Sad Puppies: the last day

These are the final hours to register for Sad Puppies 3: The Ensaddening. January 31 is the last day to register as a supporting member of WorldCon. Here is why you might want to consider doing so even if the idea of spending $40 to poke a sharp stick in the collective eyes of the SJWs who are doing their level best to destroy the science fiction and fantasy literature you love for the next two years isn't enough in its own right.
  1. Hugo Awards are worth around $13,000 to an SJW, according to one Kameron Hurley. For a fraction of one percent of that, you can deny multiple SJWs their ability to commit Pink SF and force them to spend their time delivering pizzas instead. (Have no fear, the awards are worth absolutely nothing to us in financial terms, because the gatekeepers who value them for marketing purposes won't publish even national bestselling authors of the Right; they are far more driven by intersectional equalitarian ideology than by evil capitalist business sense.)
  2. Short of wiping their hard drives and deleting their current manuscripts, there is literally nothing you can do that upsets the SJWs more than putting the sort of right-wing writer they have spent two decades working very hard to suppress in the limelight that they seek for themselves.
  3. The more obvious our numbers, the more it encourages the moderate elements at the major publishers to rein in the left-wing inmates who have taken over the SF/F asylum. The Toad of Tor is no longer at Tor and it is unlikely that her dismissal would have taken place without the fact that people were finally standing up to her crude bullying, causing her to double-down and attract the attention of higher-ups at the publisher. Tor's German owners don't give a damn about politics or the imperative of strong female characters and they're only beginning to understand how the SJWs running their subsidiaries have let them down.
  4. It's very good value for the money. Last year, the $20 spent on a supporting membership got you the complete Wheel of Time series, the complete Grimnoire Chronicles, and sundry other works as well. Granted, it also got you a fair amount of Pink sludge, but no one is going to make you download it. The more of you that register, the more likely it is that there will be great stuff that you want to read as part of the Hugo Packet.
  5. Sarah Hoyt says: "I suggest we kick them while they’re down and make them fight for the awards and prestige they crave. Also, that we point at them and make duck noises."
  6. We have the momentum. Last year, the Dread Ilk showed up in respectable force without me doing anything more than putting up a single post with a modified version of Sad Puppies 2. This year, we're locked, loaded, and ready to be all that we can be. Trust me on that. About which more soon....
A supporting membership is $40 and gives you the right to participate this year and next year, as well as receive the material in the Hugo Packets both years. So heed the words of Wendell, our fine spokesmanatee, and end puppy-related sadness now!

Note to the Dread Ilk already on board: keep your powder dry. Registration is all that is necessary or desirable right now. The next step is in process.

Is Rolf's The Stars Came Back eligible for nomination?

Anonymous MendoScot January 30, 2015 8:15 AM

Man, that Wendell is one convincing manatee.

Anonymous VD January 30, 2015 8:15 AM

No, I don't believe so. There will be a lot of good works that are not on the slate, but I would encourage everyone to stick to it regardless. The closer everyone sticks to it, the more effective it is. Just a little more discipline last year, or to be precise, six of the 93 votes that supported Larry and did not also support Sarah Hoyt, would have had Sarah on the short story and novel ballots.

Anonymous RL January 30, 2015 8:21 AM

Vox, you finally convinced me to end puppy related sadness now. I am in.

Blogger Brad Andrews January 30, 2015 9:06 AM

It might be good to add notes on "what to do next" for those of us that did join. I did not last year, but I jumped into the pool this time and don't want to miss the next step.

OpenID malcolmthecynic January 30, 2015 9:19 AM

Hmmm, I registered a few hours ago but got no PIN. I've e-mailed to ask why. How annoying.

Blogger Vox January 30, 2015 9:19 AM

Register, then sit tight and keep your powder dry. Instructions will be coming in a few days.

Blogger Brad Andrews January 30, 2015 9:42 AM

Appreciated. Thanks.

Blogger tweell January 30, 2015 9:49 AM

Wendell convinced me to buy in as well, darn that spokes-manatee.

My email from the con representative echoes Vox. Hard to believe it in this day and age, but they do not have an automated process to provide a PIN to the registered, that's done by con volunteers manually. Expect it to take a week or two.

The cutoff for registering is January 31st, but the actual nominations are open until March.

Anonymous Alexander January 30, 2015 9:49 AM

No. 7: We're having fun.

