To be fair, the Vikings don't pick until 11

I can't stand their banter, but the interviews are often good.

They're keeping on topic. I don't think they're particularly skilled at speaking but they seem interested in the game and not politics.

Theirs.

The hosts are at a charity event of some kind that is running a raffle with a DJ behind them. Vox is dialed up.

I listened for a bit. Those during the interview didn't seem to know what Vox was talking about. I don't "game" at all. I did not know what Vox was talking about.

And the interviewers didn't seem to either.

I meant to say "doing"

Well, the female sounding voice can't be a woman because she hasn't talked about her relationships, her kids, her pets, and she hasn't yet disagreed with VD, let along refused to have sex with him.

Not sure I agree with Vox that better graphics equals more passive gaming experience.

I DO agree that MP teamwork in most gameplaying really sucks. I hate how little my co-players on Destiny involves ACTUAL teamwork, especially considering the way the different colour guns take down shields and such.

Everything is RUN-N-GUN and no thought whatsoever.

I always wanted to be in a clan, the kind that DISSECTED me & my friends in Halo 2. The dudes that butchered us methodically and surgically.

Better graphics past a certain point don't necessary make for a better gaming experience. Amen.

Blogger Michael Maier April 30, 2015 8:43 PM

I disagree with Vox on stories in games, though. Halo: CE is probably my favorite game ever because of how seamlessly the story works with the gameplay.

Anonymous Darth Toolpodicus April 30, 2015 8:43 PM

@Mike M.

I think they key is "past a certain point".

I was trying to call in. Kinda irritated they didn't let me talk - wanted to chat with you about the multiplayer aspects and the gameplay - story thing you brought up.

Blogger Student in Blue April 30, 2015 8:58 PM

Oh! I also wanted to talk about the slow decline of Sega, also a favorite talking point of mine.

Blogger LibertyPortraits April 30, 2015 8:59 PM

Hosts seemed unprepared with questions. They weren't able to keep the conversation going, Vox did an admirable job inserting insights and offering up softballs to consider talking more about. I wonder how much of that is because of how fundamentally different gaming is from regular human interaction, being action based. With three different hosts they should have kept up a much better flow, but I guess it is what it is, glad to have been able to listen in.

Anonymous dw April 30, 2015 9:01 PM

The only games where I care about the story and expect it to be well thought out are the Halo games. The story is an integral aspect of the franchise and gameplay since they've added so much depth and backstory to it without ruining it; they've kept it fresh and interesting.

Blogger Michael Maier April 30, 2015 9:01 PM

Eh... cut some slack. It sounded like they may have had trouble hearing, with all the ambient noise.

Anonymous dw April 30, 2015 9:05 PM

"Dreamcast was originally called the "Katana" ?!? They should have kept that."

I loved that system when it came out. It's a da,n shame it didn't go anywhere. Going from ps1 and n64 graphics to the dreamcast was an experience.

Anonymous I Mass Pit Lord April 30, 2015 9:17 PM

I loved the way the original Conker's Bad Fur Day told it's story.

There was one game I played mostly because of the story: Planescape: Torment, and in that game the story is entirely optional.

"Gunn then said when she broke the news to the students that all these people were gay, instead of them reacting positively as she had hoped, the students began to shout out “‘gross’ and ‘disgusting’ and ‘these people are sick.’”

At this point Gunn said she realized she would have to come up with a more creative way to get her students to think differently. That’s when she and a few like-minded teachers held a meeting to determine how they could weave the promotion of homosexuality into the curriculum, beginning with math."

It started out slow but ended up being a great interview. If anyone listening wasn't familiar with Vox I think they walked away thinking he sounded very professional, well spoken, knowledgeable...specifically about gaming. He is insanely knowledgeable about gaming in general and it shows. Interesting to me was how Vox's personality ends up dominating the conversation. He becomes THE authority. In a world of scazified re-re's I'm sure people find his deep theory, meta-gaming, insight...very...refreshing.

@ChicagoRefugee

You ain't the only one bud.

Blogger Brad Andrews May 01, 2015 1:38 AM

The comments about the low value of story may apply far more to 1st person shooters and perhaps a limited number of others.

Leisure Suit Larry or Monkey Island wouldn't have had a game without the story. They were definitely not movies either.

Your scope may be a bit too narrow.

The other factor left out is that some of us don't want to have to always play in hard core mode, yet we still want to play games to have fun. Many games often forget that.

Anonymous Ain May 01, 2015 3:27 AM

Michael Maier: And who is this chick? I'm falling in love with her.

That's the whole purpose of the token radio chick in these shows.

Did you miss the bit about Day of the Tentacle? My scope is obviously not too narrow. The games you are talking about are similar, in one case from the same company and built on the same engine, and successfully integrated story with gameplay.

Also, Leisure Suit Larry was a joke game. It wasn't a very good game series in its own right, even though it was funny due to the subject matter.

Blogger Remo May 01, 2015 5:43 AM

Now we can please get a gamergate video like this? They didn't interrupt you, they didn't preempt you, you got to speak for long periods about what you were doing and everything flowed smoothly.

