Corruption in New York

The other New York assemblymen were shocked, shocked, to learn that the Speaker of the Assembly, Sheldon Silver, was arrested on corruption charges:
The speaker of the New York State Assembly, Sheldon Silver, was arrested on federal corruption charges on Thursday and accused of using the power of his office for more than a decade to secure millions of dollars in bribes and kickbacks and then covering up his schemes, according to court documents.

Mr. Silver, a Democrat from the Lower East Side of Manhattan who has served as speaker for more than two decades, is accused of a range of corrupt dealings that capitalized on his official position. They include using his position to obtain corrupt payments misrepresented as referral fees from a law firm; funneling state research funds and other benefits to a doctor who in return referred asbestos claims to the law firm where the speaker worked; and secretly helping real estate developers win tax breaks.

In recent years, a steady parade of lawmakers in Albany has been charged with corruption, and the complaint against Mr. Silver outlines a capital culture rife with back-room dealing, where money and influence shape public policy for the benefit of private agendas.
I'm sure the Senators and Congressmen in Washington D.C. are much, much cleaner.

I am shocked when one of these guys gets arrested because I wonder what he did that made the system turn against him. Was he taking too big a cut?

You're not confused; that did happen.

Yes, they are saints with bloodwork as pure as the wonderful snow.

What terrible things are happening to our Jewish community in the NYC/NY, I'm still confused, the state isn't part of the Americants, right? They like succeeded or whatever. I am sure Mr. Kpck and Mr. Sheldon will rush to his defense, surely he is innocent.

The rest of the stateside TPTB/TBTF must be blackmailed beyond mention.

Did a modern Cicero craft a multi-volume Against Silver that finally brought the man down?

Blogger YIH January 23, 2015 3:58 PM

Also from Wikipedia:
Investigators said Silver failed to list the payments from the firm, Goldberg & Iryami, on his annual financial disclosure filings with the state. Similar charges involved asbestos-related referral fees that he received from the law firm Weitz & Luxenberg.

Even more amusing is that the same U.S. Attorney ( a former Schumer staffer) is investigating Andrew Cuomo (with whom Schumer, a Clinton ally, is not friendly) for corruption*. Cui Bono? Since Cuomo is widely viewed as a serious challenger to Hillary, one must suspect the Lizard Queen. On the day Jim Webb announced the formation of an exploratory committee, a "Democratic insider" leaked allegations of past misuse of campaign funds (he paid his daughter a few thousand per year for work on his website). A pattern is emerging. Perhaps the Lizard Queen doesn't relish being upset by another upstart who didn't even have to put up with Bill Clinton to get elected.

*even more amusingly, some of the speculative allegations against Cuomo involve obstruction in the case of the assault and mugging of his father-in-law by what has been described as a 17-20 white youth who was seen accompanying the father-in-law while he was showing a commercial property he owns to a potential tenant. The former police detective who arranged for the father-in-law's car to be cleaned and returned to him before the police investigation was finished is now Cuomo's personal bodyguard.

Whether he is a Jew or Gentile, it is not surprising that corruption is happening in a place with so much money and such a large, intrusive government. I think that is one reason why the Ron Paul types support smaller government.

Lost a power struggle. The only difference between the US and China in that regard is we don't execute the losers and part out their organs.

anon123,

It isn't just the kiddie fiddling hanging over her head, it is also the big donors who gave to Bill when he was traveling the world raising multi millions for Haiti relief.

They want to know where the money is, since it hasn't gone to Haiti. Isn't it considered fraud to raise money for charity under false pretenses? If the donors keep pushing, Hildabeest could finally be in some actual trouble. Mwahahahaha.

Anonymous Copperhead Joe January 23, 2015 5:34 PM

I read that they are paid $79,500 per year plus per diem.
I don't know how much the per diem is, but even if it as much as the salary they wouldn't be able to afford to live in a safe area there. This has always been odd to me. How can the Congress people afford to live in DC on their salary? It seems that they would have to accept "gifts" just to make being there worthwhile. You couldn't save anything if that salary was your only income.

A guy I worked with once remarked that if indeed I ever got the superpower to disintegrate assholes I would become lonely after a week, having wiped out humanity within the first couple of days.
I'm starting to think he had a point.
Then again, politicians and lawyers don't count.

Blogger Akulkis January 23, 2015 6:24 PM

Isn't it considered fraud to raise money for charity under false pretenses?

It's fraud to receive ANY money under ANY false pretenses.

In fact, the crime of fraud extends past money, to include receiving ANY benefit on the basis of one or more false statements.

Blogger HaroldC January 23, 2015 6:26 PM

If an attorney wanted to make real money and wasn't the least bit concerned about ethics the way to do it would be to launder money through the use of sham lawsuits against foreign shell corporations set up specifically for that purpose. Each case could be worth millions and would often even be tax exempt. The details of each case would of course be made confidential in the settlement agreements.

The United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara, was found dead in his apartment late on Sunday, a gunshot wound to his head and a 22 caliber pistol by his side along with a single shell casing.

Oh, and his man parts hacked off and stuffed in his mouth. Suicide is suspected.

" How can the Congress people afford to live in DC on their salary? It seems that they would have to accept "gifts" just to make being there worthwhile. You couldn't save anything if that salary was your only income."

The way it was set up, the service was supposed to be "worthwhile". You do a term or two then go back home and do something productive. I would be in favor of cutting the salaries of all elected and appointed government employees to the equivalent of 30 hours a week at minimum wage with no pension or health benefits.

Ugh. Not only is it just incorrect, it's tedious projection on top of that. Saying Gamergate is a "decently-funded group with a modicum of access to the media" also implicates that since this is a problem, we need to deprive wrongthinking groups of money *and* access to the internet so they'd just finally shut up.

And he doesn't even realize what he's saying. Then again, none of them do.

Well, do you believe the System has Collapsed now? When the crooks start cheating and turning on each other you know the Gravy Train has derailed. Thats also probably why all these bankers are being killed and "suicided".
I didn't even think it was possible to bankrupt The Whole World, but somehow they managed to do it. Still think greed is good?
Who would have thought that by issuing bad currency to buy up all the factories and send them to a labor camp in China and hiring peons from Third World Hellholes to do all the jobs that were left would bankrupt the System?
Its almost as if you need consumers with disposable income and taxpayers who actually have enough money to pay taxes to run a country. But thats just crazy talk right? They have a Master Plan that doesn't require Math!
Yeah, sure. OK...

"Efrati wrote in response that the Islamization of Europe was better than a Christian Europe for ethical and theological reasons – as a punishment against Christians for persecuting the Jews"

This is especially stupid to me. You think the Muslims would persecute the Jews less? You'd rather have those who want to "wipe Israel off the map" in charge versus those who created the Jewish nation? Bad bet.
