SJW review of games

It seems to me that just as we have a useful metric for dividing Blue SF/F from Pink SF/F, it would be helpful to have one that allowed people to summarize, in a single number, just how SJW a game is. Here is an initial pass at a points list, with 0 equaling not at all SJW and 10 indicating full SJW.

+1 has homosexual or bisexual character
+1 per token Black/Hispanic/Asian
+1 has Magic Negro and/or Saint Gay
+1 contains left-wing political message
+1 core plot concerns left-wing political message
+1 protagonist or sidekick are kickass waifu
+1 female developer mentioned in marketing and PR (see: J. Raymond, Z. Quinn)
+1 takes shots at Christianity or traditional Western morality

Any ideas for improvement? I was considering "+1 produced by Bioware", but that seemed too obvious and redundant.nt

Do you add each of the homosexual and bisexual characters or just a flat +1 if there is one? Yes, that did sound like a D&D question.

+1 contains anti-Christian message
+1 contains pro-Islam message

Oops, already covered the anti-Christian...ignore.

Speaking of Bioware, did anyone play 'Lord of the Rings War in the North'? It plays like a Dragon Age installment without all the gayness. Lots of the gay in Dragon Age II.

I am reposting as the first disappeared. Is it +1 for each bi or homosexual character or just a flat +1? Yes it looks like a D&D question.

Titanfall SJW score: 0

Call of Duty Ghosts score: 0

GTA Tales from Liberty City: 3?

Irony... the poster child for SJW hate actually has more minorities and gays than most other games.

DA: II scored pretty high on the SJW scale. I enjoyed the concept of playing a lifetime in one city, but it had too much crap in it. Makes me worried for DA: Inquisition. If I buy it, it'll probably be at a friend's 2nd hand store.

Anonymous indpndnt December 03, 2014 1:10 PM

A good one might be if there are explicit restrictions on certain behaviors. The SJW's hate the GTAV because you can do violence to women in it, but you can do violence to anyone. I wouldn't be surprised if SJW inspired games let you have free reign to kill those evil christian cis males but no one else.

Anonymous jack December 03, 2014 1:26 PM

Like Stickwick above second choice. But, should we even notice such trash by assigning it numerical status? I mean, like, in the day you said a perfect 10 and every guy knew what was meant. Now a 10, at least in the sjw world, means you're probably spending way too much valuable time dwelling on the worthless mundane.

Anonymous Mudz December 03, 2014 1:27 PM

Ah-hah! Relevancy!

So, lately I've been checking out and playing BioWare games.

What the hell happened? Did they involved in a tragic accident with a nuclear rainbow, or was I just too naive a teen to realise how dumbass their writing was, all across the board? It's the latter, isn't it?

I'm re-playing through KOTOR, and even here, I feel like I'm role-playing an SJW.
You can even stop on the street to call a random "Preacher" that he's 'ignorant and hateful' with zero explanation or even breaking stride.

I show up to rescue the Damsel in Distress Jedi Chick, only for her to suddenly, (after hours of dramatic pause, apparently), kung fu her way out of the prison and insult my heroics, and monologue her way through making it clear she's supposed to be the Anti-Damsel.

And I know if that if an option for 'fuck off, you stuck up tart' comes up, I'm gonna get Dark Sided for it. Good thing she's a Jedi babe, or she'd be staying home.

(Although fortunately, I don't play these games for their tard level story-telling. KOTOR still has pleasant gameplay.

But what always annoyed me is that they never actually give me the dialogue I want.

For example:

Zevran: "Blah blah blah, I'm bi-gay-sexual and I find your penis attractive. Respond."

Now what I would like to have said is: "You're gay and I hate you."

But what I actually got was: "Nah, it's cool, brah," or "Just don't bring it up again."

They just give me the most dumbass, meek, Discomforted Hetero Speak options possible. They deliberately eliminate any kind of possible entertainment for the conscientious contentious consumer.

I can tell a bitch to eat steel in Baldur's Gate (so I've been told), but I can't tell a gay dude how gay his gayness is?
I can pillage and plunder and murder, but I can't hurt a flaming homosexual's feelings? Where's the entertainment? Oh, that's right, because it's the wrong kind of Bad.

But it's a universe where liberals literally get to control the narrative. It was bound to end in tragedy.

BioWare, if you're going to put gays and all kind of sex-obsessed morons in the games because you, in your infinite wisdom, decide to target the tiniest market on the face of the earth, and least make it so the rest of of us can still get some entertainment out of it. Then I might consider buying your sequels.

(It's hilarious how they've basically stated they're targeting the most insignificant demographic at the expense of the actual majority market. Their funeral, I guess.)

Maybe that's why I never actually bothered to get the sequels to ME and DA (or even replay them). I think in my heart of hearts, I always knew the truth. BioWare gargles balls.

