Super Bowl XLIX

This would be the Super Bowl open post. I'm standing by my pre-playoff prediction of New England over Seattle.

UPDATE: 14-14 at half. New England should be winning this, but Carroll's gutsy coaching is keeping Seattle in it. Great call with six seconds left; that's plenty of time for a quick shot into the end zone, then kicking the field goal.

But Belichick are making Seattle pay for Lane's injury. And Wright may be a great cover linebacker, but that's not good enough to stay with Gronk. Bad matchups on both the Gronkowski and Mathews touchdowns.

UPDATE 2: Patriots 28, Seahawks 24. Crazy game, but fun. Seattle absolutely had it, but Pete Carroll had to get cute instead of simply doing the obvious and winning the game.

Well matched so far. Brady threw away seven points though. If Seattle scores a TD as a result of the pick, it may be too demoralizing for New England to recover quickly.

Blogger YIH February 01, 2015 7:02 PM

No score 1st Q. Pats were in the red zone, Brady throws a pick in the end zone.
Also in the stream, no commercials, screen goes to SB logo and ''coverage will resume shortly''

This game has already made history: Consensus No Favorite.

Blogger Simon Jester February 01, 2015 7:09 PM

Patriots are negating Seattle speed and coverage areas. But Seattle is starting to win the individual battles. Still, they are doing it at the cost of Brady being able to move the ball.

Seattle's offense looks as bad as it has all year. No rhythm, little deep threat. Wilson is reading the coverages correctly, but there is no dynamic receiver who can break coverage to make a play.

Anonymous Harsh February 01, 2015 7:11 PM

I stand by my prediction that the team to score the most points will likely win.

Blogger Sean Carnegie February 01, 2015 7:12 PM

Go Pats!

They'll hit that shallow cross all day with Lane's injury.

If only Seattle's D was as good as you people think it is...

Blogger Guitar Man February 01, 2015 7:15 PM

Pats strike first. Pats controlled the game so far.

Blogger Sean Carnegie February 01, 2015 7:15 PM

@ Nate.

They're the fastest 11 on D in some time and, as Vox said, the most feared secondary ever. It's hard not to like them... and I'm a Niner fan.

Blogger YIH February 01, 2015 7:17 PM

7-0 Patriots. Props to NBC, pixillation and jitter are nearly unnoticeable... At full screen!

Blogger Nate February 01, 2015 7:24 PM

Sean... Secondary's aren't feared. LInebackers are feared. DL is feared.

Secondaries?

Bitch Please.

I'll just run the ball down your throat.

Blogger Nate February 01, 2015 7:26 PM

Also... its not the fastest D. ESPN did a thing on the fastest teams in the league... and believe it or not... the single fasted team in the league is the Titans.

And they suck.

The Titans D is significantly faster than Seattle's D. They just can't tackle.

Blogger Sean Carnegie February 01, 2015 7:28 PM

Nate. I'm not saying you don't have a point but Chancellor's a LB in the secondary. Seattle's just fast and they swarm to the ball. The DL is better than average although small. Teams generally don't run that well against Seattle.

If their offense was nearly as good as their D is said to be, well, this'd be a much different game.

Blogger Nate February 01, 2015 7:29 PM

Teams don't run well against seattle because most team in the NFL aren't built to run. Teams that are built to run.. like Dallas... do what they want.

Blogger Nate February 01, 2015 7:30 PM

A team like the Steelers from the early 2000s... or the Titans from the early 2000s... or the early 2000s Ravens.... They would murder these Seahawks.

Anonymous Corvinus February 01, 2015 7:39 PM

Tied up 7-7, and game almost half over. At this stage, it shouldn't be a blowout for either side.

Blogger Simon Jester February 01, 2015 7:41 PM

@Nate ... right, so any team from the 2000's; got it.

Back in reality, Seattle's offense has been carried by the running game all year. And like old school running teams, the runs up the middle open up the sideline deep routes. If Seattle can make some commitment to either developing or getting great deep threats, Seattle's offense will be a match next season.

Their defense will actually have the same issues ... a lot of players are going to be taking the last two years to the bank and will likely be moving on.

