Study: Men Who Post Selfies Show Psychopathic Tendencies
Men who regularly posted photos of themselves online scored higher on a measure for narcissism and psychopathy.... The study also found that men who edited their pictures before posting also scored higher on the scales of narcissism and self-objectification.
For no particular reason, you understand. And in other SFWA-related news, it appears that the services of the Toad of Tor may no longer be required by Tor Books:

For no particular reason, you understand. And in other SFWA-related news, it appears that the services of the Toad of Tor may no longer be required by Tor Books:
Teresa Nielsen Hayden, aka the repugnant and infamous cyberbully "Hapisofi" on Absolute Write, has been officially fired from the Tor staff. We received the following note from someone connected to the publisher (who must remain anonymous to prevent retaliation by Nielsen's husband Patrick who is still a big shot at Tor Books and who has supported his wife regardless of her vitriolic and unprovoked assaults on writers, presses, and organizations using her anonymous ID on Absolute Write):There is, however, some reason to doubt the accuracy of this report, given that the link is to the Tor.com staff page, not the Tor Books staff page. The two are related, but distinct corporate entities. I will update this once news of the Toad's firing is either publicly confirmed or confirmed to be false.
Teresa Nielsen Hayden is now officially off the Tor staff page. She has been removed permanently. A source close to the staff reports that the sheer amount of negative information about her on the web was the reason.

How about that? Men who post selfies online are narcissistic. Whoda thunkit?
It would be interesting to expand the scope of this study to see if there is a link to homosexuality as well. Between my wife and I, we have a handful of gay friends/acquaintances on Facebook, and they seem to be the ones posting selfies.
It's a start, even if the toad's firing only affects Tor.com. However, the credibility of that website having long ago been lost, and worse, its ties to Tor Books mean that it will be ages before I give either clicks or money, (save for Sanderson and Wright).
Any idea if this was for incompetence or was it another Requires Hate situation?

I know absolutely nothing about it. I don't even know if it is true. But it would be amusing to observe, nearly 10 years later, that I am now a science fiction editor (among other things) and she is not.

AND Psychopathic.
Psychopathy Checklist

zen0 replies: According to the checklist, psychopathy in men seems to resemble men acting like women, so.....
As well connected and supportive as her husband is at Tor, I wonder who's toes she finally stepped on to get bounced to the curb? Nasty toad. Would love to have watched her reaction to the news of her firing.
Not a good day to be a dainty ornament in her cave I imagine.

Everything is falling into place?
Note to self: expand search terms and depth on potential new hires to include selfie sites beyond standard social media (tumblr, for example). Reject all applicants who have more than one selfie.
What got her tossed at Boing-Boing?
I mean, besides a trebuchet.

No, really? But if you think that's whacked, I can top it:
Belfies! Self butt pics. One of the hottest items at CES is ''the belfie stick'', to help you snap pics of your butt. You think I'm kidding, don't you?
But what about the women who take selfies. Aren't they also narcci....oh wait, that would be redundant...snicker snicker.
BTW...wonder if that study says anything about people who "like" their own posts?
"I mean, besides a trebuchet."
Way too funny, Daniel
Anyone remember how prominent (at least until his meltdown) "male feminist" Hugo Schwyzer would post a selfie like once every thirty minutes?
I bet Jian Ghomeshi had a similar addiction.
It all adds up in the end.
ad lib:
Men who post selfies are more likely to be psychopathic narcicists, therefore women are (fill in the blank).

Your ass, your face, what's the difference?
what about women who post selfies? I have a couple of facebook friends who post selfies 10x a day!
Of course women post selfies. They're the sex that is pursued on the basis of how they look. That's going to show up in their psychology.
Men? You'd be getting into homo territory there.
>zen0 replies: According to the checklist, psychopathy in men seems to resemble men acting like women, so.....
Disagree with what I believe was your implication. I think the overlap is because both personalities require group manipulation skills for subsistence.

Next they'll tell us that guys who dunk a lot are tall.
Which is to say, women and psychopaths could both be considered parasites on a culture of healthy men (by survival strategy and therefore general inclination) except that women have wombs and psychopaths do not.
> except that women have wombs and psychopaths do not.
You just gave me a new joke to tell at dinner parties and such.
The belfie stick?! What a glaring example of society's race to the bottom.
Your test comment worked, Anonymous. And then it was deleted. See: "NO ANONYMOUS COMMENTS. Anonymous comments will be deleted."
Sorry for going off topic, but about the Charlie Hebdo thing..
Vox, your position seems to abandon multi-culturalism.. how do you envision this practically? France has 4-5 million Muslims, it's not possible to deport them without a MAJOR war. The other alternative would be forceful conversions to Christianity/atheism... yeah.. be ready to strike France out of the map.
So how would you solve this issue?

