Mailvox: We are lessened

I just received this news:
"Hello everyone, I am Outlaw's nephew. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, unfortunately Outlaw passed away last night at around 7:30. Personally, I had no idea my Uncle had this many followers on his blog. He was always a bright person and always had his own unique opinion on any topic. His death was a very tragic loss to our family. I would like to thank all of you for your prayers and support."

He'd predicted he wouldn't live to see Easter.

I know he's with our Lord, free of pain, it that doesn't still my sense of loss.
Outlaw X, aka Equus Pallidus, was one of the original Dread Ilk. He was combative and argumentative and difficult and smart and generous and fiercely loyal. He was an early supporter of my writing; he once bought 10 copies of Summa Elvetica for other Ilk who could not afford them. Longtime Ilk will recall that he could get overheated at times, but he always settled down sooner or later.

I wish I'd had the chance to tell him about the Hugo wipeout yesterday. If he'd been better, there is no way he wouldn't have been a part of it. And he was one of the primary reasons the Ilk became known as the Dread Ilk. His trampling of Michael Medved on Medved's own show when Medved was waxing outraged in response to one of my WND columns was epic; I can still here him saying "You made that up in your haid" in that strong Texas accent.

Death comes for us all in time, but few of us will be remembered as fondly as Equus Pallidus. Rest in peace, my friend, and give my best regards to Bane when you see him.

"Awww. Another good man gone. RIP, EP.
Here's my favorite EP quote:

"Look guys, I am going to have to start that class, I've been meaning to. Called:

"How to do a proper standoff"

1) Don't shoot yourself, shoot them
2) Tell them if they bring you a pack smokes you'll come out.
3) When they bring the smokes shoot them
4) wound a few, when they ask for a cease fire to gather wounded, agree.
5) shoot them as they gather wounded.
6) Wait and see if they will fall for it again.
7) tell them you got a bomb after you spot the sniper and if it blows they are all dead.
when they back away far enough, shoot the sniper (oh the Irony)
9) Tell them you don't want to hurt anyone else, you are sick of the killing
10) wait to see if they fall for it.

OK the rest is proprietary, you'll have to pay like everybody else.

I managed his VPFL team in that inaugural season in 2006, as he never played FF before, so he asked me to draft and run the team for him. In his words, he was to be Jerry Jones while I was to be his Jimmy Johnson.

Too bad our results made me out to be more like Wade Phillips...then again, he certainly was no meddler and micro-manager like Jerry Jones is.

More than anything, EP wanted us to beat Vox in a head-to-head matchup. I don't remember if we did manage to win one of them, but I do remember losing the first matchup to Vox that season by a very small margin, and EP was disappointed but excited at the possibility of winning the rematch since our loss was so close.

While we failed to make the playoffs, the 5 keepers the Masonville Marauders inherited from our team the following season where the foundation for his 2007 championship.

Anyhow, thanks to EP for allowing me to run his team...even though we lost, it did gain me entrance in the VPAFL, for which the champion of every season gains one of the spots in the following season for the VPFL.

While I have had an even more dismal performance in that league for the past 7 years (haven't made it to the playoffs even once), our repeat champion, Zek (Cranberry Bogs) has decided to bow out of next year's VPFL season and asked that I replace him as the VPAFL representative.

In the memory of Equus Pallidus, Outlaw of the Dreak Ilk, I'm coming for you Vox...I'm gonna at least try to get that one victory he wanted so badly.

I can hardly believe it's been almost nine years since Outlaw's exchange with Medved. I remember that episode well, but I didn't start commenting here until a few years later and didn't realize that was his handiwork until now. When I did start commenting here, Outlaw was one of the first Ilk I talked to. He was cantankerous for sure, but also unfailingly colorful, helpful, and dedicated to preserving freedom. I don't know all the details of his struggle with cancer but he did tell us enough for us to know that he suffered greatly, while showing us that he faced his suffering with bravery, strength, and faith. We'll miss you until we see you again, Outlaw. Godspeed.

I've been talking with Gregg for going on 15 years now... electronicly...through the mail... through email... and on the phone.

Back in the early days Equus Pallidus was The Defender of the Roman Catholic Faith on this blog. If you wanted a Protestant vs Catholic debate Gregg would give it to you. He held up his end well too. I doubt many priests had their RCC dogma down half as good as he did. The man was still upset about not having Mass said in Latin more than 40 years after they started doing it in the local language.

I doubt Latin is the official language of heaven, but I hope they had some worship in Latin yesterday in his honor.

Gregg was a fan of varmint hunting and by all accounts a solid mid range (400 to 700 yard) shooter. It would have been a blast to gun down hogs on his peanut patch with him. I'm a little worried he's gone on before me, but its heaven and I don't think they ever run short on reloading components.
