Are you still buying the "oh, we are just poor homeless writers who only want to join the discourse and find a place at the table" propaganda? They are fascists, they want control, and any publisher who was foolish enough to permit these entryists a place at the table will soon find that he's been pushed to the side, if he hasn't been already.

Diversity is self-destruction, because a house divided against itself cannot stand.

Meanwhile, publishing is actually 74 percent female and rising. As recently as 2010, the industry was 70 percent female.
It’s no secret that lots of women work in publishing. But just how many more women work in publishing than men? In PW’s recent Salary Survey (Aug. 2) one statistic stuck out: 85% of publishing employees with less than three years of experience are women.

Total Responses: 1,584
70% Female 30% Male

Under 3 Years Experience: 164
85% Female 15% Male

3 to 6 Years Experience: 388
82% Female 18% Male
That was then. This is now: "Women accounted for 74% of the publishing workforce and men only 26%."

LOL at the pictures.

A lot of these need to take their own advice: e.g. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 13.

So much unintentional humor, especially if you look at the pictures. My favorite is number 12. I don't think she was intentionally trolling the reporters, but it sure comes off that way. "Ain't nobody got time for that!"

The publishing industry is heavily dominated by women, and yet, somehow, us SWM are still able to control everything for our nefarious ends. Damn we rock!

It's not that I'm having trouble believing they are writers seeking discourse and a place at the table. I'm just having trouble believing these people are writers at all.
Each and every one of these indignant bleatings is more Twitter than turn of phrase.
Context? Eloquence? Ain't nobody got time for that...apparently.

Well, I've had about enough of this crap. Paid my $40 to be a supporter. Was wondering if I should be a sad puppy or a rabid one. Always liked that Ol' Yeller. All the way to the brutal end.

Blogger Krul April 17, 2015 5:37 AM

I guess the brainless hypocrisy is so obvious that it doesn't need to be mentioned. I mean the fact that this is blatantly racist and sexist, first in its ignorantly condescending tone and second in the content of so many of the messages. "Sit down and let us abolish you," "Take a vacation (a long one)," "Read less straight white men,” "“She’s coming for you," “You have not doomed us. You’ve doomed yourselves.”

One more thing, "She's coming for you." Is that supposed to be a threat? Imagine if that came from someone in GG or Sad Puppies. Imagine if we talked about "abolishing" POC. They would be hysterical.

Blogger frigger611 April 17, 2015 5:41 AM

Their statements are in quotes (their unsaid implications are in parenthesis...)

1. “Diversity is not publishing the one story. It’s publishing multiple stories from people of diverse backgrounds (as long as those people share the same narrow interpretation of leftist

—Karissa Chen

2. “My main characters are not always black. (They also don't always wear their hair like Terl from "Battlefield Earth.") ”
—Sophfronia Scott

3. “Read less straight white men. (Do feel free however, to continue to take advantage of all of the wonderful things they've invented for you. Like civilization. And cat litter...) ”
—Natalie Eilbert

4. “We read. (And buy books....As long as they have the phrase "Shades of Grey" somewhere in their title...)”
—Lisa Lucas

5. “Get over it. (Like I've gotten over the fact that my dried apple-cheeked face repels men and frightens small children.)”

—Lauren Hilger

8. “We owe you nothing.” (And yet we'll insist that you fork over large amounts of money to pay for our social engineering programs and makework jobs for Women's Studies graduates.)

9. “Grow up.” (We need SOMEONE to act like a responsible adult around here. Otherwise WE might be forced to do so...)

10. “Look out the window.” (The fact that I say this is a room without windows should indicate the caliber of my thought processes.)
—Jane Ciabattari

11. “Sit down and let us abolish you.” (Because gleefully acquiescing to your own destruction is FUN and will make you look enlightened! Just ask Malmo, Sweden!)
—Franny Choi

12. “Ain’t nobody got time for that!?!” (I wasn't taking this seriously and just said the first thing that popped into my head.)

Are these actual, published authors

They appear to be at a conference, maybe a writing conference or education conference. So: no.

