In answer to a question at File 770:
I suspect the Rabids aren’t fans of SF so much as they are “members of the cult of Vox Day.” Partly, this is the only thing that truly seems to explain the works on the slate — the ones that aren’t published by Beale’s own press anyway — the point isn’t that they are any particular thing, the point is that he chose them, and there they are.

I don’t know what that implies for the future. Beale himself obviously believes in nursing a grudge to the end of time, so HE’S not going anywhere. But how many minions does he actually have? What’s their staying power? Are they really going to stay interested enough to do this again next year?
There are exactly 367 Vile Faceless Minions, as it happens, in addition to an unknown quantity of Rabid Puppies, Dread Ilk, and Ilk.

As to what their staying power is, and if they are really going to stay interested enough to do this again next year, I have ordered Malwyn and her colleagues to unmuzzle them and thereby permit them to speak for themselves, if they so wish.

I am kind.

This is just so Special...really. He don't know the Ilk all though he seems to have accurately depicted The Evil Lord of Darkness' staying power.

I just love this stuff....

Repeating myself:

I will remind the Vile, Faceless Minions that we are both Vile and Faceless and therefore thoughtless in all actions. A true VFM will vote exactly as the SJW fears: in mindless marching lockstep with the Dark Lord's gentle suggestions.

Now it may be the waspling he - in his infinite wisdom and/or malice - has had attached to my amygdala, or the antitronic clamps that have been applied to the more sensitive connective tissues of my tongue; it may be the liver-shattering colony of Gasps that has been grafted to the currents of my interstitial fluids; I pray it is not the psychic anal leeches; but the insight I have gained from some or all of them is this: not only does a VFM - do or die - vote in strict suggested order, but he does it without consideration - in fact, his votes are not his own.

As my thoughts have been long abandoned to the void, I - of course - did not write even this!

They are the simple observations of the damp necrotic atmosphericon that gained sentience during my last summoning and of whom I am merely its unwilling and quite tormented host.

Vote Rabid Puppy, for the love of country, the love of mankind, and the love all that is right and salutatory.

Or die.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Justice began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt SJW's finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Vile Faceless Minions with terror and slaughter return!

Idiocy like the one quoted in the OP is the kind of thing that makes it highly likely I will keep supporting things like RP. They keep stirring the wasp nest and wonder why they get the reaction they get.

Anonymous Ridip May 31, 2015 12:31 PM

Here's the thing. I for one am very patient and long suffering. I will give you more than one chance to back down from a fight and if you are foolish enough to proceed, I will end it.

Translation: you got my attention by repeatedly insulting and lying about all of us. You crapped all over a thing that I love (SciFi) and called it worthless. In its place you set up a rocket-shaped statue of a syphilis-addled whore's corpse.

One of two things will happen. The Hugos will once again become an award for truly outstanding and inspirational fiction or we will return, burn it down, grind it to powder, and salt the earth where it stood. Sodom will be no more. We will shake the dust off of our feet and move on to the next target in this war.

There are also those Hooded Ones who glide through the darkness beyond the reddish glow of the volcanoes. They who are sometimes known to inhabit the good citizens of the pyramidal though somewhat scuffed SJW Warren for their own purposes, of cruelty or mere curiosity, and make them tell their secrets of their Fo-Rums or say aloud to their warrenmates what must not be thought. Long has the Warren elided its foreseen fate. It's unfortunate that the Earthcurrent was turned off a couple of years ago due to nonpayment.

Bz himself is, of course, more of a sardonic abhuman.

No cult, at least not one of Vox Day. Personally, it's not about SF (SF being one facet). It is about a cult, though. The Cult of Social Justice; a pox on humanity.

What's our staying power? The answer to people who like to read and write is simple -

Show, don't tell.