I stopped liking AC after the AC3. Nothing I've seen from the more recent installments have convinced me to give it another chance. It seems like every new one is set on bashing the Assassin's good points and building up the Templars as more misguided than evil.

Blogger Cataline Sergius December 03, 2014 1:41 PM

Dishonored.

+1 gay character
(some guy who "played Nancy" in sewers in Brigmore Witches. Though that is the only one, I can think of. The rest appeared to be hetro normative cis-gendered. Probably an accident and will be rectified in later games.

+1 token of indeterminate ethnicity. In Knife of Dunwall expansion pack, clearly included for that purpose alone. Billie Lurk

+0 Saint Gay. I would have to say that while fey, The Outsider does not appear to qualify. I'm surprised they missed this one.

+1 core plot concerns left-wing political message. Marxist class divisions evident through out. The Lord Regent exploits these for personal gain.

+1 Contains one left wing message. Actually contains several but I'll settle for the most ridiculous. Whales have to be captured and butchered while alive for no reason at all.

+0.5 Neither protagonist nor sidekicks are waif fu heroines. Although Billie Lurk comes close. She is however ultimately an antagonist.

+1 female developer mentioned in marketing and PR . I'm not even bothering to look because I know the answer has to be' "yes."

+2 takes shots at Christianity or traditional Western morality.

Dishonored is clearly influenced by Pullman's His Dark Materials. The Abby of the Everyman is militantly atheist while containing every possible negative trope concerning the Catholic Church. Both atheist in aesthetic and anti-christian in practice. Impressive, that took some work. In addition; the brutality of life in class divided steampunk Dunwall is self evident but it is not outside the historical precedents of the 19th century London, upon which this clearly based. However the clear malignancy of Dunwall's civilization merits a special demerit. There is no attempt to show a positive influence of Dunwall's culture on the lives of it's people.

Cataline's Verdict: 7.5 on the Vox Scale.

Anonymous karsten December 03, 2014 1:43 PM

LOVE this proposal. Frankly, it should also be applied to books, films, etc.

Not crazy about most of the extras that have been suggested in comments, but the original list is spot on.

Only one quibble: I'd render them as "-1," leaving, in the end, a minus score.

And as a complement to this, it would be great to see an inverted "+1" list favourably awarding points for any books/games/movies, etc., that exhibit traditional values.

+1 for white male gentile heterosexual hero
+1 for female characters being traditionally feminine (extra +1 if male hero unironically does need to rescue said female character)
+1 for villains being SJW types (Tribe, feminists, gays, Marxists, etc., but I repeat myself)
+1 for positive depictions of traditional moral values
+1 for positive depictions of traditional aesthetic values
+1 for positive characterizations of European heritage

etc.

Anonymous Dr. Brooklyn December 03, 2014 1:49 PM

Lemme see, from my playing of Dragon Age: Inquisition...

+1 has homosexual or bisexual character
Only counting romance options, they get 4. Plus 1 for a random agent you can bring in as help.

+1 per token Black/Hispanic/Asian
At least 3. Bonus points because one of them is supposedly the height of femininity...and is bald.

+1 has Magic Negro and/or Saint Gay
Said bald woman is the First Enchanter, so she's literally a Magic Negro. At least 2 points here.

+1 contains left-wing political message
Too many to count.

+1 core plot concerns left-wing political message
Not...really? There's a hole in the sky and you have to close it to stop a demon invasion. Although I suppose since the villain's motivation is that he didn't find the Maker in the Golden City and broke down, that could be left wing.

+1 protagonist or sidekick are kickass waifu
You can make your player character a female elf, and there's a female elf companion, so 2.

+1 female developer mentioned in marketing and PR (see: J. Raymond, Z. Quinn)
Not sure here. Didn't really follow the marketing or PR.

+1 takes shots at Christianity or traditional Western morality
Yep.

How many bonus points does it get for having a Transgendered character who you have zero option to say anything negative about?

+1 for any transexual characters
+1 if game is described as "important" (+5 if "socially aware" or similar)

-1 for any hard coded gender differences (too common for gender interchangeability to count towards sjw score by now, I think)

Anonymous AmyJ December 03, 2014 2:14 PM

+1 interspecies sex options. Dragon Age: Origins will let elves, dwarves, and humans mix it up, while Dragon Age II "limits" it just humans and elves.

Blogger Ken December 03, 2014 2:19 PM

You know, as much as I love Bioshock Infinite, I probably need to put it through the test.
*Uh...spoilers*

+1 has homosexual or bisexual character
- I'm guessing the Lutece "twins" might self-incestuous. They looked a little too pleased with each other.

+1 per token Black/Hispanic/Asian
- Yes, they existed, but they were deliberately discriminated against, and then when they took power, they killed all the white people (a thing the game calls "morally bad"). So, that's a wash.

+1 has Magic Negro and/or Saint Gay
- The leader of the resistance is not "Magic," and is clearly flawed. There are no truly gay characters (unless, again, we count the Luteces.)