In that quote from Sailer's article, 85% of the new employees in publishing (0-3 years of experience) are now women. By the time you add in the homosexual and non-white men (most of the men in these pictures appear to be both), it appears the industry has stopped hiring straight white men at all. That's what happens, whether you're talking about a corporate environment, girl altar servers, or the Obama administration: once you reach a critical mass of women (and "minorities"), they soon take over entirely. They begin to drive out the men out of revenge and envy, and they create an environment no normal man would wish to enter anyway.

The mainstream publishing industry is lucky that other people provide its raw materials and its tools and factories have already been built and will almost run themselves. They'll be able to roll along for a while, thinking themselves successful. But eventually they'll be burning incense around a printing press and sacrificing a chicken to it, begging it to come back to life and print a new bestseller for them.

Blogger Joshua Dyal April 17, 2015 7:49 AM

I love Steve Sailer's earlier article on diversity (indirectly) and how nobody actually wants it. Heh. http://www.unz.com/isteve/george-lucas-strikes-back-against-marin-county/

Are these actual, published authors or are they "writers" like Damian Walter? Because I don't think I've ever seen a single one of those names before, and I am a voracious reader.

Cheryl Strayed wrote a highly celebrated book (Oprah book club!) that just got turned into a movie. Which flopped.

Although I don't think the expectations were very high anyway. $40 M gross was probably about all it could ever have hoped for.

The book's terrible. Before I realized it was an Oprah Book club cause celebre, I tried to read it because I love backpacking, and it was a book about backpacking. Or so I thought. About 30% in, I gave up because nobody was doing anything except expecting us to have sympathy for the most unlikable and stupid woman who ever wrote, who had a host of problems of her own making that she refused to take any responsibility for.

Anonymous Steve April 17, 2015 7:57 AM

What Jim said.

The old Soviet Union used to blame "spies and saboteurs" for everything. Nazis blamed The Jews. The SJW's blame straight white men.

To listen to them, you'd think the world of book writing looks like a lemon party at John Scalzi's house.

But it doesn't. The biggest selling books of recent years have been written by the likes of J.K. Rowling, Suzanne Collins, Stephanie Myers, and that 50 Shades of Grey lady.

Not a lot of straight while maleness there. Lots of white females though.

And yet, the rainbow haired she-twinks on Buzzfeed aren't raging against straight white female dominance of popular fiction.

T___ K______'s Hugo acceptance speech is more urgent than ever.

I'm tempted to write something so heterocisnormative, so white, male, gender-binaried, triggering and microaggressive - actually, make that macroaggressive - that it makes a SJW curl up into a ball and cry lilac-scented tears just on seeing the cover.

The working title is Richard Nixon Conquers the Space Whores.

Blogger Cataline Sergius April 17, 2015 7:58 AM

This was kind of pathetic to look at. People who have been conned and are so invested in the con, they can't realize they were just marks.

These are products of America's higher education system and they have been lied to all through the higher education system.

First, they were lied to when they were told they had a reason to be there in the first place.

Second, they were lied to when they were told they were getting an education at all. Maoist indoctrination is not in fact a classical education.

Third, they were really lied to about who good an idea it was to go into a mortgage's worth of student loan debt.

Now, they have been thrust into the world with an over inflated sense of self importance and a very unrealistic view of the measure of their own talents. And the world simply doesn't care about them at all. It is fact rejecting the dull and mediocre.

Fortunately their education has trained them how to cope with this matter. Blame the White Straight Male.

If you have a problem and it's clearly beyond your control, it is always the fault of the Straight White Male.

OpenID cailcorishev April 17, 2015 7:58 AM

I know these messages are supposed to fill me with fear, but I am instead filled with laughter.

That's the funny thing: I know that every one of these people would watch my throat being cut (they wouldn't have the guts to do it themselves) and walk away laughing. And I know that the people in power, who run the armies and police forces, are more on their side than mine, and in many cases would love to do it for them if they could get away with it.

And yet they're so ridiculous that it's impossible to fear them. And that's one of the main reasons they win, despite being entirely unequipped for battle.

When I pick up a new book to read, I rarely notice the author. Until I've finished reading and really enjoyed it, then I start hunting down the author to read more.

