Re-reporting

That must be one of the things they learn in journalism school. Despite being a three-times nationally syndicated columnist with Chronicle Features and Universal Press Syndicate, I am unfamiliar with the term:
Kathryn Hendley, Alex Stock and Ryan Duffin—the three friends of Jackie’s who Sabrina Rubin Erdely falsely claimed discouraged from her calling the authorities—now tell the AP that they have all been contacted by Sabrina Rubin Erdely, who is “re-reporting” her original story.

This is a bizarre idea for a number of reasons.

First, Rubin Erdely herself continues to refuse to talk to the press—or, as she said of the UVa administration, she is “stonewalling.” So she is a hypocrite.

And second—why on earth would anyone talk to her? (The AP story does not disclose whether the three friends agreed to be re-interviewed interviewed.) She revealed her profound political bias in her first article, as well as a fatal lack of professionalism. She might improve on the second part, but she’s unlikely to change the first. In fact, she might be even more invested in proving the point that, whatever happened to Jackie, there is a larger “rape culture” at the University of Virginia.
Question: how does this woman still have a job at Rolling Stone? How is it possible that they haven't fired her yet?

This Erdely broad is an Obama operative and Rolling Stone is the vehicle for the op.

In the Obama administration, these people--people who have been caught in their lies--get promotions. See Susan--it was a you-tube video--Rice as an example.

Mainstream journalism isn't even trying anymore. Maybe Rolling Stone wants to move into fiction.

Anonymous dh December 15, 2014 8:49 AM

This is one of my major complaints with the left-wing media, which I generally like reading. Rolling Stone (and many many others on the left), will just fall back on "well, look, we aren't the NYTimes, we're a cultural magazine of the counter-culture. You can't hold us to the same standard as [other entity], it doesn't make sense. We're going to fix the problems and that'll make us better".

It's the Stephen Colbert/Jon Stewart defense, which is "hey, we're just comedians". They take the plaudits when they do something good, but don't want to take the lumps when they screw up.

It's the Stephen Colbert/Jon Stewart defense, which is "hey, we're just comedians". They take the plaudits when they do something good, but don't want to take the lumps when they screw up.

They also deploy the 'entertainment' defense whenever they're criticized for mockery or belittlement or misrepresentation of an issue, as if doing something for entertainment absolves them of any wrongdoing. Which is fine, until you make a joke they find offensive, at which point it isn't entertainment, it's hate speech, and you were just raping them all over again with that joke.

I really want to like Colbert, who can be genuinely hilarious. His interview with two Occupy Wall Street protesters is perhaps the funniest video I have ever seen. I nearly died laughing). I did enjoy when he made some Asian joke and people started calling for the cancellation of the show because racism. Ah, the speed the liberals turn on their own.

Stewart I can't stand at all. He just comes off as a prick.

Anonymous NorthernHamlet December 15, 2014 9:59 AM

I'm surprised she hasn't been fired, but I'm also not surprised at how hands off some of the other news outlets have been when reporting this story. They can hardly even include a comment about possible false rape charges in longer pieces, even though that's entire crux of this issue.

It's almost like they fear if they focus on the real story, journalistic integrity, it'll mean they may be held accountable themselves in the future.

We should reserve 'broad' for fat chicks.

Chicks is an entirely different entymological line--you got your chicks, your fat chicks, skinny chicks, hot chicks, smart chicks--notice no 'dumb chicks'.

With broads is where you get yer stupid and yer dumb--as in 'stupid broad' and 'dumb broad'.
You also got yer 'fat broad' , and yer 'feminist broad' (there is no such think as a feminist chick--chicks are women, feminists are broads) .

I am thinking the difference happened in the Norman Conquest where one side had 'hot chicks' and the other side had 'dumb broads'; Hence our confusion on these things today--its historical ya know.

Anonymous Corvinus December 15, 2014 11:38 AM

"Chick" is an anglicization of Spanish chica, so it sounds inherently sexier than "broad" which, even when not applied to women, suggests thickness (and "thick", of course, has a double meaning of "fat" and "dumb").

