Wearing Murdoch's leash

Fox News may be better than the ABCNNBCBS cabal, but don't ever mistake them for the good guys, or even being reliably pro-American. And they do NOT like criticism coming from the nationalist right:
The blogger Mickey Kaus has quit his job at The Daily Caller after the conservative site's editor-in-chief, Tucker Carlson, pulled a critical column about Fox News from the site, Kaus told the On Media blog on Tuesday.

"It's pretty simple," Kaus said in an interview, "I wrote a piece attacking Fox for not being the opposition on immigration and amnesty -- for filling up the airwaves with reports on ISIS and terrorism, and not fulfilling their responsibility of being the opposition on amnesty and immigration.... I posted it at 6:30 in the morning. When I got up, Tucker had taken it down. He said, 'We can't trash Fox on the site. I work there.'"

Carlson, who co-founded The Daily Caller in 2010, is a conservative contributor to Fox News and the host of its weekend edition of "Fox & Friends."

Kaus says when he told Carlson he needed to be able to write about Fox, Carlson told him it was a hard-and-fast rule, and non-negotiable.

"He said it was a rule, and he wouldn't be able to change that rule. So I told him I quit," Kaus explained. "I just don't see how you can put out a publication with that kind of giant no-go area. It's not like we're owned by Joe's Muffler Shop, so we just can't write about Joe's Muffler shop."
This is entirely par for the Fox News course. Ten years ago I was writing a book called Media Whores that was signed to Thomas Nelson. The executives were very upset when they discovered that it wasn't only about the media whores of the Left, but contained chapters about Michelle Malkin and Bill O'Reilly as well.

The official line about the sudden cancellation was that the book wasn't expected to sell well enough to justify the marketing. However, I was told by someone inside the organization, who was definitely in a position to know what really happened, that the outline and sample chapters I'd provided were shown to Fox, who indicated that they would prefer that it was not published. So, the book was duly canceled six weeks after the contract was signed, although I did get paid for it.

This was not my only experience of this variety. And perhaps you'll understand that my disregard for mainstream publishers is not entirely rooted in my disdain for the SJW gatekeepers in SF/F.

Its an odd feeling when you realize youre one of a few who truly dont give a damn, or much of damn, amongst a bunch of image conscious ass kissing cowards with no integrity. You find yourself looking around thinkijg, "Why bother??". A diy punk rock ethic goes a long way. Screw them all and do it yourself. Legitimacy is decided by the future. Never compromise.

Blogger Cataline Sergius March 18, 2015 6:10 AM

I've always found the left wing obsession with Fox News hilarious. They are both terrified of it and never watch it.

Gavin McInnes called it right, It's like they hired one guy to watch it for them. But that guy worked out years ago that he doesn't have to do his job at all. He can just make shit up off the top of his head an they'll buy it, completely.

The left honestly seems to believe that if they can just get Fox off the air, conservatism will collapse completely. They honestly don't get that it's audience would be cut in half,. if there was any other any other game in town.

That said, I don't watch Fox myself. I think Idiocrasy's view of Fox was completely accurate. It's at best intellectually stunted. The Truth be told, the only right wingers who watch it are ones that believe the internet is a passing fad.

I know Fox is aware that it's audience is the new Geritol generation and will shorty die on them. And I know they don't quite know what to do about that.

Look for the left to start crowing about the collapse of the American Right because Fox's ratings will start to slip as it's audience dies.

Blogger Rantor March 18, 2015 6:17 AM

Amusing, Daily Caller can't talk about Fox. Corporate tentacles keeping broadcast and cable news, (GE, Fox or Disney news anyone?) partnered with magazines, publishers and blogs to control media output and public opinion.

Reading the seemingly independent RedState this morning, Erik is ready to give up on the Republican Party. Boehner seems to be letting Pelosi run things to prevent Feelbad. So who owns Boehner?

Blogger Hd Hammer March 18, 2015 6:20 AM

Vox - "No, I never wrote most of it and I'm not really interested in the media these days"

Understandable.