Blogger Jack Aubrey January 30, 2015 9:50 AM

I signed up for Sad Puppies 2, and I have re-upped for SP3. Which brings up the question - as a member of both LonCon and Sasquan, do I get two nominating votes this year?

Anonymous Roundtine January 30, 2015 9:58 AM

I'm off the sidelines.

Anonymous Viidad January 30, 2015 9:58 AM

ajw308 registered both me and himself a few days ago (thanks, dude!).

However, we're haven't heard anything back yet. It's drifted into the void. Guessing it's the pin thing mentioned by tweell.

Blogger wrf3 January 30, 2015 10:01 AM

Registered a few days ago. Been prepping by reading past Hugo/Nebula winners that are new to me. Just finished Brunner's "Stand on Zanzibar" and, before that, Murphy's "The Falling Woman". Zanzibar was excellent. "Woman" was seriously dissed on another thread, but I found the style so different, and the environment so alien (here on earth!), that it kept my interest.

Blogger Vox January 30, 2015 10:03 AM

You should ask them about it. You didn't have to join Sasquan in order to vote, although you did to attend if that was your objective. So, you might have a "guest of" supporting membership to endow.

Note that you now have a vote at MidAmeriCon next year as well.

Blogger Vox January 30, 2015 10:06 AM

Keep in mind that discipline is important. Last year Sarah missed by just 5 noms because 145 people who nominated Larry didn't nominate her on the short story list. So we had no one in an easily winnable category.

Anonymous hoosiertoo January 30, 2015 10:15 AM

Ok. I'm in.

Blogger Salt January 30, 2015 10:16 AM

Being a member of LonCon doesn't allow for final voting later this year, only for Sasquan nominations if I understand it right. Can register for final voting later.

Blogger Tomas January 30, 2015 10:22 AM

Vox,

To aid with discipline, do you have a list of bloggers that are coordinating this for us to follow. I've got Sarah, Larry, Brad and you. Or are we going to have an some "official Sad Puppies Slate" which will be shared by all of them?

Or am I just getting way too excited and just need to wait for the Evil League of Evil to gives us minions are marching orders?

Blogger Vox January 30, 2015 10:24 AM

Or am I just getting way too excited and just need to wait for the Evil League of Evil to gives us minions are marching orders?

Precisely. Just register, then sit tight and wait. Marching orders are forthcoming.

Blogger Salt January 30, 2015 10:29 AM

I'm of good German stock. Bang that drum, I'll get up and march.

Anonymous Nathan January 30, 2015 10:39 AM

For those waiting for PINs, go to:

and fill out the fields for the automated PIN service.

Blogger CarpeOro January 30, 2015 10:42 AM

Being of partial Prussian stock (and black sheep of my generation that joined the military) I'm ready to march also. I'm viewing it as sort of a broad kickstarter for better grade of fiction.

Anonymous Peter Pan January 30, 2015 10:51 AM

Sad Puppies was so entertaining last year that I couldn't help but join in this year. $40 for a knife in the warren's bubble is worth it.

Anonymous MrGreenMan January 30, 2015 10:52 AM

This is even better than when Rush Limbaugh faxed me what to believe in the morning!

Puppies are not meant to be sad!

Blogger Pinakeli January 30, 2015 11:08 AM

OK, you talked me into it this time.

If I had not just been through a year without all of my paychecks I would have jumped last year (I work for a start up). The past year has been much better. I even got married for the first time!

Anonymous Giuseppe January 30, 2015 11:09 AM

Vox,
As I now consider myself a very minor member of the Evil League of Evil, I had to register.
I await orders whilst sharpening my blades in the darkness.

Anonymous Incurvatus January 30, 2015 11:23 AM

Sadly, I'm not in it for $40, but I would drop $5 (value meal throwaway money) on a crowd-funded solution to help by memberships for others.

OpenID pancakeloach January 30, 2015 11:33 AM

Please, tell me Sarah Hoyt's A Few Good Men is eligible and will be on the slate. I want to be able to call any SJWs who complain about Sad Puppies 3 a homophobic h8er. Mwahahahaha.

OpenID lostsailor32 January 30, 2015 11:37 AM

Just registered for supporting membership. First time back involved with WorldCon in over 20 years.

But, I'm not very good with marching orders...

