned and that affects business, i.e. money, which is a very valid reason of course but most sites go through this especially with Russia, North Korea, China constantly at work.

Other than this if its just a bunch of messages why bother?

Anonymous trev006 December 21, 2014 4:34 PM

Remo,

Some people want way nicer things than money. Knowing that a troll is getting familiar with the idea of "consequences" is something cash just can't buy. Bonus for it all being nice and legal.

Besides that, who cares? Even if you're not someone who's quite entertained by this, like I am, the fact others are willing to pay for it isn't something outside parties have to understand. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.

Off at the margins, Larry Correia, Vox, and a whole host of people who are fully violence capable are sitting quiet, and listening intently. Engaging now is just not worth the effort, but have no doubt, the non-rabbits are the scary guys at the margins."

Ya know, reading AC and thinking back on those instances when people refused (or were unable) to perform simple math problems...I'm starting to believe there's an aspie hijack analogous to the amygdala hijack for narcissists. It's nearly the same thing, except that the anxiety comes from the unsolved problem and the apparently illogical nature of the other person.

See, the behavior makes sense to the neurotypical person. To them, "frame" control means never answering a simple, direct question in the context of a debate. But now that I understand this, I won't be hijacked, because the person is acting according to a logical system (albeit one I don't share).

Speaking of wildlife, stalking, and aggression, ever notice how flocks of birds treat predators?

Crows will chase hawks and eagles by acting as a group, using their superior manoeuverability and numbers. Song birds, in turn, will harass crows, driving them away from nesting areas.

I am not sure how to work shit-fingers into the analogy, but maybe later.

The funny thing is Vox is a liar and a stalker.

Vox is neither a liar nor a stalker, Yama. For example, I know your birthday is 6 July 1984. I know where you were born, where you graduated from high school, and so forth. I know considerably more than that now as I have received one professional report on you so far, and am waiting to receive a second, more comprehensive report later this week.

Nor will I be the only party to the criminal complaint against you. You are a criminal, you are trespassing here under a false identity despite repeatedly being told not to do so, and by your own admission, you have been in possession of child pornography. You have also threatened women and threatened their children as well.

All of these things are on the record. Soon they will be placed before the authorities responsible for investigating them. You can delete all the files off your computer you like, but you cannot hide your Verizon and Google records. And the fact that you have cyberstalked me for 56 months now, among at least 12 others, is readily confirmable here.

I'm now giving you the opportunity to turn yourself in, admit your crimes, and plead for mercy. If you do not, none will be shown to you from those you have harassed for the last 11 years. Don't think I'm the only one involved here. I have contacted those you were harassing in the past, and many of them are quite willing to swear out affadavits against you.

I'm not bluffing, Yama. This is really happening. I don't know what the eventual consequences for you will be, but I strongly encourage you to repent and turn from the path you are on before you make matters any worse for yourself.

Email is not private. Any of it. Therefore... it should never be treated as such. Hell I have never treated email as private. It was a daft assumption from the beginning.

Markku,
Seriously, your sense of humour is hilarious. And razor-like. If anyone actually knows what a razor can do that should give them pause.

Registration systems for commenting purposes to block the tenacious troll will no more stop it than verbal banning will, as shown repeatedly in the samples from other sites. It will merely re-register under another false account and continue its harrassment. The end result will be to make it more difficult for everyone else, with little to no effect on the actual target.

Yama would do well to heed the cautionary tale presented by one Dennis Markuze, a notorious stalker of atheists who was arrested and tried for online harrassment and threat-making. Though he was initially not sentenced to jail time, part of his punishment was banishment from online participation. Of course, he violated that condition by resuming his harrassing activities, was rearrested and subsequently pled guilty again.

Some people never learn. Don't be that guy, Yama.

Don't be that guy, Yama.

He's going to be that guy, and we are going to need a warning example again. It is my understanding that there had been such a warning example here just before my time. (Based on some comments. From Nate, among others.)

Some case of some people going after Vox's family. I also got the impression that the way things played out, did do the trick for many years.

But it's all forgotten now. And that is why Yama will end up doing us a big favor.

Markku: "He's going to be that guy, and we are going to need a warning example again."

Understood. It was a warning to learn from this experience and change his future ways; it's too late for the present.

In other words: Be like Mitnick, not like Markuze.