Blogger Kull May 31, 2015 1:24 PM

Vox is in it for the long haul because he has to be. These people will not shut up about him. The level of obsession is creepy. If Vox packed it up today and swore off the internet they would still be talking about him for the next 10 years. They need him. Vox is Emmanuel Goldstein. Not in the truest sense (trotsky proxy (ha!)), but as the focal point for their hate. They could never give him up. Not even if he recanted his heresy and posed in drag for a whole calendar of Scalzi spreads for the Anti-Sex league.

If there is one thing I have learned from the Hugo battle is that the SFF establishment is filled with lying, loopy assholes. They are not rational people trading in rational ideas. Every time they tell me I am a scared white guy trying to keep minorities out my resolves strengthens. I am so sick of that line. Only people who don't believe in merit could project that shit. If I fail as a writer it is because I haven't worked hard enough, end of story. They may have taken over the establishment but with the rise of self publishing I don't need them anyway. So take that tired shit and peddle it somewhere else.

40 bucks is a bargain for a chance to stand up to these people. I am in it for as long as it takes.

Anyone have any predictions as to the allegiances of the massive supporting membership numbers? Are they all on Kowal's Free Memberships (But Its a Neutral Thing I Swear) Bus? Part of me hopes they are. I think one of the SJW luminaries on 770 made a remark about VD buying memberships. That seems like a tell, classic projection.

"Partly, this is the only thing that truly seems to explain the works on the slate"

I love how a work's intrinsic quality doesn't even enter into the critic's mind. He can't explain why Vox would support a work. Ah, clearly it must be an arbitrary choice that Vox makes just to show off his Sartrean will to do otherwise. "the point is that he chose them, and there they are." That's the only possible explanation for this person. It couldn't be because (gasp) some works are intrinsically better than others regardless of the author's politics/color/race/creed. What a pitiable person, unable to conceive of such a thing.

Just to clarify, this is incorrect. 2015 membership only allows you to nominate in 2016. To vote you have to be a member of the specific convention, but membership also gives you nominating rights for the next one.

Stood on a field of Vampire LARPers all dressed in black, except for me, and realized i was the scariest person there.

Unlike Vox, I believe American can be saved. It just requires the complete and utter destruction of the National Left. I stood outside Huntsville and saw it glow, and thought the Commies might have nuked my home city. I watched the Berlin Wall fall.

I am kind.

You are most kind, Dread Liege.

I, however, am not.

The questions at File 770 come from Julie McGalliard, author of a pink YA urban fantasy novel about werewolves. It's titled "Waking Up Naked In Strange Places", which is a title I like. When I was an alcoholic, I too used to wake up in strange places with no recollection of the night before.

I think most of us boozehounds and reformed boozehounds can sympathise with the situation of the chap from An American Werewolf In London, when he finds himself damp, bollock-naked and confused at London Zoo.

You can tell awesome stories about lycanthropy. Larry Correia did it with Earl Harbinger. Warren Zevon did it with Lon Chaney Jr. walking with the Queen. Unfortunately Julie's book seems to be more about Christian-bashing meets Thelma and Louise, but with more body hair. Which is a shame, but pinks gonna pink.

I'll answer Julie's question, but before I get to that, in the immortal words of Otto Mann, Have you always been a chick? I mean, I don't want to offend you, but, you were born a man, weren't you?

Because, come on. Even her Twitter pal Brianna Wu doesn't have the cast-iron jawline of a Buzz Lightyear and the brow ridge of an Australopithecine. Either Julie used to be Julian, or she's been taking the same supplements they used to give hairy-arsed female shot-putters in East Germany.

Hands like shovels, too.

Anyway, Julie/Julian...

What’s their staying power?

Allow me to explain it in terms you might understand.

We have more staying power than Big Seanan McGuire staking out an all-you-can-eat buffet.

More patience than the ancient ones lurking in the cold, dark netherplaces between the stars. Waiting... waiting... infinitely patient and infinitely rabid.

Most people, Julie, fear the cenobytes, the Watchers in the Woods, and the things that see you from the other side of a mirror.

But those creatures fear us, the Evil Legion of Evil.

Run.

