A Rabid Puppy responds to David Gerrold
This is an open response to Mr Gerrold's heart felt facebook post. This post represents the Rabid Puppies official position on the matter. Word for Word. Mr Gerrold's words will be in italics. The Rabid Puppies response will be in bold. It is my sincerest hope that this dialog will provide some insight to those who seem so confused by the Rabbid Puppies actions.

I'm going to get very personal and candid here.

We don't care.

In 1995, I won a Hugo award for "The Martian Child." The story was about how much I loved my son. Because so much of the story came from him, the award was his to share, so he came up on stage with me to hold it proudly. That award meant a lot to me. It still does. It was a validation of that thing we say -- writing is easy, sit down at the keyboard and open a vein. That's where that story came from. And that's one of the reasons why I hold the Hugos in such high regard -- it was a joyous validation of what for me was not only an ambitious experiment, but also a personal breakthrough in my own storytelling. It went someplace I didn't know I could go. It went someplace I didn't know a science fiction story could go.

We don't care.

To me, the Hugo has always meant excellence, but since then I think it also had to represent the most ambitious efforts to stretch the genre in whatever direction an author wants to soar. This is a unique genre. It's the only genre that asks, "What does it mean to be a human being?" It's the only genre that reaches for the stars and asks, "What's next? What are the possibilities in front of us?" It's the only literary form that functions as the Research and Development Division of the human species. So the Hugo is special.

We don't care.
Yes, I would say that pretty well sums it all up.

This is an interesting exercise in rhetoric. Mr. Gerrold clearly wants us to be very impressed by his feelbads, and thereby convinced of the pure and utter evil of those who would cause such feelbads.

With all due respect, Mr. Gerrold, you're not exactly convincing anyone. We've read STARTREKSHIRTS. We've read "If a Dinosaur Had a Cookie, My Love". We've read "I am Chinese and I am Gay". We've read LOOK MA, I CAN DO WHAT DAVID SILVERBERG DID NEARLY 30 YEARS AGO. The only soaring that is taking place here is the Muse of Science Fiction leaping out the window in protest.

More interesting is Mr. Gerrold's threats of unpersoning and banishment from that fine community of SF fandom, which of course proves exactly what we've been saying from the start.

But the one thing that is growing more and more likely ... the architects of this squabble will have indelibly damaged themselves in the eyes of the SF community. There are invitations and acknowledgments that will never be offered -- not because it's a blacklist, but because nobody wants to hang out with assholes.

And if that's "unpersoning," then it's self-inflicted.

Whine all you want, Brad. It won't work. I learned it by the time I was five. I never got anything I wanted by whining -- so I stopped wasting energy and learned how to work for results the old-fashioned way.

This can't be repeated enough: we don't care.

We know the SJWs in science fiction are influential and have been actively acting as ideological gatekeepers for the last two decades. We know that there are invitations and acknowledgements that will never be offered - and we know it is a blacklist because people who are most certainly not assholes are treated as badly, if not worse, than those who are.

We know we will never belong to David Gerrold's little club. We know we never have.

We don't care.

We're not wasting energy. We're not whining. We are working for results in ways that Mr. Gerrold and his little tribe do not, and perhaps cannot, imagine. And I tend to expect they are going to like those results even less than they are enjoying the 2015 Hugo Awards.

I wonder if it's threats like Mr. Gerrold's that had the most influence on people dropping out, or if it was having all their "friends" and "fans" apologizing for being forced by Vox to vote No Award higher than their nominated work.

The long-term result will be that anyone too closely identified with the sad-rabids, anyone who benefited from this slate-mongering, anyone who did not publicly withdraw, will be indelibly tainted... Those who have been tainted will find that they have put unnecessary obstacles in their own paths. There are editors who will not want the stink that certain authors will be tracking with them. There are conventions that will not invite them to be on panels. There are awards they can never be considered for, lest others wonder if there was a political agenda at work.

More of Jonathan Haidt’s tribal moral communities at work.

The more biased they are, the more the are willing (or actually determined) to discriminate against non-members of the social justice warrior tribe, the less willing they are to admit that those discriminated against are being sanctioned, and the more they are likely to say that members of the sanctioned out-group are whining about nothing and / or bringing it on themselves.

