We're #98

The Right Wing News lists the top 100 conservative sites:
88) Daily Paul: 66,851
89) Bill O’Reilly: 67,480
90) GOP.com: 67,749
91) Canada Free Press: 68,023
92) Human Events Online: 68,967
93) Jewish World Review: 76,215
94) GOPUSA: 71,293
95) Ricochet: 71,358
96) Day by Day: 73,755
97) Numbers USA: 76,280
98) Vox Day: 76,816
The numbers are largely bogus of course, being based on Alexa rank. How do I know? Because last year, with 625,476 fewer monthly pageviews, VP was ranked at #52, just ahead of the Von Mises Institute.

But that 76,816 number reminds me of something. Oh, yes, I believe Johnny Con said something about his Alexa rank being higher than mine. Let's see what they are today:

Vox Popoli
76,643 Global
15,411 USA

Whatever
80,320 Global
15,679 USA

Sound the horn! Br-br-br-BRAAAAP! First traffic, then Alexa rank... I wonder which comes next, "bestseller" lists or Twitter impressions?

Alex Jones was talking earlier this week on how Alexa was messing around with the numbers of non-leftist sites. If I remember correctly, his sites and Drudge all of a sudden had a huge drop last October. While MSNBC, Kos, and others had a sudden spike up at the same time.

Not that you care, but congratulations. You put a lot of work into this site even though you say its for your personal amusement. Good to see WND so high up the list too. Ever feel like going back?

To any rabbit reading, a suggestion:

Don't bother with the above, Vox just wants to trick you into setting two new goalposts that there is little to no guarantee you can hold, just so he can watch you reel backward again and again. I advise not to bother, and go straight to the last redoubt: Size of Dress collection.

Alexa rankings are based on links, right?

A lot of the sites on this list are the right wing equivalent of buzz feed, Vox, upworthy, Mic, and other click bait sites.

Anonymous MrGreenMan May 07, 2015 9:23 AM

@Josh

I believe it's based on whether you are willing to download and install the Alexa Toolbar, which records all your traffic and behavior like a browser Nielsen box.

Alex Jones was talking earlier this week on how Alexa was messing around with the numbers of non-leftist sites. If I remember correctly, his sites and Drudge all of a sudden had a huge drop last October. While MSNBC, Kos, and others had a sudden spike up at the same time.

There is a big shift going on web metrics industry wide right now, driven mostly by venture capital and other people looking to moneytize traffic and audience information. That shift is to track user engagement, which roughly means, minutes spent on a site. Sites like Daily Kos, Reddit, HuffPost, etc are benefiting a lot from this because their users tend to camp out, on the site, all day, usually looking for replies to their own content, or comments, and then engaging in discussion. Othersites, like Scalzi's, Drudge, here, users tend to come, look for a new post, and then either read it without clicking anything, or maybe leaving a comment or two, and then move on with their life. On Drudge, it's just straight passthrough. So this type of metric is not that promising for sites where just one creator posts content, or only a few. There is push back, because the engagement metric is also very prone to gaming.

All of this is designed so that people can tell a VC or investor, "hey, our average user spends X minutes on our site, doing Y things". The classic metrics of pageviews/impressions are close to worthless these days for people who are trying to get money for their website.

"You frequently promote the dehumanization of women and than proceed to nurture and encourage male rage. You flat out do advocate violence towards women"

If so, please quote word for word a quote where he promotes dehumanization of women? When does he encourage male rage? Give us a quote where he advocates violence toward women?

Because the quote you quotes says none of these things, nor implies them.

Criticism, contempt, dismissal, shame are rhetorical postures, words, not assault nor battery, violence. You are broken in the brain if you cannot tell the difference between words and violence. You are stupid if you think anyone reading your venal, verbal spew cannot tell the difference.

And the "they" in that paragraph does not refer to women, but to social justice warriors, Leftist, and degenerate cannibal troglodytes called Morlocks. That "they" is you. He is talking about you, not about women in general.

You did not read the words you quoted before posting them. That was foolish. It makes your comment less persuasive rather than more.

But, John! Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can hurt even more! Hurting feelings is far worse than hurting the body. Best not to do either.

Your words speak for themselves and you advocate some ugly things. You are accountable for your own words. People have a right to confront you about it.