I suspect the Rabids aren’t fans of SF so much as they are “members of the cult of Vox Day.”

This betrays the author's ignorance of both the conflict and his or her adversaries. What's happening within science fiction is a single aspect of a larger culture war that one side is only just starting to show up for. Whether Rabids are true SF fans is immaterial. What's significant is that a number of parties have shown up so substantial in number and influence that the other side feels compelled to identify their presence as the work of witchcraft.

From what I've gathered observing the rabbits, the barriers to entry for cult membership are similarly handicapped:

Do you believe Beale is Hitler/a Nazi?

Do you believe Beale is a white supremacist?

Do you believe all of Beale's positions are indefensible?

Do you believe Beale is morally repugnant?

Are you triggered or otherwise distressed when you read Beale's blogs?

Do you believe Beale is hiding something?

If you answered "no" to any of these questions, you are a member of the Cult of Day.

But how many minions does he actually have? What’s their staying power? Are they really going to stay interested enough to do this again next year?

The staying power of the relevant parties is exactly one unit greater than their opposition's.

Run. Run! We are watching. Analyzing your patterns. Waiting for the chains to be released again.

Blogger Doom May 31, 2015 4:14 PM

Muzzles? Noice! I just don't want minions, but if I did... just thinking out loud.

Not really ilk, dread or not. Not a Voxbot or other tool. Devil's advocate, 1st order, 7th rank (though there is some quibbling about actual rank), often enough, but only to the deserving. In any case, I am hoping to figure out how to "join" in the festivities next year, and if so, from then on. Just because I do my other duty, doesn't mean I always truly disagree. Don't count on either, either way, mind you. Though, in this case, I haven't been smacking on puppies of either sort. Can't find a bone to steal in their midst.

No promises. I'm a lazy no-account, and joining looks complicated... at least while digging out of my coffin. But the intent is there. My only question is... why unmuzzle. That's not so much a thing to do to minions, but people in general, minions or not. More muzzles please! Never mind. I'm not a super cosmic intelligence. Just a myth with some plans.

Anonymous Trimegistus May 31, 2015 4:27 PM

There's another aspect of their endless projection which bears noting, because it's very important:

They think we are unhappy.

Look at all their attempts at shaming and othering; they constantly call us bitter, lonely, hateful, solitary, basement-dwelling, et cetera. One wonders why? After all, those are pitiable traits worthy of compassion and sympathy. True villains would be depicted as arrogant in their power, callous and cruel, dangerous, sadistically tormenting their victims and laughing in malice. They could even find plenty of evidence to support that picture, right here in these comments.

But they don't do that. Because, inevitably, they are projecting. They are the unhappy ones. They are the lonely ones, who only socialize at conventions and are cut off from the people they live among. They are the unattractive and unhealthy ones. They are the ones who are failures at life, envious and embittered.

Be of good cheer! You are young, you are strong, you are successful! That is why they hate you. This is not a desperate rearguard fight of an embattled few. Our numbers grow every day as more of their insane hate seeps out.

They are stopping their ears and shrieking to drown out the horns and the pounding of hooves.

Blogger Danby May 31, 2015 4:39 PM

For some other late Boomers:

In the footsteps of Napoleon the shadow figures
Stagger through the winter falling back before the gates of Moscow
Standing in the wings like an avenger

And far away behind their lines the partisans are stirring in the forest
Coming unexpectedly upon their outposts, growing like a promise
You'll never know, you'll never know
Which way to turn, which way to look, you'll never see us
As we're stealing through the blackness of the night
You'll never know, you'll never hear us
And the evening sings in a voice of amber, the dawn is surely coming

The morning road leads to Stalingrad, and the sky is softly humming
Two broken Tigers on fire in the night flicker
Their souls to the wind, we wait in the lines for the final
Approach to begin, it's been almost four years that
I've carried a gun at home it'll almost be spring

The flames of the Tigers are lighting the road to Berlin

And not every one who relishes a fight here, now, on this ground, against this foe, wants to be a minion. The partisans are stirring in the forest.