Your assumption is incorrect. And this is not the place to discuss that. If you have a question you would like to see me address, either wait until it is on topic or email me. Please don't ask off-topic questions.

eh? Requires Hate / A Cracked Moon got professional blowback? what was this?
SirThermite - The belfie stick?! What a glaring example of society's race to the bottom.
A belief that is well supported, a posteriori.
You could turn that into a real question. Are fat women who post selfies more narcissistic than health women?
@Bob,
Beyond the mass hand wringing in November, I'm not sure.
Given TNH's behaviour, I was curious if there was an incident that was finally too much for Tor.com to publicly handle. Rumor on the site Vox linked to suggests "that the sheer amount of negative information about her on the web was the reason."
Interesting. I have heard women discuss negatively men who take selfies. But if it is a clear indicator of two of the three dark triad traits would it not in fact be a turn on for many of them? Or does the Selfie demonstrate too much of those traits in too apparent a fashion that it becomes a turn off?
>You just gave me a new joke to tell at dinner parties and such.
Glad to be of service.
Scalzi - Dark Triad or Doughy Biped?
Who is writing a TV show -- who doesn't?
Who is a creepy stalker -- who isn't?
Who is married to a creepy stalker on Twitter -- who isn't?

You can't get a date and nobody wants to have sex with you
About sums it up.
"But if it is a clear indicator of two of the three dark triad traits would it not in fact be a turn on for many of them? Or does the Selfie demonstrate too much of those traits in too apparent a fashion that it becomes a turn off?"
It comes off as effeminate in the same way that metrosexual over-primping and obsession with fashion is effeminate and unmanly. Such pre-occupation with appearance is associated with homosexuals for good reason. I imagine not every woman will see such an expression of feminine traits as equally unattractive though. It really would depend on the rest of the package.
IF Teresa Nielsen Harkonnen is gone. That means Patrick couldn't save her. Which seem a bit odd, of the two of them, there is more reason to fire him.
No one is all that impressed with the talent he has developed in house. The only one most people can name off the top of their head is Scalzi and Scalzi despite Tor's promotional efforts appears to be stuck in mid-list hell.
Basically I doubt that she is actually gone. She is probably just below the radar for a while.
Vox: "There is, however, some reason to doubt the accuracy of this report, given that the link is to the Tor.com staff page, not the Tor Books staff page."
Not only that, but the Tor.com website itself still has her listed as the site moderator. Even if she was removed from the editorial staff, she's apparently still not too negative to moderate its community...at least for now.

Actually, if he's responsible for Tor.com, he's done a very good job. True, he hasn't signed anyone interesting; I'll put the 2014 books I edited up against his any day of the week. And I'll bet our new authors in 2015 are better than his. But Tor.com is one of the better sites in SF/F. I hope CH will eventually surpass it, but it's by no means bad.

Then again, the most recently moderated comment was 3 days 13 hours ago....
TNH has always given off the aura of being a marginal player who fronts as an industry insider who knows it all, and manages to accrete sycophants and fellow-travelers around them - hardly unique to book publishing, sci-fi/fantasy or genre books. You may know the kind, they can talk the talk, they know enough of the buzzwords and jargon and goings-on to come off as an expert to people who don't know any better or with whom they are ideologically aligned. They pontificate and hold forth in their little online enclaves and get very shirty when people dare to challenge them; "authors" who've barely written anything, people who greatly embellish their position at this or that publisher, wanna-bes who never were, phonies, dilettantes, etc. The ranks of SF/F lit and fandoms' "SJWs" are filled with these creatures.
Krul wins thread.
Loosely on-topic, since we're talking about psychopaths...if I were in power, feared a rebellion, preferred to be the first man in a mud village than second man in Rome, and inclined to psychopathy, then I might have the idea of releasing a few semi-serious flu viruses into the population (during flu season) in order to study the spread of infections, in case a more serious virus were needed to stem a revolution.
Scalzi - Dark Triad or Doughy Biped?
OK, that's funny.
Hey, if you've got it, flaunt it.
Can I ask a question?
What actually started the feud between you (VD) and the Nielsen-Hayden? Did you start calling her the Toad of Tor just for fun, or was there a provocation?
(I apologize in advance if this is common knowledge.)
I seem to recall reading that Jemisin initiated the conflict -- called you out in a speech or the like. You responded to her attack in kind, but did not initiate the name-calling.
Is that recollection correct?
@Zippy
You can find a partial list of negative comments against Vox from PNH listed here, in Item #2. Gives you an idea how far back this goes, too.
BTW...wonder if that study says anything about people who "like" their own posts?
If you "like" (and/or perhaps comment) on your own post, Facebook is more likely to put it onto the wall of your list of friends. What, you didn't know that Facebook doesn't put all your posts onto all your friend's timelines to read?
So, if there is something (like a link to a Vox article) that I want to get wider distribution, I'll "like" it AND comment on it after posting it.
Since I don't do selfies, I can't speak to that one, but I suspect that a lot of the selfie crowd probably do "like" their own posts.
What actually started the feud between you (VD) and the Nielsen-Hayden? Did you start calling her the Toad of Tor just for fun, or was there a provocation?
There were repeated provocations. I had no idea who she was when she began attacking me.
Scalzi - Dark Triad or Doughy Biped?
Neither. Dork triad, obviously.
I prefer to have a young lady take my selfies for me. That counts, right?
"A belief that is well supported, a posteriori"
No all puns are created equal, and this one makes mine look like a bum.
She is truly one of the most despicable people in publishing. Just a flat out horrible, mean person. She and Scalzi are birds of a very diseased feather.
