The NYT pumps anti-GamerGate

It's amazing how the mainstream media thinks they can just blatantly lie about easily verified facts and control the narrative thereby:
Originally intended as a short about the indie game scene in Mr. Francois’s native Australia, “GameLoading” soon transformed into a feature about indie developers worldwide. Among the interviewees are Ms. Quinn, who created the free, text-driven interactive fiction game Depression Quest in 2013. Instead of battling dragons and demons, players fight clinical depression. Ms. Quinn’s creation enraged some gamers, who objected to its subject matter and to the fact that, like more conventional video games, it was being released on Steam, a popular digital store. Anonymous trolls sent her rape and death threats and posted her home address and phone numbers online, prompting her to relocate.

Mr. Francois has struggled to understand why fans of mainstream games would feel threatened by an indie like Depression Quest, since they’re hardly in competition with one another for fans. “The reality is, we’re going to see more games, and more variety of games. Obviously, Activision isn’t going to kill off their first-person shooters.”
It's not that hard, Mr. Francois. No one is threatened by Depression Quest. But everyone was furious that a bunch of game journos tried to claim it was a great game, then conspired to hide the fact that some of them had personal connections to Quinn.

As for Activision, there is this out of Redmond:
In an interview dating back to late last year, Bonnie Ross, the woman in charge of stewarding and developing the blockbuster HALO franchise, stated that her goal in managing the franchise was to increase the diversity of characters appearing in the games produced by Microsoft subsidiary 343 Industries. She further reinforced her position on women in the gaming industry by stressing the importance of hiring more female game developers and giving them role models to aspire to within the industry.

Ms. Ross’s influence has already been heavily felt within the HALO canon: she is the executive responsible for tearing up the original script for HALO 4, which featured women as villainous characters, and forcing a complete rewrite to include stronger female protagonists.
So, do they seriously struggle to understand or are they just disingenuous? We know perfectly well that Ross will turn HALO into the tale of a female Master Chief torn between her love between two soldiers if given the opportunity. While there's nothing wrong with that per se, male gamers don't want that in their games. If they did, they'd be reading Twilight.

They could cross Depression Quest with Halo. The Master Chief spends long sessions in therapy between combat ops, pining for the days when he was a young Spartan in love.

Having played Bungie products like Marathon on the Mac, was sort of bummed when Halo came out on X-Box so I got an X-Box. Halo was/is phenomenal! I frankly do not care for STRONG INDEPENDENT HEAR ME ROAR™ women characters in games. Thanks to the blogosphere I've learned more about GamerGate than I ever knew was possible and pretty much do not pay attention to any MSM coverage thereof. Thanks, Vox!

This is why I think gamergate is eventually going to lose. Blizzard also had a recent announcement of change in regards to female characters if I recall. You'll see more and more of these types of deals going forward. It was a good run while it lasted.

Hypergamous Atheist Lesbian Octogenarians are envious that young girls prefer guys over them, they should want them because of "SPECIAL". That's why feminists don't want women to know that after 35 if they don't have kids they most likely won't.

Bullshit, the MSM and network channels are already dying because they have gone down the path of political correctness. Game designers are more than welcome to join them if they load their games with SJW propaganda.

Chances after a woman reaches 35? Try 30, or even the late 20's. Just crunch the numbers. The thing is, by that time, the octo-lesbians have them. Childless women become the bitterest of haters. When it's all about you, and you hate yourself, everyone else is obviously at fault. Nothing to do but become a feminist and vote for destruction.

If the owners of McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, etc. all started taking the burgers out of their menus and replacing them with tofu and soy sprouts, would people just keep eating there? That seems to be what Eli and other "GG will fail because corporations" doomsayers believe would happen. If the game companies turn out SJW-infested slop, people will just keep swallowing it, and those companies will continue to prosper and no competition will emerge.

Blogger JartStar March 10, 2015 5:45 PM

The problem for seeing the effect of GG on games takes years, or even decades to show. Remember that many of these franchises have years of good will and name recognition which serve as ballast going forward.