+1 contains left-wing political message
- Hmmm...Religious zealotry (Christian) is bad, Wounded Knee was bad, Boxer Rebellion was bad, Racism is bad...a bit of a mixed bag.

+1 core plot concerns left-wing political message
- I don't think so. It involves playing an Alpha haunted by his past, saving a damsel-in-distress. Is she magic? Yes, but she does not fight. It felt like John Carter to me.

+1 protagonist or sidekick are kickass waifu
- Elizabeth is the most useful sidekick I've ever played, and her dialogue is interesting - that of an isolated child trying to understand the world.

+1 female developer mentioned in marketing and PR (see: J. Raymond, Z. Quinn)
- I never saw any females mentioned in the marketing.

+1 takes shots at Christianity or traditional Western morality
- Yes and no. Yes, it does take shots at the correlation between racism and Christianity that we have sometimes allowed, but it seems to make it clear that this is the aberration, not the norm. Though the ending (another spoiler) shows that the hero could not be saved for his actions, the post credits scene does make it clear that through "killing him," he was allowed redemption. It IS kind of a Christian message (through death to self, life). But that's my interpretation of it.

In the expansion, older Elizabeth goes around killing other versions of her father through other universes, but we see the message of "Seek reconciliation, not vengeance" pretty clearly.

All in all, I think it probably scores a 3 - maybe a 4 - on the scale.

OpenID thenoisyrogue December 03, 2014 2:19 PM

Blogger Krul December 03, 2014 2:20 PM

No, no, to make it useful you've got to do it the other way.

Give each game a score of 10, then -1 for each SJW trope. If it gets below, say, 6 (mileage may vary), you give it a pass.

Blogger Emmanuel Mateo-Morales December 03, 2014 2:21 PM

You know, I really wish someone would do a video series of Bioware and their games from a conservo-libertarian perspective. Because out of all the gaming companies out there, they're one of the most dogmatically beloved and SJW filled.

Anonymous Dikaios Rik December 03, 2014 2:25 PM

Let's see how GTA V fares:

has homosexual or bisexual character = +0.5?
...I can't really tell. But that's either because I wasn't paying attention or there really isn't any of note. I guess you could make a case for Trevor Philips, but that guy will pork anything, so, I'm not sure if he counts. At least it's better than GTA IV where the hardened Eastern European Serbian war vet goes off on a tirade on how a gay guy should be "proud" of himself. Yeah, because last I checked, Slavs were pretty damn hot about homosexuality /s

+1 per token Black/Hispanic/Asian = +1
Does it count if it's set in L.A.? I don't think Franklin's very token, but if we're being strict here, then ok, he's one black guy with two white old men. So yes.

+1 has Magic Negro and/or Saint Gay = 0
Franklin's pretty magical behind the wheel, but no, otherwise, no Magical Bill Cosbys or Whoopie Goldbergs. I find it rather amusing they made the resident feminazi a black woman (Franklin's aunt).

+1 contains left-wing political message = +1
Yes, yes it does. There was that one sidequest about two guys hunting immigrants down, and then they had a Mexican beat down Trevor verbally for assisting them. Then you kill the duo, one of whom only spoke Russian but was hard-on Eagles and Bombs and shit. You can't get any less subtle.
To be fair, GTA V attacks both left- and right-wing, but the left is still handled with kiddy gloves; the right are openly and obviously evil, while the left is well-meaning, but only cause harm because they're overdosed on pharmaceuticals.

+1 core plot concerns left-wing political message = 0
Nope, not that I can tell. Therein lies the strength of the plot: we're dealing with characters in GTA V, not some stupid moralistic Aesop's fable.

+1 protagonist or sidekick are kickass waifu = 0
Resounding no. The day Rockstar does something like this is the day Rockstar falls. For all of their faults, at least they understand this point damn well.

+1 female developer mentioned in marketing and PR = 0
In all my years of playing Rockstar games, I've never actually gone to look up who produced or developed their games, nor have I ever bothered to. It's not important anyway; the game stands on its own regardless of whoever made it. So, no.

+1 takes shots at Christianity or traditional Western morality = +1
...it's GTA. It ties every morality in the world to a dirty, splintered pole and fires a 120mm shell at it. Then bathes in the blood shower after.
That being said, one point that stuck with me was how Michael and Amanda stuck with their marriage through and through in spite of how shitty they were with each other. As that subplot develops, you begin to see that they really still see each other as husband and wife, even with all the affairs and flings and violence.

As for some other criteria others mentioned:
for any transexual characters = +1
There's a male-to-female transexual stripper. He's non-essential to the plot, though, so not sure if this stands.

if game is described as "important" (+5 if "socially aware" or similar) = 0
Rockstar has yet to sell a game and peddle a message with it.

for every time "oppression" is mentioned in game
Do we get to take points off for the game mocking the concept?

Final verdict: 3.5/10 OR 4.5/10 if we're being strict on the transexual thing.

