Awesome, the gift that keeps on giving.

Incidentally, why do they hate Butcher? The Dresden books may not have transgendered lesbian wereseals, but they do have some Pink elements like Harry's pedestalization of women. They're hardly right-wing or overly Blue. Is it just simple envy, that he's such a better writer than them, and on a series he started as kind of a joke?

If I knew nothing else about this situation, that one fact, that the Dresden books have never been up before, would be enough to tell me there's something fishy going on.

Blogger FALPhil April 08, 2015 9:31 AM

Anonymous hygate April 08, 2015 9:47 AM

Incidentally, why do they hate Butcher?

My guess is that it is because he has positive, heroic Christian characters. Also, he has a little fun making fun of atheists.

One character is given a sword by an archangel and the sword, meant for fighting the enemies of God, has a nail from the True Cross incorporated into it. And that Character has fought actual fallen angels. Nevertheless, that character insists he is an atheist.

Cail,

They hate Butcher because:
1. He sees nothing wrong with referencing pop culture and not being ironic about it.

2. He recognizes his primary role is to entertain his audience with a good story.

3. He has made gobs more money than the people who insist that the primary role is to educate the reader on rightthink.

My assumption is that he pushes left but he is anchored by a firm belief in the right to write as he wants, and understands the client-customer relationship.

Anonymous Steve April 08, 2015 11:05 AM

why do they hate Butcher?

The reasons above are plausible. But my guess is that he simply never bothered sucking up to them.

Compare and contrast with the career of John Scalzi. Scalzi has mated his fair-to-middling talent as a writer to his exceptional ability as a social climber / everybody's friend.

I've never heard of Jim Butcher getting involved in cliques. The guy seems to just love writing, and he's talented enough to maintain consistently high standards.

It's incredible that the Dresden Files are on book 15 now, and they're still awesome. Old Man's War started going badly wrong in Book 3. Better authors than Scalzi tend to either run out of steam by the end of a trilogy, or bring in co-authors to keep things fresh.

Butcher is consistently entertaining and popular. That in itself would provoke a lot of jealousy from the in-crowd, most of whom are just playing at being novelists.

Anonymous Ain April 08, 2015 11:06 AM

Yes, EW and/or similar media outlets that are owned by SJW would have been a perfect addition to this piece, however, it might also have had it taken down from YouTube much sooner.

The Hitler parodies are classic. I hope the actor who did the part of Hitler had finally learned to accept these parodies, he was still coming to terms with it in the last interview I saw.

Well done! no obvious grammar mistakes, although the Toad of Tor will probably be too obscure for most people, I'm sure it will infuriate and humiliate her.

Making the awards the only source of validation for their self-perceived identity as SF/F writers since they don't have actual sales.

No wonder they are so upset. Authors with actual sales also getting the awards the SJWs covet so.

Anonymous Salt April 08, 2015 11:30 AM

But the last line is disturbing "No award everthing". Is that going to happen?

I see two possible outcomes. Either play well for #SadPuppies.

The SJWs come out in droves to support the Noah Ward initiative. We may see a lot of calling for that in social media. Stick it to the puppies. "If it's not our award it's no ones' award!" How many SJWs are there? Watch the Hugo membership rolls.

Then there is a group which fully understands what it's all about, and were blamed for the puppies. They had nothing to do with it. But as sticking it to SocJus is so delicious, watch out for the #Gamergate.

If No Award beats out, what the puppies are about wins. On the other hand, the numbers of No Award will show what they are about and deserving authors still win. Again, puppies for the win.

There is no downside to being on the right side of the fence.

Blogger Longstreet April 08, 2015 11:33 AM

Blogger Joshua Dyal April 08, 2015 11:44 AM

But the last line is disturbing "No award everthing". Is that going to happen?

That wasn't projection, that's what many are openly calling for. I doubt that they have the numbers to pull it off. But as mentioned above; it's a Xanatos Gambit already, even if they don't realize it. If No Award wins, then the short-sighted SJWs have exposed their hypocrisy openly, and they've destroyed their ability to ever do that again. They fire their best weapon at the wrong target and leave themselves defenseless forever more, at least on this battlefield. And if they can't do it, then they're also exposed as lacking the power and clout that they think they have, and the Hugos are rehabilitated; or at least rehabilitation has credibly started.

They don't know it, but no matter what they do at this point, they can't win.

Anonymous Ohboy April 08, 2015 12:00 PM

Been reading this blog for a year now and have been following this Hugo awards kerfuffle since then. I haven't always understood it as I'm sort of on the outside looking in (though I read some SF/F) and I haven't been into knowing all the machinations and characters involved the way that an insider of the SF/F community would. This video changes a lot of that. It makes it clear as (Vox) Day.