"When I pick up a new book to read, I rarely notice the author. Until I've finished reading and really enjoyed it, then I start hunting down the author to read more."

I used to think this way until I wasted hours of my life in recent months reading utter drivel that, almost to a story, was written by women. As VD has noted, women nearly always write male characters as women in mens' suits, or failing that, as men the way women are convinced men think and behave.

An axiom of reality is: When a single group is passionately favored by a coercive system (the state, publishing gate-keepers, etc.) members of that group inevitably weaken.

As publishing has openly suppressed alternatives to "womyns" stories and female (black, brown, gay, trans, etc.) authors, members of the favored groups turn out works of declining quality. How could it be otherwise, when those works no longer need to survive in the shark-infested, obstacle-strewn seas of the untamed marketplace?

Such suppression positively screams two things:
1. The objects to whom we provide special help are the equivalent of cognitively impaired people requiring special services, and
2. The product of our favored groups is too weak to survive without actively impeding access to disfavored alternatives.

Now, when I see an intriguing title but notice a woman's name as author, I move on to the next possibility.

Being female myself, i don't notice this as much. I'm fascinated about how to write a male voice convincingly, but even in my head, men become blank slates because i can't flesh them out without them sounding like ME.

I read mostly christian authors and YA fiction. The shite that infests adult fiction is still shunned in those realms... so other than female writers like Lori Wick and the other one i haven't read since middle school, i largely don't face the same problems you get in other genres that SHOULD turn out higher quality stuff.

Was at the GCJ (Genesee County Jail) waiting for the deputy to escort me upstairs, and while I was waiting at the desk for the individual to be brought in, I bumped into one of the volunteer chaplains. I introduced myself, and we got to talking, and he began lecturing me on white privilege (I don't think he liked a collared, white guy walking around his jail, but that's only a guess).

I was polite. Afterwards I went to the parking structure and saw drive out of the structure in what I guessed was a 2008 Cadillac. I have driven the same 99 Chevy Silverado since 2005. My white privilege however is showing...my old girl finally gave up the ghost...and this morning I will test drive a 2006 Dakota. It is black however...so that has got to shift the scales of justice a bit. I really have to check my privilege, but I wonder precisely how I go about that?

I wrote a book, and as an unpublished and clueless wanna-be author, I wonder if I should fudge my biographical data to improve my chances?

If you want a picture of the future, imagine a stiletto heel stamping on a white male human face - for ever.

Once upon a time, it may have been possible to believe that they honestly only wanted equal representation. But anyone who still believes that now is actively refusing to pay attention. Those signs are crystal clear: as long as there is a single straight white male in the industry, they will continue beating the war drums until he is "abolished."

Look at the fear on the faces of the men in some of those pictures. Even the gay blacks don't look like they feel safe. Their faces scream, "I'm holding the sign! Is this feminist enough? I'll wear the T-shirt too! Please don't push me out with the boys! They make me play dodgeball, and it hurts!"

Blogger Plump Pleasant Plumber April 17, 2015 10:35 AM

As has been noted before, feminism is just marxism with a dress on. I get the feeling that they're trying on the Mao flavor right now. Marxists cannot allow dissent. Have you noticed how they try to indicate inevitability? Of course you have!

What we do have is a publishing house publishing works of the strain that grew sci-fi to it's heyday while it's competitors are slowly committing ideological hari-kari with authors and editors that produce unwanted propaganda.

not sure what you're talking about, unless you mean a local run courier or bus job or something. but those are filled by Class D or chauffeur licenses.

CDL-As with some endorsements ( hazmat, tanker, etc ), a couple of years experience and an ass of steel can pull down six figures pretty easy.

which isn't as impressive as it used to be ( they could pull down +70k back in the 80s ) but is still pretty damn good for what amounts to a blue collar, low skill job.

of course, there's not much home time in an OTR job, which is why they have so much trouble keeping drivers in them.

regional company is advertising for drivers on the radio near me offering $20 / hr with full benny package, holiday + vacation, 401k with company match, full health insurance, etc. for a 'home nightly' job.

that's pretty damn good in this economy.