Not too bad. Not bad at all.

Anonymous Daniel December 03, 2014 2:29 PM

Far Cry 2 was just plain incoherent: the Neitzche-inspired "Jackal" and ultimate assassination target ends up being a) unkillable by the player and b) a rescuer of all the people fleeing the mostly white and asian central african country. It definitely has a magical negro or two in it, and blames war on the existence of guns...but you also can wipe out a mob of handicapped black guys with headshots if you want, too. The storyline was quite simply a distraction from an otherwise fun assassination game.

Ubisoft didn't realize that you can make an open shooter without cut scenes or a pointless ,playerless grand finale. A game that is not actively anti-SJW runs the risk of being low church SJW without trying.

I guarantee that I'll be kneejerking against the first sign that Midnight Star has SJW sympathies, considering how they have both a Commander and Chief Science Officer who is a woman, as well as their chief armorer, and its emphasis on multi-cultural international advisory boards. Hero's a white man, though, so maybe Scalzi didn't make him gay.

Blogger Krul December 03, 2014 2:48 PM

+1 per token Black/Hispanic/Asian

Emphasis on "token", here. It doesn't apply to minority characters that aren't tokens. E.g. video game versions of characters like Blade, Spawn, or Cyborg.

Blogger jjc December 03, 2014 2:49 PM

I would limit the "+1 for LGBTQ , Person of color, manly woman, etc." penalties to non-player characters that you (the player) are forced to interact with in a non-trivial way.

If it's all about making or playing the games we want to play, I don't see why it's SJW if I decide I want to play a lesbian elf with magical strength as my RPG character. When it's forced on you by the game (the Life Cereal "it's supposed to be good for you") because we need to be sensitive etc. then it's a problem.

The others are spot on.

I have to give props to one section in Dragon Age Origins when I got to side with the capitalist price gouging merchant and chased off the weepy nun who was harassing him for 'exploitation'. I got discounts from the merchant as a reward.

Anonymous Ain December 03, 2014 2:52 PM

"A warrior woman would obviously count, but what about the healer girl/love interest sidekick type? Half a point, or not at all?"

Healer girls don't seem SJW to me. Same thing with archer girl. If anything, SJW's would want them to break out of their gender role.

Blogger RandalThorn December 03, 2014 2:52 PM

Hm, let's see, Final Fantasy 8

+1 has homosexual or bisexual character
No homosexuals bisexuals or any other kind of characters whatsoever, straight couple, straight couple, straight married couple as far as the eye can see.

+1 per token Black/Hispanic/Asian
Hm, Kiros Seagall, but he is not a major character or an active party character after CD1, also he is from another nation.

+1 has Magic Negro and/or Saint Gay
Everyone can use magic on the game and no gay cocksucking faggots whatsoever so nada.

+1 contains left-wing political message
None at all, the message of the story is about the passage of teenagerhood to maturity and the need for responsibility in one's life, and of course the main protagonist does not perceive him to be a hero or the good guy (not before the end of course), just someone who (as a mercenary) found himself on one side of the battlefield

+1 core plot concerns left-wing political message
Time compression is not a left-wing political message...right Nor a torn love story that was not meant to be by the parents lived on through their children, correct?

+1 protagonist or sidekick are kickass waifu
FFVIII for being such an awesome game it has this one flaw, you could really get EVERYONE to kick ass, very early in the game at that.

+1 female developer mentioned in marketing and PR (see: J. Raymond, Z. Quinn)
Nonononononononono.

+1 takes shots at Christianity or traditional Western morality
None, au contraire the family bonds are strong in this game.

0/10, now I see why this Spoony Faggot and his drone followers hate it.

I don't know, it's a Bioware game, so you kind of know you're getting that going in, but it's got a compelling plot, it's a lot more polished than the last two, the gameplay is leaps and bounds better (it's more akin to Dragon's Dogma than either of its predecessors) and even though the moralizing is heavy-handed, the characters are interesting and flawed and generally relatable.

Although it does lose points in my book because one of the companions (an openly gay Tevinter Imperium wizard) has a personal quest in which we find out his father tried to make him straight with blood magic in the most overwrought, preachy way possible.

Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate would fit most of these.

Eliot is a gay dude. Jacky Bryant is a weaker character compared to his sister. Equality in terms of physical abilities and martial arts is a key message of the game. There is a Latina woman, a black dude, and many East Asian people.

Blogger Krul December 03, 2014 3:15 PM

Jou_ma_se - Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate

Standards ought to be a bit different for fighting games. A diverse cast is important so the player can get a different experience with each character, and equality of physical/fighting ability is necessary for balance.

Anonymous Quadko December 03, 2014 3:17 PM

This made me laugh and think of Uncharted 1, and the furor over it being a "shoot brown people simulator."