Blogger YIH February 01, 2015 7:43 PM

Guitar Man:

San Fran's built to run (have to with those WRs), can't come close to Seattle.
Philly was 9th rushing this year, lost.
KC 10th, beat Seattle
GB 11th, lost twice.
Carolina 2nd, lost.

Blogger Nate February 01, 2015 7:46 PM

"@Nate ... right, so any team from the 2000's; got it. "

@Nate, really? He is in his 8th? 9th Year? they would be crazy to resign him. Or at least to resign him to a long term deal without seriously developing some talent behind him.

As to him being the heart and soul of that team, that's a pretty silly statement to make, given the defensive leadership and Wilson.

The secondary hasn't been bad for not getting any pressure whatsoever on Brady. The LBs are the ones being exposed on coverage for a bunch of 4.5 speed guys.

Blogger Simon Jester February 01, 2015 7:58 PM

Hmm, you are moving the goalposts.

You said, heart and soul. From my perspective of living near Seattle, Wilson has grown into a leader on this team. They are his guys.

He's not the best performer on the offense this year. The running game, and in particular Lynch, is the reason Seattle is in the Super Bowl. That, and Wilson's ability to make clutch plays with his legs and arms. Like a TD pass in the last 6 seconds of the half of the Super Bowl.

Ahem.

That's an interesting adjective. Smart would have presumably been doing whatever you think was right.

Or ... maybe ... it's the Super Bowl, and the coach understands risk and reward. And throwing a back corner pass shallow in the end zone when you have a man matchup makes some sense. Maybe stupid is what that wasn't.

Anonymous Mob-Rules February 01, 2015 8:09 PM

The second half avalanche against the Rats is coming. Seattle is the best of 2ND half team this years. Brady has thrown over 30 times yet it's still tied. Chasing the legacy of being "better" than Joe Montana is his downfall.

I would say that stupid is looking at league statistics when you have a scoring opportunity.

I would say smart is asking what the statistics say once you get the man match up to play the angle into the short part of the end zone. Especially when Wilson can probably throw it away to preserve a FG try.

Not at all. The gain from the TD at that point was more important than the potential loss of the FG. Especially since a well-executed failure meant that you'd get a crack at the FG anyhow. 4 seconds or less would be a tough call. 6 seconds, it's the right call.

Blogger Nate February 01, 2015 8:28 PM

Russell Wilson is Trent Dilfer with better weapons, and it just doesn't matter. Brady is old and reckless, and Seattle's D only needs a babysitter offense in any case. The great thing for SEA is that they can swap out their offensive players for the cheapest ones available for years to come, as long as they hold that defense together.

I don't blame Hoodie for losing sight of the fact that his old man in the pocket needs to throw it less often.

Now they are going to have to push it even more. This could be an ugly end for Brady. If he pulls it out somehow with that uncertain arm, he'll end up a legend.

Anonymous 11B February 01, 2015 9:03 PM

The great thing for SEA is that they can swap out their offensive players for the cheapest ones available for years to come, as long as they hold that defense together.

The big issue will be what will Wilson want when his contract is up. If he holds out for top money, it will be hard for Seattle to keep that defense together. Since Wilson seems to do a lot of commercials, and appears intelligent, I would hope that he doesn't bankrupt the team and takes a modest salary hoping to make up for it in endorsements. He might have a chance to three-peat as well as getting the most Super Bowls by a QB. It would make him a legend. But if he holds out for Flaco type money, it won't happen.

It's weird, I don't hate Brady, but I am not rooting for him or the Pats. That is weird given how white the Pats are. Usually if a team has as many white players as the Pats I find myself pulling for them, especially if the opponent is almost nonwhite like Seattle. But just can't seem to pull for the Pats.

The is being accomplished by moving the teams to the read option, to justify and disguise the intent. It will be done by saying we need the running QB to execute our offense.

On the plus, I'm growing used to losing in the Super Bowl.

Blogger YIH February 01, 2015 9:19 PM

The Seahawks are, to date, the only NFL team to switch conferences twice in the post-merger era. The franchise began play in 1976 in the aforementioned NFC West but switched conferences with the Buccaneers after one season and joined the AFC West
It seems to be working...

