The very special victim of #GamerGate

They have really dragged out this Sarkeesian thing considerably further than I ever would have imagined. It's beyond parody at this point.
It’s a long-established tradition for TV shows to draw inspiration from real-life events. NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” is no different, and Wednesday, February 11, sees the crime drama series tackle Gamergate in an episode entitled “Intimidation Game.” The plot centers on the online harassment and kidnapping of a game developer, Raina Punjabi, modelled on controversial feminist game critic Anita Sarkeesian.

NBC’s trailer opens with Punjabi discussing the threats she’s received with police. She is set to attend an important game launch but has become the victim of an online harassment campaign. Punjabi insists that she will attend the launch, however, because not only is it a massive international event but also she refuses to give in to online hordes of anonymous, misogynistic trolls. During the conversation, terms like “swatting,” “doxxing,” and “dark net” are referenced, with one detective pointing out that online threats are “not covered by free speech.” The dialogue is embarrassingly clumsy, written for an audience not familiar with Gamergate or the more complex workings of the internet.
This is so ludicrously absurd. What is next, NCIS featuring a three-part episode that involves the murder of a neurotic transvestite who calls himself Brianna Who? An epic fantasy HBO series entitled "The Saga of Yamanamama"?

Anyhow, I hope the bad guys are a team that involves a guy in a wheelchair, a television actor, and a handsome, athletic, forty-something game developer and novelist. That would be amusing.

Wow, they've dragged in the Dinosaur media. That's like calling your grandfather to help you fight! Maybe way back in the 1980s when people actually watched this crap this might have helped them, but now it just smacks of desperation! Does anyone involved in Gamergate watch Anti-White porn like this? Maybe they can organise a boycott of Blockbuster while they're at it...

Maybe finally, gamers will realize what we've known for years. Nobody in Hollyweird or any major entertainment venue is your friend or even potentially on your side.

It's funny, on Twitter, I saw GG had a lot of misplaced hope that the episode would be more "fair and balanced" than this.

Welcome to the real fight, GG. Some of us have been at it for two thousand years.

Anonymous totenhenchen February 11, 2015 8:52 AM

I stopped watching SVU years ago. The dialogue sounds like it was written by teenage MIM Notes rejects. Unrelenting concern trolling. A hammer to the head is more subtle.

Just went and checked the taps. You guys will be happy to know that water is still wet.

Blogger skiballa February 11, 2015 9:01 AM

Wow, I keep losing comments, I'll try again.

Remember that SVU portrays anyone getting off because of a violation of their constitutional rights as using an egregious legal loophole. And also, any firearm they find is always registered, and always leads them back to the perp, every time. I remember their take on gamers in their GTA send-up, totally didn't have to suspend my disbelief on that one. Such is modern "programming".

Definitely looking forward to seeing the list of suspect in the gamergate episode, much potential for keks to be had by all.

Why........you don't want to be portrayed on TV?

Blogger Student in Blue February 11, 2015 9:02 AM

Brad Wardell?

No, wait, I don't think he wrote a novel... Milo is writing a novel, but he isn't a game developer...

Man, what a stumper! Who could this mysterious figure possibly be?

As it is L&O, I can predict with a high degree of confidence that the bad guy will be a white businessman in a suit.

@Soga
Maybe finally, gamers will realize what we've known for years. Nobody in Hollyweird or any major entertainment venue is your friend or even potentially on your side.

It's not particularly that gamers as a whole aren't disillusioned with media, but rather that there's a lot of gamers on the side of Gamergate that would nominally identify with the left-wing propaganda machine, so they never had a chance to be disillusioned yet by the dishonesty on display.

There's a good number of gamers rightfully pointing out "why are you expecting honesty after all that's happened so far?"

OpenID cailcorishev February 11, 2015 9:10 AM

Sounds like they're officially out of ideas.

The dialogue is embarrassingly clumsy, written for an audience not familiar with Gamergate or the more complex workings of the internet.

For some reason, it always is. When The X-Files did its "software gone crazy" episode, they even had it written by William Gibson. It helped, and the episode wasn't entirely awful, but there's something about hacker jargon coming out of actors' mouths that just never sounds authentic.

Law & Order, a story ripped from the headlines and then mangled to end with a politically correct finish where every criminal turns out to be white, conservative and usually male, .

Anonymous WroughtFe February 11, 2015 9:21 AM

You know, if this episode was to be true to life the twist at the end would be the game developer setting up her own kidnapping!

Anonymous trk February 11, 2015 9:23 AM

Epic. Let's hope the would be evil harasser is a short martial arts indian (feather, not dot) who sits at bars with sunglasses while he sips blue hurricanes. The ending of course is when Ice T takes him down w a 9mm. The song "colors" plays as the credit scrolls.

I used to watch Castle which stars Captain Malcolm Reynolds as a crime novelists who helps solve crimes with a pretty detective who acts like a man. It took me a while to realize that, in New York City, nearly every episode's homicide(s) were committed by a white man. It's outrageous and I had to stop watching it. Clearly propaganda. There was a lot of anti-male, pro-female cheer leading.

Hey at least its not as bad as when they combined the leftist fantasies of Paula Dean and George Zimmerman. The funniest part about it is Skittles girlfriends first day testimony that she was on the phone with him and that he thought GZ was gay & checking him out making it a failed gay bashing. That the video of her saying that and talking like an Obamaphone woman is a gift from god.

Take note that Ice T only ever gets one line at a time, he was hired to do voice narration for a young adult short story scheduled for an afternoon & it took him 2 extra days. http://www.theverge.com/2014/2/5/5384000/ice-t-records-dungeons-dragons-audiobook

Whenever I hear a TV procedural is going to tackle a tough tech subject ripped off the headlines of 6 months ago, I think of things like this.

Blogger Joshua Sinistar February 11, 2015 11:38 AM

Television is from an alternate Earth so bizarre that Bizarro World seems normal in comparison. Really intelligent black guys tell dumb White dudes how White inventions work on TV. Why do you think that blacks believe they invented everything? Its not just fictional black fantasy month!
I think there have been more White rapists on TV than has ever existed. They always go after black or Hispanic girls of course, who are working professionals with a man at home.
You'd think that the producers would at least make this plausible wouldn't you? Nope.

Blogger Marissa February 11, 2015 11:58 AM

My husband and I saw Alien Outpost a few nights ago. It was a horrible mix of Restrepo and Halo. Out of the 10 ostensibly infantrymen defending the outpost, 4 were black and 1 was Asian - outrageous considering the actual numbers. There didn't seem to be anyone explicitly Hispanic though the main character might have been "White Hispanic". Even worse, there's a part in the movie where a character is using his eyes to transmit a code. Guess who figures out the code in 5 seconds? Why, the two black geniuses, of course!

Anonymous Noah B. February 11, 2015 12:07 PM

I used to enjoy Law & Order but gave up on the show and never went back after the episode where they parodied the Terri Schaivo case but made the parents (or some relative) who was trying to save her life out to be the villains of the story. Just walked away in disgust at that point.

I have long held that "Special Victims" in the show's title actually refers to the detectives rather than the cases they handle; every one of them has some traumatic backstory explaining why they care so very much!!!11!

The episode is playing in the background right now - I am still trying to hope for a surprise twist in which the female designer and her supporters turn out to have staged the whole attack...

Anonymous horsewithnonick February 11, 2015 9:58 PM

Yeah, no such luck tonight - even though similar twists are ordinarily L&O's bread and butter, in this case it sounds like they're running the "Gamers are nasty dangerous (but impotent) hate-beasts!" line...pity.