So first, it's a problem if an entertainment is made up of all white characters, so they write non-white characters for their white acting troupe.
Then it's a problem that white people are playing non-white characters, "color-face" makeup, so they get melanin-appropriate people to play the parts.
Then it's a problem that geographically appropriately populations of characters are henchmen and being shot.
So we're back to stories made up of all white characters, or we just branch into "it's ok to shoot whites" or "you can only shoot people of your own melanin match".

Idioten.

http://forum.bioware.com/topic/512825-is-bioware-getting-too-politically-correct-or-do-gamers-have-to-change/

Naturally, it was closed down by a moderator, but they got 4-5 pages of discussion at least.

Well Fallout New Vegas. Hmm.

It gets four points for having two gay companion characters and a pro gay message and a gay/BI perk option for characters but it loses one do to its realistic back story. The worst and most virulent raiders come from a multicultural value after all so three I guess.

And while there are plenty of different ethnicity shown, no one is special accept for the courier, no racism except vs a separate species (Ghouls) but again 90% of the population died and I don't seen many mixed race couples so no points there

The main story is about revenge and duty, so minus one point there.

Hmm, so two points only.

Dwarf Fortress requires you to actually reproduce new living beings to populate a functioning society, so no, no social justice tropes are actually possible.

CHECK EM

+1 has homosexual or bisexual character

Everyone is heterosexual. They are even heterosexual at a distance (females can get pregnant if a male is even on the map)

+1 per token Black/Hispanic/Asian

All races are present but don't 'mix' for that token flavor. In fact it's so anti token that if you piss off one human the other humans, even if they liked you, will become hostile. As for skin colors, things in the same group tend to all be colored the same though I don't know if the rule holds true completely. DF is rather colorblind within species, though I think each nation is colored differently.

+1 has Magic Negro and/or Saint Gay

Everything that uses magic is pretty much either a necromancer or a demon. It's possible for a necromancer to be black. However, you have to examine the necromancer, view his details, and determine his skin color.

+1 contains left-wing political message

It's a perfectly opposite political message. "Top down management of resources often results in horrible, insane deaths. But you'll keep trying it because you're a terrible person who loves to manipulate the lives of creatures."

+1 core plot concerns left-wing political message

No plot

+1 protagonist or sidekick are kickass waifu

Female dwarves can fight and become heroes, but it all goes down the drain when they get pregnant and bring their infant child into battle. The horror.

+1 female developer mentioned in marketing and PR (see: J. Raymond, Z. Quinn)

Nein.

+1 takes shots at Christianity or traditional Western morality

Maybe? Gods are real and the dwarves can be very religious. Religious dwarves may be possessed by a deity they serve, etc. The cosmos is thoroughly pagan. Morality isn't much discussed, though the dwarves overactive sense of JUSTICE creates terrible and hilarious outcomes, definitely not a good portrayal of Social Justice.

Although it does lose points in my book because one of the companions (an openly gay Tevinter Imperium wizard) has a personal quest in which we find out his father tried to make him straight with blood magic in the most overwrought, preachy way possible.

So you're saying the Imperium is notoriously intolerant of gay people and openly eugenic?! But I thought Mage is Good, and trying to fix them with Tranquility is politically incorrect, because it never works! We had to get rid of the Intolerant Templars to free the mages, so they can oppress the gays!

I think broad things like overall game design demand, say, a +10-50% modifier for the final score.

(I would have suggested some kind a Pink:Blue ratio would need to be calculated for Pink Percentage, but I realised the tit-for-tat tallying process required would be inhibitory.)

Anonymous Mudz December 03, 2014 7:08 PM

Actually, I take that back. +% could be a bit soft. But it'd probably be a +5, if the game exists primarily as a tool of pink justice rather than entertainment.

In fact, shouldn't that make it an automatic fail?

Anonymous Sheila December 03, 2014 7:14 PM

Slightly OT: I'm not a gamer (& hubby plays only Panzer General and Fantasy General), but both my boys are. With the older one out of the house and not about, I have to trust to strangers when I have questions about buying a particular version of a game the younger one requests. I called GameStop today to ask a few questions and, based on past experiences with dimwit females, wanted to speak to a male employee. I called FIVE different local branches before I found a guy (who answered my questions quickly and concisely).

I've been reading all the sci-fi and gamer-gate posts in a slightly detached way. Recently, I read a book based on a brief summation and recommendation from one of my husband's friends - first book was okay, but as I moved on in the series the SJW points added up ominously. While the initial idea was interesting (using dragons during Napoleonic wars), the hammering away at SJ themes initially distracted me, then disgusted me. Now I understand what's going on and feel like I personally have a little bit of a dog in this hunt. Finding readable prose is difficult enough. Finding readable prose and an interesting story that doesn't bash me over the head with gays, wimminz, and magic negroes is getting nigh impossible.

Taking a shot for Diablo 3 and Warlords of Draenor (as a subset of WoW) for giggles.

