Closing the work gap

Be careful what you wish for. The top ten countries with the lowest male-female labor force participation gaps:
  1. Togo
  2. Rwanda
  3. Burundi
  4. Tanzania
  5. Congo
  6. Laos
  7. Myanmar
  8. Sierra Leone
  9. Malawi
  10. Uganda
This suggests advocates might like to do well to reconsider whether closing the wage gap is truly an objective worth pursuing.

"Gee, Jane, isn't it swell that we both make exactly the same wages now?"

"Well, Bob, as you know, it's tough to make it on five cents per day."

"But we have this lovely mud hut! And each other!"

"Yeah, about that, Bob. Human Resources told me that all monoracial heterosex is rape. So I'm going to need you to move out. Shaneeqwa from Marketing is moving in, and, by the way, Payroll is going to send three cents of your daily wages to me starting tomorrow.

From time to time I encounter people, particularly within the men's rights movement, who are anti-SJW, but otherwise egalitarian. Within that context they hold themselves as apolitical.

I am called on to point out that by that path we shall certainly achieve social equality, because that's the way things are in the salt mines.

1.Mozambique
2.Burundi
3.Malawi
4.Rwanda
5.Norway
6.Sierra Leone
7.Togo
8.Tanzania
9.Sweden
10.Congo

Things aren't all equal in the gulags. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn pointed out that you need to belong to a definite ethnic gang to receive those touches of favoritism that mean the difference between survival and the other thing. If you are a member of the universal brotherhood of mankind, too bad for you.

Anonymous Roundtine April 07, 2015 10:00 AM

sqrt,

That list is hilarious. If you want to understand how Norway and Sweden make the list, watch The Gender Equality Paradox. The Scandinavian countries are at the forefront of giving women choices and the result is that occupations are more segregated by sex than in other countries.

I don't know.. is she the first Chinese female fully steeped in SJW ideology to rise to CEO of a company that somebody has heard of? Cause that would probably explain it.

The real question is what is going to be replacing reddit in the next 3 years.

Hey come on. Uganda doesn't have mud huts, except for their tribal kings. Instead they have dirt houses with corrugated aluminum roofing over top.

Of course they are astonished when I told them that in America we've built houses of wood that withstand hurricanes.

Anonymous Porky April 07, 2015 10:24 AM

The other end of the spectrum is much better.

1) Jordan
2) Afghanistan
3) Algeria
4) Iraq
5) Iran
6) Palestine
7) Syria
8) Saudi Arabia
9) Pakistan
10) Egypt

"Gee, Jane, isn't it great that you make almost nothing?"

"Please, Bob, don't hit me."

"Did I tell you to speak?!?"

My point is a rhetorical one, to get them to think a bit about where their "victories" are taking them. After that we can get in to King Rat and Empire of the Sun.

If they're sharp enough they bring it up themselves and generate their own "Aha!" moment.

In Burundi, at least, the general idea was that the men get jobs working for others while the women grow crops and trade them. My cook/housekeeper made $100 per month and was proud to be a high-earner in his country. Nowhere near the bankers and government employees, of course, but for hoi polloi that's a damn good wage. He built a new house with actual mud bricks (instead of the usual piled-up-mud walls) and two whole rooms for himself, wife and six kids, for $500.

The people there were always willing to work hard, but they didn't seem to have the mindset to understand and adopt new technology and methods. As a result, the people in charge of the businesses there tended to be foreigners, whether Chinese, Belgian, or Lebanese.

Anonymous Teenage Jail April 07, 2015 2:44 PM

This post is largely rhetoric, I have to think -- I've gotten used to seeing the returning of rhetoric for rhetoric on this blog.

If someone wanted to actually think about whether making an effort to close this particular gap is necessarily a good thing, it makes a lot more sense to restrict the comparison to countries comparable to the one they're concerned with. It's interesting to know that the dominant factor in the countries with the smallest gaps is "in most of the population, everyone who can works or else they starve", and the dominant factor in the countries with the largest gaps is "Islamic law and culture keeps most women out of the workplace", but neither of these says much about what is good for Western countries.

no, the hyper-stupid Left is talking about wage gaps. to such an extent that they have made it a multi-year talking point which figured in the last presidential election and will probably figure in the next.

Vox is simply refuting them. he made no assertions about whether women should be paid more, the same or less than men.

and that fact that YOU are trying to make this convo about the countries with the *greatest* wage disparity happened because ....

Blogger CM April 07, 2015 3:10 PM

I can't figure out why anyone would WANT to work. Some stupid meme about women having a period had one man comment "its woman's curse, deal with it." A woman responded with "then what's man's curse?"

Its like only these people would see working to make a living as something to be jealous of and aspire to. Even in work i enjoyed, it felt like drudgery and brain-death.