Anonymous Doug Wardell January 30, 2015 11:48 AM

Just to be clear, if we're already members of Loncon 3 from last year, there's nothing we need to do right now, correct?

Blogger Vox January 30, 2015 11:50 AM

Please, tell me Sarah Hoyt's A Few Good Men is eligible and will be on the slate.

You missed your opportunity last year. That was the novel that missed because 8 people didn't put her on the ballot.

I'm not very good with marching orders...

Most libertarians aren't. But in this case, the orders are a massive force multiplier. That's why it's important to back the whole slate as is. Otherwise, what happens is things like last year when about half of those who supported Larry went off the reservation and ensured that neither Sarah nor anyone they supported made it.

And she would have had a good shot at winning in the story category too.

Anonymous JoeyWheels January 30, 2015 11:55 AM

Purchased my membership earlier this week.

Proud to let my voice be heard, such that it is.

I'll give it a shot. How does it go again? Left-right-left, or right-left-right? Geez, this may be more work than I bargained for...

OpenID pancakeloach January 30, 2015 12:33 PM

Argh. I forgot which one it was of hers that was on the SP2 slate. Dangit, libertarians... y u no want nice things?!

I have never done this sort of thing before and I'm over 50. I just signed up because I think it will be a lot of fun and I am already supporting a few authors I like, including Castalia House authors by purchasing and reading their e-books. Why not also try to stick it to some left-wing nut jobs by supporting this campaign?

Just signed up. Will attend if summer schedule permits. Will enjoy watching the SJWs soil themselves after Larry and Vox win. Thinking I will wear my gals and guns Hawaiian shirt!

Anonymous McOxford January 30, 2015 1:31 PM

Done and done. I went cold turkey on SciFi/fandom in 2001 and when in 2013 I stroll back in I find its a complete horror show. These people have salted earth of real value in the name of casting out their imaginary pet horrors, any opportunity for push back is much appreciated.

Anonymous Banjo January 30, 2015 1:36 PM

Just registered. Will stay tuned with picks at the ready (two puns for the price of one!)
:)

Blogger Cataline Sergius January 30, 2015 1:41 PM

I see Brad Torgersen has annoyingly recused himself.

A sweet but pointless gesture. The SJWs are already screaming he is only doing this to raise his profile.

Anonymous Noah B. January 30, 2015 1:45 PM

Who is getting this money? This isn't a case of giving money to SJW's just to vote against them is it?

Blogger Vox January 30, 2015 1:50 PM

A sweet but pointless gesture.

Precisely. There is a modest divide on the Right between those who believe it is possible to talk the pinkshirts round by being reasonable and setting them a good example and those who believe we would do better to burn them at the stake for their crimes against science fiction.

Our objectives are the same, it is merely the question of whether the building can be repaired or if it needs to be burned down and demolished first. I am open to convincing, of course, but I see absolutely no sign that the pinkshirts will magically become reasonable simply because we stop kicking them in the teeth.

But there are no shortage of other good works that merit nomination, so I respect Brad's decision not to include his own work on Sad Puppies 3.

Blogger Vox January 30, 2015 1:52 PM

This isn't a case of giving money to SJW's just to vote against them is it?

Not really. The people running the Worldcons have shown themselves to be pretty neutral. They lean left, of course, but they are not the full-blown SJWs, for the most part.

Anonymous Noah B. January 30, 2015 1:57 PM

I figured that was the case but I hadn't seen it come up before. Alright, I got one supporting membership.

A pity. If the Hugos were still based on actual merit, Chaplain's War would have at least been nominated.

Membership purchased. Ballot locked and loaded. Bunker secured. Lipstick applied and cute little dress with matching shoes acquired (hey, I'm a girl, I want to look nice even when going to war).

Awaiting marching orders....

It is asking if I want the pubs via mail or email? Do they actually send you a paper copy of all the books?

Blogger Josh January 30, 2015 3:29 PM

Is Victoria eligible?

Blogger L. Beau January 30, 2015 3:32 PM

Membership purchased yesterday. It's forty USD well spent, especially if Sad Puppies 3 works and I get some decent reading material out of the deal!

Wendell the Manatee is such a powerful speaker, I consider it no exaggeration to call him the William Jennings Bryan of the 21st century.

