Literary journalism

I think this must represent a new low where the coverage of books is involved. Lana Jordan busts Jane Carnall of the Guardian, who openly admits that she hasn't read the very books that she "reviewed" and gave one-star ratings on Amazon.

Tom Knighton goes into more detail on this: "When we talk about why we despise CHORFs so much, it’s because of crap like this.  Carnall isn’t trying to just keep Sad Puppies nominees from getting awards — which has its own brand of pathetic — instead, she’s actively working to destroy people’s livelihoods.  Keeping a Hugo out of their hands isn’t enough for her.  No, she wants to destroy their careers.  Why?  *GASP* Because they disagree with her!!! We now see the face of evil, and believe it or not, it’s not Vox Day.  Shocking, I know."

This is what we are dealing with. No compromise, no retreat, no apologies, no mercy. They started this cultural war. We will finish it.

Vox, have you and the Castalia House crew noticed a drop in the Amazon ratings of your nominated works?

How effective is their attempt to fake review the ratings down?

I wouldn't think it could actually work with how much Amazon values its rating system, but I'm curious

No doubt she'll claim that she "pre-reviewed" them based on what she thought the books would be about, which will miraculously be 100% true when she finally gets around to "reading" the works in the Hugo packet.

Larry Correia said he started Sad Puppies to prove the Liberal bias in the Hugos. SJWs deny bias exists.

If a new SF/F story were published today, about a mother of a special needs child living on a frontier world who despises the corruption of the Ruling Class and decides to fight for justice, would SJW's embrace it?

If a second story were released next week, about a young man raised in poverty because of his caste, who builds a time machine to the future where he rises above the bigotry to the highest office in the land, would SJWs embrace it?

What if Sarah Palin wrote the first story, and Clarence Thomas the second, both thinly disguised memoirs? Would SJWs embrace their stories, would they even bother to read them? Or would the stories be rejected and denounced unread simply because of who wrote them?

And that's as much as you need to know to understand why Sad Puppies is not only right, but just.

So let me get this straight. She thought she'd post personal attacks in the guise of obviously fake, one-star reviews on Amazon as an "experiment" to see if we'd respond to them as if they were personal attacks in the guise of obviously fake, one-star reviews? Apparently recognizing and calling out obvious bullshit for what it is makes Vox and his "followers" horrible people. Brilliant logic there, Jane.

Blogger Salt April 24, 2015 1:54 PM

WW, in this case I see it a bit different. It's not that she's a lying bitch, but that she negligently harmed others not her target by defaming their reputations as to knowingly, intentionally, and willfully experiment with her target.

Had her reviews been reviews for the ostensible purpose of reviewing, she'd be just a lying bitch. But, that's not the case. She falsely, and with full knowledge, intent, and willfully, used the review process for other purpose. She said so herself. It's that other purpose that gives rise to defamation; libel.

She can't claim she was reviewing as she expressly said otherwise. Neither has she read the works.

Hey, I have a question about black knighting.

If for example, my Animation and Comics writing instructor at school decided to mention that early Superman borrowed heavily from the book Gladiator yet FAILED to mention that Batman is essentially a rich white, urban version of Zorro and that a lot of his early tales were rip-offs of stories from The Shadow, is it okay to brow beat him into including that information about Batman if he must include that information about Superman by calling out his white guilt and calling him racist against brown Hispanic people like me and threatening to go to a proper authority about the matter?

Is it also okay to call this very instructor 'whitey' if he also went out of his way to mention that the early Detective Comics runs back when it was an anthology were racist because they featured Chinese folks as the villains a lot of the time?

Furthermore, is it also okay to snarkily reply, 'Oh, like the Chinese aren't the villains most of the time in real life anyways,' and suggest he read up on Chinese history even before greedy white Imperialists ran that country through almost as fast as Japan did?

I'm a long-time SF fan. I cut my teeth on Edgar Rice Burroughs, and I loved the golden age authors. I lost interest when SF became fantasy. Dragons and elves are not SF, and not interesting to me.