Hotline Miami 2 came out today. The SJWs and journos tried hard for the past two years to get the fake rape scene cut, but they have failed.

The most they could get was an option to skip the scene in the intro like in the "No Russian" mission in Call of Duty 4.

Blogger Eric March 10, 2015 5:58 PM

I doubt it. gamergate will win, eventually, because companies can't force you to buy their games. SJWs won't make the games people want to buy. Current industry leaders will reverse course as their market share erodes, or they'll be replaced by companies like Rockstar who don't care what SJWs think. If Take Two reins in Rockstar it'll be someone else.

The only way the SJWs can win here is to get the government involved. I'm sure they'd dearly love to do that, but I don't see it actually happening.

Everyone seems to think that GamerGate is just a mop up operation in a culture war that has already been won.

Everyone also seems to think games have to go the way of Hollywood because TV, Theater and the newsmedia did. However the creative mindset is extremely different from the competitive mind set. The mass media is passive entertainment.

You will note, that sports has not gone hard left. There is no talk of women quarterbacks, there is no great cry for transgender defensive tackles. Oh there are a few entryists, who have gotten high enough on the sports food chain, to blather stupidity. However that is mostly on the sports journalism and business management side of things. Very few athletes embrace these ideals.

Hence the SJW desire to displace American Football with Soccer, (mostly because they don't know what Vinnie Jones used to do for a living before he became an actor).

SJWs can't survive in a competitive environment.

Now don't get me wrong they can, have and will continue to crap up AAA titles. Witness Mass Effect, Tomb Raider and worst of all Dragon Age. But you can't buy your percentage when the cost outlay for a new game is sixty bucks a pop. Gamers just won't buy a game they don't like.

Also gaming cannot support failure the way the mass media can. You have to control an industry before the career path of the Left Leaning Death Roll can be implemented. That means they have to perform and they just can't. Witness Depression Quest and Revolution 60.

Anonymous Quartermaster March 10, 2015 6:11 PM

Blogger Noah B March 10, 2015 6:20 PM

"SJWs can't survive in a competitive environment."

That is the heart of why GamerGate is different. The leftists' takeovers of big media corporations were effective in the past because those companies had monopolies over their audiences. That changed a little with cable TV offering more viewing choices, changed a great deal with the rise of the internet, and will change still more with the rise of self publishing.

Decentralization ensures that news, ebook publishing, and game design are competitive. And when presented with a choice, people prefer to avoid nonsensical propaganda.

Excksbawks is for gays, amirite?

Ahem...

Anyway, as a mostly PC Master Race sort of chap, I approve of Cataline Sergius and Noah B and Eric's message.

Games can't be controlled in the same way as films or TV shows or newspapers. They're much more decentralised and internationalised. The cultural barriers that stop, say, Indonesian movies being a big success in the West don't apply to games.

Gameplay is a language of its own, and localising the text and speech isn't that big of a problem. You can instantly distribute your product to the entire world with no middleman - or, if you prefer, the middlemen of your choice such as Steam, Amazon, Apple, Google, etc.

Some of my favourite games recently have been:

Kerbal Space Program - made by a bunch of guys in Mexico.

Elite: Dangerous - made by a British studio and partially funded via Kickstarter

Metro: Last Light - made in the Ukraine

DayZ - from the Czech Republic

Wolfenstein: The New Order - from Sweden

Metal Gear Solid V : Ground Zeroes - from Nippon

Feminise and faggotise the established American (or British, or Canadian, or whatever) studios and they'll more than likely fail when audiences don't buy their dreary soc-just games about the plight of polyamorous genderqueer trannies. Competitors will then eat them alive like a ravening oolt of Posleen.

It could be a big studio in Tokyo that eats them for lunch, or a small studio in Poland, or a couple of teenagers coding in a bedroom in Helsinki. Doesn't matter where it is, what matters is that there is a multi-billion dollar global market demanding entertainment from its games, that market is growing, and the barriers to trade in that market are almost nonexistent.