Blogger Marissa April 17, 2015 12:59 PM

When I was looking around in Texas, the starting salaries for OTR looked like not much more than $30K

key word being 'starting'. inappropriate word being 'salary'.

CDL-As are typically paid on miles driven. lot of them used to be loaded only, nowadays a lot of places are paying ALL miles regardless of load.

starting pay is often low 40 cents a mile.

you are log constrained to 11 driving hrs per day and a little over 5 days per week ( highly simplified, but this is what it amounts to for pay purposes ). call it ~600 miles / day for true long haul with not much more than fuel and scale house stops.

600 * 5 * $.4 == $1,200 / week which is north of $50k / year

now, if your pay is loaded miles only that's going to cut into that quite a bit. hopefully you'll get some tripod runs that keep your deadhead miles under 20% of driven miles. hook and drop for a terminal company or Walmart or something would be almost 100% 'loaded' anyways.

you go hammer down on a Cali to Fla run you can easily log over 750 miles / day ( Utah actually has interstate with an 80mph limit posted ).

many places are also offering 4-7 thousand dollar sign on bonuses and a lot of places are starting to get into an hourly 'retention' pay for while you're hung up waiting to deliver or get loaded.

the KEYS are, you need a clean MVR, a couple of years of experience, the ability to piss clean and a willingness to be in the seat for 250+ days a year.

if you or someone you know is interested, Hobby Lobby is hiring and guaranteeing +4,750 miles a week. i don't know their cpm but they've loaded up on the rest of the bennies:
http://www.drivehobbylobby.com/

4750 * .4 == $1,900 / week for all miles or a min of $950 for loaded only ( because you're going to have to haul the empty trailer back from the retail store ).

as an added bonus, you get to work for a company that hates women and is Christian.

also, you can spend gobs of time yakking on a hands free headset phone.

actually, now i'm baffled. i don't know how in the heck they can guarantee +4500 miles / week. log rules limit you to 60hrs in 7 days or 70hrs in 8 days before you need to do a reset break.

60hrs ( and you don't get all 60 for driving, you have fueling, rest stops, pretrip inspections, yaddayadda ) * 70mph is only 4200 miles.

*shrugs*

but if they're paying deadhead miles, it doesn't matter. even if you only trip 3000 a week, that's still $1200.

i wouldn't complain about that for a blue collar job.

Blogger Marissa April 17, 2015 3:39 PM

Yeah, that's great for blue collar work. Thanks for breaking it down. I'm not looking for a job, but I'll give this info, especially about Hobby Lobby, to those I know who are.

Anonymous BigGaySteve April 17, 2015 3:39 PM

"Read less, straight white men,” Isnt common core just trying to drag Asians and whites down to close the achievement gap?

“Pay attention to the world. (—Susan Sontag)” but not to the fact that the last king of Rwanda moved to Virginia to be on welfare & get better free healthcare than you could buy in his homeland.

This was fun: I kept an Amazon tab and a Wikipedia tab open while I went down the list of wise women pictured at the link. I searched each name on Amazon and Wikipedia as I went along.

Only half of them appear to have published anything. Of those, most have published 1-3 works of essays, poetry, or non-fiction, and their Amazon pages tout their literary awards and NEA grants.

Anybody can yap, or pose with a snarky, insulting message in marker.

Accomplish something, gals; earn your "place at the table", and then we'll talk. Maybe.

let them know that many CDL instruction schools are feeder programs for various companies. sometimes you can hire in, get trained, work for a year or two and the company will pay the training fee off.

they need to know that that first couple of years can be pretty brutal.

but it's still WAY less time and expense than going to college for four years and graduating with 100k in debt and no job.

if they have log book questions, forward them on to me. lot of places are going electronic logs anyways, which simplifies their lives but will also cut into hrs driving and therefore miles driven because you can't play rounding games.

As with the majority of jobs, women gravitate to those that are not that demanding and/or pay the least. Today at the library i spoke with a highly intelligent woman in say her mid-forties, childless and in an extremely low paying job. Extremely smart but oh so dumb. I felt a bit white-knightish for her, but the feeling passed quick as a bunny.