Perhaps OT, but I'd be interested in your take on news channels and their role in propaganda, more particularly whether these channels are used, perhaps rather insidiously by governments to spread propaganda.
I have in mind for example RT. I have never seen RT criticize Putin and his policies, which policies seems very conservative.
But then RT would run these half hour documentaries on gun violence in the USA essentially advocating gun control, and "rape culture" on USA campuses, which all seems to promote SJW values - but promoting them in the USA!
Is RT just stupid, or is this done deliberately and if so, do you think the Russian Government behind it? Psychological warfare?

I stopped watching O'Reilly around 2001 when he attacked some high school in Georgia for holding a privately organized Whites-only prom.

Blogger W.LindsayWheeler March 18, 2015 6:32 AM

There is a common theme in all of conservative media---you can't talk on certain subjects. National Review let go Joe Sobran and Pat Buchanan.

Mickey Kaus is certainly right! Fox News is part of the problem. Yesterday, all Rush talked about was Netanyahu's election. What does that have to do with us and our problems in America. Rush Limbaugh is a con artist, along with Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly. They all attack racism. The real core of amnesty and immigration is demographics---i.e. race, and they can use that or talk about race and culture. None of these people are conservatives. They are not nationalists.

The real problem in America is immigration and amnesty.

Mickey Kaus seems very quick, agile, and deeply knowlegeable, especially so for a liberal.

I never watch the TV news, and it seems fewer people watch it by the day. Problem being the establishment's rhetoric is just awful, the Right's is archaic and stupid, the Left's is stupid but more importantly the left is such a fragmented set of cults that beyond running pieces on the White male common enemy there is no there there. What person of color is going to watch Maddow or someone remotely against racism watch Sharpton and the black racists rant on like Nazis?

Vox, I'm kind of sympathetic to these institutions being privately owned businesses.
But what about getting peer review dissenting opinions published in a public university affiliated publication. Getting unadjusted weather data from a meteorology department. Getting anomalous data from NASA commented on. Getting raw data on drug trials, GMO, Vaccine injuries, Autism, Fluoridation. How many more years are the JFK files sealed. How much of the 911 commission report remains classified.
NASA's originals of the moon landings are all destroyed. Lois Lerners emails. Hilary's emails.

Signing up for private enterprise has to come with some strings. But public records, data, supposedly open forums promoting honest inquiry and investigation. And the constant barrage of disinformation that gets posted at a beforeitsnews.com type blog. In any case your car hasn't mysteriously veered off the road while doing 200 km/hr on an autobarn or the air bag activated remotely while you were on bend on a steep incline. Failing to publish might have been a good result others might now wish they had.
The actual disappointing bit is so many people taking a FOX neocon pseudo conservative even remotely seriously.

Anonymous Stephen J. March 18, 2015 7:58 AM

"If Baen can pretend to be conservative...."

Baen's never pretended to be conservative. They've simply refused to be exclusively liberal, because they're more interested in entertainment than politics and because they recognize there is a good market in it.

Issues like Fox are always an interesting dilemma to think about, because on the one hand letting the perfect be the enemy of the good is counterproductive, but so is "compromising" between s**t and ice cream, if people will forgive the old vulgar saying.

There is your problem right there; these guys are social climbers first and journalists second.

I heard Tucker Carlson on a morning talk show the other week and he blatantly and unapologetically said he would never criticize Fox because he worked there. The conversation had nothing to do with Kaus, he just said it as a general principle. So, this doesn't shock me at all.

Anonymous Sounder March 18, 2015 8:15 AM

#WhiteGenocide via unlimited non-white immigration and forced assimilation into every white country and only white countries is the one thing that the criminal left and "respectable conservatives" will always agree on. There is no room for racism, simply means there is no room for white people. The "right" will do whatever it takes to out-liberal the liberals to prove they aren't racist. And this will continue as long as whites keep supporting RINOs who promise to keep them safe from the bad brown people "over there", while ignoring the anti-white terrorists right here at home.

Carlson works for Fox. Carlson owns the Daily Caller. Carlson does not want his writers criticizing his boss. This makes sense. There are a million places to criticize Fox; the Daily Caller is not one of them. Kaus can go write where he feels comfortable and can write what he wants.

Don't construe the above as any kind of endorsement of Fox in general. It's certainly better than ... everything else on TV ... but that's a pretty low bar.