D3:
+1 has homosexual or bisexual character
Every couple you're presented with (and aside from the Templar/Enchantress romance angle they're all minor NPC couples) are straight and (mostly) married. There's one comment from the Enchantress concerning Leah that might possibly be construed as the Enchantress lezzing out, but it could as easily be a sisterhood thing. No point here.

+1 per token Black/Hispanic/Asian
Hard to say on this one. The nephalem themselves are a Rainbow Variety Cast (East Asian wizard, Eastern European monk, 3x Western European barbarian templar & demon hunter, black African witch doctor) but they're also drawn from mostly homogeneous cultures and happen to show up on scene for adventures because they've all got Special Destinies. +0.5?

+1 has Magic Negro and/or Saint Gay
Does Tyrael count as a Magic Negro? He's just kind of arbitrarily black when he stops being totally faceless. +1.

+1 contains left-wing political message
No, everyone is too busy dying hideously to be concerned about things like treating transexuals gently. +1.

+1 core plot concerns left-wing political message
No, the core plot concerns the Devil trying to take over the world. I guess the underlying story of how humans/nephalem came to be contains some moral squidginess (both demons AND angels are mean to their horrible hybrid offspring, etc. etc.), but the grayness stems more from the grimdarkness of the setting (everything is awful and all methods of dealing with it are awful) than Marxist moral equivalence nonsense. No point.

+1 protagonist or sidekick are kickass waifu
+1 here, because Blizzard likes to serve up T&A on all playable classes and there's no distinction between male and female characters in terms of capability. Interestingly though, the two fighting wifey sidekicks (Leah and the Enchantress) are not front-line fighters--Leah is an archer (with a crossbow!) and Eirenna is a spellslinger.

+1 female developer mentioned in marketing and PR (see: J. Raymond, Z. Quinn)
Not to my knowledge. No point.

+1 takes shots at Christianity or traditional Western morality
The entire setting is a riff on Christianity/gnostic Christianity with a huge dollop of Manicheanism thrown in, but I never felt it was taking shots at it so much as taking inspiration. One of the major churches in the setting is corrupted due to demonic influence, and the Templar's backstory involves another church forcibly recruiting through torture (eugh), but this is contrast with the Crusader order that still follows a legitimate strand of the Zakarum religion and reflects it in their ethos. There's no real equivocation about having to wipe out demons, either; aside from Lilith, none of them are ever portrayed sympathetically or as "just misunderstood". No point.

Final score: 3.5. Not bad. I am however working just off what I've seen in-game; there are 933930 books that expand the universe that might have significant SJW creep.

Blogger Cee December 03, 2014 7:45 PM

World of Warcraft/Warlords of Draenor
+1 has homosexual or bisexual character
None of the major storyline characters and no questgivers I can think of off the top of my head are openly homosexual or bisexual--oh wait no, there's one character who has a Comedy Bisexual Option as part of one quest, and it's unclear whether or not that's playing off the in-game joke that blood elven men are indistinguishable from blood elven women. There's a pair of female NPCs that are also lionized by the community as being a "married" lesbian couple, but there's no dialogue from them to indicate it. And Marcus, the famous paladin hero of the in-game Steamy Romance Novel series gets it on with a man in the latest installment, and flirts with a female character with a female lifemate in the previous installment. So +1.

+1 per token Black/Hispanic/Asian
I will punt on this one because there's like thirty different sentient races in the damn game and trying to assign them to real-world racial types is a headache.

+1 has Magic Negro and/or Saint Gay
Not really.

+1 contains left-wing political message
Lots of WE SHOULD BE FRIENDS WITH THE OTHER GUYS between the two factions, but they've been set up so they're both (with the exception of the Forsaken in the Horde, really) equally heroic groups that just have a Tragic Misunderstanding leading to a long-standing cold-hot-cold-hot war. Also a lot of forced multicultural WE SHOULD ALL BE ONE FAMILY bullshit on the Horde side of things, despite the various races being mostly homogeneous and preferring their own. +1 for that.

+1 core plot concerns left-wing political message
Nah. Mostly punching bad guys and receiving loot and performing deeds of great renown. Not a lot of making ladies feel better about themselves or justifying weird sexual life choices.

+1 protagonist or sidekick are kickass waifu
See above about T&A, but just in the latest expansion we have the following major NPCs:
Yrel the kickass spacegoat waifu. I'm almost hesitant to include her though because she's being set up as a Joan of Arc character (sans, so far, awful death)--divine favor rests on her, rather than her amazingness being inherent.
Draka the kickass orc waifu. Patently awful for this one. She even lectures Thrall on how awful of him it was to not bring his pregnant, nursing wife on a suicide mission, because war is when you want to have your family by your side. ...I have no idea how orcs have survived as long as they have if they take that attitude toward war. (On the other hand, they've never much advanced beyond the "noble savage" stage of civilizational development despite having two much more advanced civilizations living right next to them. Hmmmm.)
Lady Liadrin the kickass elven waifu. Commander of a knightly order, even.
So much +1.

