Forget free thought

US universities are now places where even simple facts are unwelcome:
A student at Reed College has been banned from class for denying the existence of “rape culture” in the United States and arguing that the oft-repeated statistic that one in five women are raped at college is bogus.

Jeremiah True, 19, received an email from professor Pancho Savery on March 14 telling him he was making his classmates so uncomfortable that he was no longer welcome to participate in the “conference” sections of his Humanities 110 class, a course which focuses on the art and literature of classical Greece, according to BuzzFeed News.

True says he sparred with his classmates on a variety of issues, but says it was his criticism of the 1-in-5 rape statistic that ended up being the tipping point.

“There are several survivors of sexual assault in our conference, and you have made them extremely uncomfortable with what they see as not only your undermining incidents of rape, but of also placing too much emphasis on men being unfairly charged with rape,” said Savery in an email True posted online. “[Other students] have said that things you have said in our conference have made them so upset that they have difficulty concentrating in other classes. I, as conference leader, have to do what is best for the well-being of the entire class, and I am therefore banning you from conference for the remainder of the semester.”

At least one student thinks giving True the boot was the right move, saying that True’s statements somehow represented a safety hazard.

“This is an excellent example of a professor taking initiative to take care of his students,” senior Rosie Dempsey told BuzzFeed. “Of course, we are an institution that encourages dissent and active discussion, but there is a difference between stimulating discussion through opposition and making other students feel unsafe.”
If they are banning people for making other students feel unsafe, shouldn't they ban those who run around telling students that one of five of them is doomed to be raped?

What's even funnier is Reason contacted him for an interview and he said he'd do it if the first word in the title was "nigger".

They of course declined.

What is best is that all it takes is people dissenting from the factions to cause real issues.

Hence why the left is always quick to tar with "Uncle Tom".

Considering Greenpeace has no problem vandalizing centuries old Peruvian ritual grounds, couldn't a legitimate case be made to have all tree huggers banned?

Also, what if you were born and grew up in an area that has seen an economic boom thanks to milder climates over the last 50 years. Could you not also feel threatened by anybody looking to stem the tide of global warming?

Really considering how in your face, the left gets, how is this new approach anything but a golden opportunity for black knight conservatives.

...and arguing that the oft-repeated statistic that one in five women are raped at college is bogus.

You know how to tell that this "statistic" is bogus? Women keep going to college. A one-in-five rate for any violent crime is horrifying. I read somewhere that your odds of being the victim of a violent crime in the worst part of Detroit is one in seven. Which is why no one goes there if they're not already stuck there. But I don't see women dropping out of college or refusing to matriculate, and I'll bet they're applying at the same rate as ever. Thus, it's bogus.

But if women are genuinely concerned about their safety, there's a solution: go to a women's only college.

Anonymous Stickwick March 20, 2015 12:30 PM

Owen: So, the women who are too emotionally delicate for such conversations will stay in an environment that they feel will lead to rape 20% of the time?

And they're totally qualified for combat in the military. As long as no one says anything that makes them feel uncomfortable.

Blogger natschuster March 20, 2015 12:32 PM

What does "rape culture" mean? Does it mean that professors are telling their students that any young woman who doesn't wnat to have sex with all the young men who wnat to have sex with her is somehow unhealthy, prudish, too religious, Victorian, etc, and that the young men interprete that to mean that, deep down, she really wants it? And what excatly constitutes sexual assault? Verbnal assault is also assault. Doe sit mean that a young man said to a young woman that she is pretty? I'm just trying to understand.

Every man who has worked in the modern corporation knows that objecting to any factoid delivered by the diversity and/or sexual harassment facilitator during mandatory training is a very fast trip to unemployment.

This guy just didn't get the memo.

Ah yes Reed College. Always was the petri dish of moronic leftist ideas. Color me surprised. A lovely illustration of what our host has been writing about in dealing with these types. Hopefully this young man learns his lesson and runs with it. Btw given the propensity for Reed coeds to lounge around the campus in the nude and the abundance of easily offended, angry, feminist, sjw, land whale types in that area, I rather doubt they have much to fear in the way of rape potential. Then again it is full of the douchebaggy, neck beard, thirsty gamma types so I suppose... Hell hath no fury like a gamma scorned.

Blogger Owen March 20, 2015 12:45 PM

I am beginning to wonder if one in five claim they are raped.

I've mentioned it before.

I never believed "street cred" was a thing when I heard it in the 90s. I was a kid from the burbs. Catholic school raised. Joined the Army at 18. No way would there be heightened status from serving in jail. That completely subverted the civilization model.