This tripe is not worth consideration any more. Many years have gone by while the truth was obvious and there was no correction by the social justice warriors.

By "the SF community", he means a small minority of fat, obnoxious, ideologically stupefied control-freak "trufans" that in no way represents the majority of people who read SF/F. So... yeah, we don't care.

These pathetic attempts to shame and cajole the Sad Puppies into the warren are so funny. It doesn't matter what they say or don't say. We have the power to take back the Hugo, and we are exercising that power. We've always possessed that power, we just haven't used it until now. All their pleas and threats (heh) are just so much hot air.

Blogger Bogey April 21, 2015 6:16 AM

From Gerrold's Book Under the Eye of God:

A naked young man-no, only a boy-just a little too young and a little too pretty, came running out the door carrying his clothes in his hands. He looked terrified. He came flying, skidding, tripping down the stairs. He slipped and skidded the last few steps.
Sawyer's eyes widened in surprise at the sight of the voluptuous boy, but let him pass. "That's not Murdock." he decided. Apparently, this establishment kept a wider variety of erotic talents available for the entertainment of its guests than he had previously assumed.
"Hm," said Sawyer, looking after the boy's rosy cheeks. "I didn't think Murdock liked humans of any sex."

Murdock is a fat female alien with a taste for boys, or is that the author's taste for boys?

Star Trek was about social justice from day one -- the stories were about the human pursuit for a better world, a better way of being, the next step up the ladder of sentience. The stories weren't about who we were going to fight, but who we were going to make friends with. It wasn't about defining an enemy -- it was about creating a new partnership. That's why when Next Gen came along, we had a Klingon on the bridge.

I was a child when old Trek was on, so I didn't pick up any of that back then. ST:TNG was bare naked in its ideology and is why it was such a snore fest. When I asked all my trekkie friends their favorite arc, they all replied the Borg conflict.

Can you imagine what it would have been like if all of these... people, from Gerrold to John O'Neil would have had a single unified response along lines like this?
"Due to a push for new voters by a group of writers, there is an unexpected but perfectly fair set of nominations this year. Good show, welcome, we will read with interest and vote fairly and encourage everyone else to do the same. Next year we will make our own efforts to bring in more nomination votes for works such as the ones we preferred to see on the ballot."

You know, behaving like grown-ups. No rancor, no extreme butt-hurt, no media hit pieces. Therefore no proving of the Puppies' points. Therefore not much momentum possible for the Puppy supporters.

The source of the SJW terror:

Think of the internet as a giant petri dish with the perfect agar for cowards, wussies & pervs...

Think of bravery redefined as slinging more names & lies to achieve rhetorical victory over others. Power, previously unknown power - the bullied can now bully!

Think of the power now open to the backwater, fetid rabbit culture too often unable or unwilling to produce and achieve in a truly competitive marketplace. Immaturity can win here!

So they expanded into profiteering in the Agar of the Internet - allowed to be unaccountable, anonymous, safe in warrenspace - to claim profits & status by engineering a narrative & cramming it down others throats. Media complicity! There isn't any real backlash there is there - not in this new petri dish? SJW's grew into the dominate expansionary forces. They are not about social anything - except society THEIR way. Those who disagree must be offed, rhetorically, marginally or even permanently - all in the name of TOLERANCE! They are not about JUSTICE at all - unless the word means getting even for their perception of childish hurts & feelbad... and they are most certainly NOT WARRIORS. Holy cow, what a bunch of girlish maroons. Whining has been raised to high literary arts with that crowd.

Now, the real world is tired of the nonsense - so someone throws penicillin into the petri dish.

Gamergate is pencillin - Rabid Puppies is Vancomycin.

The screams of terror are due to the fact that they are now likely to be held accountable, publicly, for their actions & rhetoric. The days of easy power for rabbits & SJWs is over... that's the source of their terror. Accountability is a bitch.

The dialectic is coming... and it's playing rhetorical ball.