Anonymous patrick kelly February 01, 2015 9:20 PM

Glad to see the Pat D reclaim some respect between the tackles, but the Hawks still got the momentum, the game is there's to lose now....

Blogger AdognamedOp February 01, 2015 9:21 PM

That Locktite glue commercial made me cry..

OpenID cailcorishev February 01, 2015 9:22 PM

Worst. Super Bowl halftime. Ever.

Why was anyone watching the halftime show, when Universal Soldier was playing on GRIT?

I really doubt that statistics can show that who gets the ball first in the second half should affect whether you go for 7 or take 3 to end the first half. But in this case, I think it's clear that the Patriots are the better team, so if the Seahawks are going to win, they're going to have to take some chances that you wouldn't in a regular game.

Blogger YIH February 01, 2015 9:24 PM

A good game. You know how rare that is?

Anonymous mattos February 01, 2015 9:25 PM

Edleman should be in conclusion protocol. He stumbled in the open field after that hit

Blogger Sean Carnegie February 01, 2015 9:26 PM

Gutsy performance by Edelman. He's looked dinged for the second half.

Blogger Simon Jester February 01, 2015 9:27 PM

> You know how rare that is?

According to NBC, not so much. They said that 5 of the last 7 were decided by less than a touchdown.

But I still have that sense too ... Too many years of blowouts.

Anonymous patrick kelly February 01, 2015 9:28 PM

Now the Pat O is playing like they want to win again...getting interesting.....

Anonymous mattos February 01, 2015 9:29 PM

Edelman was wonky after ever play after hit. I think there will questions about why he didn't see the doctor. After the game of course.

2. Actual conversation at my house;

Gunnar: What the hell does Always sell???
Mrs. von Cowtown: Tampons, and.... stuff like that.
Gunnar: Lolz.

3. I resent the hell out of some third tier purveyor of maxi pads telling my eight-year-old girl that there's something wrong with her if she can't run, throw, or fight as well as a boy. WTF???

OpenID cailcorishev February 01, 2015 9:31 PM

When Katy Perry does it... its horrible.

The interview with her before the game was kinda funny. The interviewer seemed to think she was close personal friends with Russell Wilson or something, so he/she asked her what she likes about him as a player and a person or some shit like that. Her answer was basically, "I've met him a few times and he seems nice, and I barely know what position he plays....but I'm going to be wearing some really cool costumes so let's get back to that!"

Anonymous Billy February 01, 2015 9:34 PM

Gronk, Edleman, Brady, Ninkovich. They are strong role models for kids and a balance. Basically all White kids are exposed to queerish white looking jewish men on sitcoms for masculine role models. I think its foolish for any White person to not support the Patriots when one considers the precarious position that Western Civilization is at.

Blogger Guitar Man February 01, 2015 9:36 PM

If I ever have a daughter, I'd for sure what her to be comfortable in some athletic and defensive capacity. Sure, she'd never be as good as a boy, but I wouldn't ever want her to shy away completely from anything physical -- which is the point that is often reinforced subconsciously.

I kind of think that's the overall point that gets lost in political discussions.

Blogger Nate February 01, 2015 10:06 PM

Reasons not to throw the ball:

1) You have Marshawn Lynch.

2) You've been running very well.

3) You only need 2 yards.

4) You have a minute to go and you need to burn some clock.

5) its the end of the game and the defense is tired.

reasons to throw:

YOU'RE PETE CARROL AND YOU'RE A GOD DAMN IDIOT

Blogger Gunnar von Cowtown February 01, 2015 10:06 PM

@Samuel Scott

Gunnarsdottir is an excellent competitive gymnast and swimmer. She can do all sorts of flips and walkovers and whatnot. That said, expecting her to fight as well as a male is retarded.

My point is that if this nation is ever to get back to something approaching sane gender roles, females can't be shamed for being feminine.

Oh, Pete, I hope that gum tastes bitter as tears.

Blogger YIH February 01, 2015 10:08 PM

Blogger Brad Andrews February 01, 2015 10:12 PM

I still can't get Beli-cheat out of my head.

I am sure the ratings were good, but I only caught the last part of it and watched the part where Seattle gave away their lead by doing not much of anything.

Though it should mar the whole game if it turns out they find that cheating really got them to this point. That is despicable.