The Detroit Lions beat the Minnesota Vikings with a field goal in the 4th quarter, but it wasn't unexpected as the Lions have been doing well recently expecially this year. Is that still 5 points on the pain scale or has that dropped recently?

On this same issue, note that Lena Dunham has never apologized to "Barry" nor made any explicit statements disavowing her allegations. Further, Barry's statement was an embarrassing, obsequious, apologetic that referred to her "cause" as "noble."

These stories will just peter out, but the MSM will make sure there is no actual reckoning. What is happening is just awful.

In a recent Bible study, we looked at the topic of leadership as demonstrated in the story of Rehoboam and Jeroboam, and using a few sources came up with the following list of how not to lead, but it seems like this can easily be applied, IMO, to those who are charged with reporting (whatever the milieu).

1. Be careless: As I Kings 11:4 says, “His (Solomon’s) wives turned his heart after other gods.”
2. Seek out “yes men”: Rehoboam refused to become a servant-leader, as the elders who served his father suggested.
3. Repeat mistakes: Jeroboam sought counsel, but then made two golden calves and quoted Aaron from centuries earlier at the base of Sinai: “Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”
4. Promote conflict and disunity.
5. Delegate to unqualified people: Jeroboam then perpetuated his bad leadership by appointing priests “from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites”
6. Refuse correction or reproof. When the man of God warned that human bones would be burned on the altar, Jeroboam tried to have the prophet seized and silenced. But the hand he stretched toward the man shriveled.
7. Practice deception. Bad leadership not only practices deception, but cannot bear to hear truth.
8. Pass it on.

I can't help but see the application not only to the liberal media, but myself as well.

Blogger JDC December 15, 2014 12:44 PM

On the Universal NFL Pain scale, it is a 0 for Lions fans (0 being how one feels after taking two Vicodin), and a 10 for Vikings fans (10 being you just sat through a full day lecture from SJW's on the topic of white privilege and it's contribution to the Patriarchy).

Vox was still a young boy when Roger Staubach completed the Hail Mary pass to Drew Pearson in 1975 thereby eliminating the Minnesota Vikings in a playoff game. But I think he may have seen the game and was already a fan. In which case that would have to be a 10 for him and nothing the Lions could do would come close to that.

DavidK - I'm a Lions fan and I'm obviously projecting (I do know that most vikings fans could care less about the Lions because they have never been a threat). The ugly truth for us is that we Lions fans have had zero to be hopeful about since Barry Sanders retired. Even though the Lions are up now we know they will face GB at the end of the season...I predict a wild card berth and a blow-out loss in the first round.

Let us live in ignorant bliss, please for the love of the patriarchy.

This is the most us Lions fans can hope for, but we'll take what we can get.

Glen Reynolds says:

"Even one rape is too many, of course, on or off of campus. But when activists and politicians try to gin up a phony crisis, public trust is likely to be a major casualty. It's almost as if helping actual rape victims is the last thing on these people's minds."

(From here: http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2014/12/14/campus-rape-uva-crisis-rolling-stone-politics-column/20397277/)

Is that really true? For example, is one road death one too many or does it serve to remind the rest of us to be vigilant about the dangers inherent in driving a car?

"Is that really true? For example, is one road death one too many or does it serve to remind the rest of us to be vigilant about the dangers inherent in driving a car?"

I mean, if you have to elect - death or not - all other things equal, yes, it is too many. But all things are never equal. So there's that.

There are lots of things to do to reduce rape on college campus. The very first thing is to tell everyone that the college will do nothing without a police report.

If the college wants to kick the males out when a report is filed, fine with me. But otherwise it's just removing due process for no gain.

Whatever happened to Jackie? I see two real options here, either she was pumped and dumped by some frat guy and felt like an utter slut the next day, or nothing at all happened and Jackie is a nutbag time-bomb waiting to explode on some poor bastard down the line.

My personal bet is option 2.

Because Rolling Stone lost what little journalistic integrity it had long ago, and is a year or two away from shuttering the print version of the rag and becoming yet another clickbait website full of SJW sympathizers writing whatever drivel they think their readers will lap up, whether it's true or false.

It is true that Glass upbraided her for inventing articles at the student newspaper when he was her editor.