+1 female developer mentioned in marketing and PR (see: J. Raymond, Z. Quinn)
Not to my knowledge.

+1 takes shots at Christianity or traditional Western morality
No, not really. Other than the writers' (perhaps understandable, given they tend to go Rule of Awesome over Rule of Making Internal Sense) real lack of understanding of what the word "justice" means, traditional Western morality is treated fairly well. The Church of the Holy Light has some bad apples who fail for human reasons, but it (and all the other traditions that follow the Light, like the Sunwalkers and the draenei) is portrayed as being good and positive.

Final score: 3, but I think it needs more points for silly forcing of WOMEN IN BABBLE. Draka's speech to Thrall alone is like a dozen points in my mind even if nothing else reaches that level of stupid.

Well, since it's been mentioned, let's take a look at Assassin's Creed (first installment, not series):

Homosexual or bisexual character - 0.5

One of the targets has a scene before you go after him that implies he might be gay, but it's not made clear in the short time you see him. So, half a point.

Token Black/Hispanic/Asian - 0

With the story takeing place in 1191 and the Holy Land, you mostly see people where you'd expect them to be, in the roles you'd expect them in.

Has Magic Negro and/or Saint Gay - 0

Not in the least.

Contains left-wing political message - 0.5

Yep. The bad guys are explicity multi-culti and even cross the military lines drawn by Saladin and Richard. And despite their talk of peace and order, they are willing to murder, backstab and trick to set up an ironfisted dictatorship "for the benefit of humanity"...with themselves in the top spots, naturally. However, the protagonist is set against them and it is shown that, whatever their stated motives, they are clearly in the wrong. So half a point.

Core plot concerns left-wing political message - 0.5

See above

Protagonist or sidekick are kickass waifus - 0

Nope. Protagonist is a man and has no sidekicks.

Female developer mentioned in marketing and PR - 1

Yes, at least one.

Takes shots at Christianity or traditional Western morality - 1.5

It's outright stated that the Macguffin of the game was behind the miracles in the Bible, and several of the targets are atheists because of it. One target wants to destroy all holy books, including the Bible so they won't infect people's minds. However, all of the folks who say these things are marked as enemies, so call it one and a half.

So AC I scores a 4/8. Dang. And this entry probably leans the furthest right in the series.

It might be interesting to note that the Church of the Holy Light was Christian originally. Crosses, Latin chanting and everything.

I couldn't sort out War III - WoW lore with a microscope and fairy godparents. And I've tried.

If they made a Warcraft I game now, though, I'd probably go ape-shit for it.

It just had a much stronger dichotomy of 'army of demons and fallen souls clashing against the righteous arms of semi-divine knights', that I like. The games themselves are too old for my inner neo-whore to enjoy playing (4 unit selection, and too slow), but the aesthetic is gorgeous.

And distributors and development houses will be taken over by SJW entryists, so the games will be required to have trans characters and gay orgies if they want to get funding or distribution.

Very few games are made by half a dozen guys in a garage. Major titles take years and hundreds of people, and millions of dollars. And if we give a single inch to these bastards, they will infiltrate and ruin every game they can.

We need a rating system so that the game developers have to worry about what kind of SJW rating they will get, and how many people will refuse to buy their game if it rates too high.

That character trait only gives a negative modifier to everyone's opinion of the character that has it (other than other homosexuals) and makes that character less likely to have children with their spouse, sounds fair enough to me. (Viking characters that join the Varangian Guard have a chance of returning home a bit too 'Greek' sometimes... good for a chuckle in multiplayer games.)

If there's going to be any PC parts of Crusader Kings to complain about its the Steam Workshop content like the "Crusader Queens" mod, or the "Joan of Arc" random event (where you do admittedly get the option to turn your Not-Joan into a nun and not let her lead your armies. *shrug*)

Yeah, I have no problem with homosexual characters in Crusader Kings. Two reasons for this:

1: It's historically accurate. There were gay royalty and if they could get away with it then they'd flaunt it.

2: It's a huge disadvantage to your linage chain. If you see the homo icon come up you know you're going to have to do some serious scrambling.

There is nothing artificial or arbitrary about it. You may be butthurt about the fact that so few are interested in your Pink SF/F crap, as evidenced by continually dwindling sales in the SF/F market, but that doesn't change the fact that I have identified and described a real phenomenon.

On the other side of the world, the events you get during colonization drastically favor leaving the natives alone or assimilating them peacefully, but on the other hand colonizing a province replaces the local culture with your own as soon as the colonists arrive and the natives are ridiculously weak. Neutral.

'+1 core plot concerns left-wing political message'

It's a historical simulation that ends in the beginning of the 1800's. Your mileage may vary.

'+1 protagonist or sidekick are kickass waifu'

Female leaders can't be made into generals. +0

'+1 female developer mentioned in marketing and PR (see: J. Raymond, Z. Quinn)'

I don't know?