Hello SJW's. I am a brony VFM, and Rainbow Dash is my favorite pony.

Please take me in with you. I am tired, hungry, cold and scared.

I am so frightened.

Won't you bring me inside so I can warm my numb hands by your fireplace?

Please?

Let us sleep comfortably in your bed, and I will awaken happily.

Thank you.

Started reading SF back in the 70s when I was still in grade school. The idea that I am not a real fan is risible. As for my staying power, these people have pissed me off. I am not going anywhere.

Ditto. I've been a fan since before a lot of the whiny SJW crew were even born. They are the newcomers and transient interlopers, not me. They came and shit all over something I have loved for a long, long time. Do they really think I'm going to forget that next year, or in ten years, or.... EVER?

And oh by the way, I bet a lot of us haven't even signed up for numbers yet, so "367" is a very, very conservative estimate.

The cult of vox day has always existed and will always exist in the wild places. Waiting for the stars to be in the correct place so their sable lord would arise and unleash his horror upon the earth. To lead them in an ecstasy of destruction upon the warrens of the sjws. And now that time has come and the Dread Lord has arisen from his slumber of eons. Rejoice o minions for we shall glimpse the doom that falls upon all who oppose our lord in his terrible and unbending will.

I can also say that one dimension the SJW rabbits haven't appreciated is the fact that the Ilk, the VFM, Rabid Puppies have a large numbers of actual warriors, those who have actually taken human life. For those, the bleatings of rabbits such as these are like blood in the water to a great white shark.

What these spineless warblers don't understand, is that for everyvsingle faceless minion, there are probably three dread Ilk. And an unknown number of faced non-minions, who nevertheless will readily go to war against everything SJW in sight. Some, will bring their own armies.

I started reading SF back in the '70s, plowing through the anthologies on the shelves in the public library. I read Isaac Asimov's for years. Then I dropped off, preferring to read non-fic, history, crime, noir, Westerns, Viking sagas, old pulps, etc.

Back in '06 I started checking out some modern SF magazines. Mostly I found that the stuff that didn't bore me, was just plain offensive. But I had some dependable go-to writers who had extensive back-lists.

As a Vile Faceless Minion I am bound on pain of being devoured by hellhounds to vote as the Dread Lord bids. Thing is, I actually pretty much agree with his taste in SF. I could sort of quibble over Plural of Helens of Troy v Big Boys don't Cry, but truth is I LIKED them. Wright is an amazing writer, and Kratman pulled out some excellence in Big Boys. By and large, the SP/RP recommendations have proved very good to superb, hardly laughably bad. They look like contenders to me.

As to getting crated up & sent to the pound, go ahead and try it lady. I've got a few friends on the opposite side, but they're just folks. As for the big shots, they don't know me, they never did anything for me, and I'm not asking for anything. I don't care. I'm not going to start because Mercedes Lackey threatened me.

I am one of the Unnumbered Ones. I hear He Whose Name May Not Be Spoken and I obey.

The Dark Lord has no need of a name. HE just IS.
There is The Dark Lord [Vox Day if you must know]
There are the Minions [note that their registered number is about the count of a Roman Cohort, understrength, that has had several tough battles]
There are the Dread Ilk [these are the ones like Nate that are near to the Dark One]
There are the Ilk [those of the footsoldiers; the bulk of the Legion]
There are the Near ILK [they are faithful and fruitful, and have the staying power and are working toward greater things]
The are the unwashed; the un-named; the many legions of unknown that are there for the support and the fun. These could be labeled as lurkers or whatever or auxiliaries.

Now: ask yourself this, sjw scum, what is beyond the Dark Lord? What pulls his chain? THATS what you must fear.

You, McJulie. You are my staying power. You and your kind give me the motivation, the energy, and the raw fury to continue my quest. Your holier-than-thou attitudes and constant degradation of everything you infect fuels my engine for crusade.