I was aware that things had got worse. Even Heinlein started writing tripe like A Stranger in a Strange Land. I started reading a few highly-regarded modern books by Orson Scott Card and Larry Correia, but frankly they were boring and I never finished them.

I had no idea how bad the field had become before reading this blog. The link to last year's Hugo-award winning short story the other day was frankly horrifying.

The recent thread about George R R Martin piqued my interest, as I believe he has written some popular stuff, but I'd never read any of it, having no interest in fantasy. So last night I read one of his stories (The Guardians) published in Analog. (no, that's not where my handle comes from. It's from the title of the novel The Analog Men, by Damon Knight)

What a disappointment.

The man writes like a girl. The kind of girly style that I think was last popular about 1930. The only thing that was missing was a character named Aloysius.

I have no interest in fantasy or video games, so I'm not likely to buy anything Vox is selling, but I wholeheartedly support him in this cultural war. We have to push back on any and all fronts. Give the bastards hell.

"I have no interest in fantasy or video games..."

Wow. And yet you have the balls to call Larry's work and Card's work boring.

Granted, I'll give you that whenever Owen Pitt is a focus in Monster Hunter and not any of the more numerous believable and exciting characters (I love you long time, Agent Franks), the plot tends to pull the drag shoot which is sad since Owen is supposed to be an author surrogate for Larry and Larry is a MUCH more exciting guy. I'll also give you that Ender's Game also tended to pull the drag shoot as well though I can't speak for Card's other books since Ender's Game is the only thing of his I've read.

But really? You have no interest in fantasy or video-games? Not even the trappings and set pieces of the former? Need I remind you that 2001: A Space Odyssey had awesome shit like an AI that was obsessed with its mission, monoliths that through techno-sorcery turned apes into men (only for men to turn apes into men like apes in Planet of the Apes, but still), orbital death stations, a rift in fictional space-time that turns people into star children, and space craft, but damn it if I could get through the book or the movie without wishing I was reading a star wars book or movie or hell, even a Star Trek one.

Maybe your problem is less with the pageantry of fantasy and more so with how most people tend to execute it?

For that matter, have you ever really played a legit video-game?

Also, this guy interviewing you is not that bright. When you dropped some truth on him ("if everyone was homosexual, the human race would rapidly cease to exists [therefore it is a birth defect])".

This is up: #GamerGate: Vox Day Says Some Races Smarter Than Others, Gay is a Birth Defect

Being on live camera is actually not easy. FWIW, I'd recommend (a) keeping the eyes on the recording camera rather than looking away so often, and (b) wearing at least a collared shirt or a sports jacket. Just a thought. The content should be the only thing that matters (and the content here is superlative), but a good camera presence is like an effective prose style -- it can help or hinder getting the message across most effectively.

Great chair and background, though.

(And no, not only could I NOT do better myself, I'd certainly do far, FAR worse.)

That is a great interview because it crystallizes the issue with gamergate and the puppies. It's also flushing out all of the hidden enemies.

From the comment sections and on Twitter, many do not fully understand what the battle is about.

The description on the youtube link says VD is up for a 2015 HugE Award.

How big is it?

The Throne chair in the video looks like it came from Narnia. Nice symbolism with the lion heads at the top right and left.

Mateo: That was s small friendly banter. I grew up watching El Zorro series, dubbed in Spanish. I do not know about that other stuff. I can hear the show's music in my head right now .... Zorro, Zorro, Zorroooo. Tu espada no faltaraaaaaaa .....

BGS:

When I kicked one guy out of my house I had to take my computer apart & take a hammer to my hard drive so I wouldn't have to worry about anything.

Around 87 or so I first heard of viruses that can hide in the CMOS - you'd have to do a battery pull and let it sit for a few hours to be sure. So when the latest Snowden leaks added storage firmware backdoors to what we knew aboyt Stuxnet... well, if you half a brain you would know we always get the monkey model.

Mom, when she did *mumble* had a MWO and burn bags. I hear Germany is buying typewriters again too.

I use a drill when disposing HDDs. Mostly switched over to SSDs though. Not into porn, I had friends who spent thousands on tapes in the 90's and I saw them getting addicted. I mean, after a while it's about as interesting as watching an engine run.