What we are witnessing is the birth of "rape cred." Only, the definition is being changed to "sexual assault," as defined by SJWs.

Was it Moynihan who wrote the paper on how we, as a society, are degrading definitions to suit convenient needs? I can't recall.

Blogger Bike Bubba March 20, 2015 12:46 PM

It strikes me that this kind of thing is getting very common. You cannot suggest such a thing as a false rape accusation or a bogus statistic on the subject without being shouted down these days. Good for Mr. True to stand his ground on this one, I hope God blesses him for it.

Because every humanities class involves, basically, reading the Cliff Notes version of a text, dismissing it wholly or in part due to racism, sexism, classism, or trans-homophobia, then patting each other on the back for how awesome they are.

Collage students seem to pride themselves on being clear-eyed free thinkers, unencumbered by outdated notions like conformity and groupthink.

I think that it is just the opposite. They are quite capable of flaunting the traditions of their grandparents. They think that is what makes them rebel iconoclasts.

But to the group and the group leaders, they are made up of obedient little sycophants. Every now and then, an individual shows up that is capable of true independent thought. That scares them and they hastily expel him.

Way to go Mr. True!

The American Federation of Teachers (or was that Advanced Frankfurt-school Tutors?) is all over this:
Their Spring 2015 edition of On Campus, their Propaganda organ....I mean, their professional periodical features an editorial by President Randi Weingarten who quotes, "Here are the facts: One in four women will be sexually assaulted during her time in college." She is apparently unaware that the figure she quotes (without citations) is bogus.

And to add to her appeal to emotion: she begins her article with her own proclamation of victimhood: she claims she was sexually assaulted just after her junior year of college. (I can't say that she was or was not, without any actual evidence that it was an actual assault or one of the new fem-speak assaults in which mere un-solicited attention is an assault.)

I always look forward to these AFT publications as a window into the "minds" running the campuses. Lock step lefties steer the ship, full speed ahead, believing that speaking truth to power will deflect the looming icebergs.

Tuition, room and board at Reed College is just over $60,000 per year. For that kind of dough, you'd think guys would get more than a 1-in-5 chance at having sex with a coed (all sex is rape). Shouldn't non-rapists get a discount? Conversely, can a guy pay more for better chances, like buying two lottery tickets instead of one? For that matter, ugly chicks might pay more for better chances, too. Obama should offer student loans to cover the increased cost of buying more chances to have sex (Bill Clinton certainly would have).

Blogger Nate March 20, 2015 2:26 PM

There has been a few articles that suggest he has behaved like an internet troll which may have been why he was banned from the discussion portion. Here is an excerpt from one of them:

Savery declined comment to BuzzFeed, but I was able to reach him via email. He confirmed that he was a "strong believer in the First Amendment," and maintained that the student's views were not the issue.

"He was not banned because of what he said but because of a series of disruptive behaviors,"

I also reached True via email, and asked him whether he had been rowdy or disruptive in class. He responded by making a bizarre request. This was his email back to me:

Before I interview with you, you must agree to make "nigger" be the first word in your article.

Stingray: Which victim class would win - the women or the black guy?

Ignoring for the moment Nate's observation that the guy is apparently a weirdo, and just looking at this from the point of view of one victim class vs. another: since women are higher in the victim hierarchy than black men, without a doubt the women would win.

This kind of conflict is exactly what was described in Vox's post on Thursday, "SJW strategy and Communist strategy," in which he quoted from Learning from Vietnam: The Patterns of Liberation Movements: "the standard Communist device [is] shifting coalitions in order to make use of opposition forces and eventually eliminate them piecemeal.. Women + blacks were an effective coalition against white men, but once women think they've neutralized white men, they'll openly set their sights on black men. What'll be interesting to see is where transgendered people fit in the hierarchy; so far, it seems they're even higher than women.

I had a similar experience in Poli-sci arguing against affirmative action and abortion in a class that was called "Women and the Law," a mandatory class filled with women and black people. Managed to convert some of them by asking the teacher to describe the abortion procedure (double points because the professor, pregnant at the time, said that she supported abortion twice as much, now that she herself was pregnant). It does make for excellent conversation-enders when pro-choice advocates try to ramrod a debate.

Good times.

My anthropology prof, on the other hand, would cut me off and eventually stopped acknowledging me after I challenged him one too many times. So in my experience, the social sciences were definitely left leaning but hadn't quite reached the speech banning stage.