For similar reasons I think Castalia House, and/or others like it, are going to be a big success in the publishing space. People demand a product, and SJW's can no longer effectively organise themselves as a chokepoint between the consumers and suppliers.

Anonymous ZeroFill March 10, 2015 6:54 PM

Unity 5, Unreal 4 and Source 2 all require $0 to get started in game development (Unreal 4 does have a 5% gross cut after your game makes a certain amount).

These are engines capable of creating fantastic products. The types of people who download these powerful tools are young men.

There will be a renaissance of traditional, masculine games, along with some very creative titles and ideas that large companies wouldn't risk making. Gamergame is adding fuel to this fire.

The future is bright in game development. The body must rid itself of the parasite (SJW) first.

What amazes me is the unadulterated chutzpah these folks have. Commensurate with Gamma delusions of grandeur, when cornered by logic, they start issuing ultimatums as if they are somehow in complete control. Usually, its some derivative of the "right side of history" argument, where we are reminded that we can either:
A. Unequivocally and unquestioningly submit to their world view.
or
B. Be effortlessly swept aside by the powerful (and oh so leftward) march of history (GET USED TO IT, CISBIGOTS!!!111!!).

The SJW Borg is all too eager to remind us that resistance is futile.
I can certainly understand the quasi-logic that underpins this bravado, though. Keep in mind that to the modern leftist, status symbols and titles trump all other indicators of ability. It's not actual power, so much as the perception of power that matters to them. For them, being able to call upon the support of a vaunted mainstream media giant like the NYT, is like being able to call in airstrikes from the USAF.

We, of course, know that the Grey Lady has been losing readership and credibility like Baghdad Bob for some time now, with no reversal of the trend in sight. We also can take apart a mainstream hit piece with remarkable speed and efficiency.

In the mind of the rabbit, none of this matters. Where we see a shaky and faltering relic of old media, they see an ironclad and unstoppable cultural commissar, the likes of which should leave us quaking helplessly in our measly sh*tlord boots.

Because of this perception, we find the SJW's consistently arguing from a position of unassailable strength, and repeatedly confounded when we do not buckle.

Anonymous kh123 March 10, 2015 6:58 PM

Tangential, but from what I understand the exodus of original designers from Bungie was over contractual shenanigans being played (by the higher ups) over creative direction and ownership of Destiny. Had been several years in the making, no signs of disapproval or the like, green lights all around, massive backstory and gameplay possibilities that were known from day one... and then the reneging began.

If true, wonder if it's the same cast of characters.

Anonymous lynch March 10, 2015 7:02 PM

The hilarious aspect of the SJW-ification of 343 / Halo is that their latest release, "Halo: the Master Chief Collection" was completely unusable for multiplayer when it came out. It took 343 10+ patches over 3 months, and a giant rewrite of the matchmaking to have the game be workable online.

I hope we don't have a future Halo title with Cortana 2.0 depicted as an overweight cyber-Lena Dunham in a moo-moo.

I wonder how many people get bottled, stabbed, or just have the shit kicked out of them at American Football matches.

Or how many gridiron fans enjoy songs and chants about the referee being a homosexual onanist of questionable parentage, or their less than flattering opinion of certain ethnic groups.

Yes. This is exactly what they think, Cail. And now that Steam is becoming a prerequisite for gaming and the FCC will eventually control all aspects of the internet, including Steam, their dreams and aspirations are within sight. People really don't look far enough down the road.

Blogger Noah B March 10, 2015 7:38 PM

Across all industries, it seems to hold true that once companies believe they can force their customers to buy what they want to make instead of making what their customers actually want, those companies begin to decline. I see no reason why Steam would be any different.

Dr. Halsey has been fairly consistently portrayed in a sympathetic, "I did what I had to do" fashion, though, literally getting away with mass-murder with little more than a slap on the wrist, in effect (in contrast with her long-time and much-despised rival, Colonel Ackerson). She's also something of a Mary Sue, being the lover of Captain Keys from the first game and the mother of his child, as well as somehow being the foremost human expert on the Forerunners, FTL travel, powered armour engineering, human bioengineering and artificial intelligence all at the same time.