Anonymous Holmwood January 30, 2015 3:35 PM

It is asking if I want the pubs via mail or email? Do they actually send you a paper copy of all the books?
It's probably asking if you want to get the convention's writeup by mail or email (A ~50-80 page magazine sized booklet in recent years IIRC). You do not get sent paper copies of the books; you do (typically) get sent ecopies of the non-film/tv nominated works. This is generally called the "Hugo Packet".

Note that last year Ann Leckie's publisher decided not to sent copies of Ancilliary Justice; many Dread Ilk likely viewed that as a bonus.

Nothing guarantees you'll be sent copies, but the WorldCon people try to work with the publishers and it usually happens. As Vox and others have noted, last year included the complete Wheel of Time and Grimnoir series. Not a bad deal.

Anonymous Valiant January 30, 2015 3:46 PM

Thank you for the response. I just registered and paid. I did not create an account however, I presume they will sending me an email with my ID number and stuff?

Cool.

Anonymous Valiant January 30, 2015 3:47 PM

Nevermind, they state that they will send me an email with my PIN.

OpenID pancakeloach January 30, 2015 3:57 PM

Last year Ann Leckie's publisher decided not to send copies of ANY of their nominated novels and provided about the first five chapters of each, as far as I could tell. Of course, that didn't stop them from winning, so they were obviously right in assuming they didn't need to offer the complete work to WorldCon's voters in order to get the votes.

IIRC, there were three, and of them the only one that was barely worth continuing with was Ancillary Justice, which I checked out from the library. It really wasn't that good, but I did want to know how it ended. (Disappointingly.)

Anonymous Salt January 30, 2015 4:04 PM

So, Ilk, march or form a Sad Puppies conga line through the Halls of Sasquan?

Blogger Vox January 30, 2015 4:14 PM

Is Victoria eligible?

Yes.

Blogger Josh January 30, 2015 4:32 PM

Yes.

Hot damn, that would be the greatest Hugo nominee for exploding SJW heads.

Blogger Franz Lionheart January 30, 2015 4:54 PM

Correct. I have been Loncon supporting member, and the Sasquan admins have already sent me my PIN number a few days ago.

However, Vox :

Sad Puppies: the last day
These are the final hours

Is it not valid until 31st January? Saturday, not Friday? Mrs. Lionheart might still be interested to follow her husband.

Blogger Vox January 30, 2015 4:59 PM

Is it not valid until 31st January?

Yes, Mrs. Lionheart has a little more time. But this will be my last registration post.

Anonymous SLS January 30, 2015 5:48 PM

Registered. Last year was so much fun to watch that I wanted to join in this year. I can't resist a sad puppy. And Wendell! What an amazing manatee!

Anonymous FP January 30, 2015 5:59 PM

Victoria sells it more than the manatee.

Blogger Vox January 30, 2015 6:01 PM

I very much doubt Victoria will be on Sad Puppies. And I am entirely certain that Mr. Lind has no idea what a Hugo Award is.

Blogger rycamor January 30, 2015 10:52 PM

OK, I'm in. Just under the bar. #DreadIlk #EvilLeagueOfEvil #SadPuppies

Blogger J Van Stry January 31, 2015 12:25 AM

I have determined who, if nominated, would cause the SJW's the most distress of ANY author, in the world, bar none:

John Norman.

He wrote a letter back in 2001 to Lotus telling of how he was discriminated against at world con, because he wrote the Gor novels.
It did not matter that he had sold millions, was published in many languages world wide, or had two movies made. He was not PC and therefore not acceptable.

Giving him a hugo would make heads spin!

Blogger J Van Stry January 31, 2015 12:25 AM

oh, link to the letter:

Anonymous roo_ster January 31, 2015 5:17 PM

Registered. Waiting on email with PIN. Tried yesterday but technical glitches prevented complete consummation.

I must say I am looking forward to this. I was away from SF & F for so long due to the utter drek lining the shelves at B&N. But with ebooks and independent publishing, SFF is interesting again. Even more interesting is a means to attack the SJWs who ruined it where they have set up camp.

I am of the mind that there is no compromise with the pinkshirts. Due more to experience with them than predilection, as I am generally an amiable fellow. We must knock them down and then keep kicking until the gutters overflow with their offal. Due to their lack of fixed morality and ethics, the only thing that will truly teach them is loss and pain.

Here is to cheering up the Sad Puppies and dismaying the pinkshirts.