Ok. You Nefarious Bastards had your chance. No one stepped up, so here goes:

KING HENRY V

What's he that wishes so?
My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin:
If we are mark'd to die, we are enow
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honour.
God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.
By Jove, I am not covetous for gold,
Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost;
It yearns me not if men my garments wear;
Such outward things dwell not in my desires:
But if it be a sin to covet honour,
I am the most offending soul alive.
No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England:
God's peace! I would not lose so great an honour
As one man more, methinks, would share from me
For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made
And crowns for convoy put into his purse:
We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is called the feast of Crispian:
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian:'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispin's day.'
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day: then shall our names.
Familiar in his mouth as household words
Harry the king, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester,
Be in their flowing cups freshly remember'd.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

This ilk remembers digging through cardboard boxes full of Ace Double novels in the attic, picking the ones with most appealing covers, and devouring them from the age of 10 on. (Dad worked in NYC and lived on the Island in the 60's; he'd read one a day going back and forth on the railway). There were a lot of them stashed up in the attic. A veritable, albeit sometimes moldy, treasure trove.

Of course - the majors, such as Heinlein (first edition of his juveniles, in fact) along with tomes by Asimov, Tolkien, Herbert, Zelazny, were to be found on the book shelves on the first and second floor of our New England colonial.

I read Miller's "A Canticle for Leibowitz" in, I think, 8th grade.

This ilk remembers summers in Maine, we'd hit the used book store run by the local library - Gormenghast, The Dying Earth, Burroughs and Carter Buroughs knock offs, all on offer summer after summer.

God help me,boys, I read 9 out of 10 books of Lron's "Invader's Plan" decology. Don't get me started on "The Wheel of Time." Stop pulling yer braid, Nynaeve. Friends don't let friends read "The Wheel of Time".

Dad had a subscription to Asimovs and F&SF before dinosaur pornography was the novella de jour.

Also - I am pretty sure that I might still owe the science fiction book club some money.

You get the picture.

Sorry to disappoint. I've been a rabid SF fan since the age of about 9 (1974), when I stumbled across Asimov's "The Stars, Like Dust", and "David Starr, Space Ranger". Consider that Asimov was a complete and total leftist, and yet these books were not SJW books, and I still love the stories. That was also the year I came across "The Hobbit" and was set up for a life of disappointment when I realized how little fantasy could live up to that standard. I fared better with sci-fi, but pretty much gave up following the genre in the 90s, as it degenerated into navel-gazing psychosis or trite moralizing with Hollywood-quality drama.

Rabid puppies is simply a lark, although it has given me hope that SF can be redeemed.

Just for the record, I was reading SF voraciously in Jr. High in 1972. That and "Strategy & Tactics" magazine, and my Dad's "Pictorial History of the Second World War" formed a very specific view of the world. One that assumes that peace is not the natural state of the world. I discovered fandom in 1977. And I figure that I'm entitled to a vote in the SF world as much as any consumer of the genre. I will continue regardless of what VD does.

I have been warning friends and family about the dangers of political correctness for longer than I can remember. It's only gotten worse. The first time someone explained "trigger warnings" to me, I refused to believe they were serious.

#Gamergate seems like a an achievement to me; one that I would like to see repeated. We all need to realize that freedom implies individualism, and demands room for disagreement. Frankly, a bunch of people here are disagreeable zealots. But I suspect they would make good neighbors.

Blogger automatthew June 01, 2015 1:50 AM

I'm inducting my eldest into real SF. It's harder than it should be, because of the perverse need felt by otherwise good men to sex up their novels.

Here's what I've offered the boy so far:

* Heinlein: Double Star. [his absolute best work]
* Heinlein: Farmer in the Sky.
* Heinlein: Have Spacesuit, Will Travel.
* van Vogt: Voyage of the Space Beagle.
* van Vogt: War With the Rull.
* van Vogt: Isher
* Niven: The World of Ptavvs

I'd like to give him Niven's Protector, but there's just that little bit of sex, and we haven't addressed that yet. I re-read Protector today, and it remains one of my favorite SF novels.