"The relationships with attention to science news were more interesting. Regardless of how liberal or conservative people identified as, if they paid more attention to this class of news, they tended to have slightly higher knowledge scores and perceive that climate change had the potential to cause greater degrees of harm. The increase in perceived harm with greater attention to science and environmental news was mainly due to conservatives—liberals might already be “maxed out”.
...
that yielded an even smaller effect. There, the difference between high and low attention to science news was just 0.2 out of 4 questions for conservatives. For liberals, the knowledge score actually went down (by a statistically insignificant amount) with higher attention to science news, unlike the increase seen in this study."

But... McCarthy WAS a Leftist. He was a Progressive from Wisconsin, as were many Republicans from that socialist-leaning state.

McCarthy was best buddies with Joseph P. Kennedy. He was allied with JFK. He originally supported the socialism of the New Deal.

A long time ago ... in a gallaxy far, far away... it was possible to be Leftist AND an anti-communist (Father Charles Coughlin, Huey Long, etc.). Such no longer exists.

The communists became the New Left which became the Democratic Party and our current Powers-that-Be. They defeated the conservatives so bad in the Culture War, now they rewrite history. Joseph McCarthy was guilty of both exposing commies AND homos, thus he is alinged with Evil and thus a conservative (because conservatives are Evil.)

TOS had its clangers, but overall it was a good show and - here's the important thing - generally didn't let whatever message Roddenberry wanted to send get in the way of telling a good story. Of course, in the 60's, network execs expected a good story (or at least a semblance of one).

Oh man, the stupid is strong in this one...

The easiest mistake to make when trying to understand fascists is to think that they are best described in terms of a philosophy - as though fascism is a set of tenets and beliefs.
....
No, the useful way to understand fascism, at least for the purposes of Beale, is as an aesthetic - as a particular mix of fetishes and paranoias...

When I was in the navy 1960-64, we had numerous races in just about every position so the ones on Star Trek were not really 'tokens' but representatives of a real US Navy. And sometimes they were in charge. We still got the job done, sometimes better than some of the white officers I was stuck with.

No, Heinlein was not a SJW either. An SJW is someone with a grievance and message. Heinlein just used characters and put them in places where they could add to the story. There were female engineers, scientists, etc. for probably years, Curie, comes to mind. We just didn't think that 'being female was that big a deal like they do. The SJW real message is read in Gerrold's message, whining about something that doesn't exist in the real world. No one is negating his position of Guest of Honor, he still gets all the accolades that any GOH would have. He just doesn't get to give the Hugo to his best buds, that's all.

I started reading it, and I notice that he seems to think he can get away with sleight of hand if he just buries his falsehoods in paragraphs and paragraphs of text...

What is striking about this exchange is the way in which Beale’s language elides something. Look at the tension between his phrases: “science and history and logic exist regardless of whether we are happy about them or not” and “historical explanations are, for the most part, scientific fairy tales, literal science fiction.” These two positions seem to tear at each other.

No they don't. Because history is the catalog events which happened in the past, while historical explanations are theories as to why and how those events happened. They are two very different things.

And if it isn't complete, there's a "top 7 myths about gays and lesbians" which should immediately set off flags to anyone knowledgeable in the subject as, really, gays and lesbians are so different that you can't really lump them together.

From the leftists perspective, actual, genuine McCarthyism is the gift that keeps on giving. McCarthy himself focused on finding actual Soviet spies working for the federal government, but the leftists have whipped up a hysteria about McCarthyism that serves to paint any of them that they desire as courageous victims--rather than as the cowardly traitors that they actually are.

We get it. Vox is a fascist (we've actually gone through Mussolini's manifesto and the National Socialist's before and are quite certain we are not fascists, but regardless) and we are all evil evil fascists by association.

Vox recognizes that good and evil don't perfectly correlate with rational and irrational. This means he wants to kill little Islamic girls who go to school.

Vox said something that is 'technically historically accurate' but is still feelbad and hurts those that are fully-savage and proud of it, so he's even more bad than he was before you read this paragraph. 4. Children raised by same-sex unions are affected negatively by their experience.- That's nothing compared to when they admit it to the media and SJWs attack them.
5. Lesbians have lots of sex- Lesbian death bed, they only get screwed by the "you can love women or understand them" observation
6. Gays are attracted to everybody of the same sex.- They want what John Scalzi says he is, not what he is.
7. One lesbian in the relationship has to be "the man".- They can always call a friend to deal with a spider.

