The International Lord of Hate explains

Larry Correia was nominated in Best Novel for NEMESIS, but elected to decline the nomination:
The Hugo nominees have been announced. As you’ve probably already heard Sad Puppies suggested candidates showed up everywhere. We got nominations for dozens of talented, deserving people who would normally have been ignored or shunned.

I just want to make a comment about why I’m personally not on the list. I was contacted by the administrators on 3/20/15 and informed that Monster Hunter Nemesis was a finalist for best novel. I emailed them back the same day and turned it down. Whoever was next in line was then moved up to be a finalist in my place.

I refused the nomination for one simple reason. The Sad Puppies campaign isn’t about any one person. I felt that ultimately my presence would be a distraction from the overall mission.

The reason I refused my nomination is that as long as the guy who started Sad Puppies stayed in, the more our opposition would try to dismiss the whole campaign as being all about my ego, or some selfish personal desire to get award recognition. Nope. I really meant it when I said I don’t care about winning anything for myself. I hope this proves that once and for all.
The SJWs of science fiction have thrown all sorts of accusations at us, chief among them that we are self-serving individuals desperate for awards. The truth is, they would be considerably better off if we were. But we're not.

Excellent.

I'm a little bummed because I think Larry truly deserves an award for Nemesis. I get it, though. It's a brilliant tactical move to undermine the SJW arguments of selfishness. The Toad must be beside herself.

Winning nominations and turning them down = an epic troll job. Not sure it'll be effective on the loudest SJWs -- their rationalizing capabilities appear endless -- but perhaps it may work on those pink SFers that still have a few brain cells.

Characteristically noble of Larry. The big fella has a stout heart.

And it makes my decision easier - I honestly didn't know who to vote for if MH:N and Skin Game were both on the ballot for best novel.

Skin Game has to win it now, it's an excellent book, and Jim Butcher thoroughly deserves an award.

If number 5 is Ancillary Sword, this should be fun...

So this is what integrity looks like. They've never encountered it before, so it's no wonder their heads are spinning.

Look, Vox. Do you have any link explaining what Sad Puppies is? I googled it and I don't find any explanation. I stumbled upon a website that said that the "sad puppies" campaign was an effort to advance the works of Larry Correia and his protege Vox Day. LOL!

I don't understand this tactic, but that isn't new. Yes it answers an sjw concern...but who cares?

John C Wright has been nominated a record (if my memory serves) SIX times. Now I, for one, have to decide which of the novellas to vote for.

Blogger Daniel April 04, 2015 5:31 PM

This alone is worth it. And we have not even begun to fight. Fight on!

Precisely my thoughts. They'll either ignore his gracious move entirely, or invent something else of which to accuse him. What disappoints me specifically about Larry's decision here is that he appears to have let the disingenuous SJW narrative influence it.

Having said this, I respect his decision as his to make, and not as mine or yours. And I do have to say that I admire his forcefulness, tenacity and persistence over 3 years as the ELoL and puppies' leader, crowned today by this overwhelming success. That he chooses not to put himself on the pedestal in this situation almost crosses the t's and dots the i's.

Furthermore, we must not forget that we have just found out now, in hindsight. Larry had to make a snap decision on the spot, with no idea how it would affect the overall outcome.

Damn what a guy.

Blogger Daniel April 04, 2015 5:33 PM

Agreed.

Blogger Daniel April 04, 2015 5:40 PM

They will say "he robbed a slot and knew he would finish 6th out of 5 So he feigned nobility." But like any tactical choice, outcomes arent binary: there are always opportunities for countermeasures.

Last year they gloated (or consoled th the most about actual wins. But as long as other evil officers win a few categories I suppose it will be stepping upon their necks well enough.

Blogger Jack Aubrey April 04, 2015 6:08 PM

It's a class act by Larry, but I predict the SJW narrative will be that he didn't want to suffer another "humiliating defeat." They don't understand personal integrity.

Which novel would nemesis have bumped?

Anonymous Mike M. April 04, 2015 6:40 PM

Sad, for MH: Nemesis is a worthy book...but this is a smart strategic move.

