Good news, bad news

The kids wanted to go to the track today and do a speed workout. With the soccer season over, I didn't have a good excuse to avoid doing it, so we ran a few laps followed by some 100-meter sprints, then finished with another two laps.

The good news: I can still run a 12.2 and beat Ender. I might be able to get below 12 again if I work at it this summer. My sub-11 days are clearly a long-distant memory. And despite some initial tightness, my hamstrings held up.

The bad news: I'm pretty sure I can't hold him off at the 200 any longer. Also, I think it may take me about a week to recover.

The kids were all amused at how easily they outran me after the sprints. Apparently they were previously unfamiliar with the concept of the famous "sprinter's jog", which is roughly as fast as a geriatric man hobbling with a cane when he is not particularly in a hurry to get where he is going.

And in totally unrelated news, I have an absolutely shocking bit of investigative reporting to reveal to the Dread Ilk:

What's next for Nate, will he be endorsing Keynesian economics and changing his name to Naitlyn?

I have a dirty confusion to make.

I shot a Glock 19 Gen 3 recently, and it was the best 9mm I've shot.

Ugh, I feel dirty saying it.

I can rip through a 15 round mag with startling accuracy and speed. Faster and more accurate than the CZ 75B, or the Baby Eagle, or the Springfield XD for me. The screwy grip and weird weight would drop the sights right back on target as fast as I could squeeze the trigger.

For a fun afternoon at the range, the Glock is my 9mm of choice. *shudders*

Anonymous NorthernHamlet June 22, 2015 7:56 PM

Cee,

I am by no means an expert, but I'd recommend buying a bench and weights off Craigslist on the cheap. Get dumbbells and all that. Start with the 5x5 program and find a site with a list of basic beginners exercises for weights (squat, deadlift, bench, etc. Start small, likely really low weight. Add a bit every time you make 5x5. If you don't have room, look at decent local gyms without contracts.

Get out and run a couple times a week . you'll need some shoes, but don't go crazy. Most running shoes are overmarketed shit. grab a couch25k program and start there.

Look at what you eat. I do high-protein and fat diet with a lot of whey mixed in. Realize if you're starting out though, to gain muscle, you'll also likely gain a bit of fat as a result. Someone else may have better advice, but I say the running and not going too crazy on food should do you fine.

Now...

Grab a good book, a game of online chess, and almost anything other than a glock, and you're better off than the majority of American men.

Welcome to the fun.

I second Aeoli Pera.

Also, StrongLifts 5x5. I think it's a bit easier for beginners than Rip's. It was for me, at least.

Don't do cardio at first until you are regularly lifting. You're going to be wiped out at first.

And don't be afraid of failure. Seriously. Setbacks are just opportunities to grow.

Blogger Cail Corishev June 22, 2015 8:31 PM

Cee, if you're really out of shape and worried about injury, take a look at Slow Burn. It uses small numbers of very slow repetitions to exhaust the muscles while reducing the risk of tears or joint damage. There's a set of exercises for the weight machine and another set of bodyweight and dumbbell. The book is pretty cheap, but I think you can also find descriptions or videos of the exercises online. Once you're feeling more fit, you can move to more conventional heavy lifting when you're ready.

I would remind you all that my wife does in fact carry a Glock .45

She also carries a purse... doesn't mean that you should too. What's next, tupperware parties?

It is not a purse, it is a knapsack

What's next?

Stickwick is outed by the National Enquirer as chief astrologer - on speed dial no less - to Obama, Boehner, and Pelosi. Biden testily says, "I don't believe in that cr*p."

Salt startles D.C with a landmark unanimous Supreme Court ruling emerging from the secret surveillance court; a decision gutting the U.S. Constitution of the 2nd Amendment based on the wildly hailed Progressive Feelings standard.

Man this was hilarious, I actually remember the Bane quote. Thanks!"

You're welcome. I try not to use it more than once a year.......but it is a classic!

Cee,
Get some instruction from a good trainer. That's my best advice.
Starting strength is good BUT, be careful, you can easily hurt yourself if you go too hard, too fast, and/or have messed up form. Start off slowly, take months to let your body adapt.

Rip (starting strength) has a bunch of good instruction vids on YouTube.

But seriously, get some basic instruction, you only get one back...right shoulder, yada, yada.

Your average gym guy is NOT a good source for advice.

Dude. I don't carry the Glock. I carry the Steyr or the 1911 I built with my own hands.

"How's the 10mm handle, Nate?"

It sucks. and by that I mean... it feels like every other glock I've ever shot. its got the ergonomics of a brick. Seriously. Hi-Points feel better in the hand than this piece of shit.

that said... the bullets go where you aim them... and the 10mm is a vicious round.

if it falls in the water.. I'll chuckle to myself... and happily leave it there.

Well if a plastic gun won't float, what the hell good is it?

Cee, take a look at this video. Doesn't talk about specific exercises, but gives you an idea of what you're trying to do and why you should lift to failure.

I shoot with a handloader.

The best part of shooting revolvers is not having to police your brass.

The best part of shooting automatics is the one shot out of 100 that lands in the brass bucket.

Well, James Yeager bought a 1911 a couple months ago. Nate was just doing his part to bring balance to the Force once again.

I own several Glocks and a whole bunch of other guns, and I always say that I have a love/hate relationship with Glock.

On the one hand, Gaston Glock is a genius. To design a plastic gun with only 34 parts that require but a single punch to remove, while achieving a high level of reliability is nothing short of miraculous.

I can literally take a Glock completely apart and put it back together in less than 5 minutes. For fun, my son and I hold contests to see who is faster. Cleaning a Glock is simpler than any other gun I own, and for a deep cleaning I wash it in the sink. No other brand in my collection (around 15 handguns) is as drop dead simple and reliable, and no other gun has parts as ubiquitous and cheap.

On the other hand, it’s a purely utilitarian gun. It doesn’t point naturally, I don’t like the feel of polymer, the trigger is nothing special, it’s a bit thick when I carry concealed, and it ain’t particularly pretty.

The other day I was hot rodding one of my CZ 75s. That gun is far, far more complex and tedious to take apart and resemble. Many more parts, pins, and springs. Not the kind of thing I do particularly often because it’s just a pain in the ass.

But it feels incredible in the hand. It points beautifully, the trigger is like butter, follow up shots are crisp, and it looks sexy as hell. There is something very special about how this gun looks and feels. Same with my 1911s.

But when the Zombies come, I’m grabbing a Glock.