Also, it appears that Halo 5 will be featuring a black SPARTAN rather heavily; there even seems to be some suggestion that he might be "the next Master Chief".

And in the end it doesn't really matter. While I for one thought the Halo story was actually a step above most shooter fare, the fact is that maybe 1 out of 20 people who played Halo (and I think I am being generous) gave two shits about the story. It's amazing popularity was due to a very dialed, fluid and balanced multiplayer where skill and teamwork ruled the day. Ever since Reach, was developed by Bungie, Halo has been on the slide because they forgot what made Halo so popular.

Now the focus on SJ nonsense in regards to Halo development doesn't bode well for Activision because it clearly illustrates that they either don't understand what made the game great. They need to spend less time on diversity and more time on removing the call of duty bullshit.

"IF"???? Halo 4 sucks. I have zero interest in playing the campaign, whatever they called the episodic story chapters OR MP.

And I was a HALO junkie from CE to REACH. (Can you say "Reclaimer"? Though I'm far more proud of the high 40s rank I had in HALO 2 MP matchmaking. Are those stats still on Bungie's site?)

I shudder to think of how many hours in front of the XBox consoles I've spent as the Master Chief. It's probably well over a year of my life at this point.

But with HALO 4 I could not work up the enthusiasm to beat it on solo Legendary, let alone get all the Achievements. Visually gorgeous and damned boring.

What a waste of a videogame legacy.

Blogger epobirs March 12, 2015 6:56 AM

What wretchedly bad reporting. If I met the author of that NYT piece my first question would be, "Does the phrase 'visual novel' mean anything to you?" Because that is what Depression Quest was, without the manga graphics of the Japanese visual novel genre. What the gaming audience objected to was having this exercise be labeled a game, when it was actually just a lecture about about feeling crappy in a choose your own adventure format with no, repeat NO, correct choices for a favorable outcome. It remains unclear whether this was intended to encourage understanding of depression or, misery loving company, induce others into the state.

Despite the written- in-an-afternoon throwaway nature of 'Depression Quest,' we kept hearing over and over about how wonderful and ground-breaking this item was. (You could say E.T. for the Atari 2600 was ground-breaking too, since they dug a hole in New Mexico to be rid of the unsellable inventory.) It was this absurd repetitious praise that both raise gamers hackles and made them suspicious of the writers' motivation. Those suspicions turned out to be entirely vindicated as it was revealed that Zoe Quinn primary talent was schmoozing with the camp follower contingent of the interactive game industry rather than producing anything of note.

That was but one symptom of the creeping obnoxiousness signaling that games journalism was the latest institution to suffer the tread of Gramscian marchers. This was a new concept to many but horribly familiar to others. Regardless, a bad smell had begun to emanate from the gaming sites and something had to be said.

Yeah. I addressed that in my Reaxxion article. In fact, the original title of that article was going to be, "Bonnie Ross Has No Idea What Her Job Is", and the MCC debacle was a very clear indication that she has no clue how to manage a truly effective gaming outfit.

There are still a fair few ex-Bungie folks within 343i- Franke O'Connor, for instance, has effective control over the canon and back-story. But even he seems to be toeing the SJW line at the moment.

I'm very much looking forward to HALO 5: Guardians. But if Microsoft screws this up, they'll have exactly one person to blame: Bonnie Ross. And she should then be fired and banned, for life, from the industry.

Also, it appears that Halo 5 will be featuring a black SPARTAN rather heavily; there even seems to be some suggestion that he might be "the next Master Chief".

Yes. That would be SPARTAN Locke, who featured heavily in the "HALO: Nightfall" TV event. Seems like an interesting character, actually. The fact that he's black doesn't bother me; he comes across as a believable, honourable, and very masculine character in that miniseries. It will be interesting to see what they do with him in the new game- as long as they don't pander to the SJW crowd, none of whom are actual fans of the HALO saga.

I really don't think there's any point to the character or to promoting him the way they have except to pander to the SJW crowd.