Since they're the main outlet for conservatives, they have way more power. If Fox refuses to have you on, you're not going on anywhere. Whereas if you want to slam NBC, ABC, CBS and CNN will be happy to have you on to discuss it. Bad, bad Fox.

https://heartiste.wordpress.com/2015/03/04/baby-got-swayback/

although i find their ad hoc reasoning for why the swayback should be desired to be absurd.
"It’s theorized that women with a 45 degree curvature of the lower spine are best adapted for squatting on their haunches and foraging for food."

women typically give birth in hunter/gatherer societies by ... squatting.

therefore, it's far more likely that the primary purpose of swayback is the same as having wide "child bearing" hips.

Maybe they don't want the water cooler to be filled with polonium. If they don't carry some water for the left they might meet the same fate as Andrew Brietbart, who really scared pansies. There is also the easy target motive, when I was in college I had a choice of giving a speech on Allen Turing as a cut/paste fairy tale for an easy A or the harsh truth which if told in today's colleges I would have to show naked exboyfriend pics to avoid getting expelled or if I went to HACC have sex with the Vice President who has "safe space" parties at his house for gay students too young to get into gay bars( could a STR8 VP guy do the same?). It also might be just a cheap attack that they can not resist, while I have always said I would not gainsay another's livelihood, when a friend was dating a garbage man it was difficult to refrain. After Brian Williams was caught lying dozens of reporters where tasked to find inaccuracies in O'Reillys statements.

I think Putin is not pro-white but he is a completely antique nationalist. In Russia he promotes healthy policies to build up the nation; in America there is already a powerful program of media demoralization and cultural degradation going and RT supports it.

In this sense only Putin really is like Hitler. (Rings gong for being the first to Godwin the thread!) Or like the WWI Germans sending Lenin to Russia. Why not just have all the employees write on each others' faces: "I hate white people and you'd better too"?

Or you could have them do coffee cup sermons, like:

"This milk by itself is nasty and white, but when we dilute it in the brown coffee it's OK. Find a brown stud to help you dilute your nasty white genes today! At Starbucks, we encourage that. In fact we won't leave you alone until you get with the program -- isn't that great?"

I found it really interesting to see all of the R-wingers who turned on Chuck Johnson when he called out Holly Fisher for cheating on her husband (a soldier currently deployed to the Middle East) at a Family Values Convention.

Kaus is... a nationalist left.

I got here too late to post this myself, but bravo.

Since I gotta post something here other than "me too": which media outfit will be first to make the further connexion and call Kaus a small-n "nazi"? My money's on Wall Street Journal.

Bob K. Mando: If I may be pedantic, I understand that Japanese has neither an L nor an R sound, but has something in between. When speaking English, they substitute this LR sound for both L and R. We English speakers hear the Rness where we expect to hear an L, and the Lness where we expect to hear an R, so it seems us that that they transpose the two sounds.

I don't know about any other Oriental languages.

Totally unsurprised by Carlson pulling this. I mean, he hosts weekend Fox & Friends and he's historically spineless. He wouldn't dare bite the hand that signs his paycheck. Did anyone expect different from him?

"I don't know about any other Oriental languages."

IIRC, is called lambdacism. Korean has it, not so much Mandarin.

> As word spread this week of Starbucks' aggressive plans to tackle the nation's race issue — highlighted by baristas being asked to write the words "Race Together" on customer cups to encourage conversation on racial issues...

So who has the pool on when will the first youtube of a Starbuck's employee getting a hot cup of coffee in their face shows up.

What do you call the substitution of w for v. This is frequent for German speakers.

Russians substitute v for w.

Here is the politically unacceptable column.

I think it's great, which is what you'd expect since I'm close to Mickey Kaus politically. (In favor of preserving our traditional nations, but inclined to moderate leftism on some other issues, like labor unions.)

Too bad that space lizard privilege didn't apply this time. I guess the organized elite has made it clear: Mickey's not part of them.

I'm not aware that any of the elite or their bourgeois mouthpieces allow opposition to immigration remotely near their outlets.

"NASA's originals of the moon landings are all destroyed."

They were found in Neil Armstrong's closet after he died... that and a few other items he pilfered as souviniers.