Guess some piggies just happen to be more equal. I found it very amusing how not having anything against but not caring is construed as hate and harrasment.

"She claims Vox attacks 1 star reviews. Vox says he attacks fake reviews. To test her hypothesis she leaves a fake 1 star review."

She admitted to leaving fake reviews on things that you could read in less than a day, was she afraid the thought process would infect her

"SJW: Choice is yours. Submit or-- Ilk: BANG!"Sorry, we don't give trigger warnings""

Sorry the price of ammo has gone up.

"Well, I guess I should start posting with my full name,"

They might try calling your place of work trying to get you fired. The feminists at Jezebel have done worse for less.

"Whenever I don't think the bar can be lowered the SJW's just dig a little deeper." After Dohner was caught & killed I couldn't believe leftists still questioned if he was fired by a Mexican supervisor for racism instead of bad behavior. Yea someone went on a shooting spree that included a judges family sounds like a well behaved black to me.

Thank you for the feedback, everyone.

EMM: Oh, dear, have I committed lèse–majesté? No personal attack on either intended, but the one book of each author that I started to read didn't hold my interest. One was Ender's Game, which I don't have to explain to you, obviously. Correia's book, I don't recall the title, was about a world that was an obvious analogue of Earth in the cold war period. It spent so much time on a rather clumsy introduction of the scenario - America, USSR, Islam equivalents - that I lost interest before any plot development appeared.

It's funny you should mention 2001. I saw the movie, didn't read the book. I thought it was not a patch on the original short story, The Sentinel, on which it was allegedly (very loosely) based, and which I thought was one of Arthur C Clarke's best.. In fact, the only thing the two had in common was the monolith (which was translocated from the moon to earth, and from the future to the distant past, and its function and significance completely changed, so that in fact it wasn't even the same monolith). I also thought it was derivative of Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination, AKA Tiger, Tiger, and its reliance on cool technology, death stars and explosions make 2001 a perfect example of the degeneration of science fiction. In its early stages, anyway - the Star Trek/Star Wars phase.

Of course I've played video games! I had an Atari console and played Space Invaders and tank battles. Not the same?

Perhaps the best clue I can give you as to where I stand on fantasy and video games is just to say that I once started to read The Lord of the Rings, and I thought it was silly. Yes, I'm just a hopeless barbarian.

Noah B, thanks for the tip. I've visited Wright's blog, and my impression is that he's somewhat of a leftist utopian himself. He told me that he had a friend for ten years before he noticed that his friend was black. I find it hard to imagine a writer being so unobservant.

This is relevant to the topic of this post. Yes, I absolutely would decline to read a book by an author with whose politics I disagreed. You see, I'm a genuine racist, and I wear the label proudly. I'm from South Africa, and I lost my country to this equality crap. So, understandably, I think, I don't want to see, hear or read about Africans. I would not bother to read a book by an author who is known not to know the difference between a White man and an African. That is, one who is likely to write about what I call GNOMEs. That stands for a Gratuitous Negro Obtruding to Mimic a European. You know the type; he's the obligatory black man in every modern movie, book or game who doesn't belong there, playing the role that in real life (or the original book) is a White man - the scientist, inventor or computer genius. Or Norse god.

Poor Guy, here's that link. You won't thank me. Have your barf bag ready.

Analog Man, I know what you mean. There's been no decent mainstream SF since Ringworld . . . until now. Try some of the stuff at Vox's publishing house. Vox Day, A Man Disrupted. Tom Kratman, Big Boys Don't Cry. Wright, Awake in the Night Land (helps if you read the original which is free on Kindle). There are decent authors, you've come the correct place.

Anonymous Nah April 25, 2015 8:50 AM

"There's been no decent mainstream SF since Ringworld "

There was plenty of good mainstream SF in the 1980s.

Vance (Araminta Station)
Gibson (Neuromancer)
Footfall, Oath of Fealty (Niven and Pournelle)
Hyperion (Simmons)
Liege Killer (Hinz)
Ender's Game etc., Alvin Maker series (Card)