Anonymous Steve April 08, 2015 12:07 PM

Hygate - Well, you can see how Jim Butcher's mainstream success might rankle someone like Saladin Ahmed.

Ahmed is a 39 year old man with university degrees galore, and recently garnered Hugo and Nebula nominations. Yet he has resorted to begging for money on the internet, "to assist with childcare":

http://www.saladinahmed.com/wordpress/please-wont-you-be-my-patron/

Now, maybe I'm doing a disservice to Ahmed and maybe he doesn't resent the success of the Butchers and Correias of this world.

But I'd bet money that between him, K. Tempest "Never Published A Novel" Bradford, N.K. "Who?" Jameson, Big Fat Seanan "Eww! White Dudes!" McGuire, and Damien "The Anti-Author" Walters, there's a fair amount of old-fashioned jealousy for people who make a good living out of writing while the righteous and socially just struggle to pay bills.

John C. Wright's books are also published by Tor. That hasn't prevented Senior Tor Editors from declaring their intention to No Award authors and books published by their own company.

Anonymous That Would Be Telling April 08, 2015 1:34 PM

Joshua Dyal: After doing a bit of research, it looks like an honest mistake.

Here's the edit that added a publisher (Tor), it was near the end of an edit war about having its own page, half a year before it was officially published. Looking at the author, who's only edit to the page was that, indicates no axe to grind, he's just a fan of the series among many other interests.

But perhaps more than bizarre, it might indicate how big Tor's reputation is, deserved or not.

Anonymous That Would Be Telling April 08, 2015 1:45 PM

Vox: Are any of Wright's future books going to be published by the current Tor?

Is that a stupid question?

My point was more about another possible reason why Butcher hasn't gotten any love from the CHORFs to date, plus the delightful coincidence I found while confirming his publisher (ultimately Penguin, in one form or another). But we can imagine the discussions, public and private, if Tor had any skin in Skin Game....

Isn't it ridiculous that accusations of "ageism" by the likes of Godfrey Elfwick is the caliber of the opposition here? Look at his description: Demisexual genderqueer pale person. Literal good guy. Itinerant jongleur. Pronouns are Xir, Xirs Xirself. Filters life through the lens of minority issues.

And yet, he manages to get the discussion hijacked into something totally inane. I've sure seen in the last few years the danger of letting them frame debate.

Semi-related: movie fans, go see The Kingsmen - it is a Bond-style movie with the criminal mastermind played by a lisping Samuel L. Jackson who kidnaps celebrities and world leaders in his plot to slaughter the planet in order to prevent global warming. Kickass warrior chick is also a double amputee with sword feet and an unpleasant, uncool personality. Anti-SJW all the way through. The good guy girl spy is really fun, afraid of heights and her key skills involve balloon rides.

From Philip Sandifer....

Obviously progressive voices within the sci-fi/fantasy community have to fight, and fight hard to reclaim fandom from the neofascist entryist movement that has just stolen it. But until that fight is won, it is also the moral duty of progressive voices to form a blocking majority, and to loudly admit that fandom as it stands is broken, and that any work proclaimed to be the best of the year by a fandom this broken is demeaned by the association.

Left wing bigot or average clown? You decide

Anonymous Scintan April 08, 2015 5:56 PM

And here's Arthur Chu:

I will point out that if you look at the Hugo Awards’ slate for this year you’ll see a record-breaking six nominations for John C. Wright, including three out of five of the best novella nominations being stories written by Wright.

Wright, a man so essential to the state of science fiction in 2015 that he doesn’t have a single bestseller, he’s signed with a micro-publisher based in Finland with a total of eight authors on its roster, and I’m the only person I know in real life who’s heard of him. Mainly because I hate-follow his incredible rants about how everything from the Syfy Network to “The Legend of Korra” is too gay for him to tolerate.

I’m not saying that a version of the Hugo Awards that regularly gives high honors to marginal writers mainly known as right-wing cranks will ruin literary science fiction as a field. I am saying that the unfinished stump of the Washington Monument was an embarrassing symbol of failure that, for decades, made our nation a laughingstock, and that that’s what tends to happen when you have a “democratic process” that’s easily hijacked by deranged reactionary zealots.

These people are insane

Blogger Johan April 08, 2015 6:08 PM

Has there been any thought to starting a Blue SF award? I'm sure that Baen and Castalia could band together and support them. You could call them the Card Awards (after Orson Scott Card) or the Heinlein Awards. I'm sure either one of those would drive the SJWs crazy.