But these are also the same people that see pain in child birth as a huge accomplishment and lord it over others...

Blogger Hermit April 07, 2015 3:34 PM

I think this kind of issues are really just the symptom of a larger problem.
The battle to close wage gap is a consequence of a culture that deny gender differences and the fact that men and women have different roles in an healthy society.

As long as so called conservatives accept the premise that men and women are equal it's going to be impossible to turn the tide of degenerate liberalism and restore the sane ways.
The same goes for opposing the invasion of immigrants as long as we don't challenge cultural relativism and human biological equality.

Wow you are truly an imbecile.

What the evidence shows, when taken in it's entirety, is that wage disparity is NO indicator AT ALL of how nice it is to live someplace.

Blogger CarpeOro April 07, 2015 4:09 PM

Norway and Sweden... two Western states with rising nationalist parties because of how happy the citizenry are to be replaceable cogs in the machine of diversetopia. Where rape by the replacement third world cogs is at the levels you see in similar diversetopias in the USA, like New York, LA, and Chicago. Where your mileage will really vary for quality of life if you are male and a native.
Living near Chicago, and trying not to od on schadenfreude watching the elections today, I see two paths that each of those "nice" places on the list are likely to take. One is to drop off that list as the huge amounts of government meddling in every aspect of life are repealed by the growing nationalist movements. The other? Going down the same road as Chicago, where today two minorities square off to have control of the steering wheel as the city goes the way of Detroit. Don't see that happening? Neither candidate has a clue what to do, or if they have one are keeping their mouths shut because there is no way they would have even got on the ballot telling the truth. Detroit had far less debt when it started hemorrhaging productive people. Businesses are leaving, not being started, downsizing, or being bribed to stay with tax incentives. There is only one way this will end and it isn't good. I may just get to move back to Michigan as jobs move there instead.

Anonymous Yngvar April 07, 2015 4:09 PM

Leftists and especially feminist take everything autistically literal. They believe the slogans they scream are The Truth. So when they read sayings like "Time is Money" or "Money Equals Power" they demand equal speaking time at meetings and equal pay, all in the name of 'female empowerment'. It's ridiculous.

c - the nordic wage parity has been in place ... how long? you think wages were like this in the 1950s? as CarpeOro notes, the natives are getting kind of restless with Socialized State that permits most of this. they are certainly running into major funding problems with these programs and having to get into things like health care rationing.

I don't think blacks are bothered by such conditions given how little they do to improve themselves. Watching Democracy Now's lesbian do a Katrina story about a black body on the street for 2 weeks where she kept filming for several days asking any white people who drove by what they would do with the body I asked myself "why did none of the neighbors contact a coroner or done something themselves". An Asian or white might mow the lawn of an abandoned property next to theirs but a black never would. In a sense its what you have to do to be happy. Women grasp for social relationships at work to the point of ignoring patients, while men wouldn't punch a clock if they somehow received enough money for them to be content via lotto/inheritance.

Let's at least be honest. Vox is implying that lowering the wage gap between men and women will result in countries that look like
Togo
Rwanda
Burundi
Tanzania
Congo
Laos
Myanmar
Sierra Leone
Malawi
Uganda

As a result, Vox is suggesting that advocates "might like to do well to reconsider whether closing the wage gap is truly an objective worth pursuing"

It's the original implication that is a "gobsmackingly stupid idiocy."

However, it's is a gobsmackingly stupid idiocy that is derived from the same ideology that leads Vox to think that wmen's suffrage is bad, government spending is bad, divorce is bad, abortion is bad and paganism is bad when in fact none of these things are inherently bad.

Yes, he is.

Directly after listing these countries with the lowest wage gap he writes, "This suggests advocates might like to do well to reconsider whether closing the wage gap is truly an objective worth pursuing."

As though advocates of smaller wage gaps ought to reconsider their position lest.....lest what? Lest they become a country like those listed.

This one is pretty straight forward. And to quote a member of the Ilk: it's a " gobsmackingly stupid idiocy".

This one is pretty straight forward. And to quote a member of the Ilk: it's a " gobsmackingly stupid idiocy".

Or, y'know, you can think about it not being a directly causal statement.

The only reason the participation gap is so narrow is because life there is so objectively shitty that both sexes need to work full time to keep a family above water. There is some evidence that we're going the direction of two-earner households being mandatory to keep a family above water. That would sure close up the participation gap, but is it really a good thing?

OpenID cailcorishev April 07, 2015 7:50 PM

Yes, he is.

Nope, your comprehension skills are lacking. Advocates of "closing the gap" are the ones who claim that doing so will make life better for women, increase productivity, make the sun shine a little brighter, etc. Vox is simply pointing out that it hasn't done so in countries where there is no gap, so they're wrong. He's not claiming any causation at all; you're reading that into it.