Anonymous Alexander April 04, 2015 6:43 PM

This is where Sad Puppies and Rabid Puppies separate ways. Larry - no doubt, a classy move - but if the stated goal really is to force the SJWs to abandon the 'ATTENTION SEEKER!' disqualification, a pointless one.

Rabid Puppies understands that there is no sense whatsoever in trying to appeal to good faith and logical argument with the rabbits.

Blogger LP 999/Eliza April 04, 2015 6:47 PM

Bravo!

Character counted, revealed the obvious (SJW have trouble seeing the obvious) Larry gave a refined response setting a standard.

Blogger Salt April 04, 2015 7:02 PM

Yup. They'll use his refusing as attention getting, trying for the high ground. It is a classy move, but one that won't advance the SP initiative. Better he'd stayed in and won it. Let the work speak for itself.

Blogger Cataline Sergius April 04, 2015 7:11 PM

Larry's sharp.

Yes we could probably get him over the top and put the rocket in his hands but it does the cause more good if it goes to say, Jim Butcher whom everyone knows has deserved a Hugo for years.

It does us more good if Larry looks like the bigger man. Right now the Baroness Harkonnen, is stretching the bounds of reality to push the "No Award" vote.

It's obvious as it is hilarious.

For the moment however, I am treating myself to an evil maniacal laugh.

It’s worth noting that the Sad Puppies were not the first group to propose a slate of suggested nominations. The trend was started by former president of the Science Fiction Writers Guild of America, John Scalzi, who hosted an annual “award pimpage” post on his blog. British writer Charles Stross followed his example. But there was little semblance of a backlash to either Stross or Scalzi, who were both deeply embedded in the existing clique.

Blogger Danby April 04, 2015 7:35 PM

Here's the response they will give;
"Well, it's traditional to give away copies of the nominated books to Worldcon members. Larry wasn't willing to do that because he's all about the money, the Capitalist pig."

Anonymous Mr. A is Mr. A April 04, 2015 8:13 PM

The goal is to change the minds of others outside the cliquish SJW-dominated community; the usual suspects will likely not be moved -- and they really are irrelevant. Mr Correia's actions strengthen the argument that he has integrity and hews to higher principles -- that will be recognized by outsiders looking in to this event.

Blogger napari April 04, 2015 8:43 PM

If theres one thing you can count of with leftists AKA SJW's is that they are very, very good at destructive behavior.

Blogger frigger611 April 04, 2015 8:43 PM

The right move by Mr. Correia. There's no "strategy" here - it's just a man with class, character, and honor, doing what a man with class, character and honor does.
Worth far more than a pile of treasure, or some little statue anyway.
Does my heart good to see this, bravo, sir.

Probably, and I respect Larry for making it. But damn, MHN is a great book and deserved a Hugo.

Blogger Markku April 04, 2015 10:04 PM

I don't think this is really a "move". He just takes the option he feels good about, and that he can stand behind. I suspect that the reactions of SJW's were pretty low on the priority list as he was considering what to do.

Blogger Desiderius April 04, 2015 10:46 PM

"The truth is, they would be considerably better off if we were. But we're not."

Come now, Larry.

That is an understatement too gross even for the Toad of Tor.

Blogger richard mcenroe April 05, 2015 12:49 AM

Oh, come on! EVERYone who's ANYone just KNOWS Correia is doing this as a cunning ploy to win the sympathy vote NEXT year and score an even BIGGER win! Ask any SJW...

Anonymous bub April 05, 2015 7:56 AM

Good 4GW move.

Blogger Joshua Dyal April 06, 2015 3:38 PM

I don't think this is really a "move". He just takes the option he feels good about, and that he can stand behind. I suspect that the reactions of SJW's were pretty low on the priority list as he was considering what to do.

He's also said numerous times, and now he's demonstrating how much he believes it, that internet theater is not for the SJWs, who will never be convinced anyway. It's for everyone else observing.

Not that I believe it's a "move" either, but if it were, it's exactly the right one to reach his stated goals. Which isn't to win awards that he doesn't care about. It's to expose frauds and liars for what they are.