Any metric that isn't a reasonably accurate proxy for revenue generated by ads placed on the site is close to worthless, but the advertising industry will fight tooth and nail to avoid that realization spreading.

Blogger insanitybytes22 May 07, 2015 12:43 PM

Yeah, Vox flat out speaks words to men who are "broken in the brain" and they take it as encouragement to act violently.

Promoting hatred, dehumanizing women, and then doxing them are all tactics designed to encourage any willing violent psycho to take up a designated target. And it works. To sit back and try claim your hands are clean after doing such a thing is a lie.

You have just advocated violence towards women by doxing me, Vox.

You have repeatedly exposed me to threats of violence and paved the path so people can carry out your bidding. You are fully accountable for that, not me.

People who complain about your abuse are not all SJW, some of us are ordinary people who do not appreciate your inability to act like a human.

Blogger insanitybytes22 May 07, 2015 1:00 PM

I fully expect an apology for Vox's doxing. Those of you who follow him should know what he does to people who do not deserve such abuse and the consequences he so casually tries to wash his hands of.

Those of you who condone and advocate such things have blood on your hands too. Think about it.

Blogger Guitar Man May 07, 2015 1:02 PM

IB22, just do yourself a favor and stop obsessing over Vox. You can find more purpose in life if you go outside, take a hike, meditate, pray, but constantly attempting to troll websites will probably lead to a very unhealthy disposition.

Anonymous JI May 07, 2015 1:04 PM

Given these rankings, why does the Left get so worked-up about what Vox says on this blog? I care what VD says because he clarifies my own thoughts on issues, and I tend to agree with his views, but I could care less what obscure leftists say. When their utterings are brought to my attention, I usually just laugh at them. But they're really seem to put a high value on VD's blog writings when they should be just ignoring him, especially since their own beliefs are reflected daily in the MSM.

What's weird is she's over at Sunshine Mary's blog talking about how one of her daughters got married at 18 but her other 3 children aren't interested, blah blah blah...all in a polite and non-crazy tone. So she's in her 40s or 50s pulling this nonsense.

Blogger Russell (#0106) May 07, 2015 1:22 PM

why does the Left get so worked-up about what Vox says on this blog?

He's lifting up the rocks to expose the lies to the light. And, instead of running away denouncing him for badthink, a bunch of us have shown up to see what's really under there. And poke it with sticks.

That interested group keeps growing in size, and spinning off now and then to lift up the rocks themselves.

All badthink. All worthy of two minutes of hate.

Blogger Alexander May 07, 2015 1:37 PM

Even more dangerously, people are looking under the rock Vox lifts, slapping their own foreheads for thinking that the grubs were dangerous, and are going off an lifting rocks of their own.

Blogger Douglas Wardell May 07, 2015 2:06 PM

It's one level of crazy to continue go to someone's blog to troll and harass them after having been repeatedly banned / told to stop. It's another to then accuse them of harassment when they announce their intent to expose you after you've previously exposed yourself already. You don't get to keep sneaking in to pee on the rug and then act like the aggrieved party when someone tweets pics of you doing it.

Also sent in email (and I'll get around to annotating the post in the next few days:

The milliScalzi thing: I was looking for a way to make the numbers smaller because people’s eyes glaze over when they see six figures. I’m a numbers person, so mine do not, but I know this tendency from having to deal with others. I’d originally been meaning to use a 1-100 scale with no title, but I knew milliScalzi would annoy you at least a little. So, it was a childish taunt, and I’m sorry.

I also expected that you’d point out that your US ranking was higher (because, in your situation, that’s what I’d have done), and I considered addressing that in my original post, but I felt it would lose the emphasis on my larger point, which is that you and Scalzi had similar rankings, then Larry and Brad were further back, then Sarah, then Aidan and I. A lot of people felt completely sandbagged by the fact that the Rabid Puppies slate was stronger, and the Alexa rankings explain that, I think.

And yeah, I don’t think Alexa rankings are hugely meaningful, but it’s one of the best metrics available to third parties about sites you don’t control.

I’d expect people in similar Alexa rankings to pass each other at times (so, congrats). My own Alexa ranking was around 925,000 before I went on a campaign of categorizing and tagging older posts (I’ve been spending 1-2 hours a week to clean old stuff up). And, frankly, delete some old posts that added nothing to anything and weren’t backlinked at all.