Basically it calls right back to John C. Wright's essay on how the left calls anything it doesn't like fascism.

That bit at the beginning where he explains, "This essay is only intended to preach to my choir, I know that any intelligent, logical person who reads it will just laugh at me," is pretty funny too.

Anonymous Quartermaster April 21, 2015 7:44 PM

"It's also obvious by the fact that while you criticize its arguments, you can't actually make one mention of why they deserve criticism."

@The Medium

Anyone of average intelligence can see what Sandfifer is doing, and he doesn't even do it particularly well. Much of it is simply poisoning the well, something SJWs love doing. It's why he includes the single sentence declaration,

"Theodore Beale is a neo-fascist."

Standard SJW tactic. It's a two-fer, deflects and poisons the well. It's also ad hominem, but, hey, "by any means necessary," right?

I have had many reasons to refuse any deference to PhDs in fuzzy fields like English, and most of those reasons are on parade in Sandfifers manure. If that piece of trash is an epic smackdown to you, you have no standard on which judge anything of the sort. Sandfifer doesn't have the tools to pull anything like that off, and that piece pretty much screams the lack of such an ability.

To do anything like you claim he did, he would first have to get the story straight. He fails epically on that point alone. It's just another juvenile attempt to slash at his intellectual betters and as such generally isn't worth the time of day.

Incidentally, your handle is poorly chosen. "The Lesser" would fit far better.

I reflexively posted over there. Normally, I wouldn't, but saying that Fascism is not a set of political beliefs, but an "aesthetic," made my brain cramp.

Why are Leftists like Roddenberry always exploiting Hotties Of Color?

Roddenberry was an equal opportunity exploiter of hotties. He certainly never let skin color (or lack of it) dissuade him from A Piece of the Action.

Hugo Gernsback was a very bad man and very optimistic about science so the SPs and RPs are evil or something, and also fundamentally flawed gamergaters or something.

Vox is openly racialist but I dunno what it means.

@Robot
Good article. he's a leftist, but not a SJW. I especially like this bit.
"Just a word of warning: if you are relying on SJWs to defend issues that actually matter – anti-racialism, women’s emancipation, free speech, the defense of civilization – you are relying on people who cannot even rig an award competently."

It's almost like they say the opposite of what they mean. Next thing you know they'll be saying war is peace, freedom is slavery, etc.

@ Shibes Meadow

Yours is a work of cruelty art. I am thunderstruck with admiration. I think I like your takeoff of the dino story better than mine.

"If any one wants to witness the most complete and epic slap down of Vox Day and John Wright, as well as get a glimpse of the kind prose these two only wish the could write, then head over to philipsandifer.com.

Devastating!"

Well, with all due respect, he does not say anything about me at all. I am not sure how that counts as a take down, epic or otherwise.

It seems a stream of consciousness sort of rambling blither. Can you explain, for example, why he says that if you could get me drunk, I would admit that my point about transhumanism (namely, that it can amplify but not cure the human condition) proves that I think black people are ugly?

I literally cannot even imagine the intermediate steps by which a mind goes from the one proposition to the conclusion.

Is there even a scintilla of evidence that I have ever expressed even the slightest disrespect to any minority, or that I have even noticed such things? Of course not. So how is one incoherent statement followed by another ending with a meaningless accusation some sort of well worded criticism of me or my work? It is not. It is merely the meanderings of a mind disordered by pride and envy, addicted to dishonesty.

Your prayers, rather than your admiration, should go toward this poor soul.

"If you look at a lot of literary fiction, I think you can argue, by this definition of speculative fiction, all post modernism is science fiction." - Phillip Sandifer on the Pex Lives: A Doctor Who Podcast, episode title Shabcast 3 - This Machine Kills Fascists

Sandifer has adopted post modern cognition, not just post modern grooming techniques. His mind has been trained to eat itself so that it can "survive" in isolation. Both masochist and sadist, the cannibal self-flaggelation into ever stranger incantations has but one purpose: To resonate with the wailing dark beyond the stars and bring the end.

Ah, now I understand. Sandifer is a Hellboy larper.