Heinlein's The Door into Summer is another favorite, but still too adult to give to a boy.

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Vile Faceless Minions with terror and slaughter return!

Blogger rycamor June 01, 2015 2:17 AM

Automatthew,

That's a good list. You might want to include Heinlein's "The Star Beast" and "Tunnel in the Sky". Two of my favorites as a kid.

I'm also going to root for Asimov's "The Stars, Like Dust" as his best all-American kid novel.

Blogger Cail Corishev June 01, 2015 2:32 AM

Yeah, I liked Asimov's Galactic Empire books, and I think they were all kid-friendly. I don't recall any sex in his books until the second Elijah book featuring Gladia, and then it's everywhere.

Ender's Game is fine for kids, right? There might be one awkward conversation between Peter and Valentine. And I wouldn't let a kid continue the series. I was especially disappointed in how much coarser the Shadow series was.

Blogger SirThermite June 01, 2015 3:16 AM

@rycamor

Read "Tunnel in the Sky" on my Kindle after Vox named it #9 on his all-time Top 10 list of Sci-Fi novels (the only one by Heinlein that made the list), and even at my age I really enjoyed it. It tapped that vein for self-sufficiency, exploration, and building something-from-nothing that's as old as humanity itself. Prior generations might have compared it to "Robinson Crusoe" or "Swiss Family Robinson" but I think the most recent published work to capture and capitalize on that spirit (minus the social aspect) is actually the Survival Mode of the video game "Minecraft." If a teenager likes Minecraft he's probably gonna enjoy Tunnel in the Sky.

Yes. Also, he is an irritating social justice warrior. Fuck off with the anti-capitalist message kidfic, already.

I bought all of Castalia House's SF because I like good, non-preachy SF. Read the stuff like crazy. I don't think there's any blogger I ever liked enough to buy books just to make him happy.

If the SJWs give us something non-necrobestial, of quality, I'd be happy to vote for it. My un-muzzled nose sniffs out quality, not my Master's ass.

Time and time again we've seen it stated, explicitly (as here and by a commenter at ESR's blog), and implicitly, that we're not "true" and "hard-core" SF fans, and don't have the understanding that years, nay, decades, of being a "core" fan gives of the style, expectations, and deep norms of the genre.

And the truth is the opposite - many of us here cut our teeth on the classics, often starting in first or second grade, devoured hundreds of books before we were even into high school, with a range that goes back to the 30's and 40's (and earlier... Wells, Twain, etc..) and everything since.

Our revulsion to the current "grey goo" as Sarah calls it, and love of the indy, the human wave, and what Castalia publishes, is BECAUSE we are deeply steeped in the norms of classic SF. We respect it, and we love it - the pulp/adventure, and the deeply thoughtful pieces - and view the current superficial thoughtless mono-ideological dreck as a betrayal of what we hold dear.

Dexter, good point. I hadn't really thought about it (not really having Suess as some part of my fabled childhood). Of course, when my dad was trying to have a serious talk with me around 4th grade about the importance of math, he asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. "A barbarian" was my reply. And thus the conversation ended.

Ah, finally figured out why the comments weren't working. So...

I have far less depth in the SF/F genre than many of the ilk. Neither am I new to it.

But even if my experience of the genre was zero, I would want to be here. Alongside people fighting for the right to dream their dreams, to create something worthy - and to have it judged for its worth, not by the current diktat of Socialist Realism. Rabbi B is right.

That fight is here. So I am here. And as a long-standing Bugs Bunny fan, your enemies are an embarrassment to rabbits everywhere. SJWs delenda est, and let us laugh along the way.

I will add for outsiders that if Mr. Beale is your ideal of a devil, you have a crappy imagination AND you've never seriously read the news. Sorry, boss - but the competition is pretty fierce out there.

I've requested a VFM number via email. Hope I'm not too late.
