The return of Voxiversity

A number of you have been requesting a new Voxiversity, I'd been thinking it was well past time to do another one, and the potential connection with our hypothetical Brainstorm Club that we've been discussing turned it into a no-brainer.

On Saturday, May 16, the next Voxiversity will commence with the first quiz on Martin van Creveld's A HISTORY OF STRATEGY, which will cover the Foreword, the Introduction, and Chapter 1: Chinese Military Thought. If you haven't acquired a copy of the book yet, you can get it at Amazon or in EPUB format at Castalia House. The chapters are not long and you will be able to read Chapter 1 at least twice before Saturday. If you want to see what a Voxiversity is like, have a look at the left sidebar for previous ones on works by Thucydides, Dante, and Rothbard, among others.

However, one benefit of selecting a work by a living author is that in addition to the usual quizzes and online discussions in the comments, Dr. van Creveld has agreed to take part in an online videoconference with me that will be open to the Ilk. We haven't set a date yet, but it will be scheduled sometime during the Voxiversity, which will run for the next eight weeks. I will interview him for the first 30 minutes, after which we will have an open Q&A session. In addition to being the author of EQUALITY: THE IMPOSSIBLE QUEST, as well as The Transformation of War and Technology and War, Dr. van Creveld will be a contributor to RIDING THE RED HORSE V2 and he has written an absolutely fascinating essay on a significant aspect of future war that very few have considered.

The event will be free, but because the number of places are limited (to exactly what, I do not yet know) priority will be given to the members of the Dread Ilk's Brainstorm Club. While I'm still working out how that is going to operate, my current thinking is that in addition to being able to attend the monthly Brainstorm event, members will get first shot at attending the free online events such as these.

Thanks for offering up another Voxiversity. I have been looking forward to another Voxiversity, but will pass on this particular subject. Hoping for a session on rhetoric/dialectic. Maybe next time.

this is just a test

Looking forward to a perfect timely book.

Blogger Rantor May 12, 2015 6:13 AM

You are correct good sir, just completed the forward, introduction and chapter one. It did not take long. Thanks for offering this course.

Wonder what the attrition rate will be this go round. It was significant for prior ones. It is a shame given how good they all were, particularly the Thucydides one.

Anonymous NorthernHamlet May 12, 2015 6:26 AM

Damn. This is getting more awesome by the post.
Have you considered if we'll roast SJW hopes and dreams over a campfire?

Wonder what the attrition rate will be this go round.

That's one of the reasons I chose STRATEGY rather than EQUALITY. It's shorter and the subject matter is nearer and dearer to many Ilk hearts. And it's also why I plan to schedule the online session towards the middle-end, in order to keep the interest levels up.

I've also had some initial talks with a freelance necromancer in the interest of a future Voxiversity on RHETORIC.

This is great news. I've been telling my two sons about this book, and my intention to pick it up and take them through it too, and this will be a great time to do it. You can plan on three more participants.
On a related note, my younger son has an interest in medieval history, especially weapons, and I was pleased to see that he had come home from the library with van Creveld's Technology and War.

Just downloaded a copy. I'm very much looking forward to this after missing out on the other Voxiversity sessions.

Can someone tell me if EPUB will work on Kindle Fire and Fire phones or am I strictly limited to Amazon with these devices?

I was pleased to see that he had come home from the library with van Creveld's Technology and War.

Not just a great book, a phenomenal book.

I don't think it will work native, but you can convert it to MOBI and that will work.

Blogger Matt May 12, 2015 6:57 AM

@AlteredFate - It is easy to convert EPUB to MOBI with ebook management software such as Calibre, available for free download for various computing platforms.

Anonymous jack May 12, 2015 7:17 AM

@Vox I don't think it will work native, but you can convert it to MOBI and that will work.

Yes. Download the free Calibre and inport the book. Then, use the convert to make it into almost anything including mobi. I use it enough to regularly send him some money.

Epub readers such as Moon+ Reader and Aldiko are available on the Amazon App Store (for free, though Moon+ Pro costs). Provided you can get an epub file onto your Kindle Fire in the first place, these should let you read it.

As others have noted, Calibre is great for managing and converting DRM-free ebooks such as those purchased directly from Baen or Castalia, removing the need to read epub directly.

I really enjoyed Voxiversity before (silently, not much for commenting), but I think this one is just too much manliness for the likes of me. ;-)

Anonymous NateM May 12, 2015 7:48 AM

I'll definitely be participating. Never did get around to doing the others, interesting as they looked

Only slightly OT: what's up with Somewhither? I thought it was going to be out last month.

In.

End of this month, early next latest. Just cleaning up stuff.

#3 will second that notion.

I may not be able to participate in this as scheduled. Will you post everything here as in the past so we can play along as time permits?

Blogger VD May 12, 2015 10:02 AM

Will you post everything here as in the past so we can play along as time permits?

No. That would completely defeat the purpose.

Anonymous HardReturn¶ (30) May 12, 2015 10:05 AM

Thanks for reviving Voxiversity. Just read Introduction. I don't know much of topic so shortness of book will help me keep focus. I kept up about half way through History of Peloponnesian War but straggled later due to its length.

Anonymous Michael Maier May 12, 2015 10:42 AM

So how long will the quizzes be available? I have a busy weekend.

Blogger VD May 12, 2015 10:46 AM

Oh, the quizzes will remain available indefinitely, as before.

Excellent! I await it eagerly!

Blogger Matt May 12, 2015 11:02 AM

Just discovering the Voxiversity links in that sidebar. Will I be able to follow along in the Thucydides with the Crawley translation?

Blogger Stilicho #0066 May 12, 2015 11:27 AM

No. That would completely defeat the purpose.

Voxiversity or brainstorming club?

Blogger VD May 12, 2015 11:41 AM

The latter.

Anonymous Roundtine May 12, 2015 11:42 AM

Look forward to it.

Is anyone interested in doing something like Voxiversity when the Hugo Awards packet comes out? Maybe have different people take a book and host a discussion on their own blog, or if Vox is willing, do it here.

Anonymous Adam May 12, 2015 11:53 AM

Looking forward to the new Voxiversity. I enjoyed the Thucydides one immensely.

Blogger Stilicho #0066 May 12, 2015 11:54 AM

got it. thanks.

Blogger Blackburn #0040 May 12, 2015 11:56 AM

in for both. Great timing as I just bought this last week along with a couple of others from the Mighty Castalia House.

Anonymous Giuseppe May 12, 2015 12:04 PM

Ummm brainstorming Ilk club....been too busy ti check my secure email yesterday, but if you have not sent something out...how do I join? As I mentioned in the relevant post, I'd very much be up for that, whatever form it takes, video, podcasts, etc.

Blogger Migly May 12, 2015 12:53 PM

This whole "Voxiversity" idea is great promotion, not to mention what an incentive it is for learning.

VD: I've also had some initial talks with a freelance necromancer in the interest of a future Voxiversity on RHETORIC.

The internet is in dire need of that, too.

Anonymous Difster VFM #109 May 12, 2015 1:00 PM

This is excellent, I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks for the new class....I am in if you have room for me....

Anonymous RTaylor May 12, 2015 7:59 PM

I had been meaning to get this book anyway... might as well be tested on what I learn. I'm in.

Blogger Blume May 12, 2015 8:40 PM

In, will buy the book tonight.

Anonymous Clay May 14, 2015 1:15 AM

Oh, man. Vox, I'm all into this one. Good job.

Blogger MidKnight (#138) May 14, 2015 8:40 AM

I'd love to - but must bow out this time around as other commitments have me occupied through this weekend and into next week.