+1 takes shots at Christianity or traditional Western morality

Being Catholic generally involves trying to control the pope politically and abuse the power of the church. The latest update makes not being Papal Controller somewhat better but it still involves spending Papal Influence for 'favors' such as indulgences. +1

Overall not bad at all. 0/10, but has the potential to be a 3/10 or so.

Fallout New Vegas--

+1 has homosexual or bisexual character...
You have the option of playing as either a gay or lesbian character if you want, so yes. +1

+1 per token Black/Hispanic/Asian...
Too many to count. +1

+1 has Magic Negro and/or Saint Gay...
Not really. There are minorities and gays on the game but they aren't portrayed as any more talented or virtuous than anyone else.

+1 contains left-wing political message...
The Legion, the bad guys of the game, are portrayed as a bunch of intolerant sexist homophobic bigots -- and hypocrites too because they're allegedly very gay behind the scenes. +1

+1 core plot concerns left-wing political message.. Not really, it's about revenge.

+1 protagonist or sidekick are kickass waifu... One of your companions is a woman named Cass, who is of course just as tough as any man on the game. +1

+1 female developer mentioned in marketing and PR (see: J. Raymond, Z. Quinn)... not that I know of.

+1 takes shots at Christianity or traditional Western morality... not that I know of.

Plus, two bonus points for two optional gay companions. So... 6 out of 10.

Personally I found the progressive politics only mildly annoying -- the main story is still quite good overall, and the gameplay and character building are kickass. So I would still recommend the game, overall.

Sexual deviancy in a post-society breakdown universe turns up when the theme's more 'nihilism' and less 'hope'. Moxy in Borderlands springs to mind, so its less politics and more of a trope about the universe in chaos.

Christian sensibility at its finest.

Thank you.

@ Joe Author, Yes, providing consumers with information about products they're considering purchasing is exactly equal to censorship. Glad you cleared that up for us.

I couldn't sort out War III - WoW lore with a microscope and fairy godparents. And I've tried.

It's a mess. Like I said, they write by Rule of Cool, not "does this make internal sense". They've apparently hired people to keep their own lore straight and then don't bother to listen to them anyway.

But they rake in the dollars hand over fist despite it, so I don't think they see any more sense in catering to the autistic lore nerds than they do to the SJWs. (The longer I think about it, the more I think despite Blizzard's throwing dumb graphical and story bones to the SJW crowd, they're still telling a pretty traditional story and won't be budged from that.)

“If this was a left-wing blog, someone who disagreed with the blog owner as much, and as repetitively as you do would have long ago been banned.”

’Tis true that some left-wing blogs ban and spam anyone who disrupts the narrative. It is also accurate to state that a fair share of right-wing blogs engage in similar actions with an equal ferocity.

“You may be butthurt about the fact that so few are interested in your Pink SF/F crap…”

You are making an erroneous assumption— it is not “my” pink sf/f. I am merely commenting on the hilarity of this “turf war” over literature. See, this and other lists predetermines what is “acceptable”/“unacceptable” or “appropriate/inappropriate” literature. It serves as a “gatekeeper” because while people may write books that do not fit the criteria, there is outside pressure on them to conform. If this pressure becomes significant and pervasive. the results are catastrophic—literature conforms. The beauty of literature is its non-conformity.

Read and write what you want. Play and make games as you want. It’s really not that hard to figure out.

“as evidenced by continually dwindling sales in the SF/F market…”

And, despite their profit margins declining, there will be an audience for this material.

Read and write what you want. Play and make games as you want. It’s really not that hard to figure out.

I think you misunderstand. Writers are pressured to conform to left-wing messages. The purpose of this page is to poke fun at that by making a checklist of things that 'get points' with so-called SJW's.

Blogger Zaklog the Great December 06, 2014 3:39 AM

@Joe Author, since there is quite clearly pressure to conform to a leftist message, and very effective pressure, from academia, from major corporations, from government, from (mostly insane) activists, please explain why there should not be pressure from the conservative side as well? If there's "pressure" from only one side, an artist will most likely feel he simply has to conform. If there's a response from the other side, an artist will start to believe he has options. Why is this a bad thing?

Anonymous Joe Author December 06, 2014 7:19 AM

"...please explain why there should not be pressure from the conservative side as well?"

I never stated or implied that conservatives cannot or should not make efforts to exert their will. I only observed the consequences of that effort.

"If there's a response from the other side, an artist will start to believe he has options..."

"Blue" SF or "Pink" SF writers have one option...write what they want to write. I imagine he or she is not going to be influenced by what liberals or conservatives have to say about their content.

Blogger Zaklog the Great December 06, 2014 7:03 PM

Wait, if writers are not going to be influenced, then what are you rattling on about censorship or pressure on artists for? You really need to make up your mind.

The list needs to be reworked until Gone Home scores a 10/10, because it is impossible for Gone Home to be scored anything but full blown SJW.