I'm not much of a gamer anymore but as soon as you began speaking about Warlords (which I played for hours in my misspent youth) all my attention was on the podcast. Sad to say I never played Day of the Tentacle but I was hoping for an Erik the Unready, Spellcasting 101, or Leather Goddesses of Phobos plug. Oh well maybe next time. You've actually made me want to check out First Sword which I was not interested in - ho hum - another game with orcs and elves. I've gotten Orcs and Elves through Fantasy General, Warlords, Warlords 2, Warlords 2 Construction set, Warcraft 1-3, any game based on Tolkiens Middle Earth, and any fantasy game PERIOD since Ultima. I am Orc'd out.

The game you were describing however is sounding more like Blood Bowl than a simple RPG fighting click fest game. I'm sure you've discussed this already at length on this board but I tend to read the political and gamergate articles only and I honestly didn't think much about your game production. Picking teams of fantasy characters for gladiatorial combat.... hmmm... well that is a different spin and something fresh. One wonders will there be greater than one on one contests available? Larger group matches where the proper mix of characters is more important rather than just the standard "Pick the largest and strongest - give him the most expensive stuff - go". I can see Goblin skirmishers distracting the all powerful Ogre/Troll/Large Orc at a critical time allowing a fast moving Chiu to get in a critical strike. That sounds like fun and certainly different than the I can click faster than you plus I'm Korean so don't bother you lose present environment. Now I am genuinely curious. The click fest of "create more stuff faster and send it towards the enemy base" has gotten pretty old for me at least. Managing a Blood Bowl team however or doing something fantasy football like but with all sorts of bizarre races that has some appeal.

> I remember playing the original arcade Pong! at the bar. Good times.

Pong was OK, but Space Invaders was the real time killer.

Blogger Nate May 01, 2015 8:46 AM

So Vox... if you were going to make a first person shooter... it would be be like what Bungie did with Destiny

Blogger Student in Blue May 01, 2015 8:58 AM

Nate, sleep it off. You're drunk.

Blogger GoldenPigsy May 01, 2015 9:47 AM

For the record, I am one of those people who was looking forward to those weird Japanese launch titles for the Dreamcast. I was also disappointed that some of them were delayed over and over and over. I'm talking about Shenmue, specifically.

Also, I had no idea that western devs were told to piss off by Sega of Japan. That's... bad. And kind of surprising given the popularity of the Genesis/Mega Drive in Europe. Do you have any more info about their reasoning? I'd love to hear more about this, and I'm honestly surprised nobody has talked to you or any other Dreamcast devs who got screwed back in those days.

Although I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I remember when Hardcore Gaming 101 wrote up an overview on Christian themed FPS games. They talked more about Vox in their brief summation on The War in Heaven than they did about the game itself. Did this guy even bother to contact you for an interview on it?

http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/christianfps/christianfps.htm

Blogger szook May 01, 2015 10:11 AM

I have not made it all the way through the interview, but it was indeed going very well. (Especially after that awkwardness at the beginning). Way to go, holding forth on this one, Vox.

Blogger Brad Andrews May 01, 2015 10:31 AM

Did you miss the bit about Day of the Tentacle?

That was a very short part and one off.

My scope is obviously not too narrow. The games you are talking about are similar, in one case from the same company and built on the same engine, and successfully integrated story with gameplay.

Your other examples were FPS games, not any other genre. Empire building games or even tablet games where you are working through things have some story involved.

I never argued that LSL was a good game, just that it would not exist without some story.

How much is store "theme" is an open question as well. I would guess you would completely eliminate the two while I would tie them closer together.

I would have to think about other games more, but doesn't something like Command and Conquer or Age of Empires benefit more from a strong story/theme? Yes, you are repeating the same task, but doing it with a light theme is better than none at all.

I did play Startergy a lot on my iPad, but that was the rare exception of something very repetitive. (It is a well designed simple Risk clone I wish I could get on Android.)

Even World of Warcraft had significant story, though I would agree that it was the exception since no other MMO is as successful, something that has allowed Blizzard to do very poor work with their franchise. A lack of competition breeds complacency.

Blogger CarpeOro May 01, 2015 10:48 AM

" I can see Goblin skirmishers distracting the all powerful Ogre/Troll/Large Orc at a critical time allowing a fast moving Chiu to get in a critical strike."

Agreed. I was thinking of the same thing. A single goblin on a Troll? Jelly. 10? Like a pack of wolves and a buffalo - could be interesting. Of course the dynamics would be very different on some levels but if I understand the concept behind it, it would be possible.

Blogger Remo May 01, 2015 11:04 AM

I do admit I *still* play the original Warlords and my favorite starting force is the Horse Lords. Fast, strong, and they own the dwarves and later the giants. Lord Bane is perhaps the last to fall after I declare "Off with their miserable heads!!" :D

Blogger Vox May 01, 2015 2:05 PM

HORSE LORDS! I love the Horse Lords. They rule.

The Horse Lords had a temple on the way out of their area - getting everybody blessed was dirt simple. Quickly run up to the North and West and grab the cities there. You smash the Selentines first then drive the Gray Dwarves back into the mountain pass. The Selentines don't get any good units unless you count the mighty Jessarton light calvary. You can own the North West part of the map quickly, fly or boat over and grab the little island, then begin the massive war in the South against the Giants, Elves, and Orcs in East. Memories....
